TIME, THE DRAGON SLEW Tony’s Take THIS ST. GEORGE The medieval story of St.George slaying an evil dragon is a cherished tale of good triumphing over evil. One of the reasons citizens of southeast East Baton Rouge Parish chose the name for their recently formed city - St. George was to have the goodness of secure public schools prevail over the increasing insecurity of public schools in the Baton Rouge area.

These folks wanted the schools, not necessarily the city. St. George will be hard pressed to become a Zachary or Central because there is no central core to its existence - no commercial areas except for a suburban-dominated Airline Drive - and few local businesses to create the necessary tax base to even exist, let alone grow.

Whether one believes the city was formed for better schools or white flight, it still had the right to do so, as awkwardly as it appeared. But leave it to Louisiana’s controversial Governor to play the heavy, or in this case, the dragon, in the saga. Jeff Landry is so unpopular in the state that 62 of 64 parishes voted down a school district for St. George. This is what’s known as the people’s displeasure with Landry, whose heavy hand quashed all five state amendments on the ballot two weeks ago, following a similar story last year.

I have no dog in this fight. Folks south of I-10 in Baton Rouge are a different breed than those in Red Stick and I can’t ever envision a trip to St. George for shopping or sports. I’ll travel to Baton Rouge a half dozen Saturdays each fall for football but that’s established.

Landry’s latest gig is playing “ambassador” for Donald Trump to secure all the friends he can muster in Greenland. He’s there passing out cookies but the Greenlanders aren’t taking them for fortune cookies. Landry glad-handing people is a reach and his influence with real Yankees will probably lead to nothing substantial for Trump. There he be, the Cookie Meister, handing sweets to residents of Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. Last we heard, these folks were Nuuk-ing Landry’s efforts.

Landry lacks what Donald Trump and Edwin Edwards have in spades - the charisma to get things done with charm. To Landry, charisma is a Latin dance.

Now, St. George, you have a patently untenable city to grow without the central core of what the community needed to secure, thanks to that mean ol’ dragon. I wonder when Governor Landry plans his next visit to your fair but school-less city. The next gubernatorial election in Louisiana is next year. And St. George will want the evil dragon slain. Only this dragon is not named Puff. It’s Landry.

STOKE’S ASTER, AN EASY TO GROW NATIVE WILDFLOWER FOR THE HOME GARDEN. If you are looking for an easy to grow perennial that blooms all summer long and supports local pollinators, then look no further than Stoke’s aster.

This native plant comes back year after year and will delight you with its Will Afton deep violet, lavender-blue or sometimes white flowers. It’s not a new plant by any means, but rather a tried and trusted favorite by many gardeners throughout the Southeast United States.

Stoke’s aster is considered an herbaceous perennial meaning that it doesn’t produce woody tissue.

The foliage appears as a dense rosette of 3-6 inches long lanceolate shaped leaves emerging from the plant’s crown and can grow 10-12 inches tall and 12-18 inches wide. Bloom stalks can reach up to 2 ft tall depending on cultivar.

The flowers are aster-like and grow 1-3 inches wide. The large flowers offer an interesting texture with up to 20 fused petals with tips that are deeply notched or fringed. Flowers begin to appear in May and will bloom off and on throughout the summer months. They even have a delicate, pleasing fragrance!

Plant Stoke’s aster in full to part sun for best blooming potential. However, they can still work in part shade locations. They prefer moist soil but can tolerate wet or dry soil at times. They can also tolerate infertile soil with a wide range of soil pH values from 5.0 to 8.0. These traits make it an excellent plant for new gardeners to try something new and feel confident that it will grow in their garden.

Stoke’s aster can be used in several ways throughout the landscape. They are common additions to butterfly, cottage, drought tolerant, native, pollinator, and winter gardens. Due to its tolerance of wet soil, they can be sued around ponds and riparian strips. The dense rosette of foliage allows it to be used in borders, mass plantings, or grouped together in small groups.

There are several different cultivars of Stoke’s aster available in the trade. ‘Blue Danube’ is common and produces large blue flowers. ‘Davinity’ and ‘Silver Moon’ are two white flowered options. Try ‘Mel’s Blue’ if you want the traditional look of Stoke’s aster. There are several other cultivars of Stoke’s aster available in the trade. You’ll have to start checking local gardens centers and plant nurseries to see what options are available to you.

Hi, Everyone!

Here we are at the end of May! I can hardly believe how fast this year is flying by. Or should I say, how fast life is going by.

Maybe because I never slow down with all the running I do.

And when I am not at work or running errands I am looking through patterns, books, pinterest, magazines, etc. trying to get some ideas on what to do next. With all the rain we have been having it is the perfect time to get those UFO’s finished. I don’t like driving in the rain.

Today I decided on a door hanger. And this is one that can hang around all Spring. I am sure you have seen a snail or two crawling around your flower bed. This one you can hang on your front or back door and not have to worry about it at all. This is a 10 in round which I base coated Warm White and then decided to dry brush Whispering Turquoise over the surface. I then traced on the main outline of the snail. I based the snail Foliage Green, the shell Wild Berry, and the section between the body and shell Cactus Flower. The flowers are Turquoise, Purple Cow, Orange Mango, Warm White, and Cactus Flower. The leaves and stems are a double float of Foliage Green and Avocado. I highlighted and shaded appropriately. Add the facial features , lines on the snail body, dots on the shell, the cheeks, eyes, mouth, and grass. I am thinking I may go back and outline the snail and flowers with a Magna pen to give it a little more interest. I may be painting a few more bugs to add to my collection.

Well. that’s my project for now, What will your next project be? Mine......I am really unsure. But, I know it will be fun.

