NOTE FROM THE EDITOR

here is something inherently rewarding about reflection. For many, myself included, this can be a highly critical process, as I ponder what I could have done differently in a class lesson to further assist my students in achieving the learning objectives. Although this kind of analysis is critical for growth, it is equally as important to celebrate the wins. To sit back and look at what one has achieved. To revel in the victory. And as I prepare to say farewell to one of the finest collective groups of journalism students I’ve ever had the pleasure of teaching, I believe it is important for them to pause the noise of life to reflect on the greatness they’ve accomplished. This group came to my classroom knowing very little about journalism. During the first week they interviewed each other and presented what they found. It was mostly surface stuff–numbers of brothers and sisters. Maybe a favorite song. But after a few short weeks, they began to refine

their interviewing skills in order to search for the full story. They looked at their first drafts and revamped them into something truly worthwhile. They worked hard. They laughed. They sought to find truth in the world. And over the course of this semester, they all became journalists. Goodbyes are never easy. And to say goodbye to this particular class is extremely difficult, as they were constantly full of life, which was infectious. Every single day I looked forward to our time together. I will truly miss our discussions and interactions. But, the sting of this goodbye is lessened knowing that these student journalists will go off into the world sure that their voices matter and can make a difference. CANCER FREE, HELPING OTHERS BY: MOLLY PETRINA

fter months of hard work and planning, North Royalton student Ryan Kuchta watched as the Cleveland Monsters skated across the ice in jerseys decorated with chocolate chip cookies for National Cookie Day.The fundraising from this event would be sent to A Special WIsh, a local nonprofit wish-granting organization for children diagnosed with life-threatening disorders. It all started when North Royalton student Ryan Kuchta was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma back in November of 2018. Ryan would undergo two years of treatment for his dis6

ease starting from the day after his diagnosis. Although doctors initially hoped to allow Ryan to go home for a week before starting treatment, they worried about his progress and the swollen state of his neck and opted for immediate action. Ryan recalls that “it just got harder from there.” While Ryan began his life-saving journey with treatment, he was also greatly affected by the normal things he could no longer do. Most importantly, Ryan could no longer play hockey with the rest of his team. The break in routine was devastating for Ryan who had been playing hockey from the age of two.

A Special Wish was extremely supportive of Ryan during his time in the hospital. Volunteers would bring Ryan food while he was undergoing treatment and give him activities to try and entertain him during the long days spent in the hospital. Their work with Ryan resulted in three Cleveland Monsters members visiting Ryan in the hospital in 2018. Ryan grew especially close with Monsters goalie Brad Thiessen, who gave him his nickname of ‘Cookie.’ The two hockey goalies still text each other to this day and talk whenever Ryan attends a Monsters game. Ryan was granted his wish from the organization on April 9, 2019, when he signed a one day contract as a player with the Cleveland Monsters. Ryan was invited to Quicken Loans Arena for the day where he got to watch and take part in the team’s pre-game practice before signing his one day contract in the Monsters media room before the press. That night, Ryan watched the game from a spot right next to the team’s bench. Ryan, who is now cancer free, has started his own fundraiser to give back to A Special Wish and help them to grant the wishes of other kids like him. When he told the organization about his idea to do a cookie fundraiser because of his nickname, the nonprofit put Ryan in touch with celebrity chef Michael Symon. The pair began planning the event and developing their recipe six months ago, where they planned to sell cookies and have a special jersey night at a Monsters game. Ryan recalls the time he spent working with Michael Symon as being “pretty cool.” Ryan met up with the chef multiple times at his apartment

in downtown Cleveland to taste test the cookies and make a recipe for the cookies that would be sold at the Monsters game. After tasting lots of cookies, they agreed on the chocolate chip and sea salt recipe for their fundraiser. Ryan also came out with his own line of merchandise that read “Hockey Strong” to show his mindset when battling cancer. The saying comes from a time when his doctor told him he should approach his battle with cancer like a hockey game. Ryan said, “You have to be tough to play hockey so it changed how I thought about cancer.” Overall, Ryan’s work with A Special Wish has aided in their ability to give other kids in his situation cool experiences during hard times like they had with him. Ryan said “it was pretty tough because it showed me what other people and kids have to go through.” Experiencing non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma has given Ryan a different perspective, and he recognizes that the battle against cancer was not something he would have otherwise thought about. He hopes to spread awareness and give back to A Special Wish through his work with the Cleveland Monsters and celebrity chef Michael Symon. Now that Ryan is back to playing hockey and is free of cancer, he feels that he has a different perspective on life after his experience. He said “I’m mostly happy to be back to doing normal stuff and playing hockey with my friends.” Even though his time with the Cleveland Monsters was exciting, Ryan feels that nothing can beat actually playing hockey with his own team, describing it as being his “whole life.”

