Our community has many strong and successful women, and in this issue, we wanted to highlight the success and achievements of some of them, to serve as an inspiration to all and a celebration of women’s contributions to society. In our cover feature, we sat down with several of the amazing ladies who not only live and work here in our community, but also provide you with fantastic content and helpful information every month with their expertise and knowledge. Read about how they achieved success and how they look to inspire girls and women in Manhasset to follow their dreams, as well. It is said that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life. In that vein, we also introduce some of the successful women who have built businesses in their homes and have grown them into something special, through hard work and dedication. In Sports, read how local resident Teresa Weston is helping young girls reach their goals. (Soccer goals, that is!) This month, our Wealth Management Expert, Corey Peterson, talks to us about the benefits of full-service financial management. LOCAL SPOTLIGHT YEAR-ROUND FUN: Workshops and Parties The Science Museum continues to evolve and today offers phenomenal family workshops, afterschool and holiday-break workshops and fantastic hands-on birthday parties, in addition to school field trips, outreach and scout badges programs.

The Science Museum of Long Island:

A Local Gem For Educational Family Fun

Don't miss their next set of holiday workshops during the Spring Break! AN UNBEATABLE SUMMER: Summer Camp and Live at Five While the museum offers educational fun all year round, summertime is one of the BEST times to be there.

By Kim Jones

The community couldn't be luckier to have one of the most fun and engaging summer camps for children and teens right in the area, offering different themed programs each week.

A BEAUTIFUL BEGINNING: About The Museum The location of this year's Women In Business cover shoot was at the beautiful Science Museum of Long Island. Though the museum was originally conceived in 1962 at the home of Doris Leonard, who endeavored to begin a hands-on science museum in Long Island, it moved to its current location at the beautiful estate once owned by Herman Goldman on Leeds Pond Preserve in 1973.

Dive into the ocean depths and soar into the far reaches of the universe as the SMLI takes you on a fantastic summer journey, where the woods, pond, beach, and stream are the main laboratories. Campers can enjoy a jam-packed summer, filled with hands-on science activities, special events, and full use of their 36-acre preserve. The summer sessions are planned to meet the specific needs of each age group. It is the perfect blend of science and good, old-fashioned camp fun. Join for a week, month or the entire summer.

Today, the Science Museum of Long Island is a not-for-profit education center committed to providing young people and families with an excitement about science through active discovery and problem solving. In addition, SMLI helps to foster a sense of wonder, respect and appreciation for the environment by using the backdrop of the Leeds Pond Preserve to teach sound conservation practices.

But the fun isn't just for kids! Adults and families can once again enjoy the popular Live at 5 series this coming summer, with more live bands, food trucks and space to relax or explore the grounds. For more information on SMLI's programs, camp or Live at Five, visit www.SMLI.org.

LADIES WHO LAUNCH

MEET MANHASSET BUSINESSWOMEN FOR WHOM THE SKY'S THE LIMIT By Kim Jones & Kristin Gallagher

Feature article proudly sponsored by Frances Lisner, Real Estate Salesperson, Daniel Gale - Sotheby’s International Realty In honor of Women's History Month, we are celebrating how women have overcome obstacles to achieve success. I am so fortunate to work with some of the most passionate, successful and accomplished women in our community and local area. I wish I could highlight every amazing woman I know, but this month, we sat down with businesswomen who I partner with to help bring this magazine to life for all of our readers’ enjoyment each Kim Jones month. I myself left a long career Publisher of Manhasset Living & Port Washington Living Magazines in fashion at a corporate giant to bring something to the community that was meaningful, fulfilling and that would bring joy to others. I am so glad that I did this and I will never turn back. I hope as you read on, you will be inspired to follow your dreams and know that women can do anything they desire and be amazing at it!

CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT YOUR EVOLUTION AS A WOMAN IN THE PROFESSIONAL WORLD? Dr. Lauren Schwartz, DPM @ North Shore Podiatry: “Looking back on my 25 years in solo practice as a podiatrist, I feel blessed. When I started out, I was a single woman living in a rented apartment and was living check to check. An older podiatrist who I was working for suggested that I branch out on my own and open up my own Dr. Lauren Schwartz practice. My first thought was, ‘That’s DPM @ North Shore Podiatry impossible.’ Since that time, with a lot of support, emotionally and financially, I opened up a one-room office within another doctor’s office, with my mother answering the phones. That led to other opportunities and eventually taking over a retiring doctor’s practice and buying the office space. So now, I am the proud mother of an 18-year-old son, who is going to college, and I am a homeowner. I also own two practices, [and] employ two amazing female doctors, my wonderful office manager and three loyal staff members. The purpose of telling you all this is to encourage all women to never, ever think anything is impossible. I believe that women gain strength and confidence from other women who have gone through similar experiences. I have a female mentor who I will call from time to time with various issues and problems. I, in turn, am thrilled to pay it forward, and have several women who confide in me with their issues and problems. My advice is to believe in yourself, never let go of your dreams, know you can have it all, and remember that absolutely nothing is impossible!”

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO PURSUE YOUR PROFESSION?

Frances Lisner, Real-Estate Salesperson @ Daniel GaleSotheby’s International Realty: “There is something special about Manhasset, in that it becomes part of you and your identity. I was raised in Manhasset and have always felt a deep sense of pride in my hometown. I am inspired by Frances Lisner an innate commitment to serving Real-Estate Salesperson @ Daniel my community and improving the Gale-Sotheby’s International Realty lives of my neighbors. Home is more than just an asset; it is where the priceless moments of our lives happen. After my own personal experience of buying and selling real estate, I felt there should be a more transparent approach and better results than simply getting the deal done. Because of my experience as a tech-sales executive and

Kristin Trunz, Licensed Real-Estate Salesperson @ Douglas Elliman Real Estate: “My number one role in life is being [the] mom of my three greatest joys: Holly [8], Will [6] and Charlotte [4]. Born and raised in Manhasset, I have a deep love and bond for this incredible town. I knew it was the only place I wanted to raise my children. Two years ago when my youngest started school, I pursued my passion Kristin Trunz for real estate. I was fortunate to join Licensed Real-Estate Salesperson Douglas Elliman and what an amazing @ Douglas Elliman Real Estate journey it has been. I love everything about houses from the foundation, to the fixtures to navigating my clients in the search of finding their perfect home. I recall my first inspiration as a young girl looking through my mom’s Traditional Home and Architectural Digest magazines. Another inspiration is my love for every stage of the real-estate process, from formulating a plan, staging, marketing to execution and everything in between. I take my work very seriously and am always available 24/7. My partner, Sue Higgins, inspires me. She has been my mentor and guiding light. I learn everyday from her and most of all she is

an example how you can raise a family and have a successful career at the same time. And last but certainly not least, my clients inspire me. Without them my career would not be possible. I am grateful for every single one of them and fortunate enough to call them my friends. The joy of helping them find their perfect home is the gift that keeps on giving.”

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO YOUNG WOMEN AS THEY CONSIDER THEIR FUTURE? Traci Conway Clinton, Fine-Home Specialist & Licensed Real-Estate Salesperson @ Compass: “I know it sounds cliche, but finding your passion and pursuing a path that will enable you to develop that passion will give you the best Traci Conway Clinton chance at attaining a satisfying Fine-Home Specialist & Licensed and successful career. The biggest Real-Estate Salesperson @ Compass mistake one can make is following someone else's path or pursuing a career because of some preconceived notion of what you are supposed to do. Be self-aware; understand where your interests lie, as well as your strengths and weaknesses and find the path that is the best fit for you. Run toward what you love, toward what speaks to you. When our hearts and minds are in sync with each other, we are truly making the best decisions.”

Nancy Morris, State Farm Insurance Agent @ Nancy H. Morris Agency, Inc.: “Keep an OPEN mind! Interview people about their careers: What was their attraction? Their likes/dislikes about their choice? You never know where these discussions may lead! I would have rather been a country-music performer singing duets with Garth Nancy Morris Brooks or Dolly, but since that didn’t State Farm Insurance Agent @ work out…. I love going to the office and Nancy H. Morris Agency, Inc. helping people make good choices about protecting their assets. It’s very liberating to own your own business and make decisions that control your destiny every day.” Brittany Schneller, Co-Owner/ General Manager/Instructor @AKT Manhasset: “My advice is to stay grounded and focused on themselves and their future. Listen to your heart, your inner voice, and let it be the compass to guide you in life. Don’t change to fit in. Fitting is trying to be a copy of someone else. PET CORNER PETS OF THE MONTH

