At press time, not all of the super regionals were finished, so we’re looking at this a few days before the first games begin. I think Georgia, Alabama. North Carolina and West Virginia will meet in the semifinals which is a lousy deal for Texas meeting Georgia early but the Crimson Tide of Alabama should see their run end in a Bracket Two matchup with the Bulldogs. Meanwhile, North Carolina’s experience should prevail against a strong West Virginia team. If its Georgia verses North Carolina for the title, look for Georgia to pick up their second CWS championship. They were the first in the SEC to win a title but its been many years and this team is loaded.

It’s a shame the CWS matchups eliminated two of the five SEC teams to make the field by pitting them against each other and Ole Miss drawing North Carolina in the first games. But it was good to see so many new faces in Omaha, even if the Tigers didn’t come close to making it. In fact, LSU, Vandy and South Carolina, three of four league teams not even making the regionals, have won 12 CWS titles between them. They’ll all be back.

The fourth of July is one of the biggest national holidays in summer and folks like to show their pride by decorating their homes with red, white, and blue flags and banners. Home gardeners can take a step further and add these patriotic colors to their landscapes, flowerbeds, and mixed containers by planting red, white, and blue flowers.

When choosing color options for the landscape, pay attention to sunlight conditions, as there are different options for varying levels of sun or shade. In general, a plant tag labeled full sun means it can handle 6 to 8 or more hours of sunlight, part sun means 4 to 6 hours, part shade means 2 to 4 hours, and full shade less than 2 hours. You should also take into consideration the time of day the area receives sunlight. Afternoon sunny areas should be treated as full sun because of the intensity of afternoon sun, whereas morning sun locations can be more tolerant on shade-loving plants.

Hope you all have been having a crafty Spring even though we have had a LOT of rain. You know as well as I do, as those Summer months start turning up the heat, we will all be wishing for those downpours to cool us off and give our gardens the nourishing rain they crave. I have decided to just go with flow and make the best of it. Laugh at myself when I leave the house without my rain jacket or umbrella. It is what it is.

College athletics may soon face its most significant federal overhaul since the introduction of Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) rights in 2021.

A bipartisan group of U.S. Senators has introduced the Protect College Sports Act, legislation designed to bring structure and stability to what many lawmakers describe as an increasingly chaotic college sports landscape. The bill, led by Senators Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), would create a national framework governing NIL compensation, athlete transfers, eligibility, and NCAA enforcement powers.

Todays piece is something simple to go along with the snail and Bee. Since I haven’t been having very much luck growing my own flowers lately, I decided to paint a single flower on a small hill with nothing but the sky in the background. Since NIL rules were adopted, college athletes have earned millions through endorsement deals, sponsorships, and collective-backed agreements. While supporters argue NIL has finally allowed athletes to profit from their talents, critics contend the current system lacks oversight and has transformed recruiting into a bidding war. The proposed legislation seeks to address those concerns while preserving athletes’ ability to earn compensation.

LET THE PROS HANDLE IT!

One of the bill’s most notable provisions would establish federal NIL standards that override the patchwork of state laws currently governing college athletics. Supporters believe a single national standard would create consistency for schools, athletes, and conferences. The legislation would also codify athletes’ rights to earn money from their name, image, and likeness while creating new regulations intended to prevent abuse and increase transparency in NIL agreements.

The bill goes beyond NIL regulation. It proposes limiting athletes to one unrestricted transfer during their college careers and places restrictions on additional transfers unless specific exceptions apply.

It would also establish a five-year eligibility window and prohibit midseason coaching departures, a provision some have jokingly labeled the “Lane Kiffin Rule.”

Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the legislation is its proposal to grant the NCAA and a newly created College Sports Commission targeted antitrust protections. Advocates argue these protections are necessary to allow meaningful enforcement of compensation caps, transfer regulations, and other competitive-balance measures. Critics, however, believe such protections could limit athletes’ earning potential and give too much power back to governing bodies that have already lost several major court battles.

The proposal has already generated mixed reactions throughout college sports. Some leaders, including prominent figures such as Nick Saban, have expressed support for federal intervention, arguing that college athletics desperately needs stability. Meanwhile, the powerful Southeastern Conference and Big Ten Conference have raised concerns about portions of the bill, particularly those involving revenue sharing and media rights.

Whether the Protect College Sports Act ultimately becomes law remains uncertain. Congress has struggled for years to pass comprehensive college sports legislation, and significant debate is expected over athlete compensation, NCAA authority, and antitrust protections. However, the bill represents the most serious bipartisan effort yet to create long-term rules for the NIL era. If passed, it could fundamentally alter recruiting, roster management, athlete compensation, and the overall business model of college athletics for years to come.

ARE WEEDS KILLING MY LAWN?

The answer to the question above is NO! Although, I must admit, I’ve gotten that ques-tion many times, one must understand that weed growth is a result of a bigger problem, an un-healthy lawn, not a cause of decline.

Likewise, killing the weeds will not cause the grass to grow. Weeds and turf are in competition, and the strong will survive.

There are many causes of turf decline: too much nitrogen on Centipede and St. Augus-tine, over- or under-watering, stresses or damage from drought, poor drainage, disease, insects, heat or cold, shade, lack of nutrients, or an accidental misuse of a pesticide. But, most issues begin with over-management, applying too much of something for lawn improvement when it doesn’t want or need anything at all. Proper management, after all, is turf-type specific. Centi-pede needs less management followed by St. Augustine, Zoysia, and then Bermuda.

If you suspect a nutrition issue, a soil test will provide the needed information. Your local Extension office can assist, if needed. If you question shade being the problem, go outside and look up. St. Augustine followed by Zoysia are the two most shade-tolerant grasses but not for full shade. Centipede has some shade-tolerance and Bermuda has none. Keep in mind, trees grow and so do their canopies which produces more shade over time.

We cannot control the amount of rainfall we receive but we CAN control the amount of irrigation we apply. 1-inch total per week or 1/2 inch two times per week during early morning hours, is a good rule of thumb during dry periods. You can increase it to 1 1/2 inches during periods of extreme heat. Measure the output using a flat-bottom container, such as a tuna can, by measuring the amount of water in the container after a run cycle. Adjust the output time as needed and correct areas with poor drainage, if possible. Turn your irrigation OFF when receiv-ing periodic rainfall. Your lawn doesn’t have to be watered every week, rainfall or not.

Pesticides are handy tools for keeping weeds, insects, and diseases at bay. They must be used according to the label to be effective and not damage your turf. Many weed control products are ok to use on some grass type but not others. Application rates may also change depending on turf type. Timing of application is also important. There are many suggestions on a pesticide label to help prevent turf and/or environmental damage. Read and follow them!

Meet Yota. She was found among a bunch of tires at a car dealership. Not a wild, feral kitten left there by her mother, Yota had been abandoned by a person who did not want her. She was afraid so, not wanting her to run away, her rescuers thought it was best to catch her in a humane trap. Yota was so hungry she gobbled up some deli turkey, which was all her rescuers had to offer her. The veterinarian said she was only about six weeks old, too young for shots or flea prevention, so all she could get was an exam and a dose of wormer. Yota is now relaxing in her START foster home where she has nutritious food, a soft bed and toys to play with. Cat owners who do not spay/neuter their pets cause overcrowding at shelters and, in the case of Yota and many like her, suffering and death when they are abandoned. Contact your local animal shelter to find out about low cost spay/neuter for cats and dogs.
