More than ever before, in this crazy time we are living through, I am reminded that our greatest wealth in life is not necessarily what we own or possess but the experiences we have and the memories we create. As the French say rather bluntly, “A dead man’s shirt has no pockets.”
Perhaps it’s my age, but these days, it crosses my mind almost daily that having these experiences is what I should personally focus my energy on. That’s not to say that material things can’t sometimes also help you have those experiences and make those memories. For example, having a yacht on which to spend time with your family would certainly help create a great environment, and a focal point or hub around which your family can coalesce once or twice a year. The point being, it creates those moments that you can actually look back on at the end of any given year, and that make you smile in the remembering.
And so it is that I have chosen to embrace my life fully. That doesn’t mean that I think we should all vie for the next seat on Blue Origin. But how fortunate I am, we are, to be in the position to create such memories. To be able to travel is one of life’s greatest privileges, as is time spent with family and friends. So I implore you to set some time aside from your work and your business, to embrace your own personal life fully, and perhaps to take to the high seas and create your own cherished memories. After all, there’s no time like the present, and we’re here to make it happen for you. That is, of course, when we’re not making our own memories!

Northrop & Johnson discusses the yachting trends making waves
Traditionally male-dominated, the yachting industry is progressing as more and more women take on leadership roles. Navigator talks to the women shaping the future of yachting and the evolving perceptions within the industry.
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
Rose Damen
Managing Director
Damen Yachting Challenging long-standing gender norms in shipyard leadership roles, Rose Damen has been at the helm of the Damen Yachting Group for almost a decade.
Ann Avery Yacht Broker
Northrop & Johnson
Ann Avery has been a yacht broker for three decades. Prior to this she spent eight years at sea as one of only three professional female captains in the Caribbean.
Tracy Edwards MBE Sailor
Tracy Edwards is a pioneering British sailor renowned for her achievements in the world of sailing. Today, Tracy champions girls’ education through The Maiden Factor Foundation.
Rochelle Stebbing
Second Officer ALFA NERO
Rochelle Stebbing has worked her way up from deckhand to her current position on board the iconic ALFA NERO.
Traditional roles for women in yachting have been shoreside, supportive positions. How did you break into your leadership field?
Rose My entire life has involved ship or yacht building. As a child, I was often with my father at the Damen shipyard, going to see boats with him and even traveling to visit clients. I accompanied my father on a trip around the world and from then on, I knew that the ocean and boats would be a part of my future. That said, I also recognized that I needed to develop my experience beyond our family business, to bring my own expertise to the table. I was internationally active in the financial world for a number of years and after completing an MBA course, I made the choice to join the family business. My financial business acumen and experience paid off and the rest is history, as they say.
Ann I left my academic life to embark on a year-long family adventure, sailing around the Caribbean. During our travels I read Androgyny by June Singer. Singer purported that no matter what body a person is in – male or female – to succeed one would have to know how to navigate or “be” both genders. As one of a family of five girls, I thought it would be good for me to captain professionally to really understand responsibility. I went on to captain sailboats professionally for about eight years, then became a broker, helping others live a glorious life on the water.
Rochelle I was working in the restaurant trade when I met some “yachties” who suggested I give yachting a try, so I quit my job and took my STCW. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to work on deck, but my course instructor advised I aim for deck/ stew instead. I took no notice and flew to Fort Lauderdale and dockwalked. My first job was a day job, washing down the boat. I gained experience working in various deckhand positions before gaining my Yachtmaster qualification. I have worked my way up on various yachts to my current position on board ALFA NERO as Second Officer.
What do you think has caused the growing recognition of women’s capabilities and contributions?
Rose For me, it has always been about diversity in all forms and creating opportunities. At Damen Yachting, we believe in the strength and potential of women to drive change and innovation, and sometimes opportunities need to be created for this to take place. In 2019, we launched Women in Yachting, a community that brings together women who are not just working in the industry, but are leading it, inspiring others, and fostering a more inclusive environment.
Tracy When it comes to the sailing community, it is simply down to the hard work and dedication of the female contingent involved in this sector.
Ann Women have brought a much-needed feminine perspective to the heavily-weighted male-dominated/competitive paradigm that many of us were brought up with. Women have a natural ability to relate to others, being empathetic while still attending to the bottom line.