Mila and Autumn Fera by Jodi Fera

W

e have always had Maltese dogs; we love them. My husband bought me our very first Maltese as a wedding gift in 1991. Mila is our four-year-old Maltese. She is super-intelligent, very cuddly and the perfect fit for our family. Throughout the pandemic. Mila began to have significant separation anxiety. We had been living primarily at our house out east, and since we were all home all the time, she was never alone. When things started to lighten up, it got to a point where we really couldn't leave her alone at all. We began to discuss getting a second dog, and before we knew it, in came Autumn. Autumn is seven months old. They were not fast friends and Mila was not very happy to have a new puppy living with us. It has taken a few months, but they love each other, and Mila has accepted Autumn as family. Both dogs love to take car rides, go for walks, eat, play, snuggle, go for stroller walks and pose for the camera. Follow them on Instagram @Fera_Fur_Babies.

ADOPT A FURBABY

Gentle Gizelle By Ilene Schreibman, North Shore Animal League America Gizelle is a shy two-year-old whose preference for peace and quiet made Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center the perfect temporary setting… But now it’s time we find this terrific tabby a real home of her very own. When Gizelle arrived at our Port Washington campus from North Carolina, she was deemed physically healthy, but her spirit seemed shaken. Our feline behavior team nurtured her gentle soul in a quiet, sunny, cage-free room and offered her plenty of time to acclimate to her new surroundings. It took time, but with patience and love, Gizelle shed a great deal of her timid nature and opened her heart to the humans caring for her daily and gradually began to enjoy gentle ear rubs. Now, Gizelle is enjoying friendships with her feline roommates and is often first in line for treats. Still, she can sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed by the day; and when she does, she’ll retreat to the quieter corners of the room to decompress and recharge, though she’s open to a touch of tenderness from a human buddy who is familiar with her body language and signals.

wonderful, social milestones along the way. Although she’d be happy with feline siblings in the home, she’d be just as content as the only pet. A predictable, calm household will build her confidence and help this tender tabby adjust to her first ever real home.

The ideal home for Gizelle would be one with adults with cat experience and, if there are children, it would be best they are above the age of six, who will continue to nurture her introverted nature while celebrating her

If you’d like to offer Gizelle a Zen lifestyle where she can be a cherished family member and bask in the sunshine streaming through your windows, please reach out to DoritS@animalleague.org.

The Benefits Of Full-Service Finance Management By Corey Peterson, Wealth Management Expert, Bayside Tax & Wealth

W

hen it comes to your financial advisors, most people have an accountant to prepare their taxes, an investment advisor to help with investments and an insurance broker to help review their policies. Maybe you also have an estate planner and financial planner to help point you in the right direction.

can be realized. Beyond planning solely for retirement, is it also important for you to save for children’s college or inheritance? Or buy a vacation or rental home? Do you have to make major renovations to your home to help your parents? Understanding the costs of these plans is the key to not running out of money at the wrong time.

While they all may be great individually, have there been times where you felt not all of your advisors were working in unison to give you the best advice? What about the time wasted coordinating between the advisors, and the opportunities missed because they don’t talk to each other every day about your finances?

Projections determine insurance needs, amount and type, as well as other aspects of your financial plan.

An easier and more financially effective approach to consider is to have one team to manage your finances. The benefits make smart sense not only from your time perspective, but also to ensure you are covered in every aspect of your personal finances and no opportunities are missed. No longer will you have to separately consult with a financial planner, insurance representative, investment manager, accountant and estate planner. One finance team with a full-service finance-management firm will coordinate all of these functions for you and/or work with your existing advisors to ensure that everyone is moving in the same direction to optimally meet your needs. So whether your goal is to find income-tax reduction strategies, obtain financial independence long before most people can retire, save for your children’s college, buy a second home, spend money more freely or all of the above, a full-service finance manager is an outstanding choice. Financial Planning For Today, Tomorrow & Beyond What are your spending habits and needs? How much do you need for retirement or for your children’s college? Should you consider a comprehensive estate plan or will a simple estate plan do for now? A full-service finance manager will work with you to develop a financial plan that addresses all of these questions and more. Cash Flow, Savings & Insurance By identifying your annual spending, a finance manager will help you determine what your needs are, and when and where potential savings