SHREDDIN' THE SLOPES THIS WINTER

inter is quickly approaching, eager people are awaiting the first good snow, and the slopes are getting ready. Choosing a great snowboarding area can be a tricky decision. Luckily, a wonderful resort southeast of North Royalton is waiting for a great season. Even though we don’t have the mountains of the west, Brandywine is an incredible choice for Ohio. Brandywine is a great place for all ages of snowboarders. Hills can range from having smaller runs for the beginners and younger crowds, to longer and bigger runs for the more advanced or older riders. There are nine hills at Brandywine ranging from the easiest hills, which are ranked green, to the hardest hills, which are ranked black diamond. Starting off, green hills skillswise are the easiest and best place to practice. Next are blue

hills, which give a wide variety of different hills for different skill types. Then black diamonds are the hardest hills in the park, and they are a blast to go down. There is a pretty good selection of hills to go down when the snow is intact and smooth. Some of the longer runs such as Outer Limits and Shredder at Brandywine give such a fun ride. They are sometimes filled with moguls, which are tiny hills or jumps that give it some excitement. These longer runs make it fun to go down with friends or even just taking a relaxing ride by yourself. They give the most time on the hill for all sorts of entertainment, like racing or sledding down on a snowboard. If a harder hill is desired, there are perfect ones at Brandywine. The three biggest and “most difficult” hills at Brandywine are Regulator Johnson, Champagne, and Griz-

zly. These are all ranked black diamonds for a reason. Regulator Johnson is a longer run, which is in between a tree clearing. It gives a great, steeper type of run, which sometimes even has a hill platform in the middle to go down. Champagne is a run that can get you directly into the lodge, so it’s an easy escape route to go warm up inside. It looks easy at the top of the hill, but once the steep drop is seen, it gets serious. Sometimes there are moguls on this hill too, which makes flying down it a real adventure. Grizzly is the last of the three, and it is the steepest hill at Brandywine. Grizzly is approximately a 128-foot drop to the bottom of the hill while snowboarding down. It is extremely fun to fly down as fast as possible, but definitely dangerous. Where’s the fun if it isn’t dangerous, though? Grizzly is a great hill to challenge yourself on. It is more shallow at the top, but once the drop hits, it seems pretty far. Once it is conquered, it feels amazing. The atmosphere of Brandywine is always exceptional. Everyone is friendly, from the snowboarders, to the ski lift workers, to the register workers inside. The ski lift workers will compliment a cool board or gear they see. Sometimes they’ll have music playing and take song requests from anyone. Seeing the same lift worker after every run can sometimes lead to learning their name by the end of the day. They are always aware of their surroundings and are always on top of everything. Everything always feels so welcoming at this resort. The inside workers are always friendly and can spark great conversations and answer any questions. It is such a great place to meet friends and bond over something everyone there loves. Everything is easy to navigate and it is quick to get around to each hill. Everyone loves a nice snowy hill, and Brandywine is always on top of providing that. Brandywine stays on top of the opportunity to make snow whenever they can. Since there was no snow in early December, Brandywine pushed back their opening date from December 18. Despite the lack of early snow, Brandywine does its best to make as much snow as possible when the conditions are proper. They will make snow overnight so the next day conditions can be as best they can be. When the snow machines are on during snowboarding hours, it gives a fun twist. It makes it feel more like an adventure and gives an adrenaline rush. Just don’t forget goggles; the snow will get in the eyes! Along with the snow and great runs, Brandywine has two parks to do many different tricks on. There are different obstacles and equipment for tricks and stunts. There is a smaller training park with less advanced equipment

for those who need some time to build up the skill. There are no big snow ramps, but small box jumps and rails along with other smaller skills. It gives great practice and experience for those who are trying to build up for the real park. The big park at Brandywine consists of huge jumps, rails, boxes, and more. This is a place to try real skills like flips or fancy tricks. These parks are always being trimmed throughout the day so everything can be ready for everyone. All skills are free to be practiced and displayed in these parks. Buying a pass for this resort is highly recommended if snowboarding is a big interest. In the summer preseason, passes are at the lowest prices possible. There are amazing deals on passes which include discounts on food, paid equipment, and any-day snowboarding. Day passes can range from $30-$70 depending on ages or if equipment needs to be rented. Overall, having a pass is something that can be extremely beneficial if snowboarding is a main priority of the winter. Brandywine is an excellent option to snowboard this winter season. They never disappoint with service, slopes, and snowboarding. Nothing is more exciting than hitting the slopes this season, so don’t forget to stop by Brandywine resort for a great snowboard session.

