I don’t want to jinx this trend but embrace it. June through early September will still be a bitch. And our political climate is unsettled although we are so close to an unprecedented peace in the Middle East and a surge in the economy if and when Iran’s “leadership” acquiesces to Trump’s demands and we can move on to more positive things. That’s why enjoying this springtime gift is important as we enter the sauna of summer, both in weather and politics.

Meteorologists say 2026 will be the coolest year since the beginning of the millennium and the most peaceful. Thank you for that! Those who prefer a long hot summer will have to wait at least until next year while those of us who have a lingering desire for at least an attempt for four distinct seasons can look back at the past eight months with a smile. No snow this year but that rarity was only 14 months ago and its memory will remain with us for most of our lives.

Springtime sports in our region have taken a hit, especially LSU baseball, but optimism is on the horizon for LSU basketball and football, especially with the return of Will Wade and the hiring of Lane Kiffen. In this era of college moneyball, LSU is more than holding its own. Whether or not you approve, it is here to stay. Our passions and loyalty will be tested over the next decade or so until this new NIL world becomes the accepted norm. By that time, old school guys like me will have left the active field of spectators and retired to memories of when it was fun and affordable to attend college sports contests.

Meanwhile, let’s take this climatological gift and bask in it until the days become the longest and football season approaches, along with midterm elections. Again, we shall survive and move on to the next season and those that follow. For me, I have the rest of this spring and one more full cycle of weather plus another summer and fall next year before I retire from my various careers in retail, electronic media and publishing and either become a mentor or just take it to the house (and the lake, golf course and travels around the U.S. and abroad). Maybe all of it. I’ve been gifted a wonderful life and wife and bettor’s odds healthwise even though the past few years have been a challenge. I’ll take it to the payout window when the race is over.

MUSHROOMS IN THE LANDSCAPE

Everyone has seen mushrooms growing in the landscape, so this shouldn’t be a big surprise. Mushrooms can pop up at anytime during the growing season, but we tend to notice them more frequently after large rain events in spring. Whether it’s fairy rings in the lawn or toadstools in the flower bed, most of these fungi don’t pose a significant risk to the health of our plants.

Mushrooms are fungi organisms. Most are classified as basidiomycetes, which is the official term for the classic umbrella shaped mushrooms that most are familiar with. These organisms lack the ability to photosynthesize Will Afton their own energy, so they live off other plants and plant matter as an energy source. Once a mushroom spore lands on a viable substrate under the right environmental conditions, it will “germinate” and begin growing. Hyphae are commonly described as root-like structures that permeate through the substrate material. A collection of hyphae is called mycelium and is the mechanism that the fungus uses to collect nutrients. Once the substrate has been colonized the fungus will produce spore releasing structures, caps, where it eventually releases new spores.

Large rainfall events typically trigger this response. This is what’s going on when mushroom caps appear in the landscape.

Fairy rings in lawns are a common type of mushroom that most people notice. As the name suggests, they grow in rings or circular patterns in the turf. The area must have good organic matter content, hence their presence. Stinkhorn mushrooms are commonly seen growing on the mulch used in flowerbeds. These mushrooms produce brown to bright red colored stalks and emit a non-pleasant odor. Ganoderma fungi produce shellacked or lacquered-looking caps. This group of fungi feed on decaying material from hardwood and conifer trees and are commonly seen growing where old trees once stood.

Because these organisms are feeding on dead plant material, they don’t pose a risk to plant health.

However, they can be unsightly and cause concern for those with small children and pets. The easiest thing a homeowner can do is to hand remove mushrooms as they appear to help prevent the release of more spores. This is a great use for old grocery sacks. Make sure to throw them out with the trash to remove them from the site. The best way to manage Ganoderma type mushrooms is prevention.

Remove as much woody material, like stumps and tree roots, from the site as possible if a tree must be cut down. This will reduce the amount of substrate for the mushrooms to grow on.

There aren’t any fungicides labeled to control mushrooms in the landscape because they aren’t considered a major pest. Do what you can do to prevent spore production and be aware that mushrooms will always pop up after large rain events. These organisms play a major role in our ecosystem and understanding their biology is key to living with them.