Rochelle I think we have had to work hard to prove we are capable, but our skills are undeniable. I have been lucky to work with Captains and crew who recognize my skills, work ethic, and contributions instead of my gender.
What challenges have you had to overcome?
Rose In recent years, Damen Yachting has grown significantly, both in terms of the number of employees and in the diversity of the portfolio, with record numbers of deliveries, new models, and yacht types. Such rapid growth comes with its own challenges that are not always easy to navigate, especially when you are in an industry that can sometimes be averse to too much change. Adopting new ways of working takes time. However, I am proud to say that by becoming more creative and flexible, we have managed the process with great success.
Tracy I have spent 40 years looking for funding for various female sailing programs and it never gets easier.
Ann Throughout my career I have come across people who dismissed me because I was female. I understood the naysayers, whose only context was the past. I looked for people with imagination, who were willing to take a chance on me. There were so few women in the field at that time; men were my main collaborators and teachers.
Rochelle Proving my strength as a member of the deck department has been one of the greatest challenges I have faced in yachting. I worked hard and became stronger –both mentally and physically. I have had to work harder, faster, and smarter to even be seen or considered.
What are the obstacles that still stand in your way?
Rose Everyone in this industry, be they male or female, faces obstacles. It’s part of business. Whether it’s finding ways to embrace new technologies, dealing with an unpredictable market, or ensuring the company is always doing its bit to protect our ocean, there are always challenges. I have always promised myself to stay true to my own values and business vision that aligns with the family business. As a female managing director, however, there is the added challenge of balancing workload and the responsibility of the shipyard with motherhood. Of course, everybody faces this challenge if they have a family, but being a mother can make this more complex. It requires sacrifice and you need to be OK with that.
Ann I still feel there is gender bias and women are dismissed, not only by men, but also by some women. We need to work cohesively. As they say, “You can’t be your best self by yourself.”
Rochelle Despite bringing my experience, skills and knowledge to the table, I do think my age and gender is seen as a negative when up against a younger, less experienced candidate.
“For me, it has always been about diversity in all forms and creating opportunities.”
Rose Damen Managing Director, Damen Yachting
What would you change about the industry?
Rose I have always been an advocate for inclusivity and I want our industry to remain one that inspires others. Personally, I often ask myself what we would need to change to ensure that my young daughters will still find inspiration in this industry 20 years from nowIt’s a hard one to answer, but I hope it remains an industry that enables each person involved, whatever their position, to reach their true potential. And for that we need inclusivity, diversity and inspiration.
Ann I agree. I would also like to see the industry really engage and commit to transforming our world. I would like to see more reverence for our oceans and the creatures who live there.
Rochelle Loyalty. It seems that in this industry, everyone is dispensable no matter what you have done or what you bring with you. Support of crew when it comes to mental health; crew work extremely long hours away from the social norms and need to have people they can depend on. Crew should be one of, if not the most, important considerations when owning a yacht, because without them you have nothing.
What would your advice be to a younger version of yourself looking to start out in the yachting industry?
Rose Do not hide yourself and trust your inner voice. Surround yourself with people who genuinely support you and your goal. I would give her the same advice my father gave me: stay sharp, see where the market is heading, and focus on what you are good at.
Tracy To cut your losses sooner rather than later. To focus on quality, not quantity.
Ann To pay attention to intuition and gut feelings, and to navigate with the heart.
Rochelle Go for it! Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t; find the people that tell you that you can. Work hard, learn more, expand your skills, make yourself a candidate that sticks out. When you meet a challenge, grab it and learn; don’t give up, change your strategy if you need. Get a thick skin and don’t take anything personally, use it to get better and succeed.
Who has been the most influential woman in your life?
Rose The head of our family, my mother, Josien Damen. She has been a great example to me and still is.
Tracy The most influential women in my life were my awesome mother and my indomitable grandmother. I come from a long line of strong women, and I am so grateful to them for instilling in me a positive, “can do” attitude. I also owe HM King Hussein I an immeasurable debt of gratitude. His encouragement and support changed my life and I will be indebted to him all my life.