The biggest argument for bringing Orgeron back is recruiting. KELLY’S ZEROS CONTINUE TO PILE UP Former LSU football coach Brian Kelly is making inroads in having his place in LSU football coaches’ ranking drop precipitously towards Mike Archer and Curly Hallman levels. Following his inability to hire quality defensive coordinators, equaling his incompetence as a speaker of regional accents, the Massachusetts Mentor remains unemployed seven months after his ouster last season. A man who had little trouble torpedoing his players, Kelly’s strength is not knowing enough about his roster to even know many of their names, let alone anything about them.

Having been privy to the insights of his younger, successful stepbrother, it was no surprise to me that the Grim Reaper visited Kelly’s career in Baton Rouge. Brother Randy had requested that I help him secure tickets to the LSU Tigers, acting through the wife of a friend, the wife being the niece of Randy but no relation to Brian. When I asked him why Brian couldn’t accommodate him, Randy just laughed and said they really didn’t get along.

They shared a mother but Randy’s personality apparently benefitted from the genetics of his father compared to Brian’s . Or maybe it was the fact that Randy wasn’t an egotistical twit from the cradle of New England snobbishness. Regardless, Brian now seeks the aid of AI and Claude. No, not two guys from Chelsea but Artificial Intelligence and Claude, the artificial desktop buddy.

It seems fair that the patently artificial Kelly would seek the aid of others in the unreal world. Following a video interview with USA Today, Kelly said his efforts to secure meaningful interviews with Athletic Directors resulted in “every day, I’m trying to do my due diligence, using Claude and AI, asking questions to build some of those answers that I think can be helpful for me as I get in front of an athletic director. “ That quote went viral since it sounded like Kelly was saying he’s been asking his computer for advice on how to interact with humans. Since Kelly wants to learn more about the nuts and bolts and not the educational benefits of Claude and AI, whiffing on how it can improve his character, empathy and human understanding, why would anyone want to have a throw down chat and a beer with such a man?

Brian could have learned personality from his wife, Paqui, a cancer survivor and very perky and personable woman. But like Les Miles, Kelly doesn’t have the vision or the insight to relate to the common, non-Bostonian man.

Carrry on, Brian. Take your ill-gotten gains from naive LSU board members , secured for you by a former LSU athletic director as clueless as you when it comes to reading the room. You have as much chance of landing a major coaching or media job as Les Miles. In your own way, you showed you could be as stupid as Les . Stupid is as stupid does, Brian. And stepbrother Randy said to say “hello!”

POTATO BEETLE

Colorado potato beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, one of the most damaging pests of potatoes and other solanaceous crops. Potato is the preferred host, but this insect pest also will feed on tomato, eggplant, pepper, tobacco, ground cherry, horsenettle, nightshade, belladonna, thorn apple, henbane, buffalobur and other related plant species. Damage to crops is mainly due to leaf feeding by larvae and adults. Heavy infestations can result in complete defoliation of leaves and other plant tissues.

Adult Colorado potato beetles are yellowish-orange in color with ten black stripes on the wing covers (elytra), which are the modified forewings of beetles.

The thorax possesses a pattern of black spots and two short lines near the middle.

Adults are approximately 3/8 of an inch in length and oval in shape. The legs are orange in color and punctures on the surface are coarse. Larvae are plump, humpbacked in shape and pinkish-orange to orange in color, with a series of two spots per segment along each side. Eggs are yellow in color when deposited and darken to orange as they develop.

Adults overwinter in the soil and/or under surface litter, becoming active as temperatures increase in the spring.

Adults then feed, mate and lay clusters of eggs on the undersides of leaves. Each female may lay 300+ eggs during her lifetime.

Eggs hatch in 4-9 days; larvae initially feed on foliage in groups. There are usually 2-3 generations per year. Effective control requires a combination of cultural, mechanical, and chemical methods.

Starting with non-chemical practices to reduce beetle populations. Gardeners should remove weeds— especially alternate host plants like horsenettle—that can harbor beetles. Using floating row covers can help protect plants by preventing adult beetles from reaching them. In small plantings, hand-picking adults, larvae, and egg masses from the undersides of leaves is a simple but effective method of control.

Regular scouting is critical for successful management. Plants should be inspected frequently, especially when they are young. Look for clusters of the yellow-orange eggs on the undersides of leaves and for feeding damage. Controlling beetles early, particularly in the larval stage, helps prevent severe defoliation and reduces the need for repeated treatments.

When infestations become severe, using labeled insecticides containing active ingredients such as spinosad, permethrin, acetamiprid, or zetamethrin can be effective. These treatments should be applied when beetles or small larvae first appear for best results. It is important to follow all label directions carefully, including application rates and pre-harvest intervals.

The most effective potato beetle control strategy combines all of these methods. By using cultural practices to prevent infestations, monitoring crops regularly, and applying insecticides when necessary, growers can protect their plants and increase yield.

Here are six week old kittens enjoying one of the three wet food meals they get each day in their foster home. They also have dry food available if they want it and their mother is also still nursing them. There are seven kittens, a very large litter for a cat to care for outdoors! But their mother, the gray tabby partially visible in the upper left corner of the photo, was rescued from the street the day before the kittens were born so they have been inside a home since birth.

All seven kittens and their mother will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and placed in loving homes. They will not contribute to the already out of control pet overpopulation problem facing us due to pet owners’ failure to spay/ neuter their pets in a timely fashion. Please contact your local animal shelter for information on low cost spay/neuter for cats and dogs. Help your local animal shelter or rescue organizations, working toward the day when there will be fewer homeless pets, by volunteering to help with TNR, fostering and caring for rescued animals.
