The largest fan gathering for an NFL draft opening night was set last week when nearly 400,000 Pittsburg Steeler and a smattering of other team fans gathered near the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Susquehanna Rivers in downtown Pittsburg.

A shortened eight minute clock for each team in the first round found the draft backed up like a small commuter traffic jam when as many as three teams had already had their picks ready to go or were on the clock while the current team was announcing their selection.

Only when the last ten teams were left did the process catch up and a record time was set for a first round despite at least seven trades moving teams such as the 49ers, Bills and Titans into and out of the last part of the first round and into later rounds.

It was evident this draft would produce fewer potential starters and stars from the get-go. Few of the players selected last Thursday night were even on the draft radar a year ago. The first selection was a no-brainer; the self-made Heisman winner from Indiana, Fernando Mendoza, was the clear top choice of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Other non-surprise moves were the number of Ohio State players drafted (four in the first eleven picks, an NFL record), the selection of Jeremiyah Love, the All American running back from Notre Dame and the dominance of the Big Ten and SEC conferences in the selection process (17 of the first 32, ten from the Big 10, were picked).

It was a draft for offensive linemen as two guards and six tackles, including both Utah starters from last year, dominated the selections. Only two quarterbacks and two running backs and one tight end were chosen and just two linebackers. Nine teams, led by Ohio State and Miami, had a total of 21 players picked, including two from national champion Indiana and both running backs from Notre Dame. Just four schools outside the Power 5 conferences had selections. Six SEC schools - Alabama with two, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU and Texas A&M -had seven picks while the Big 10, led by Ohio State’s four players, had ten - two from Indiana, one from Penn State, two from Oregon and one from Southern Cal. The other big surprises - Cleveland drafting like Kevin Costner was really their GM and picking two solid players, neither of which was a quarterback and the lack of defensive tackles (2) and linebackers (2) taken in the draft - the worst showing in recent memory.

The teams that helped themselves the most on opening night were the Kansas City Chiefs, trading up to sixth to pick former LSU corner Mansoor Delane, the draft’s top cover corner and an underrated defensive tackle, Peter Woods, from Clemson and Cleveland, who selected offensive tackle Spencer Fano from Utah and KC Concepcion, a wideout from Texas A&M. However, the clear winner were the New York Giants, moving into the tenth spot after a trade with Cincinnati, adding the top offensive tackle in Francis Mauigoa from Miami after choosing Arvell Reese, the draft’s 2nd best linebacker, from Ohio State with the fifth selection. That trumped Dallas, who picked two solid defensive players including Caleb Downs from Ohio State, the draft’s best safety and the Philadelphia Eagles, who chose Makai Lemon from Southern Cal after switching mid-round picks with the Cowboys.

The New York Jets also surprised themselves by picking two strong players, one on offense and also the draft’s best defensive player, Texas Tech linebacker David Bailey, and the Tennessee Titans, who chose the best wideout and an underrated edge rusher with their two selections Buffalo, Cincinnati and San Francisco traded down out of the first round while Green Bay, Indianapolis, Denver, Atlanta and Jacksonville had no selections to start the draft in the first round.

DWARF YAUPON HOLLY ILEX VOMITORIA ‘NANA’

Gardeners are always looking for easy to grow plants that stay green yearround, don’t grow out of control, and are relatively free of insect and disease pests. In many situations this can be a pipe dream, but every once and a while something comes along that fits these requirements and Dwarf Yaupon is one of those plants. In fact, they just might be the most carefree plant to grow in a Louisiana garden.

Dwarf Yaupon, Ilex vomitoria ‘Nana’ is a smaller growing cultivar of yaupon holly, I. vomitoria, a plant native to the Southeastern U.S. occurring along coastal plains and maritime forests from Virginia to Florida over to Arkansas and Texas. It is very tolerant to many different growing conditions. It performs well in full sun (6-8 hours of direct light), part sun (4-6 hours of direct light), and part shade (2-4 hours of direct light) locations. It can grow in a variety of soils ranging from moist to dry and in both acidic and alkaline soils. Those qualities alone make for a standout plant and is why you see it planted in almost every landscape throughout USDA hardiness zones 7-9.

Yaupon holly shrubs can grow upwards 25ft tall and 15ft wide. Dwarf Yaupon, like its name suggests, stays much smaller at 6ft tall and 8 ft wide with more of a mounding growth habit. On average, you see them between 2-4ft tall and 2-4ft wide, depending on how they are managed. As with most hollies, Dwarf Yaupon display evergreen leaves. The leaves themselves are relatively small at ½ - 1 inch long and oblong in shape. They are a dark, lustrous green in color and somewhat purplish during the fall and winter months. New foliage emerges with a copper color adding to the plant’s interest.

