adventure at the head of the Lakes in Duluth, Minnesota - the gateway to the North Shore. You will fall in love with the alluring array of outdoor recreation, breathtaking scenery, unique attractions, and fascinating history. Duluth is where urban vibes meets the wilderness lifestyle. The ruggedness of Lake Superior and the surrounding Boreal forest are reflected in the spirit of the city and its residents.

SW

Its easy to transition from the town to the trail! Duluth prides itself on its world-class hiking, biking and skiing trails, city parks, and natural areas. Most unique of all are: its amazing Lake Superior waterfront and breathtaking overlooks. They are easy to access throughout the city. This is a good place to trade in your dress shoes for hiking boots. You’ll feel comfortable wearing them to a cocktail bar, museum, or to an afternoon strolling the art galleries and shops. Before Duluth became a hot spot for visitors and adventure seekers, it was the largest seaport in the U.S., circa 1900. Today the Duluth Harbor is the biggest inland harbor in the world. Don’t miss watching the big ships come and go under the one-of-a-kind Aerial Lift Bridge! Duluth’s industrial heritage is reflected in today’s entrepreneurs, makers, and artists that make up the fabric of the city. Experience this firsthand by enjoying handmade craft by local artisans at breweries, distilleries, eateries, art studios, retail shops, and more. Follow this guide to find the best things to do in Duluth! 2 | North Shore Explorer | 2024

I SAY

East

N W

E S

YOU SAY

North

Ask a local for directions and you’re likely to hear “head east,” when you thought you were heading north. As in “up the North Shore.” The reality is the North Shore runs on a southwest/northeast angle. Check out the map on the back cover for a good visual of this. So, if you’re headed up the shore, you’re mostly heading east. If you stand with your back to Lake Superior and look to the surrounding forest, you’re generally looking north. So if someone tells you to go north, they might mean, “into the woods.” If the route is east, you’re headed toward Canada, while west indicates a Duluth bearing. All paths south will eventually end at Lake Superior, not a bad track to be on at all.

Don’t miss the shops, restaurants, and resorts in this area! Stop for ice cream, gas, great gifts, and some local flavor.

Bay sits at the mouth of the beautiful Beaver River. It provides one of the most accessible waterfall views on the North Shore from the Highway 61 bridge! Park at the wayside and take the sidewalk to the bridge. If you’re feeling adventurous, take the hiking trail down to where the river meets Lake Superior and explore the rocky beach.

Fun facts about Beaver Bay include: It is the oldest settlement on the North Shore, established in 1856. Its population is 121. It is the birthplace of the legendary John Beargrease, who delivered mail by dogsled for 20 years and is the namesake of the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon.

or Highway 61 for short Minnesota’s Highway 61 - the North Shore Scenic Drive - runs along Lake Superior from Duluth to the Canadian border. The drive is a voyage through some of America’s most scenic and unspoiled lands. It bisects the shore of the world’s largest freshwater lake and the ancient rock and wooded forests rising above the coast. Along the way take in the breathtaking views and

opportunities to enjoy nature, historic sites, attractions, parks, villages, local culture, and much more. The North Shore Scenic Drive was recognized as an All-American Road for the outstanding scenic and recreational opportunities it provides along the beloved North Shore of Lake Superior. It is Minnesota’s only such designation.

The ridges along the Sawtooth Mountains boast some of the North Shore’s most beautiful views. The Lutsen-Tofte area is famous for its fall color thanks to the maple trees that stretch along this part of the Sawtooth Mountains. While you’re here, check out the local maple syrup makers! In the winter enjoy outstanding alpine skiing, world-class Nordic ski trails, fat tire biking, and hundreds of miles of snowmobiling. Be sure to visit the small, independent shops and services in downtown Lutsen where you can pick up almost anything from fishing lures to a handmade quilt!

SNOWSHOEING An easy activity for the novice winter enthusiast! Strap on a pair of these babies and off you go to blaze a trail through the fresh fluff. Purchase or rent a pair from a local resort or outdoor shop.

Wonderful

CROSS COUNTRY SKIING

And, oh, how we love our snow! People on the North Shore go by the saying, “There’s no bad weather, just bad gear.” With snow on the ground from November through April (and longer!), you can bet your winter boots that we’ve got tons of ways for winter play. For the indoorsy folk, the North Shore has you covered, too. Cold temperatures outside are welcomed by warm fires and hot cocoa inside. Winter on the North Shore invites you to slow down, get cozy, and relax in the present moment.

Hundreds of miles of backwoods routes take riders to some of the most rugged and scenic places in Minnesota. The 146-mile C.J. Ramstad/North Shore State Trail connects Duluth and Grand Marais and provides access to even more club and community trails.

DOG SLEDDING

Take the ride of your life! Bundle up and explore the wintery woods from a sled pulled by a trained dog team. Guides in Isabella, Hovland, and the Gunflint Trail can bring you on this awesome adventure. It’s exhilarating, safe, and memorable.