Hi, Everyone!

Hope all you Moms had a wonderful Mother’s Day! I really can’t comment on the weather as I was at work in the PBX office all day and it has no windows. But, when I walked outside after work the sun was shining. A really nice change from the past two days when I got off it was storming.

Tried to wait out the rain but got halfway to my vehicle and the sky opened up again. I was drenched! But on the bright side of things it was warm.

Okay, with it being Mother’s Day, you know I always make several bouquets to put on family graves. I thought I would share one of the bouquets I made with you. Since the supply house was out of leather leaf I decided on salal leaves, no white limonium all they had was pink. But when you are burning the candle at both ends, something is going to fall short. Instead of Jade I used Robellini in the back for the framework. I filled in with the salal tips. Started adding the alstroemeria, then roses, then mums, and finally the limonium. This was the first bouquet I made. I was really tired from work but after getting this one finished, it was so much fun and relaxing I made 3 more bouquets in time. Or at least it seemed like no time. They were so much fun to make. I love working with flowers. It is so much fun! But, my hand doesn’t think so. Have an appointment with the hand surgeon later this month. I MIGHT decide to replace the joint, we’ll see.

Well, this is my craft for this time. What will your next project be?

Mine......I don’t know, but I know it will be fun!

The postseason picture for both the LSU Tigers and Southeastern Louisiana Lady Lions softball is one of the most intriguing storylines in the NCAA this season. While LSU is battling through the gauntlet of the SEC trying to position itself as a regional host, SLU has quietly built one of the strongest mid-major resumes in the country and is fighting for both a Southland Conference title and potential at-large consideration.

For LSU, the Tigers enter postseason play with momentum at the right time. LSU closed the regular season on a five-game winning streak and secured the No. 8 seed in the SEC Tournament. The Tigers have built a resume that should comfortably place them inside the NCAA Tournament field, but the bigger question is whether they can host a regional in Baton Rouge.

That answer appears to be trending toward yes.

LSU’s strength of schedule has been among the toughest in the nation all season because of the brutal week-to-week SEC grind. The Tigers own multiple Quad 1 victories and a top-tier RPI profile, which remains one of the committee’s most important evaluation metrics. In a conference where even teams with losing league records still carry strong postseason resumes, LSU’s ability to finish above .500 in SEC play significantly strengthened its hosting chances.

The SEC itself may ultimately help LSU more than hurt them. Six SEC teams have consistently projected near the national top eight in bracketology discussions, and the conference is widely viewed as the deepest league in softball this season. That means LSU’s losses do not carry the same damage they might in another conference. Simply surviving the SEC schedule with quality wins keeps the Tigers in excellent standing.

The Tigers also appear to be peaking offensively. Over their recent winning streak, LSU dominated opponents with explosive run production while getting strong pitching performances and improved FOR SALE: Workhorse defensive consistency. The Lions finished the regular season with a dominant 24-3 Southland Conference record and a 46-14 overall mark. Their postseason hopes are extremely strong regardless of a conference tournament loss, which is unusual for a Southland program.

Traditionally, mid-majors must win their conference tournament to guarantee an NCAA Tournament berth. However, Southeastern’s resume may be good enough to earn at-large consideration if necessary.

D1Softball recently highlighted the Lady Lions as a legitimate bubble team with a real argument for inclusion even without the automatic bid. That alone speaks volumes about how respected their body of work has become nationally.

What makes Southeastern dangerous is balance. The Lions pitch well, defend at a high level, and consistently pressure opponents offensively. They also have postseason experience after making deep runs in recent years. In many ways, they resemble the type of dangerous No. 3 or No. 4 regional seed that Power Four schools desperately hope to avoid.

LSU fans know that firsthand.

Just last season, Southeastern stunned LSU in Baton Rouge and eliminated the Tigers from NCAA Tournament play. That upset still resonates across the state and reinforces how capable this Lions program is when the postseason arrives.

