Tony’s Take HATE LOSES; WOKE BROKE

This column is not about Donald Trump; it’s about the American people.

America decided to throw off its latest versions of McCarthyism and The House UnAmerican Activities Committee on November 5th to help restore responsibility to itself.

By returning a flawed but focused Donald Trump to office for a second term, history was rewritten. Only Grover Cleveland was President in non-consecutive terms before last week. Those level-headed national news analysts who had to hide their feelings from cowardly corporate news structures could actually do their jobs without feeling radical eyes boring into their heads. It was so NOT 2016 and Rachel Maddow. It seemed like an era long gone, before the internet and cellphones.

Today, Coffee Joes and Sleepy Joes both gathered up their personal belongings and walked down the aisles to retirement. Self-important, grotesquely made-up moderators and news anchors were dusting off their overinflated resumes, hoping to find a job where bulls.. still had value. But the stalls were beginning to be cleaned and fumigated. And unless they change, they will find themselves into forced retirement.

Oh, there will be retribution, but not from the imagined jackboots of a so-mislabeled Nazi leader and his alleged corps of stormtroopers. Instead, humane order will be restored to the apartment complexes of Denver suburbs and the communism of Sanctuary cities will fade away. The “demand and deserve” generations will begin to understand what made this country the beacon of the world for generations.

People will still need to be kind and giving to each other, regardless of race, color, creed, religion and NFL team affiliation. There will still be the need to bring insurance costs, federal regulations and poppycock educational curriculum to heel. Misuse of “proper pronouns” will remain a minimal gaffe, not cause for felonious charges and workplace chastisement.

This soon-to-be 80 writer/reporter, raised in the proud city of San Francisco among the melting pot of the American Dream, graduate of a Los Angeles high school and the youngest person ever hired by The New York Times and a former bureau writer and reporter for the Associated Press, is proud his fellow Americans chose common sense over fear, accountability over activism and civility over chaos. A new but still minority of young Americans are starting to “get it”, fighting their way through a series of radical cobwebs and into the decency of what a good life should entail.

The roads will be strewn with Karens of all ilks, liberal and conservative. MAGA now can transition from a perceived goose--stepping mindset into what it should have been all these decades - MEGA -Making Everyone Good to All. Ordinary Americans should never have to be demonized by a minority of others, regardless of viewpoints.

Where does reform begin? Immediately at the border. No question. Next, sensible regulation of the greedy, whether insurance, energy, higher education costs or banking. Third, a restructuring of the Department of Education, a new vision formed to begin to help the United States catch up to much of the world and restore common sense to curriculum. Fourth, dismantling of the Department of Homeland Security, the closest thing the United States has produced that resembled the Gestapo. Fifth, a retooling of our infrastructure and energy grids, Sixth, cyber responsibility and security in a whirlwind world of change.

Our foreign policies will have to be remodeled to return America’s place in the world. It begins with limited foreign financing, serious sit-down meetings with the Russians, Chinese, Palestinians, Israelis and Koreans as well as opening dialogues with other Middle Eastern countries, tougher policies with Mexico and the entire drug-laden Central and South American pipeline and a review of our penalties for illicit drug activities.

By 2028, both major parties will have had the need to assemble a totally new leadership cadre. Kamala Harris’s biggest mistake - not picking Pennsylvania Governor Joe Shapiro to be her running mate - helped cause her to lose Pennsylvania to Donald Trump. Pennsylvania is not called The Keystone State just because of its geographical resemblance to a keystone of an archway. Harris - in her incredibly, historically inept campaign - couldn’t even be a good puppet for those with real brainpower in her party. The Harris-Walz ticket will be ridiculed for generations as one of the worst defeated tickets of all time.

GROWING BROCCOLI IN THE HOME GARDEN

Broccoli as we know it today is a member of the plant family Brassicaceae, which many of us might know as Cruciferae, an older name for the group of plants. Commonly referred to as “cole crops” other members of this family include cauliflower, collards, heading cabbage, and kale.

Like most vegetable crops, broccoli requires full sun for the best production. They also need good well-drained soil. Look for sunny areas that don’t hold surface water. Containers can be used in situations where drainage isn’t ideal.