Investment Management: Retirement, College & More A full-service finance manager will help to determine your appropriate asset allocation and review which investments you may have too much or too little of no matter where the money is — 401(k)s, investment accounts or even under the cushions — before making recommendations for rebalancing. Estate Planning: You’re Never Too Young From children who have recently gone away to college, newlyweds and parents with newborn children, having a basic estate document is essential in carrying out your final wishes and giving the right people access to your personal information. For those further along in life, setting up trusts that may outlive even your children, meet philanthropic goals or otherwise ensuring your hard-earned savings are distributed exactly how you want is very reassuring. Of course, all estate documents are meant to evolve as your family grows and situations change. We’ll work with you and your attorney to develop a plan that works now and well into the future. Checking, Savings, Bonds Oftentimes, people are averse to investing spare cash, especially in a volatile market. Conversely, some delay raising cash for short-term needs in anticipation of higher returns. Both of these scenarios can create more heartburn than investment returns.

MANHASSET WOMEN TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS RIGHT UNDER THEIR OWN ROOF

By Kristin Gallagher

If there is one thing the pandemic has taught us, it’s that the benefits of running a business out of your house go beyond just having a great commute. Right here in Manhasset, there are a number of people who have started their own home businesses, many of whom are women. Here is just a sample of our town’s amazing female entrepreneurs, who have found that when it comes to carving out their careers, there’s no place like home.

Good Sport:

How Teresa Weston Gets A Kick Out Of Helping Manhasset's Young Girls Reach Their Goals By Student Contributor Eliana Linder

Manhasset Sports is proudly sponsored by Parsa Samii, Real Estate Salesperson, Compass, Sport & Entertainment Division

M

| BestVersionMedia.com

anhasset is known for its phenomenal sports programs, with multiple D1 athletes graduating each year. But oftentimes, with this comes a cutthroat environment between players to make the best teams. These conditions are introduced at a very young age, pitting athletes against each other, which is what Manhasset resident and momof-three Teresa Weston aimed to fight against with the creation of For Girls, By Girls. This annual summer camp is perfect for young girls who want to have fun during the summer with their friends and play sports, without all of the pressure. For Girls, By Girls represents women standing together and supporting each other while having fun and learning from D1 athletes. “I want to make sure these girls have an environment where we are refining their skills, but also—and more importantly—developing the mental side of the sport(s),” shares Weston.

20

Kicking off in 2014 when her oldest child, Julia, now 14, was in first grade, the camp was designed for girls going into kindergarten all the way to fifth grade. It is now a four-day program with locations in Port Washington, Garden City, and Manhasset with varying dates. An average day at camp includes one hour of soccer and one hour of lacrosse; but part of what makes this camp even more unique is the inclusion each day of a special activity, which has in the past included visits from the Hance Family Foundation and sports psychiatrists, as well as yoga and dance teachers. "The camp is a fun environment, while providing a high level of training," she notes. For Queens-native Weston, the concept of a small, close-knit town like Manhasset was initially unfamiliar to her when she moved here in 2013. Since then, not only have she and husband Robert had two more children (sons Peter, 11, and Sandro, 9), but Weston also runs youthfocused Kick Start Soccer Academy with business partner Jacklyn James, and she has also become a pillar of the community. Playing soccer at Boston University for four years (two of which she served as team captain), Weston is armed with a unique set of skills perfect for this camp. “I recall that pressure at a higher level, trying out for state,