As Selection Sunday approaches, both Louisiana programs appear headed toward the NCAA Tournament, but with very different expectations. LSU is trying to prove it can make a legitimate Women’s College World Series push out of the SEC battlefield. Southeastern Louisiana is trying to show the nation that its sustained success is no fluke and that the Lady Lions belong among the sport’s rising powers.

Harrison County Gardners SOUTHERN WAX MYRTLE

The Southern Wax Myrtle, Morella cerifera (syn. Myrica cerifera), also known as southern bayberry or can-dleberry, is a large, spreading, fast-growing, evergreen tree or large shrub that typically grows to 10-15’ tall and 8-10’ wide, but occasionally reaches a tree-like height of 20’ tall or more. It is native to the southeastern U.S. and typically found in a variety of soil types and habitats including wetlands, sand dunes, hillsides, and upland forests.

The wax myrtle is winter hardy to USDA Zones 7-10. It can be a versatile plant in the landscape that can be used in woodland gar-dens or shrub borders, as a privacy screen or informal hedge, in wet, dry, sun or shady sites. The lower limbs can be trimmed to more resemble a tree than a shrub. It is also tolerant of high winds and salt spray making it a great choice for flood-prone or seaside areas. The wax myrtle fixes atmospheric nitrogen which helps it survive in poor soils.

The glossy, aromatic leaves, particularly the new growth, emit the distinctive bayberry candle fragrance when crushed. Flowers are fragrant but non-showy, with only the flowers on male plants displaying some color. Flowers bloom in late winter to early spring. Pollinated female flowers are followed by small attractive clusters of tiny, globose, blue-gray fruits which mature in late summer to fall, with persistence through winter. Each fruit is sur-rounded by an aromatic waxy substance. Birds eat the fruits in fall and winter, thus helping the plants to naturalize by disbursing the seed.

Tomatoes are in almost everyone’s garden and would easily be voted the number one vegetable. However, as much as we love to grow tomatoes we must admit that it’s not always easy to do; in fact, sometimes it’s downright heartbreaking.

A third and prominent cause is a disease known as Bacterial Wilt. Many gardeners describe plants with this disease as looking like they had hot water poured on them. Bacterial Wilt can be diagnosed with a simple test. First, remove the plant from the soil. Rinse the roots and lower stem. Once rinsed, cut a section from the lowest part of the stem, just above the roots, about four inches long.

Have a jar of water ready so that the stem section can be suspended in the water, bottom end down. Then, watch the bottom end of the stem for a wispy, cloudy, milky ooze. This is bacterial streaming. The bacterial ooze is almost transparent, but can be seen releasing from the base of the stem.

There isn’t much that can be done for Bacterial Wilt except to remove and destroy affected plants. Future plantings should be made in a different location.

Tomatoes may be grown in containers, but if roots grow from the bottom of the container into infected soil they may contract the disease. Do not reuse stakes or ties.

Other common causes of tomato wilt include Southern Blight, Fusarium Wilt and Root Knot Nematodes.

Nematodes and Fusarium Wilt may be avoided by planting tomato varieties that are resistant to both of these pests. Southern Blight, however, is another one of those “overnight” killers like Bacterial Wilt. It can be recognized by white fungal growth at the soil line or by beige “seed pearl” sized balls of white, beige or brown.

Here are six week old kittens enjoying one of the three wet food meals they get each day in their foster home. They also have dry food available if they want it and their mother is also still nursing them. There are seven kittens, a very large litter for a cat to care for outdoors! But their mother, the gray tabby partially visible in the upper left corner of the photo, was rescued from the street the day before the kittens were born so they have been inside a home since birth.

All seven kittens and their mother will be spayed/neutered, vaccinated and placed in loving homes. They will not contribute to the already out of control pet overpopulation problem facing us due to pet owners’ failure to spay/ neuter their pets in a timely fashion. Please contact your local animal shelter for information on low cost spay/neuter for cats and dogs. Help your local animal shelter or rescue organizations, working toward the day when there will be fewer homeless pets, by volunteering to help with TNR, fostering and caring for rescued animals.