The optimal soil pH range for broccoli is between 6 and 6.5. Follow recommendations on a soil report to adjust. Phosphorus and potassium concentrations should be observed and adjusted if needed. Add a complete fertilizer product to garden soils and potting soil mixes. One of the best tips to help folks produce high-quality heads of broccoli is to apply pre-plant fertilizer so that young broccoli plants produce an abundance of leaves.

Broccoli can be started from transplants or by seed. It can be grown anytime between July 15 and Mar 15. To maximize production plant between July 15 to Oct 31 for a fall crop and again Jan 15 to Mar 15 for a spring crop. Sow seeds near the earlier dates in each period to allow time for seedling development. Transplants or “starts” are small plants meant to be transplanted in the ground at the time of planting. Plants should be spaced 18-24 inches apart.

After transplanting (or at the true leaf production phase in a seeded crop), apply nitrogen fertilizer at a rate of 1 lb N/100 ft row or 1 lb N/300 ft2. This can be done once a week as needed to maintain plant vigor. Calcium nitrate and blood meal are popular nitrogen-only fertilizer products used in home gardens.

Irrigate broccoli plants when the weather turns dry. Water is essential to the photosynthesis reaction and inconsistencies in irrigation water have a direct effect on plant growth. Water for long periods and then wait for the soil to dry out before watering again. Manage salt issues when growing in containers by watering long enough so that you see water coming out of the drainage holes.

In general broccoli plants started from a transplant will be ready for harvest in as little as 50 days from planting under ideal conditions. Broccoli planted from seed can take up to 100 days until ready to harvest. Harvest immature flower heads when the florets are tight, and the color is green with a hint of purple. Cut just enough to remove the head yet leave a majority of the stem. Continue with nitrogen fertilizer applications to encourage side shoot development. Side shoots will not be as large as the initial head but will resemble them in appearance. Some varieties produce more side shoots than others. The leaves of broccoli are edible and can be harvested just like collards.

Broccoli heads and greens can be kept up to 14 days when stored at 41°F and between 21-28 days if kept at 32°F. Bring immediately after harvest to clean, cool down, and store for use later.

Hi, Everyone!

Hi Everyone,

I know I told you I would show you the finished Witch House but, I haven’t had a chance to get it finished. I thought I had a 14” circle in my stash but I don’t. As soon as I can get one, I will finish it and and show you the finished project.

But for now, this is one of the bouquets I made for All Saint’s Day. I just love the white Cremons. They are as big as Football Mums and if you didn’t know the difference between the two flowers they could easily be mistaken for Football Mums. They are beautiful! I added Freedom roses, yellow Alstromeries, white Limonium, and of course some regular jade leaves and leather leaf fern. I really do enjoy creating flower bouquets. I love taking 2 or 3 bunches of flowers and turning into something pleasing to look at. It is so much fun! I am starting a Thanksgiving piece for next time. I have redesigned it three times. Just can’t seem to get it like I want it. But I will, just takes time and patience. So....until next time.

What will your next project be? Mine......Getting my current one perfected! And the fun of painting it will begin.

Sincerely, Paula Johnson

Well, let’s take a look at my final comment from my last article,

“One thing is for sure, I have a million more confidence in LSU doing what it needs to do to correct the situation than the Saints. “

Guess that did not end well, DID IT? The Saints actually did the right thing and fire Dennis Allen while replacing him with the man that was perfect for the interim post, Darren Rizzi. While, LSU played as bad a game of football as it has in the 3 years since Brian Kelly took over in Baton Rouge.

First, let’s get to the good part of the weekend. After the week started with the firing of Allen, the promotion of Rizzi ended with a Saints victory of the hated and division leading Dirty Birds of Hotlanta.

This team looked energetic, poised and played with a chip on their shoulder. While, the new coach looked calm when needed and like his hair was on fire when it was needed. This team looked like an actual team, the ones that we saw in Week 1 & Week 2. Was it perfect, absolutely not ,but man were they fun to watch. Coincidentally, was the exact words that Coach Rizzi used in his opening remarks when he accepted the job.

The defense flew all over the place and played with aggression that has highly been lacking. The special teams showed up and blocked a kick and forced 2 more misses that were surprising from Koo the kicker.

