We think you will definitely be thankful to meet our cover couple, high-powered legal eagle Ariana Tadler and her equally prolific producer/actor/writer/ stuntman/firefighter/Parks Commissioner husband, David Paterson. These longtime residents are passionate about helping others within our community and beyond. Giving Tuesday is coming up at the end of the month, so we’ve compiled a list of Manhasset-based non-profits so you can "pay it forward" on a local level. (And don't forget about Small Business Saturday this month, too!) Discover the beauty and tradition behind the holiday of Diwali, as expressed by local author (and former ML cover model!), Shiva Kumar. We celebrate the grand re-opening of our wonderful sponsor and top music school, Pluckd Studio. This boutique school is ready to help its students make beautiful music. Also, get a taste of what you can expect at the stunning new Japanese fusion restaurant Kissaki, which recently opened on Plandome Road. Enjoy a recap of Manhasset’s annual Homecoming parade and football game (spoiler alert: we won!), check out a recent meet-up between local Girl Scout Troops and Town Supervisor (and Manhasset resident) Jennifer DeSena, who welcomed the Scouts into Town Hall to help them earn their Democracy badge. We are thankful, as well, for the many meaningful community events that have been going on in the past couple of weeks, including the annual MWCABC 5K Walk/ Run, a charitable golf outing, and an incredible public concert meant to raise funds for a beloved former MHS teacher living with ALS. And, of course, meet Pet Of The Month Ozzie Moon Roth and Adoptable Furbabies Coco Chanel and Snuggles! And we would be remiss if we didn’t express our genuine thanks and gratitude to you, our loyal readers, for your tremendous support. We couldn’t do it without you! All this and more! Sincerely,

A Match Made In Heaven: HONORING THE LATE

TIMOTHY AHERN, SR. With A Charity Golf Outing

I

t seems only fitting that a charitable outing in the name of a native lad of Ireland—the late Timothy Ahern, Sr., founder of Ahern Painting Contractors, Inc.,—should take place on a beautiful day with green, green hills serving as a backdrop. And such was the case for the third-annual Tim Ahern, Sr. Scholarship Fund Golf Outing, held this year on Thursday, October 5th at Plandome Country Club. It was with honor and pride that Mr. Ahern’s son, Kieran, Sr. (President of Ahern Painting Contractors) and daughter, Gail Ann Harney, celebrated the life of their beloved father, who passed away in 2015, with this year’s annual golf outing, benefitting the scholarship fund set up in Tim, Sr.’s name. The scholarship, awarded to the son or daughter of Local Union 806 (the bridgepainters union), provides funding for any secondary-school education that the winning recipient/recipients should need. As one of the founding members of the New York Structural Steel Painting Contractors Association, it seemed to his family only fitting that Mr. Ahern’s legacy of rewarding hard work should live on through this scholarship.

For this outing, 130+ golfers participated in the fun and festive outing, with even more attendees participating in the annual post-match dinner. The activities began at 9am with registration, continuing throughout the day with a lovely brunch, many rounds of golf, a cocktail hour and a dinner during which prizes for the day’s achievements were awarded. This year alone, over $50,000 has been raised for the Tim Ahern, Sr., Scholarship Fund. “It was a wonderful event,” shares Gail Ann and Kieran, Sr. “Our father would

The 2023 recipients: Sabrina Guerreri (Adelphi University), Mary Frangos (University of Pittsburgh), Eva Jakacic (St. John’s University) and Yianniko Frangos (University of Cincinnati) received $10,000 apiece to go toward the costs of attending their respective colleges. Although he didn’t attend college himself, Mr. Ahern—who emigrated to the United States from Ireland at the age of 19 with little in his pocket, but big dreams ahead— his son, Kieran, Sr., and daughter, Gail Ann, felt an academic scholarship was the perfect fit to honor their father, who had exhibited tremendous generosity toward others throughout his life.

have been delighted that this outing and scholarship is being held in his name. He was always an advocate of the working man, and it was his supreme honor to help out others whenever possible. We know that our father was smiling down from heaven on this event, as he does every day on those who loved him most. He would feel nothing but incredible pride knowing that his son, Kieran, Sr., myself and his son-in-law, Liam Harney [Vice President] are taking the family company forward and building on the foundation he paved for us.” Adds Kieran, Sr., “We are so appreciative of the turnout for the golf outing, as well as the ongoing support of both our company and our father’s legacy. He understood completely the importance of working together to achieve a goal—of acknowledging the efforts of others in a shared success. My family and our family-run company could not be more proud than to celebrate the life and innovative spirit of Tim Ahern, Sr., and we look forward to many more years of honoring achievement through hard work and supporting each other."