MANHASSET Living

regional and national teams,” she reflects. When it comes to younger athletes, “They don’t understand that you can be friends and still compete for a spot on a team.” Currently, For Girls, By Girls is run by Weston, James and Tracey Hansman. James, whose dad coached Weston in her youth, went to St. John’s University, where she played D1 soccer for four years; while Hansman played both D1 lacrosse and soccer for Central Connecticut State University. When asked about the relationship between the three of them, Weston responds, “Oh, I just love them,” perfectly representing the tight-knit relationship that this trio have created. Although For Girls, By Girls is meant to be a fun camp for girls to learn and make new friends, Weston adds that, “All of our coaches are all D1 athletes, with years of training,” giving the girls not only a positive experience but an informative one, as well. “My high-school team had to ask a basketball player to come play goalie since we didn’t have enough girls, therefore I had to play with the boys growing up,” Weston shares. “These girls are so blessed to have the numbers that we have to even have tryouts [for their sports teams] at a young age!” One of the best parts of For Girls, By Girls is the group of young women who help run the program. As well as having professionally trained coaches, there are also a number of high-school volunteers, who are there, “to help tie [the campers’] shoes and play games with the girls,” she smiles. “Also, it’s a great way for the high-school girls to get community-service hours.” Due to the fact that this camp has been ongoing for a several years, Weston has been especially gratified to see some of her former campers return to become volunteers, including her own daughter, Julia. The relationship between the campers and volunteers is “close-knit” and both parties enjoy the experience. In addition to the focus on soccer and lacrosse techniques, there is also an emphasis on, “mind and body well-being,” over the course of the four days. Not only do

MANHASSET SPORTS the girls learn about sports, they also learn about the importance of respecting one’s body and how to treat it well on and off the field. In summary, For Girls, By Girls is an outstanding camp with high-level training that creates a safe and inclusive environment for young female athletes. “A problem I’ve noticed is that [girls] weren’t being taught that the most important lesson is to work together to win; it was more important to be the star,” concludes Weston. In creating For Girls, By Girls, she hopes to enforce a more healthy, productive and collaborative approach. “I read a quote that I loved: ‘If we focused on creating team captains more than MVPs, we would be creating much better teams and people.’ And that, I think, is what we try to achieve.” For Girls, By Girls camp runs this summer from June 27-30 at Harbor Links in Port Washington; July 11-14 at St. Paul's in Garden City; and in August at Manhasset Valley Park (dates TBD). For more information, about the camps or volunteer opportunities, send an email to Forgirls. bygirlscamp@gmail.com.

RECIPE

An Irish Grandmother's

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls By Kristin Gallagher When you come from a family whose matriarch is named Alice Gerrity Gallagher, you better believe that she tucked away more than a few Irish-themed recipes in her old cookbook. Luckily for myself and the rest of my giant clan, even though sweet Alice left us for the green, green hills of heaven many years ago, my cousin, Alison, painstakingly compiled all of the hand-written recipes our beloved Gram left behind for us. So in honor of St. Patrick’s Day—and in memory of one of the loveliest lasses around—here is Alice Gallagher’s recipe for stuffedcabbage rolls. Enjoy and Sláinte!

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• 1 head of cabbage

1. Core and put the cabbage in a pot filled with cold water; bring to a boil.

• 2 pounds of ground beef • 11/2 cups of rice (cooked in three cups of salt water)

2. Cover the pot and leave the cabbage in water until leaves are soft. (Save the cabbage water!)

• 1 onion (not necessary)

3. Mix together the ground beef, onions and spices/herbs in a separate bowl.

• 1 large can of tomatoes (or tomato paste, soup or sauce)

4. Take a cooked-cabbage leaf and fill it with 2-3 Tbsp. of the meat mixture (depending on size of cabbage leaf).

• 1/4tsp. of thyme • Salt and pepper to taste • Parsley

5. Tuck in the sides and tops of the filled cabbage leaf and then place each roll in the bottom of a baking dish; make sure the rolls are close together. 6. Put approximately 11/2-2 cups of cabbage water over the rolls. 7. Coat the rolls with the canned tomatoes (or paste, sauce or soup).

8. Cover and cook for about 11/2-2 hours.

Potatoes dinner must remain a secret (lest a leprechaun steal it!), Matt has generously shared with us some tips for making this traditional St. Patrick’s Day dish good enough to make you want to do an Irish jig! “Buy the best corned beef you can find,” suggests Matt. “After boiling your corned beef in water for 3 hours, remove the meat, but leave the water in the pot. Boil the same water again and use it to cook your potatoes. Remove the potatoes and boil the cabbage (again, using the same water).” Promises Matt, “This will make everything much more flavorful! Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” Connolly’s Corner is located at 71-15 Grand Avenue, Maspeth, NY 11378, and features a diverse menu filled with Irish and American favorites, as well as a fully stocked bar, 12 flat-screen TVs, four private party spaces and an outdoor beer garden with a retractable roof.