The offense should have scored on its first play except for a phantom holding call on Foster Moreau. They utilized Taysom Hill and Alvin Kamara to perfection and Derek Carr threw perfect deep balls to Marquez Valdes-Scantling who has been here for maybe 10 days.

“What an unbelievable week,” Rizzi said following the game during his opening statement. “Today doesn’t happen without complete buy-in.” He later added, “Nothing substitutes great preparation.”

It was definitely a Merry Rizzmas inside the Superdome!

I really do not want to delve into what happened in Tiger Stadium that faithful Saturday in Baton Rouge. The fans flocked to College Gameday, then to watch the band go down Victory Hill and finally for half of the football game inside of Death Valley. I say half because well lets just say the best part of the 2nd half was the 400 drones that helped the Golden Band salute the Armed Forces during half-time.

That day started out well but the days before created a media frenzy about a Temu-Tiger from Florida named Omar Bradley. Was it nice to see a live tiger inside the stadium, Yes! Was it nice to see a tiger that was not even the true mascot of LSU, no! Was it completely dumb to have a live tiger travel 10 hrs, then sit in a cage and then put in another nice cage with the LSU logo on it just to be pulled behind a truck and brought to the south endzone opposite the opposing team for what was maybe a total of 5 minutes? Absolutely Not! That should have been the craziest part of the evening but boy it wasn’t!

Every time the Bayou Bengals had an opportunity to control momentum, either we had a bone headed play from a player or a phantom flag from an official or an overturned phantom call from the official.

Now, did LSU lose because the running back from that A team did not cross the goal line and was announced that he did. Or that a long run or pass from LSU was called for holding when none occurred but somehow Jalen Milroe scored multiple touchdowns with none being called on that team from the north. Or even better, still down just 13, when LSU had a huge sack on a 4th downplay that magically was called for face mask though, the tv announcers, the fans and anyone else with eyes never seen it except for 1 official who was 10 yards away…No! Or maybe they did by giving the momentum consistently on that other sideline.

Either way, most will blame coaching and yes there is some to blame but, the coaches didn’t fumble the ball or throw costly interceptions that was the Quarterback. Nor did they miss tackles, lane assignments and did not cover the edge like I know they were coached to do. They always say sometimes it is not about the x’s and o’s but it is the Jim’s and Joe’s. That was no more evident than that night as there was no joy in Baton Rouge for the Fighting Tigers had gotten blown out.

Tony’s Take

ROLL TIDE, GROSS TIGERS

LSU’S pre-game routine has been a little off for the past couple of yearsmis-timed entrances by the team, slow rushed audio and video clips, etc. This year, the loss of stadium announcer Dan Borne’ for the season has affected the vibes of the stadium without his dulcet tonalities of “Chance of rain....NEVER!!”

These hiccups haven’t drastically affected the centennial celebration of Tiger Stadium as the season reached its zenith against Ole Miss. With well-orchestrated LED light displays and a state-of-the-art sound system, the old structure was well served and thousands were thrilled by the results.

Too bad the team couldn’t do the same against Alabama.

In channeling the worst of Curly Hallman, Mike Archer and Les Miles, the LSU Tigers soiled the entire acreage encasing Tiger stadium with perhaps the most anemic, undisciplined and pathetically incomplete performance of the year or even the century. It wasn’t the fact that Alabama came in to play their usual disciplined game; it was the fact that LSU ran their game plan like Kamala Harris ran her candidacy for president. There were no answers to any questions and a beleaguered Brian Kelly sounded even more stupid than Harris, Miles or Hallman.

Where to begin? How about with the pathetic attempt to please the state’s newly elected dictator/ Governor, who wanted Mike the Tiger back in the stadium but health issues, PETA pressure and other factors produced a sham Tiger, a cat named Omar, whose appearance in a covered cage was, at the best, underwhelming, poorly staged and fell flatter than a pancake for his 20-second, peeka-boo, corner of the end zone spotlight. It was akin to Joe Biden trying to pin an award on a person but even more of a joke. Continue with the dozens of top high school prospects, who need to have their forgiveness begged while watching this LSU circus. How many were lost to LSU Saturday night we may never know. But if this performance allows LSU to sustain Coach Brian Kelly in his present mindset, there’s really no reason to attend the Vanderbilt or Oklahoma games.