s a child growing up in India, Diwali was a magical time. In early October, the stifling heat starts to retreat, and the air turns deliciously cooler. While the festival of Diwali has deep mythological, religious, cultural, and historical significance, to me, it just meant new clothes, an abundance of delicious food, fireworks, and parties with all my friends. It was New Year’s Eve, July 4th, Thanksgiving, and Christmas all rolled into one. We kids would run from house to house, gorging on sweets and gathering gifts. Where I lived in India, it didn’t matter if you were Hindu, Muslim, Christian or Buddhist. We all celebrated Diwali, because it was the best festival of the year. As the South Asian population all over the U.S., and particularly on Long Island, has increased significantly, Diwali has entered the popular lexicon. This year, Diwali falls on Sunday, November 12, and Monday the

13th will be an official New York City publicschool holiday for the first time. So, it’s probably time to provide a simple primer on this joyous festival. Quoting from this article should earn you a few brownie points with your Diwali-celebrating friends. The word Diwali comes from the Sanskrit word “deepavali," meaning “rows of lighted lamps." Many consider Diwali to be the start of a new year—a time to settle debts and make peace. It’s common for people to reach out to loved ones whom they may have lost touch with and organize large family reunions. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, Diwali is the festival for you. The most delicious tradition is the gifting of mithai or sweets. Be warned, they are quite sweet, but do try them. They are addicting. Diwali, the festival of lights, stretching back 2,500 years, celebrates the symbolic victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. There are countless origin stories. The one I connect with most is from the beloved Indian epic, The Ramayana, where Prince Rama battles the demon King Ravana, who had kidnapped his wife, Sita. After defeating the demon, Rama returns triumphantly to his capital, Ayodhya with Sita. The citizens, overjoyed, put on their best clothes, exchanged gifts and lined the streets with millions of flickering lamps to

welcome them home. And that was the first celebration of Diwali, the festival of lights. Sikhs, Jains, and Buddhists have their own Diwali stories. For Sikhs, Diwali commemorates the release of the 17thcentury guru, Hargobind, after 12 years of imprisonment by the Mughal emperor, Jahangir. Jains observe Diwali as the day that Lord Mahavira achieved nirvana. And Buddhists celebrate it as the day Emperor Ashoka, who ruled in the third-century B.C., converted to Buddhism. Today, outside India, the South Asian diaspora celebrates Diwali to connect with, embrace and educate the next generation and their adopted community at-large about India’s rich culture and heritage. So, if you can, wangle an invitation to one of the many Diwali celebrations in your neighborhood. You will not regret it.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Born in India, Shiva Kumar, an author, actor, and filmmaker grew up in a traditional family where the fables of Indian life enveloped him like the humid dawn of a steamy Madras day. Schooled in England, Egypt, India, and the United States, he discovered a love for mythology, history, archeology, science fiction and fantasy. But it took another four decades before Kumar decided to reimagine the ancient Indian epic, The Ramayana, through a science-fiction and fantasy lens. The first book of his trilogy, An Awakening, is available now on Amazon. Book 2—A New Reality will be available in November, 2023. More info at shivakumarauthor.com.

ANSWERING THE CALL By BRIAN HUGHES, Manhasset Resident

en marching with pins in their hats. Servicewomen saluting American flags. Old uniforms neatly folded. The images of Veterans Day are so well-trodden that writing about them risks losing your attention. And yet, here in Manhasset, Veterans Day is much more than a series of trite images. Take a walk through our town, and take a look for yourself. A glance at the “Gold Star Honor Roll,” on Plandome Road will reveal names representing heroism across generations, all the way back to the Civil War. As you stroll past the playground at Munsey Park Elementary, you’ll see the familiar name of Army Ranger James J. Regan who gave all in Northern Iraq. Each name is a story of ultimate sacrifice, and each story impacted a Manhasset family. But Veterans Day is not always a story of loss. If you walk through our neighborhoods and visit small businesses, you might see West Point flags, Navy stickers in windows and photos of Marines in dress blues. These are the signs of our community’s values. Surely, there are unseen burdens, as well—empty chairs and restless nights—alltoo familiar to families of veterans. But our flags, parades and signs are often evidence of veterans and their families finding peace in everyday life.