Landscapes uses for Dwarf Yaupon are plentiful. Due to its tolerance of soil conditions, they can be used in upland soils and lowland soils. Some people use them in rain garden designs because they can tolerant periodic flooding. Others utilize them in dry soils because of their drought tolerance once established. Dwarf Yaupon displays amazing salt tolerance, so they be used in maritime plantings near the coast. Their evergreen nature makes the great foundation plants and allows for their use as small hedges, which is one of my favorite ways to use this plant. Dwarf Yaupon might be the best alternative plant to use in place of boxwood. Boxwood plants struggle with Phytophthora Root Rot and Boxwood Dieback whereas Dwarf Yaupon is much more resistant.

When adding new Dwarf Yaupon plants to the landscape, follow general panting procedures. Dig the hole slightly shallow so that the top root ball sits slightly above ground level. Dig the hole 2-3 times wider than the root ball and use the backfill to replant the shrub into the ground. Add a layer of organic mulch to cover the disturbed soil and fully irrigate when done. Aim to plant Dwarf Yaupon hollies during the cool season, November through February, but success can still be had because of how tough these plants are.

Fertilization of Dwarf Yaupons can be done in a couple of ways. If a soil test is performed and nutrient deficiencies are known, choose a fertilizer that fills in the gaps and apply late winter. Many folks fertilize by applying a complete fertilizer like 13-13-13. General all-purpose fertilizers (N-P-K ratios of 3:1:2 like 18-6-12) can also be used. You will find organic options as well. Espoma Organic makes a product called Holly Tone (4-3-4) that is commonly stocked at both big box stores and independent garden centers.

Pruning of Dwarf Yaupon can be done throughout the growing season. If a formal hedge is desired, start pruning in late February and continue as needed through the end of September. Dwarf Yaupon naturally grows into a well-defined mound with a thick mass of fine-textured leaves. If you have enough space for the plant to grow out, you might not even find the need to prune.

Check local plant nurseries and garden centers for availability of container grown Dwarf Yaupon plants. Sometimes you might find other cultivars of Dwarf Yaupon like ‘Stokes Dwarf’ which is somewhat smaller than ‘Nana’. Another similar cultivar ‘Schilling’s Dwarf’, but with a little more of an upright growth habit. ‘Nana Bordeaux’ has a more compact growth habit, 2-3 ft tall, and produces vibrant maroon new growth. You don’t know what options you have until you start looking for them.

Hi, Everyone!

Hope you all are doing well and enjoying our Spring weather. We all know those dog days of Summer will be upon us in hardly no time. I am just relieved that my a/c decided to break now and not in July or August. I was very thankful the temperatures were in the 60’s since I had to have both the inside and outside units replaced. It was still hot in the attic where those guys were working, they did not complain one bit. But, it’s all installed and I am very satisfied with the professionalism and work ethic of those technicians.

The New Orleans Saints approached the 2026 NFL Draft with a clear mandate: inject explosiveness into the offense, add depth in the trenches, and continue reshaping the roster around a younger core. By the time the weekend wrapped, New Orleans had assembled an eight-player class that leaned slightly offensive (five picks) while still addressing key defensive needs—an approach that reflects a franchise trying to modernize its identity.

Ok so let’s get to this time’s project. Birds are building nests, bugs are crawling, gardens are being planted, and bees are buzzing around and some are even making honey. Not sure if this one is or not yet, but he does have a flower in his hands. I am not quite finished with this design due to other issues that arose. So I still have some decisions to make on whether to add some honey comb behind him, add some veins in his wings, add a bow to make this a girl. Still need to highlight the hands,outline the flower, highlight the leaves, and shade around the bee and the outside edges of the wood to bring everything together. Trying to decide if I should drill holes in the wood and put ribbon to hang it or put a command strip or picture hanger on the back. So make choices. I painted this on a 10 inch piece of wood.

And it was a lot of fun. Even with a 20 pound cat trying to lay in my lap. He thinks he’s still a kitten (he’s almost 8 years old).

The headline move came in Round 1, where the Saints used the No. 8 overall pick on wide receiver Jordyn Tyson out of Arizona State. Tyson immediately becomes one of the most important pieces of this draft class. A dynamic playmaker with big-play ability, his selection signaled a commitment to surrounding the offense with more speed and versatility. Analysts widely viewed this as a “need meets value” pick, filling a glaring hole at receiver while also giving the Saints a potential No. 1 target moving forward.

Well, that’s my project for this time. What will your next project be? Mine.....I don’t really know. But I know it will be fun!

In Round 3, the Saints pivoted back to offense, selecting tight end Oscar Delp, also from Georgia. Delp projects as a reliable pass-catching option who can stretch the middle of the field and contribute in redzone packages. His addition reinforces the Saints’ intent to build a more flexible, multi-layered passing attack.

