MILE MARKERS START AT FROM DOWNTOWN DULUTH 0.0
Ask a local for directions and you’re likely to hear “head east,” when you thought you were heading north. As in “up the North Shore.” The reality is the North Shore runs on a southwest/ northeast angle. Check out the map in the center of the book for a good visual of this. So, if you’re headed up the shore, you’re mostly heading east. If you stand with your back to Lake Superior and look to the surrounding forest, you’re generally looking north.
So if someone tells you to go north, they might mean, “into the woods.” If the route is east, you’re headed toward Canada, while west indicates a Duluth bearing. All paths south will eventually end at Lake Superior, not a bad track to be on at all.

An All-American Road LAKE SUPERIOR’S
NORTH SHORE SCENIC DRIVE
or Highway 61 for short
Minnesota’s Highway 61 - the North Shore Scenic Drive - runs along Lake Superior from Duluth to the Canadian border.
The drive is a voyage through some of America’s most scenic and unspoiled lands. It bisects the shore of the world’s largest freshwater lake and the ancient rock and wooded forests rising above the coast.
Along the way take in the breathtaking views and
opportunities to enjoy nature, historic sites, attractions, parks, villages, local culture, and much more.
The North Shore Scenic Drive was recognized as an All-American Road for the outstanding scenic and recreational opportunities it provides along the beloved North Shore of Lake Superior. It is Minnesota’s only such designation.

The Quiet Seasons
DISCOVER THE BEAUTY OF MINNESOTA’S NORTH SHORE IN NOVEMBER AND APRIL
Summer and fall are the peak seasons on the North Shore, offering the best weather for exploring the Lake Superior beaches, hiking, canoeing, and enjoying vibrant fall colors. While these times draw the biggest crowds, the quieter off-seasons of NovemberDecember-January and April-May offer a deeper, more intimate experience of the region.
The winter period of November, December, and January, with its dark skies and raw landscape, is a time of reflection and dramatic beauty. It’s slow and uncrowded. And if you’re lucky, maybe you’ll see the Northern Lights!
This time of year is also the best wave-watching! The Gales of November bring fierce winds and towering waves to Lake Superior. Look for the Lake Superior surfers this time of year!
In April, the North Shore awakens with waterfall
season! Melting snow feeds the rivers creating some of the most dramatic waterfalls you will ever see. There are about a dozen rivers and waterfalls to visit along the North Shore Scenic Drive.
The sun is out longer, wildlife begins to stir, and the thaw feels like a new beginning. While trails may be muddy, the air is invigorating, perfect for seeing the season in transition.
Visiting during these offseasons means fewer crowds, lower accommodation costs, and a slower pace. Local businesses, galleries, and cafes provide a welcoming retreat, offering a chance to connect with the community and savor the culture of the North Shore.
For those seeking tranquility, dramatic landscapes, and a deeper connection with nature, the off-seasons are uniquely rewarding times to visit.
TIPS FOR VISITING IN THE OFF-SEASONS
Don’t get disappointed if the weather is less than ideal.
Wear layers and be prepared for ice, cold, snow, rain, and/ or mud. Immerse yourself in the experience of nature, that’s part of the fun!
It can be icy in both of the off-seasons! Ice grippers for the bottoms of your shoes usually come in very handy while hiking. Hiking poles are nice too.
Get the deals!
Lodging rates are usually the lowest available during the off-seasons. Be sure to check for deals and book online in advance. The best values are for multiple-night stays, so plan a getaway and save!
Check the hours of operations.
The off-seasons are when things finally slow down for the locals and shop owners. Expect to see reduced hours and seasonal closures. If there’s a place you don’t want to miss, doublecheck their hours and plan accordingly!
TAKE A SCENIC LOOP FINLAND! through
A few miles north (inland) is Finland, Minnesota, nestled in the rugged Baptism River valley. Finnish and Scandinavian farmers settled here in the 1890’s. Now you will find a few restaurants, the local cooperative grocery and gas station, hiking trails, and the off-thebeaten-path Crosby Manitou State Park. Take a scenic drive to explore this beautiful region of the Lake Superior highlands!

LUTSEN
T ucked along the Poplar River, between the Sawtooth Mountains and the shore of Lake Superior, Lutsen is Minnesota’s original getaway.
It’s home to Minnesota’s first resort (Lutsen Resort), the Midwest’s largest ski area (Lutsen Mountains), and one of Minnesota’s most spectacular golf courses (Superior National).
It’s no wonder why Lutsen remains one of Minnesota’s most sought-after vacation destinations.
The ridges along the Sawtooth Mountains boast some of the North Shore’s most beautiful views. The Lutsen-Tofte area is famous for its fall color thanks to the maple trees that stretch along this part of the Sawtooth Mountains. While you’re here, check out the local maple syrup makers!
In the winter enjoy outstanding alpine skiing, world-class Nordic ski trails, fat tire biking, and hundreds of miles of snowmobiling.
Be sure to visit the small, independent shops and services in downtown Lutsen where you can pick up almost anything from fishing lures to a handmade quilt!

SNOWSHOEING
An easy activity for the novice winter enthusiast! Strap on a pair of these babies and off you go to blaze a trail through the fresh fluff. Purchase or rent a pair from a local resort or outdoor shop.
WHITE WINTER
W hen the landscape turns into a soft blanket of snow that glistens in the sun, and the sea smoke rises up from Lake Superior, it’s like a different world...one that beckons to be explored!
And, oh, how we love our snow! People on the North Shore go by the saying, “There’s no bad weather, just bad gear.” With snow on the ground from November through April (and longer!), you can bet your winter boots that we’ve got tons of ways for winter play.
For the indoorsy folk, the North Shore has you covered, too. Cold temperatures outside are welcomed by warm fires and hot cocoa inside. Winter on the North Shore invites you to slow down, get cozy, and relax in the present moment.
Many resorts and cabins offer these types of experiences while being at the doorstep of some of the most remote and scenic trail systems to be found anywhere.
CROSS COUNTRY SKIING
With over 500 km of groomed trails, the North Shore offers world-class Nordic skiing. Glide along ridgelines, canyon edges, frozen lakes and rivers, and through the Boreal forest. Trails are usually groomed for both skate and classic skiing. Many resorts offer packages, rentals, maps and shuttle service.
SNOWMOBILING
Hundreds of miles of backwoods routes take riders to some of the most rugged and scenic places in Minnesota. The 146-mile C.J. Ramstad/North Shore State Trail connects Duluth and Grand Marais and provides access to even more club and community trails.
DOG SLEDDING
Take the ride of your life! Bundle up and explore the wintery woods from a sled pulled by a trained dog team. Guides in Isabella, Hovland, and the Gunflint Trail can bring you on this awesome adventure. It’s exhilarating, safe, and memorable.
FAT TIRE BIKING
Ride the backcountry forest roads or the fat tire trails at Split Rock Lighthouse State Park, Pincushion Mountain in Grand Marais, or the Norpine Trails in Lutsen. More mountain bike trails are in development. Stay tuned!
EXPERIENCE HYGGE
Hygge (hue-guh) is the Scandinavian word to describe a feeling of quiet coziness and a soft feeling of contentment and well-being. Relax by the fire, work on a puzzle, watch the ice shards lap against the Lake Superior Shore, spend time with family, and enjoy the present moment.
