Start at the Thompson Hill Visitor Center. Continue along the scenic Skyline Drive and descend into the area of West Duluth.

From West Duluth, take Highway 23 (Grand Avenue) south, along the St. Louis River Corridor to explore this growing community, rich in outdoor recreation.

Quarry Park is a short drive up 59th Ave.

Explore the 3.3 mile Waabizheshikana Trail (formerly called the Western Waterfront Trail).

See the historic Edna G. Tug and the iron ore docks from Paul Van Hoven Park. There are picnic tables and a pavilion. Walk the dirt trail over to Agate Bay to explore the lighthouse and downtown waterfront area.

Agate Bay is the main lakefront area of Two Harbors. It is an excellent place to watch huge iron ore ships come and go from the ore docks. Walk along the breakwall to the lightstation to see them up close. There are picnic tables, benches with scenic views, a paved walking path, and a boat launch.

popular waterfalls on the North Shore! From the State Park Visitor Center, take a short walk to see Middle Falls. Then take a hiking loop across three bridges to see Upper, Middle, and Lower Falls.

Note, this park can get very crowded during the peak summer and fall seasons.

SILVER BAY T he Silver Bay area offers some of the best scenery and most spectacular views on the North Shore! Discover hidden waterfalls, high cliffs plunging into Lake Superior, two state parks, backwoods routes through the inland rolling hills, and more. There is so much to explore. Follow along in this guide so you don’t miss a thing!

Silver Bay’s most obvious landmark is the taconite plant. Taconite are small pellets of iron ore that are made here from material brought on trains from Minnesota’s Iron Range, about 100 miles west of Silver Bay. Head to the Silver Bay marina to watch the ships come and go!

Downtown Silver Bay is just off the highway. Turn at the stop light and go up the hill.

You’ll find a grocery store, a couple of restaurants, coffee shop, gas, conveniences, and more. Go and check it out!

Spring Waterfalls: Mid-April - May

When the snow melts in the Superior National Forest, the rivers become engorged with water and create incredibly powerful waterfalls that are heart-pounding to see up close! Many of them are easily accessible along a short hike. See our list of waterfalls on page 20.

Peak Summer: June - August

Summer is short on the Shore, and it’s a popular time to come, for good reason! Escape the heat along Lake Superior, our average summer temperature range is about 50 degrees - 70 degrees Ferenheit (10-21 degrees C). The days are long and beautiful, and there is so much to do. Plan your lodging ahead of time, don’t wing it! Places could be fully booked when you arrive.

Fall Color: September - Mid-October

Take a fall color drive along the lake, or a scenic hike to a mountain top view. The colors of the forest against a bright blue Lake Superior are an incredible sight that will soothe your soul. Weekends on the roads and trails can be quite busy. Come midweek for a more relaxed experience.

Holiday/Off-Season: November - December

The leaves are down, there is only a bit of snow, and it gets dark early. This is the perfect time to hunker down in a cozy cabin on the North Shore! Sit by the fireplace, watch the Lake Superior waves crash in the stormy winds, and shop local at the holiday artist markets that happen Thanksgiving - Christmas.

Also access the Gauthier Creek Trail, and the Superior Hiking Trail. Enjoy the park and trails year-round (Minnesota State Park permit required), with minimal maintenance in the winter. The campground is open May - October.

The most beautiful and iconic views of the North Shore are captured at the eight Minnesota State Parks along Lake Superior. A Minnesota State Park vehicle permit is required for entrance. They cost $7/day or $35/year and are good for all 75 Minnesota State Parks.

waterfalls. Hike to five falls in total. Admire historic structures built by the 1930’s Conservation Corps. Dozens of trails for hiking, biking, skiing, and snowmobiling. The quiet park. Off the beaten path, it has limited development, great hiking, picnicking, and secluded backpacking campsites. Explore the trails around Benson Lake, or along the Manitou River. Make it to the park’s five, remote scenic overlooks.

GRAND PORTAGE 150.8 Known for High Falls, the tallest waterfall

in Minnesota. Located on the border of Canada, it has a 1/2-mile accessible path and boardwalks to two waterfall viewing platforms. Take side trails along the Pigeon River. Accessible picnic pavilion, visitor center, and restrooms.