While team goals and players are important, it is also good to have personal goals too. Hitting is a big goal for Michael this season since the prior year he fell under expectation. “Personally, I want to bat a .300 and reach a state championship game,” he said. He was primed his freshman and sophomore year on the JV team and made his first start his junior year. Michael has shown promise for the varsity team and hopes to show off more of that promise. This year, the city’s hopes are high, and Piazza knows the generalized theme of expectation for the Bears this season. “As a team, we would like to win the conference and make it to states,” Piazza said. A great achievement for a great, talented team. High school is full of many things, one of them being regret. Almost every student that has walked the high school’s walls would have at least a few regrets, yet Michael went through his four years without one. In doing so, he holds his high school memories close. “If I had one word to describe high school, it would be memorable. I will never forget the memories I have made here and I am grateful for it all,” he said. While Michael leaves his high school sports behind him, one thing he has learned throughout the process sticks with him every day. “Appreciate those around you and cherish them. Spend time with them each and every day because you never know when it can be your last time doing it.”

CHEERLEADERS OVERCOME BY CHARLEY CARMICHAEL

heer has evolved over the years. In the past, cheer focused primarily on supporting teams with cheers and chants. Today, it’s a sport in its own right. But COVID has made it more challenging. There are some new cheerleaders on the team and COVID has made it tougher to teach everyone the routines and cheers again. Mrs. Saringer, a teacher at NRHS who previously coached the cheer team, said these routines are not simple to learn because cheer has “become more competitive and looked at as a sport and expectations are higher.” Mrs. Saringer did school cheer back in the 90s. They were only allowed to compete in one competition. She said she got into it because she “liked to support sports and go to the games so it gave me the opportunity to do both without actually playing a sport.” COVID adds an additional layer of challenges to an already-difficult sport. Typical issues that cheerleaders usually face involve learning different routines and dance moves. These different challenges can be physical, emotional, mental, etc. Leah Dziedziak, an NRHS cheerleader, said, “Last year I sprained my ankle and had to be out for awhile and get the strength and energy again.” Because cheer is a physical sport, it would be easy to reinjure yourself without proper rest. For cheer, like other sports, they have to have to possess a number of characteristics. Leah said that you have to be “happy and have fun with it.” You also would need to have “dedication, creativity, and agility,” said Mrs. Saringer. There are different types of physical conditioning that cheerleaders have to do for cheer. Mrs. Saringer said that these different ones include, “Endurance because cardiovascular is important, and weightlifting because you need to be strong to tumble and lift others.” Cheerleading also requires a lot of commitment. “It is very time-consuming between practices, all the games, exercises, competitions, tumbling classes, etc,” said Mrs. Saringer. Despite the challenges, people enjoy participating in cheer. Leah said, “I really like it. I’ve made many friends, and it has made me feel more confident.” Mrs. Saringer said, “I love how cheer has evolved into a sport.” It also has different meanings to each person. Mrs. Saringer says that the meaning of cheer to her is the school spirit and teamwork. For Leah, it feels like a second home. THE ROYA L NEWS

After a heartwarming introduction, the first song listeners hear is “Jail.” This song features an appearance from Jay-Z and on the deluxe, features Marilyn Manson and Dababy. This song mainly focuses on Kanye’s sins, as well as the sins of everyone on the planet. Following this is a familiar voice on the album to assist on “God Breathed,” Vory. For the last few years he wrote for chart-breaking artists and contributed to his name as an artist as well. This wouldn’t be Vory’s only appearance on the album, as he assisted vocals in “Off the Grid” and performed on songs “Jonah” and “No Child Left Behind.” Keeping with the theme, Kanye calls out to God for guidance. In “Lord I Need You,” Kanye calls to God to help him find the way to live that he just could not find all this time. He continues this search in “Jesus Lord” and brought Jay Electronica on the journey. In this record, he talks about the need for Jesus and the presence he can have on someone’s life. In Ye’s eyes, “No Child is Left Behind” with Jesus. Staying with the theme, “Heaven and Hell” takes a creative approach, slowly progressing the instrumental as the song continues. After a short pause towards the middle of the song, Ye drops chaos and the “Hell” unleashes. This seems to be Kanye’s way of almost not knowing the difference, or maybe now figuring it out. As a way to story-tell his feelings, the following is the real tribute to his mother. “Donda,” opens with a speech from October 19, 2007, where Donda was being recognized for her years at Chicago State University, talking about the book she wrote, Raising Kanye. During the speech, Kanye’s mother spoke on her son. “What do you want me to talk about? Well, he said something that was a little bit dangerous, he told me I could talk about anything I wanted to, and you know, I am my son’s mother. The man I described in the introduction as being so decidedly different, my son, and what made the project (book) extra special to me is I got a chance to share not only what he has meant to me, but what he has meant to a generation.” As a son, he sang to his mother for the remainder of the song, and once again spoke aloud questioning the “Power of the Kingdom.” Continuing with the spirit of Christianity, Kanye relives his sins, and puts his thoughts out loud on “Believe What I Say.” On the opening verse, it seems