Marlon Favorite and Brandon Taylor, two outstanding recent Tigers, both put their post-game analysis paychecks on the line with what can only be described as tirades against not only a criminally accountable lack of coaching preparation but also against a cadre of obviously jaded and spoiled athletic brats who have no idea of what LSU is all about except for a place to cash their NIL paychecks. With the exception of Whit Weeks, Cade Durham, Xavier Thomas and Mason Taylor, the LSU players were anywhere from average to ridiculously inept. This team Saturday night resembled the New Orleans Saints before last Sunday. End of story.

Would I attend the last two Tiger home games? Except for the fact that I have invited two longtime football junkies to be my guests for those games, probably not. My physical ailments make it a labor of love to walk the mile and a half from my parking to the stadium. Once in the press box, I get to enjoy a repartee with other journalists, scouts and bowl representatives. But I am the oldest attendee there and one of the most grateful. It’s a chance to watch a team I’ve watched in Tiger Stadium off and on since 1964. I’ll endure the physical limitations but it’s getting too hard to watch the roller coaster of LSU football much longer outside of my home. Give me a reason to continue, please. -0-

MULCHING

November is a good time to add mulch to your garden and ornamental beds for pro-tection against the cold. Mulches provide pro-tection by insulating the plant roots. Mulches also prevent soil crusting and soil movement caused by rainfall.

Organic mulches have the added bene-fit of building soil structure and improving soil drainage. Two popular organic mulch options are bark and pine needles. Pine nee-dles are insulating, non-matting, and enhance the landscape’s appearance, but are not the best choice for weed control. I would not recommend choosing hay as a mulch in the landscape or vegetable garden.

Hay may contain herbicides, such as 2,4-D, which can be detrimental to your herbaceous plants and garden crops. Hay, most likely, will contain weed seed as well. If you choose hay as a mulch, know your source!

How much mulch to apply will depend on the mulching material used. An ap-plication rate of 6 to 8 inches is recommended for both pine needles and straw. Bark should be no deeper than 2 to 3 inches. You can spread a small amount of mulch with your hands but a rake is advised for larger tasks. Establishing a barrier around the bed will help hold the applied mulch in place.

Keep in mind that organic mulches must be reapplied periodically as they deterio-rate over time. The cost of mulch will depend on the material, its availability, and the size of the mulching area. Mulching large areas can be costly. Buying in bulk (rather than by bag) when possible is one way to reduce that ex-pense. For more information on garden and landscape mulching, see Extension Publi-cation P2301, Mulches for the Landscape.

WEED UPDATE: VASEYGRASS

Vaseygrass is a warm season perennial clump grass that is a pest in hay, pasture and lawn settings. Over the past 5-8 years weather patterns have led to delayed mowing and clipping in many areas that have allowed this weed to become more prevalent, especially in hay fields or low maintenance lawn areas.

While livestock will graze it when the blades are short and tender the nutritional value is relatively low and once it matures there is a noticeable hairy texture to the leaves and seed heats which most animals avoid grazing. In hay settings quality and palatability are affected and this grassy weed will readily take over desirable grasses when allowed.

Small infestations can be controlled by spot spraying the grass with non-selective herbicides (ex. glyphosate) or hand pulling. Best control is seen when either is done prior to seeding as this grass readily reestablishes from a seed bank. Timely cutting or clipping to inhibit seed production also helps to reduce this grass in many settings.

If the situation warrants chemical control over the entire field there are very few options available, espe-cially during the growing season. Please seek input from your county Extension Agent on possible options. In many cases a wick wiper to cover the leaves as it out grows other grasses is an option but multiple passes are rec-ommended to ensure coverage.

START is an all volunteer 501 C3 organization made up of members who rescue, foster and care for homeless cats and dogs. Our rescues are fostered in the homes of our volunteers until they are ready to be adopted. We are always in need of foster homes, especially for dogs. We greatly appreciate donations of dog and cat food, as well as funds to spay/neuter and provide veterinary care for the rescued pets. We can be contacted by email. Our address is startcares@hotmail.com. We are also on Facebook. Please contact us if you would like to make a donation to START, or to work together with us to help the abandoned pets in our community.