Day 2 continued that theme of balance and roster building. In Round 2, the Saints selected defensive tackle Christen Miller from Georgia, a physically imposing interior presence who brings run-stopping ability and rotational pass-rush upside. Pairing Miller with the current defensive front gives New Orleans a stronger foundation inside, especially against NFC South run-heavy offenses.

Day 3 is where the Saints arguably did some of their most important work. With multiple picks, they focused on depth, versatility, and developmental upside. In Round 4, they grabbed offensive lineman Jeremiah Wright, a former defensive lineman who transitioned to guard—bringing size, toughness, and positional flexibility to the interior line.

Later in the fourth round, the Saints added wide receiver Bryce Lance from North Dakota State, a productive deep threat with back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons. Lance gives the Saints another vertical option and reinforces the idea that this draft class is about offensive explosion and competition at skill positions.

In Round 5, New Orleans selected defensive back Lorenzo Styles Jr., a converted wide receiver who brings athleticism and ball skills to the secondary. His versatility fits well in modern defensive schemes that prioritize hybrid coverage players.

Round 6 featured one of the more intriguing picks for local fans: LSU standout Barion Brown. Known as an electric return specialist, Brown adds immediate special teams value and could carve out a role as a gadget player on offense. His ability to flip field position makes him a potential hidden gem in this class.

The Saints closed out their draft in Round 7 with cornerback TJ Hall from Iowa, a fundamentally sound defensive back who adds depth and competition to the secondary.

Beyond the draft picks themselves, New Orleans also made a notable move during the weekend by acquiring former first-round edge rusher Tyree Wilson via trade, further bolstering their pass rush rotation. This move complemented their draft strategy by addressing a premium defensive position without spending a high draft pick.

Overall, the Saints’ 2026 draft class reflects a clear organizational direction. Offensively, they prioritized playmakers and versatility—adding a top-tier receiver, a tight end weapon, and multiple depth options at wideout and along the line. Defensively, they focused on reinforcing the interior and secondary while supplementing the edge through a trade.

Early evaluations suggest this was a solid, balanced class that addressed immediate needs while also building for the future. The fungus begins its attack at the base of leaf sheaths, where the leaves attach to the stolon. The base of the leaves turns dark brown to almost purple and become soft when conditions are moist and the disease is active. In the ab-sence of moisture, the base will turn tan or reddish-brown and harden.

Because the base of the leaf is rotting, the flow of moisture and minerals to the upper leaves is cut off, and the top of the leaf changes color before dying and turning brown.

Minimize thatch, a buildup of grass and plant debris in the root and crown areas of the turf. Excessive thatch cre-ates a favorable environment for the growth of many disease-causing fungi and an unfavorable environment for turf plants. Thatch gives the lawn a spongy texture. If you can wiggle your finger through more than a half-inch of grass be-fore reaching the soil, you probably have excessive thatch. Thatch is most common in zoysiagrass but can occur in most turf types.

Large patch, caused by the pathogen Rhizoctonia solani, is one of the most common lawn disease in Mississippi during the spring and fall. Typically the times when our warm season grasses are at their weakest. This disease is characterized by circular patches with brown or smoky-gray outer edges. The circular patches may continue to grow to 20 feet or more in diameter and may intersect with other patches, creat-ing complex patterns .

In larger patches, the inside of the patch may begin to turn green again as it starts to recover. The patches often occur at the same location year after year, usually in low areas or where dew or moisture persists for longer periods, such as shaded areas.

The patches grow from the center outward and may spread rapidly or slowly, depending on moisture and temperature conditions. The color of the outside edge of an actively growing patch is usually a cinnamon-brown, reddish color.

Many homeowners fertilize their lawn too early, encouraging large patch disease. Refer to MSU Extension Pub-lication 1322 Establish and Manage Your Home Lawn for more guidance on fertility and fertilization. As a general rule, you should not fertilize until you have mowed your warm-season turfgrass lawn at least twice. Sally is an approximately two year old cat with a heartbreaking story. Her family abandoned her in an unfamiliar, dangerous place - a swamp. They obviously did not want her to find her way back home. Sally stayed where they left her, thinking perhaps they would come back for her. They didn’t. But there was food there that volunteers put out each day for the feral cats that lived in the swamp. Sally was there for over a month before she was rescued and brought to us. Why would anyone leave a sweet cat like Sally in such a place when there are shelters and rescue organizations that will rehome them? Cats on the street or in a place like where Sally was found must fend for themselves, dodging traffic, predators and unkind people in their search for food and shelter. Sally’s life will be a safe and happy one now with the loving family that adopts her. To meet Sally, please email START.