▴ Brian Hughes in Kirkuk, Iraq 2008. To this veteran, Veterans Day can be about helping others find that peace through action. So this year, if we want to thank someone for answering the nation’s call, maybe we can all answer our own call. A call to check in on a fellow American who needs our help. A call to serve in government and better our community. A call to participate in the annual Jimmy's Run & Gold Star Memorial 5K in town. Or a call to support Manhasset non-profit Tuesday’s Children, which serves the families of fallen service-members and those who lost a loved one on 9/11. Whatever your calling is in our community, let it take on special meaning this Veterans Day. And if you are interested in supporting Tuesday’s Children, I would be forever indebted for you answering that call. Brian Hughes, who served tours in Iraq and Afghanistan in the U.S. Army, serves on the board of Manhasset's own Tuesday’s Children. For more information, please visit www.TuesdaysChildren.org.

feel immense gratitude towards the Manhasset community for supporting my book (2023), Growing Up in an Immigrant Household and Community: Essays by Descendants of Immigrants, published by Kendall Hunt.

Scalzo, whose first language was Italian, looks back on a negative incident in school that made her feel different from her peers; my oldest son, Emanuel Giouroukakis (17 years old), writes about his paternal grandfather and his legendary reputation; my youngest son, Paul Giouroukakis (13 years old), recounts his fond memories of growing up with his Greek maternal grandfather, who taught him the values of hard work and family.

Six of the contributors are Manhasset residents, dear friends and family, and their essays shine a light on different cultural experiences with common elements, like traditions, family, food, values, etc.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention other Manhasset residents who gave me feedback on some of the essays in the book: Jeff Ciccone, George Menexas, Becky Tountas, and Olga Tsiolis.

Silvia Davi’s brilliant piece focuses on the essayist’s authentic trilingual upbringing in Astoria, NY, where I also grew up, and her immersion into her Sicilian roots. Nazli Diba wrote a beautiful tribute to her Iranian father; Nadia Giannopoulos’s heartwarming essay is about visiting her grandparents in Greece in the summers; Milena

ARIANA TADLER &

DAVID PATERSON INFUSE THEIR PARTNERSHIP AND PROFESSIONS WITH HARD WORK AND HUMOR By KRISTIN GALLAGHER | Professional photos by ASHLEY FAIRFIELD PHOTOGRAPHY witty aspiring-stuntman and a brilliant future-lawyer walk into a bar….

A

With an opening line like that, chances are a corny joke or a cozy Lifetime rom-com is headed your way. But what if it’s neither of those things? What if it is, instead, the beginning of a lovely romance—one that has lasted for over three decades? In reality, it is the origin of the relationship between Manhasset native Ariana J. Tadler and her husband, David Paterson, who met in a pub “across the pond” back in the ’80s and now have two grown sons (Carter, 26, and Decker, 23), two wildly disparate-but-highly successful professional lives, and one great love story to show for it. Sitting with them in their beautifully appointed Plandome Heights home, you can’t help but be struck by the fact that while on-paper, you might not necessarily put them together, in actuality, they could not be a better match. Both are passionate about what they do—she, a “tenacious and gracious” attorney who has gone on to found her own now Manhasset-based law firm (Tadler Law, LLP), and establish herself as a sought-after legal mind, eDiscovery authority and keynote speaker; he a prolific creative whose own resume lists writer, firefighter and local official among his callings. But what’s most apparent is their admiration for one another.

Manhasset Living: Let’s start with your backgrounds.

David Paterson: “I grew up in Washington, D.C. And I learned at a young age, because I was small, that bullies don’t hit nearly as hard when

Ariana Tadler: “I grew up until I was 9 in Queens and we moved to Manhasset into what was my mother’s dream home. She’d had her eye on that home for a very long time. They had seen it, but it was too expensive, and then ultimately, quite some time later, my father said one day, ‘Let’s go for a drive.’ They pulled up to that house and he said, ‘This is our new home.’ Shelter Rock [Elementary] was like nirvana to me! Coming from a New York City public school to this beautiful school, which was very cutting-edge, was a game changer. I went to Manhasset High School and I was a New York State Championship goalie for Manhasset. To this day, my closest friends for life are from Manhasset.”

ML: What led you to move back to Manhasset? AT: “We had moved to Queens into the house that my father had actually grown up in. We lived there for five years, had our eldest son, Carter, while living there and then, when I was pregnant with Decker, we finally found a home here. This house was in very bad shape. Thank goodness, David has a construction background.” DP: “We didn’t have a working kitchen; we cooked everything out on the grill. But we had a working shower, our bedroom and the nursery, and that was pretty much it.”

