Dear music lovers, visitors, and friends, “In memory everything seems to happen to music” is a wonderful quote by Tennessee Williams. And we all have good memories of David Bowie, Natalie Cole, Glenn Frey, and Prince… just to name a few. Some of them even honored us with memorable and historic performances here in Curaçao! This year marks the 7th edition of a festival that by now has a well-deserved, proven, and unprecedented track record. The latter could not have been achieved without your undivided love and support shown to us over the past years. You have created a success concept and are still making every year a wonderful music journey. A dream come true that is nourished in the hearts of all the music lovers attending. We hope that this year’s program with such a variety of internationally renowned artists will sustain our efforts in trying to make this year’s event an unforgettable experience yet again. R&B singer and songwriter Anthony Hamilton trained his vocal chords from a young age by singing in the church choir. His career got a boost when D’Angelo brought him along as a backing vocalist and a breakthrough followed with a guest role on the song Po’ Folks by hip hop formation Nappy Roots. His platinum-selling second studio album Comin’ From Where I’m From featured the hit single Charlene; to date, Hamilton has sold over 20 million albums. The Grammy Award winner from North Carolina keeps pouring out his southern soul in all his songs, as is the case on his latest album What I’m Feelin’.

BRANFORD MARSALIS QUARTET WITH SPECIAL GUEST KURT ELLING

Saxophonist Branford Marsalis built his musical experience playing with artists such as Art Blakey, Lionel Hampton and Sting. In 1992 he became the bandleader of The Tonight Show house band and in 1995 started touring with his project Buckshot LeFonque, a mix of blues, hip hop, R&B and, of course, jazz. Marsalis will be performing with his ‘working band’: pianist Joey Calderazzo, bassist Eric Revis and drummer Justin Faulkner. As a special guest, singer Kurt Elling will join the band: a versatile vocalist who enters in all sorts of adventures with his material without losing touch with lyrics and content.

Virtually everyone in the world knows at least one song by Burt Bacharach, whether consciously or unconsciously. The master composer, who turns 88 this year, wrote the majority of his classics with lyricist Hal David. Songs like Walk On By, What The World Needs Now Is Love and I Say A Little Prayer are just a few examples among this living legend’s enormous repertoire. Today, this dynamic composer remains active, releasing new works and performing live across the globe. He released his most recent album At This Time in 2005; this year saw the release of Burt Bacharach: A Life In Song, a live registration.

SATURDAY SIR DUKE STAGE Singer Charlie Wilson originally found fame as the lead singer of the Gap Band, which also featured his brothers Ronnie and Robert. Although the band didn’t retire until 2010, he also started a solo career in the early nineties. And a successful one at that; Wilson has a total of eleven Grammy nominations as well as eight American number one hits to his name. Last year saw the release of his sixth album Forever Charlie, for which he received another Grammy Award nomination for Best R&B album. That same year he also released his memoir, I Am Charlie Wilson, which became a certified bestseller.

FRIDAY SAM COOKE STAGE Singer Chris Brown taught himself to dance and sing from a young age, citing Michael Jackson as his inspiration and performing in the church choir and at local talent shows. Signing his first record contract as a young teenager, he made history when his first single Run It! instantly reached #1 at the Billboard chart. Since then, Brown has become one of the most popular US artists, selling millions of albums worldwide. He has won numerous awards and has also built a successful acting career. Brown released his seventh studio album, Royalty, in 2015. That same year, he also released a collaboration album with rapper Tyga. 10

Since his big breakthrough in 2004 with his album Twentysomething Jamie Cullum has been ever-present on the jazz scene. The British singer and pianist released seven albums to date, of which 2014’s Interlude is the latest. Next to that, he presents his own radioshow on BBC Radio 2, is an arranger as well as a producer and has been involved with several documentaries and films in recent years. All this makes him an authority in the jazz scene and a prominent face in popular music. Successful singles were Everlasting Love, Get Your Way, I’m All Over It, and Don’t Stop The Music, among others. 11

SATURDAY SAM COOKE STAGE J Balvin, real name José Álvaro Osorio Balvin, is a reggaeton singer from Medellín, Colombia. Having been interested in varied styles such as hip hop, dancehall, champeta and bachata during childhood, he began his career at the young age of 17, when he moved to the US to learn English. Over the next ten years he worked in both countries, building his career in the urban scene and among DJs. Last year, he was nominated a staggering thirteen times at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. His best-known songs are Yo Te Lo Dije, Tranquila, Ay Vamos, 6 AM, and Ginza.

This will be the third visit to the festival for audience favorite Juan Luis Guerra. In 2011 and 2014, the Dominican ‘king of merengue’ also attended and gave great performances that are still being talked about today. He alternates merengue and salsa with bachata mixed with Afro pop, jazz, and folk songs. For nearly 30 years, Juan Luis Guerra has been one of the most respected Latin artists in the world. With over 30 million records sold, 15 Latin Grammy Awards, two Latin Billboard Awards, and two Grammys, he still leads the charts.

THURSDAY SAM COOKE STAGE You can find the records of Kassav’ all over the world. In 1979 the band from Guadeloupe, founded by Pierre-Edouard Décimus and Jacob F. Desvarieux, started modernizing the island’s contagious carnival music. What came forth was zouk, a new Afro-Caribbean style, which quickly conquered the world. The group has released twenty albums, always staying true to their own unique style. Based in Paris, they tour the world with their performances that heavily feature colorful costumes, dancers and special effects.