like Ye is going back to his relationship with Kim, and nit-picking the things she said and did. The second verse is almost a hallelujah, as Buju Banton, a Jamaican musician, shares some words of trust and lying, and ends by laughing. “Keep My Spirit Alive,” stays with the theme, and puts a blessing on Ye’s life, as well as his family. Before the album ends, one more song made the cut as a gospel record. “Pure Souls” features a glowing Roddy Ricch and an upbeat Kanye, as they both show their loyalty and proof of making it. Lighting up the spirit, the Sunday Service Choir assisted the Weeknd, Lil Baby, and Kanye West with the highly-anticipated single, “Hurricane.” Lil Baby delivers a lyrical verse reminiscing his past life while taking into account the riches he has earned. The Weeknd, on the other hand, delivered one of the most memorable choruses of the entire album alone. From a catchy Instagram caption to his highpitched notes that hit the speakers perfectly, “Hurricane” is definitely a classic. “Off the Grid” was another song that lit up the album to more than just gospel. Delivering Fivio Foreign’s best verse recorded, a chill, spacey feature from Playboi Carti, and a memorable, hardcore verse from Kanye, was a great addition and ending. While most features took their time to solidify their careers’ further, artists like Don Toliver and Kid Cudi relaxed and took a trip to the “Moon.” On arguably the most memorable song on the record, both Toliver and Cudi delivered soothing, chilling bars that had an eagerness to listen further. “Remote Control” was another more relaxed song while Young Thug also delivered a more laid-back verse that assisted well with the chorus Kanye portrayed. While the album as a whole is incredible, there are a few songs that some believe needed adjustment and maybe should not have been on the album. A few of these include, “New Again,” “Tell the Vision, “24,” and “Ok Ok.” Personally, all of these songs have a place on the album and all have a unique addition to the album as a whole. Yet, there is a good majority of listeners that dislike these songs amongst most, since they seem under-developed, rushed, or just fit a certain niche that the common listener won’t like. Donda is a masterpiece from start to finish. Kanye West has outdone himself by creating the album of the year, and making records I’ll be listening to in my thirties. THE ROYA L NEWS

With vocals straight from 1979, it sounds more like ABBA in their prime than the rest of the album and speaks to the producing abilities of Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, who took a more backseat approach to this album. The new strategy has the B and B in ABBA writing and producing the songs and the women serving solely as the vocalists. Even though they do not have the full range of their 1970’s selves, the two women sing fearlessly throughout the album, which brings a level of enjoyableness despite the odd nature of certain songs. Particularly, “I Could Be That Woman” sets up an interesting premise of a woman watching her distanced significant other spend time with someone else, until you realize that the despicable Tammy persona is his dog. The synthesizers make the other major pop song on the album, “Keep An Eye On Dan,” feel like another beloved symbol of the 1970s. The song also reflects the maturity that ABBA have gained since their breakup, since the song is about parenthood and the struggles of raising a child. The lyrics detail a mother dropping her child off for the weekend, as Agnetha Fältskog sings, “But I said goodbye and I did not cry though my heart ached.” In a major shift in tone, the awkward ballad that follows, “Bumblebee,” is of no real consequence in the scheme of the album as a whole. The imagery provides an ingenuous look at the effects of climate change in a very awkward place position-wise in the track list. It manages to try too hard, while also sounding pointless and lacking spirit. “No Doubt About It” is by far the most unique and ABBA-sounding track on the album. It is my personal favorite, with the strong bridge soaring over the rest of the song and the staccato chorus. It follows the ABBA formula of throwing devastating lyrics over a bright melody to create a confusing and exhilarating experience for the listener. Even as Anni-Frid sings, “I made a mess this time and there’s no doubt about it,” the fast drumbeat