ML: Ariana, you’re then working fulltime as an attorney? they’re laughing. So, I would do stuff to make them laugh. In fact, when I was graduating from sixth grade, the teachers made up a superlative for me: Class Comedian. That’s important: it wasn’t Class Clown. I knew when to be funny and when to shut up, so that was very helpful for the rest of my life. When we moved down to Norfolk, Virginia, I eventually started acting there.” AT: “After high school, I went to Hamilton College. I played lacrosse there for two years, then I went abroad to London to study English Literature, which is where I met David.” DP: “After high school, I went for one year to Catholic University. My dad was a preacher, his dad was a preacher, his dad was a preacher…. Then I left for a year and worked in regional theater and went back to Catholic. When I told my dad I wanted to be an actor, he wept openly, because that was the one profession that made less money than a Presbyterian minister.” [David’s mother is Newbery Medal/National Book Award-winning author Katherine Paterson, who wrote the classic children’s book, Bridge To Terabithia, among others.]

ML: Tell us more about London. DP: “I had gone back to Catholic for a year, and then I went on-tour with the National Players, which is the oldest national Shakespearean touring company in the country. Then, I went to England for a year, because I wanted to be a stunt man and there were no programs really in the U.S. at that time. I studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts.”

ML: How did you meet? DP: “I took a playwriting course while I was there, and I would write in pubs. So, I’m at this pub and I hear this laughter and this very sexy voice, to me, with a Long Island/Queens accent; I was instantly smitten. I walked up to the bar, there were two blondes; I told a joke, only one laughed … and we’ve been together for 35 years ever since!” AT: “36.” DP: “36! And she still laughs at my jokes. When we returned to the States, I proposed to her a year later and she said….”

| BestVersionMedia.com

AT [grinning]: “Yes, she said yes. But I did tell him that I wouldn’t marry him until after I graduated from law school. I knew I wanted to be a lawyer from the time I was 13.”

18

DP: “A week after the proposal, I said, ‘I know I asked you to marry me, but I have to go ontour to be a weasel.’ For the next year, I did the national tour of Wind In The Willows, where I played Sneasel the Weasel. I did promise her that as an actor, I would never go lower on the invertebrate scale.”

ML: So David goes on-tour, while you go to law school? AT: “I went to Fordham Law. I’m a big fan of Fordham, including because of the Jesuit philosophy anchored in service.” DP: “One of my favorite things about her is her tremendous faith.” AT: “I had a more unusual path, I think, than most, because I went straight from college to law school; I had worked in some capacity in the legal field, starting in the early years of college; I interned for Judge Ken Molloy, who was a Nassau County Supreme Court justice; and I worked for several large defense law firms. So, when I was at Fordham, I had the opportunity to work very quickly.” DP: “We lived in Hell’s Kitchen then. I continued to work as a struggling actor and a struggling stuntman, but I also did construction work and carpentry. And I landed a small,

AT: “While we were living in Queens, after spending five years with the firm that I had started with, I moved to what was then the best-known, most-successful plaintiff class-action firm. I made partner and was put into management early on, but sadly, the firm had a number of unexpected troubles. I worked with many wonderful people at the firm (many of whom were lifers) and through strategic thinking and collaborative spirit, with changing teams, rebranded the firm three times. I also pivoted regularly in my practice from being a securities-fraud class-action lawyer to a consumer class-action lawyer to a data-breach lawyer. Early in the 2000s, I started focusing on something that’s called ‘electronic discovery’ or ‘eDiscovery.’ When you think about a dispute, data is ubiquitous. Everything you do, from using your computer to your smart watch to your car, there is data. While litigation had always been more paperbased, I realized that the relevant information to prosecute or defend a case was likely going to be electronic or digitized. And so, I started building a niche practice for myself and I was the go-to on that. I, and my colleague, Paul, ultimately built a business line within that law firm. That was my side hustle while I was practicing law and being a managing partner.”

ML: What type of work do you do at Tadler Law? AT: “Tadler Law is a women-owned firm dedicated to providing smart, strategic, and effective solutions for our valued clients. Even though I have been best-known as a plaintiffs’ class-action lawyer, as well as the top eDiscovery lawyer in the country on the plaintiffs’ side, now, at Tadler Law, we do both sides of the ‘v.’ I do class-action work; I also represent employees who need a solution for an exit strategy or perhaps an exit strategy was handed to them and it’s not the right strategy for them. Over the last year, we have developed a solid business litigation and arbitration practice too. We are the go-to lawyers when you need someone who is a strategic problem solver and skilled lawyer and negotiator.” DP: “She did gloss over one thing: who wrote you a letter and asked you to help out?”