LENNY KRAVITZ
SATURDAY SAM COOKE STAGE Multi-instrumentalist Lenny Kravitz has one leg in rock and the other in soul, but he also grew up with jazz: his father was a jazz promoter and a close friend to many well-known musicians. Kravitz himself found fame with his debut album, 1989’s Let Love Rule. He released his tenth studio album, Strut, in 2014. In recent years Kravitz has been exploring other work projects outside of music: he acted in two The Hunger Games films, designed a collection of furniture and housewares and held his first photo exhibition. Last year he released a concert film, Just Let Go.

FRIDAY SIR DUKE STAGE Who doesn’t know songs like Lessons in Love, Something About You and Running In The Family? They are all by Level 42, the band that became a veritable hit machine in the 1980s. The powerful, lightning-fast bass guitar playing of bandleader and singer Mark King became widely known. The group disbanded in 1994, but the members have been touring the world again since their comeback in 2001. King is still the heart of the band, together with keyboardist and singer Mike Lindup, who returned in 2006 after a long absence. Level 42 released their most recent album Sirens two years ago.

Betty Wright began singing with her family gospel group at age three. By 13 she had released her first record and by 14, her first Top 40 hit with Girls Can’t Do What The Guys Can Do. She received her first gold record for her 18th birthday; by then, she had hit the big time with her smash hit Clean Up Woman and become the queen of the Miami Soul sound. When interest in soul was rekindled at the beginning of the new millennium, Betty Wright was still touring. In 2011 she released the album The Movie in collaboration with hip hop group The Roots. Forty years after her first gold record, the ‘Clean Up Woman’ still effortlessly sweeps the competition off the stage! 19

SATURDAY CELIA STAGE
Michael Bolton is a multi Grammy Award-winning, internationally renowned singer and songwriter who has sold over 60 million records worldwide. In addition, he has won two Grammys for Best Pop Male Vocal Performance (he was nominated four times), six American Music Awards, and holds a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. As a songwriter, he has earned over 24 BMI & ASCAP Awards, including Songwriter of the Year, nine Million-Air awards, and the Hitmakers Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame. To date, Bolton has seen eight studio albums rank in the Top Ten, with nine #1 singles.

SNARKY PUPPY
SATURDAY SIR DUKE STAGE For a long time, this American group was a well-kept secret in underground jazz. But since the release of their 2012 live CD/ DVD GroundUp Snarky Puppy has become one of the most promising groups in instrumental fusion jazz. Based around bassist and bandleader Michael League, the band features a collective of rotating members. Snarky Puppy experiments with many styles, in which raw funk, deep soul and blues are the main ingredients. This year, they received a Grammy Award for their album Sylva with the Dutch Metropole Orkest.

Cuba comes to Curaçao! Especially for the festival, producer Sergio George has formed an extraordinary project to let the audience enjoy the best music Cuba has to offer. It features Aymee Nuviola, the singer and actress also known as ‘La Sonera del Mundo’; timba band Havana D’ Primera, founded by sensational trumpet player Alexander Abreu; Issac Delgado, a popular salsa and timba performer as well as one of the founders of the band NG La Banda; Los Van Van, with no less than four lead singers, is the most recognized post-revolution Cuban musical group, led for many years by bassist Juan Formell.

FRIDAY SAM COOKE STAGE Sir Tom Jones’ career spans more than 50 years and has produced classics like It’s Not Unusual, Delilah, What’s New Pussycat, Kiss and Sex Bomb - the latter stemming from 1999’s Reload, Jones’ biggest selling album to date. Throughout his career, the Welsh singer has never shunned experimenting with different sounds. His last three albums form a trilogy, consisting of Praise & Blame (2010), Spirit In The Room (2012) en Long Lost Suitcase (2015). The latter is the soundtrack to his first ever autobiography, Over The Top And Back. In recent years, Jones was also a coach on The Voice UK.

DAILY FOOD COURT AT THE FESTIVAL Jeon or Jeon Arvani, real name Jonathan Thiel, was born and raised in a tough part of Aruba called Santa Cruz. He escaped his surroundings through music, which he picked up young: his father played the piano and his uncle was a music producer. At age 14, he joined a gaita group in which he played several instruments. He scored his first #1 hit in Aruba with a song he wrote and produced himself. Now a resident of The Netherlands, Jeon combines Aruban cultural music with urban sounds. He has had several hit singles in collaboration with fellow artist Ataniro, among which Bon Vibe, Culpami, and Dushi Bida.

WEDNESDAY 31 AUGUST BRAKKEPUT MEI MEI Being the son of a preacher, Al Jarreau (1940) learned his first singing skills in the church choir. While studying psychology he performed in a singing group and subsequently worked as a community worker. But a singing career beckoned. Jarreau first sang in a band with George Duke, recorded the album We Got By in 1975 and made his breakthrough with Breakin’ Away in 1981, including the colossal hit Roof Garden. He received seven Grammy Awards and was nominated again in 2013 with his album Live, together with the Metropole Orkest. In 2014, he released a tribute to George Duke, who passed away the year before.