and constant synthesizer dramatize the situation in the most ridiculous way. The forty minute journey ends with the ballad “Ode to Freedom,” a powerful song lyrically with a choir sound that ends the album on their own terms. By saying, “There is no ode to freedom truly worth remembering,” ABBA successfully contradicts themselves as well as their entire career. They want their own ode to freedom to be “not pretentious, but with dignity,” even as they conclude that there is no justifiable ode to freedom. Many critics and fans have compared the ten songs on Voyage to the nineteen immortal sensations on ABBA Gold. However, this is an unfair comparison, as those songs are taken from a discography spanning ten years and eight consecutive number one albums. Voyage is a delicate balance of nostalgia and ingenuity that results in a few stirring numbers as well as a few that fall short. I feel this is only natural for a band returning to the industry with a sound that was perfected fifty years ago and a loyal fan base who would buy tickets to their hologram show no matter what. However, ABBA Gold also proves the lack of risk behind Voyage as a whole. The quiet fading of ABBA’s comeback album in favor of their older beloved successes does nothing to belittle their legacy or their popularity. After listening to Voyage, I think it is a nostalgia boost for the average ABBA fan of albums like Arrival, Voulez Vouz, and Super Trouper. All of the melodic melancholy of The Visitors is lost, as was the spectacle of their last album and their breakup.

verything has a beginning and an end. It’s inevitable, right? Well, maybe not. Scientists have been trying to bring back extinct species. Their most recent project being the Woolly Mammoth, which has been extinct for more than 10,000 years. It was announced that a company has raised $15 million to bring back this species. As cool and futuristic as this sounds, some can’t help but wonder how producing unnatural animals affects the world as we know it? Senior, Ceterra Cozmyk said, “No, I don’t think they should be doing that. I believe it would just cause more problems.” Another student, junior Andrew Ferenchek disagreed. He said, “Yeah, it’s the animals’ turn to have the world at this point.” However, some still aren’t fond of the idea. Senior Molly Conroy said, “Absolutely not. There have been five movies on why they should not resurrect extinct animals. Maybe, if they have substantial proof that they will benefit the ecosystem greatly, then it should be considered. Otherwise, no.”

Although, it would be cool. What’s the point of resurrecting extinct animals? Are there any benefits to it? Well, scientists have said that it will be beneficial to the environment, and genetic engineering. Also, being able to thoroughly study these extinct species can offer important scientific knowledge. There are disadvantages too though. These resurrected animals may be at risk of exploitation by greedy people, resulting in them losing their lives. Another thing is that our climate is different from what it was thousands of years ago when these animals roamed the Earth. They might not be able to adapt well to that. Lastly, bringing back long-dead species and putting them in the ecosystem could harm the already living animals. People have said the whole thing really is interesting, and it’s incredible that technology has advanced so far. However, it is scary and maybe it’s not the best thing to be messing with nature. Especially, with all the movies that have come out showing exactly what happens when people do.

he new hit Netflix series Masters of the Universe: Revelation by Kevin Smith has come to be the direct modern sequel of the 1983 He-man and the Masters of the Universe. The new series was released in July of this year. The show focuses mostly on Teela, one of He-man’s good friends, and the “adopted” daughter of Duncan. The show features everyone's fan favorite characters from the original hit series, including He-man, Orko, Cringer, and ManAt-Arms. In this show, the main characters, like Teela, Adam, who is best known as He-man, Cringer, and Evil-Lyn, have a completely new look. This new series is rated PG so it’s a very kid friendly show. During the series Teela tries to go find the two swords that make up the sword of power and put the sword back together while racing against time to not let the universe be destroyed. During her journey she will finally unlock the mysteries of Grayskull.

First of all, the new Masters of the Universe has a cool new look that makes it more modern for kids who never have seen the original or were born after 2010, but it doesn’t compare to the old look of the 1983 series. The show also adds some characters that probably were not in the original. Next, as the new series introduced Heman and Skeletor, they, “spoiler-alert,” killed them off the show too early. Although he is killed off, Heman’s new look is not too much of a change and is pretty much the same but they have made him more muscular. The show also has some different looks for Teela, Man-At-Arms, and Evil-Lyn. Overall it’s still an entertaining show and is recommended for a new set of eyes. For a viewer looking for new adventures with familiar characters, this series might disappoint.