© Best Version Media

DP: “And just weeks ago, she was awarded the Justice Shira Scheindlin Award.” AT: “Judge Scheindlin was the judge who wrote the seminal law for electronic discovery. We got to know each other over the years, and she monitored my career. Recently, I was awarded the Shira Scheindlin Lifetime Achievement Award. I am so humbled by this great honor.” DP: “All that she’s done, she has also done as a woman. She had to work 10-times harder.”

ML: Meanwhile, you were pursuing your own career, David? DP: “Once we decided to have kids, I said, ‘I will stay home with them.’ So that’s when I left acting, pretty much; I decided to concentrate on my writing career. In 1998, I became the only playwright in the history of American theater to have three plays premiere in New York on three different stages in one month. One was on Broadway, one was off-Broadway and one was off-off Broadway. And I still couldn’t get an agent out of it! The next big event was 9/11. On the second day after the attack, I got up around 3am and without telling my wife, I put on my hard hat and went into the city to help however I could. I let her know once I got there; I worked there for two days. That really affected me; what I told Ariana when I got home was, ‘I need to do something more with my life.’ So, I joined the ManhassetLakeville Fire Department.”

ML: You continued your writing, as well? DP: “I took one of my plays [called Love, Ludlow], made a cheap movie out of it and submitted it to the Sundance Musical Festival. And it got in! At one point, a reporter from The New York Times called

my captain at the fire department and asked him about me and the Sundance Film Festival and he said, ‘Patty? No, he’s a stay-at-home mom!’ They didn’t know I was a writer, because I didn’t really talk about it. But after that, my writing career really took off. People started returning my phone calls on other projects, and Bridge To Terabithia was one of them.”

ML: How meaningful was it to be able to write/produce this screenplay? DP: “What most people don’t understand is that the book is based on me. When I was 7, I met a girl who became my best friend, and she was tragically killed. And so, my mother wrote this book more out of therapy for herself than me, because they didn’t know how to deal with me. Making that movie, it wasn’t just about honoring my mother and the novel, it was honoring my best friend. People say, ‘How long did it take you to make it?’ And I say, ‘Oh, about 20 years.’ And that was because I was going to protect it until we got it into the right hands.”

ML: What did your mom think of the finished product? DP: “She was over the moon.” AT: “David and his mother have a beautiful relationship. It’s very special.”

ML: The projects that followed are really interesting, as well. DP: “In 2010, I went back to stunt work, and I’ve since worked on Boardwalk Empire, Billions … but my proudest moment was when I was Robin Williams’s stunt double for one of his last films, called The Angriest Man in Brooklyn. I’ve also done several documentaries, including one about the band Journey, [called Don’t Stop Believin’: Everyman’s Journey], which did very well. It’s about the new singer who was discovered online [to replace original frontman Steve Perry]. It was really cool when I was able to take my boys to separate concerts and go backstage. Then it was kind of cool what Dad does [laughs]!” AT: “And then you have The Girl Who Wore Freedom….” DP: “Yes, The Girl Who Wore Freedom is the most recent documentary. It’s been featured on Delta Airlines for two years now. It’s basically about Normandy [France; site of the WWII Allied landing]—3000 Americans died, but what almost no one knows is that 30,000 Normans were killed during the invasion. And yet, if you want to find one place in the world that loves America more than America, it’s Normandy, because we rescued them from four years of occupation. Every year, they celebrate America, they dress up like Americans, they play 1940s music…. And because of our film, last year, Delta Airlines flew 30 veterans of D-Day to Normandy. It was incredible.”

ML: Ariana, tell us about the work you’re doing outside of your law firm. AT: “I’m now in the process of building out two different businesses: first, I’m building a public-speaking business. I am actually doing a speaker series here in Manhasset once a month at Christ Church. And then I’m also building out a master class for communication, professionalism and executive functioning. And the reason is, over the last five years, whether you attribute it to the pandemic or the use of technology by young adults, they are lacking in all of those skills. Carter, our eldest, he kind of just skirted it. And then there’s Decker, who has been in the thick of it more, with two years of a four-year college education being in lockdown in L.A. [at USC]. It’s been challenging, and we’re so proud of both of them—they are both independent and working in their industries of choice. I also mentor a lot of young people.”

ML: David, how did you become a Manhasset Park District Commissioner? DP: “In 2012, I was asked to run for office for the Park District; I was a write-in. I was running against this guy who had been in that position for over 20 years and he did not see me as a threat. But what he didn’t understand is back then, I was literally the only stay-at-home dad in Manhasset and guess who knew me—stay-at-home moms. And guess who voted? Stay-at-home moms in Manhasset. I had no time to campaign, so basically, mothers emailed mothers and said, ‘David Paterson is running for this office,’ and we won. So now, I am one of three Manhasset Park District Commissioners. We deal with the commuter lots, as well as the metered lots and some parks. One of the proudest things I can say is that I created a park during Covid; it’s up by The Little Shop ’Round The Corner.”

| NOVEMBER 2023

AT [laughing]: “Okay, he never gets this right, so I’ll explain. I’ve always been an avid learner; I also speak professionally quite a bit; so one of the things I would do was attend regular meetings of the Federal Civil Rules Advisory Committee, which is responsible for reviewing and amending the rules that govern the procedural aspects of federal practice in the United States. In 2017, I received a letter from [U.S. Supreme Court] Chief Justice Roberts inviting me to sit on the committee. I am currently serving for an additional year, after the completion of two three-year terms.”

AT: “He takes such great pride in that job. He checks the lots every day, personally. He takes so much pride in contributing to Manhasset, between his role as a volunteer fireman and his role as a Manhasset Park District Commissioner. David actively carries out his sense of duty to the community through thought, spirit, and action.”

ML: Any favorite businesses around Manhasset? AT: “We love Louie’s Manhasset. We love Cafe Continental. We love Schout Bay. We are big fans of Raindew. And I grew up going to [the original] Publicans [on which the novel The Tender Bar is based].” DP: “She dated some of the guys in the book!” AT [laughing]: “I did! Like I said, the closest people in my life are from here and I’m so grateful for them. I’m also grateful for the multi-generational relationships that we collectively have.” DP: “And I’m so envious of that. My parents moved from Norfolk after I graduated high school, so I have no ‘home town.’ But I’ve been embraced by her friends here.” AT: “And, of course, there’s Villa Milano. We were very close with Donny [Bekteshi, co-owner, who recently passed away]. Decker would never come home without going to Villa—sometimes straight from the airport!”

ML: Anything else to add? AT: “I think that what is unique about our family is that we all have the ability to pivot and be flexible. We were talking earlier about me starting out as a goalie and having to sort of pivot and flex throughout my career. ALL ABOUT THE SCOUTS! Local Troops Get A Warm Welcome From

Supervisor Jennifer DeSena Submitted by KATE NAISMITH

On Thursday, October 12, Manhasset Girl Scouts Brownie Troop 549 and Junior Troop 536 had the opportunity to meet with Town of North Hempstead Supervisor (and Manhasset resident) Jennifer DeSena to earn their Democracy badges. The second and fifth graders toured Town Hall and admired the entryway walls, decorated with photos and silhouettes of the Supervisors who have served over the years. They were very surprised to see that of the 38 people elected to the office, there have been only three female Supervisors to date! In the meeting room, Supervisor DeSena explained to the two troops her responsibilities as Supervisor and the roles of the many different people who work in Town Hall. She then led a mock board meeting with the girls, during which, among other things, they shared their various points of view on whether teachers should assign homework to students. Surprisingly, the result of the vote was not unanimous!!

FUN AND GAMES: Manhasset’s Homecoming Day Was A Winner All Around By KRISTIN GALLAGHER | Photos Courtesy of ANNE VOELKER elebratory is the best way to describe the overall mood of Manhasset on Saturday, September 30th as Homecoming festivities led to victory on the football field!

C

Adding another “W” to their then-undefeated record, Manhasset High School’s Varsity Football Team controlled the majority of the game against Mepham High School, ultimately claiming bragging rights with a score of 20-13. Ahead of the game, as is Manhasset tradition, a high-spirited parade convened in town, with students, parents, administration reps and community members marching their enthusiastic support from Plandome Road right on down to the school’s stadium field for the big game.

Tickled Pink: Hundreds Put Their Best Foot Forward At THE ANNUAL MWCABC’S 5K! By KRISTIN GALLAGHER

o fully comprehend the tremendous energy and joyful spirit of the Manhasset Women’s Coalition Against Breast Cancer’s annual 5K is to experience it first-hand.

T

Each year, participants gather at Mary Jane Davies Green, among them, breast-cancer survivors, families and friends hailing their warriors, those running/walking in honor of loved ones’ lost, Manhasset School District's students, teachers and staff, the MHS Boys' Track Team, and supporters of every age. And the turnout for the 2023 5K Walk/Run did not disappoint! With upbeat music blasting from a DJ’s speakers, a record number of community members— including Town Supervisor and Manhasset resident Jennifer DeSena—showed up with love in their hearts and sneakers on their feet to affirm their support for one another and the incredible work of the MWCABC. Once the Cash For A Cure raffle winners were announced and the runners/walkers were properly stretched by a local physical therapist, and the National Anthem was performed beautifully by Winnie Concannon and MHS’s Helen Murphy, the participants were off!

| BestVersionMedia.com

Huge kudos and thanks go out to longtime 5K Chairpersons, Aileen Barry and Theresa McCabe, whose tireless efforts before, during and after the event remain unmatched—their selfless dedication and attention to detail remains stellar.

24

The MWCABC would also like to extend their appreciation to volunteers and Class Advisors from the Junior Coalition, who helped make the day run smoothly by helping with everything from set-up to manning coffee stations to checking in and registering participants to handing out T-shirts and cheering on runners/walkers at the finish line and handing out waters, generously donated by Pat Moroney of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty. The magnanimity of event sponsors cannot be overstated, as well—the 5K and the MWCABC’s mission to help fight breast cancer thrives thanks to our community’s kindness. Congratulations to Top Finishers Aidan Sweeney and Kim LiCalzi, as well as this year’s Cash For A Cure’s top-prize winner, Lily Klimuszko. And thank you to the support provided by the volunteers, participants and community members who make this event great—the MWCABC is eternally grateful to one and all. Hosts A Benefit Concert For

MARK VAN SCHENKHOF By ANTONIETTA MANZI

n October 14th, The Women’s Club of Flower Hill (WCoFH) hosted a charity concert for beloved former MHS Chorus Teacher, Mr. Mark Van Schenkhof, who is currently battling

O ALS.

Mr. Van Schenkhof, known as “Mr. V.” to his students, is a mentor and a big part of the Manhasset and Port Washington community. Selecting a musical event seemed like the best way to support Mr. V. Mr. Van Schenkhof first started working in the District at Manhasset Middle School in 1999, moving to the High School two years later. He was also the organist and choir director for Saint Stephen’s Episcopal Church on Carlton Avenue in Port Washington. Mr. V. has been valiantly battling ALS for the past seven years. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, and it has taken a severe toll on Mr. V.'s physical and financial health, leaving him partially paralyzed and in a wheelchair. The Benefit Concert was an open event to everyone in the community, not only Club members. Guests enjoyed a live music performance by County Line Band. County Line is a dance-centric, live country-music band from Long Island, playing the best of modern country, crossover country, and Southern rock.

over 20 years. The least we can do is give him back some of our love as a thank-you for all he did for us and the surrounding community for so long. It’s hard to describe the impact he had on all of us,” Lavin said. “It wasn’t just music. Everything he taught us has stayed with us all this time.” The WCoFH, founded in 1949, spans three beautiful towns on the North Shore of Long Island. These towns include Manhasset, Port Washington, and Roslyn. The object of The Women’s Club of Flower Hill is to promote civic, social, and cultural interests among its members and raise funds for charitable and philanthropic purposes. For those interested in learning more about helping with Mr. Van Schenkhof's journey, please email The Women's Club of Flower Hill at flowerhillwc@gmail.com. And please visit www. womensclubflowerhill.com/ to learn about WCoFH.

In attendance was Julie Lavin, a 2005 Manhasset graduate and co-creator of the fundraiser for Mr. V. “It was such an honor to be able to raise even more funds and awareness for Mr. V. He made such a lasting impact on the students' lives he touched in the Manhasset District for

KISSAKI MANHASSET Makes Its Debut T

he latest opening on Plandome Road here in Manhasset was an exciting one. Kissaki Manhasset has made its long-awaited debut.

Professional photos courtesy of KISSAKI by OMAR ALY

On September 30th, the Manhasset Chamber of Commerce held the official ribbon-cutting for Kissaki, with several members of the local government in attendance, including ToNH Supervisor Jennifer DeSena, Assemblywoman Gina Sillitti, Councilwoman Veronica Lurvey, and Town Clerk Ragini Srivastava. The owners and team at Kissaki were presented with citations upon their opening. About Kissaki Kissaki Manhasset is the fifth location for the brand, with sister locations in NYC, the Hamptons and Connecticut. The upscale yet warm design transports you to an elegant and exotic location upon entering. Principal Owner Garry Kanfer, local Manahsset resident and Co-Owner Frank Casali, his team, and Executive Chef Edgar Valerio aim to marry traditional Japanese and Italian cuisines in a sophisticated blend. Upon dining, you will immediately notice how each dish is carefully curated, using the freshest, mindfully sourced ingredients. You will find traditional favorites, such as shishito peppers and spicy tuna rolls, prepared with a slight Kissaki twist that makes them extra-special. They also serve more unique dishes, such as Uni Pasta and Wagyu crispy rice, that will delight the senses. The cocktail menu includes the best of traditional and more-eclectic favorites, but all have a Kissaki signature that takes them to the next level. If you are not looking for a full-dining experience, the chic bar is sure to be a local favorite, as well. One fun fact is that each dish is served on handmade tableware from local Long Island pottery shop Bridges Pottery. For more information or to make a reservation, visit ExploreKissaki.com. BARK AT THE MOON:

Ozzie Moon Roth

hen the name Ozzie is mentioned, most people’s brains go to two places: one being a kindly TV-dad from the 1950s and the other being the wacky rocker-dad known for biting off the heads of doves on-stage and yelling out, “Sharon!” off-stage. The Ozzie you will be meeting this month—while a rock star in his own right—definitely takes after the former rather than the latter. (And doves throughout Manhasset breathe a collective sigh of relief….)

W

“We call him our little gentleman,” smiles mom Bea of the sweet-tempered 10-year-old Boston Terrier she shares with husband Todd, son Alex, daughter Nikki and family cat Donut, “because he looks like he is wearing a suit and he is so well-behaved.” Case in point: “One adorable thing about Ozzie is that he never takes anything unless it’s given to him, even treats,” shares Bea. “I can balance a treat on his nose until I tell him it’s okay to eat it.” Sweet Ozzie came into the Roth family’s life at a time of great sadness. “We got Ozzie a couple of months after our first dog, Peanut, died unexpectedly at age 7,” Bea shares. “My kids—then aged 10 and 13—and I were pretty devastated with lots of tears. Even our cat, Donut, was depressed. My son, Alex, was pitching hard for a Boston Terrier and constantly trying to show me videos, but I did not want another dog. He finally said, ’I know we can’t really replace Peanut, but I was a boy with a dog, and if we wait too long, it won’t feel like my dog because I will be too old!’ ” Naturally, “My husband caved and found a breeder with Boston pups available,” she notes. “Ozzie was the first-born ‘pick of the litter.’ My daughter, Nikki, wanted the runt, so as a compromise, she got to name him. Ozzie was a dog name from movie she liked, and we chose Moon as his middle name, as in ‘howl at the moon.’ He was delicious and looked like a little panda bear! And ever since that day, he has brought joy to our family and mended our hearts. He acclimated easily and loves to chase Donut—they are frenemies. He is wicked fast and very smart.” As everyone in the family will freely admit, mama Bea is Ozzie’s favorite Roth. “Every morning, he waits at my door until I say he can come in, then curls up in a ball under the covers,” she says. Even more adorable, Bea and Ozzie share a passion for a certain holiday's fashion: “Oh, he loves Halloween and getting dressed up to wait for the kids to come to the house to trick-or-treat!” In addition to always being a good sport, Ozzie enjoys the sporting life he shares with his family at their vacation home on the North Fork. “He loves going to our house in Mattituck,” Bea enthuses. “He has even become a boater and paddle boarder! He just loves being with us as much as we love being with him.”

| BestVersionMedia.com

Proving once again that just like his namesake satellite that brightens the sky each night, Ozzie Moon’s greatest gift is bringing light into his loved ones’ lives, forever chasing away the darkness. (And squirrels. Darkness and squirrels.)

FURBABIES CUDDLY SURVIVORS By LISA BLANCO

his past September, an elderly woman passed away in her apartment and was found by her building's management. Tragically, after her body was removed, the apartment was boarded up, sealing in her beloved 18 cats, which were left alone for days to fend for themselves.

Thankfully, NYC Second Chance Rescue heard about this case and immediately jumped into action. Considering this was a life-or-death situation, the management company removed the boards to allow rescuers in.

The inside of the home was disturbing. The cats had survived days without human contact and were in absolute fear. The rescuers spent hours on-location removing the cats and getting them the medical care they needed. Coco Chanel and Snuggles are two of these precious, rescued cats. These two females, now about 7 years old, narrowly escaped their perilous situation. Thanks to NYCSCR, 17 of the 18 cats survived and are now healthy and fully vetted.