Ann Aside from my own mother, Kaj Wyn Berry was the most influential. I met the Berry family on their sailing boat and spent six months learning to sail with them. Kaj Wyn had a pilot’s license when she was 17, was an award-winning Life Magazine photographer, a journalist, and master calligrapher. Her combination of being successful in a man’s world, a creative, intelligent woman, and a very feminine adventurer to boot, was inspiring.
Rochelle My mother. She was the one who pushed me to be better and told me that anything I put my mind to I will succeed. We were never given the opportunity to give up and I am very grateful for that.
Finally, what’s next?
Rose There is still plenty to achieve at Damen Yachting and I continually work to develop myself, my leadership skills, and our family business. I want to leave a legacy that I am proud of and this includes securing a future business and making a positive contribution to the industry.
Tracy Raising funds to keep MAIDEN moving.
Ann Coaching and workshops with women to help them be the best version of themselves as we break the long-standing cultural barriers within us.
Rochelle I would like to get my Master 3000 and be a Captain again on a bigger yacht for a few years. After that I will have to find a new challenge, but maybe with a social life.
“Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t; find the people that tell you that you can.”
Rochelle Stebbing Second Officer ALFA NERO
Preserve the joy of your home with planning insights from Northern Trust
Whether your vacation home is a refuge, a peaceful retreat, or the venue for shared experiences and memories with loved ones, it is essential that you protect your treasured asset for generations to come. Prepare yourself, your estate, and your family for the future by considering these questions:
How will future generations use the property?
You have thought – perhaps even dreamed –about how the children and grandchildren who have enjoyed the property will use it in the future, but have you shared your vision of the future with them? Create a safe place for this sometimesdifficult conversation. Spouses, children, and grandchildren frequently have preferences they may have kept private for fear of disappointing you. Be open to their viewpoints. Talk before making any long-term plans. Learn what concerns or worries they may have about sharing and maintaining the property in the future. An open and candid conversation can strengthen the foundation for ongoing family harmony by airing and addressing concerns and providing clarity around issues in planning for the future of the property.
What is the right disposition for the property?
There are two options for the future: sell the home or transfer it to the next generation, directly or via a trust, limited liability company, or other ownership structure. It is helpful to think through a few key considerations before making a commitment. Begin by reviewing how the title to the property is currently held, and then explore your options for transferring ownership.
• How will the property be owned and controlled?
• When should a sale or transfer occur?
• How will the property be maintained and used until its sale or transfer?
While it may seem simplest to leave a vacation home to a child or children in your will, this choice can introduce real-life complexity. For example, a direct transfer affords no structure or dedicated funding for the future management and upkeep of the property. A transfer to a qualified personal residence trust (QPRT) or sale to a long-term intentionally defective grantor trust (IDGT) are potentially attractive strategies to consider, since a lifetime transfer leverages your available gift tax exclusion. Transferring the
home to a revocable or irrevocable trust or limited liability company are other viable alternatives to be considered in consultation with your advisor. Work with your legal and tax advisors to plan the selection of trustees and managers, the timing of the transfer, opportunities for minimizing taxes, options for continuing use and maintenance, the funding of expenses, and to understand exit and modification strategies to accommodate changing circumstances throughout the property’s lifespan.
The allure of a foreign vacation home is easy to understand; planning for its ownership is often not. Unique and sometimes complicated tax and wealth-transfer issues arise from owning a second home abroad. Consider these tax and wealth transfer issues as you contemplate or plan for an international home.
• Review gift and tax treaties between your home country and the jurisdiction of your property. They may affect how you plan for taxes and structure the property within your estate.
The U.S., for example, has such agreements with 15 countries.
• Work with your advisors to assess the tax laws imposed by national and local authorities in the country where you own your vacation home.
• Work with your advisors to determine whether you need a foreign wealth transfer plan. If so, your advisors may recommend that you consult with tax and legal experts in the country where your vacation home is located.
Whether family ownership of your vacation home is intended to last for generations to come or for just a few more years, having a well-conceived plan leaves more time for what matters most –enjoyment of the home and the creation of the memories you will cherish and share, regardless of how your circumstances change over time.

Having officially launched at the 2024 Monaco Yacht Show, GX Superyachts has set its sights on the American market. Representing the company in its stateside venture, Northrop & Johnson is delighted to be marketing the new superyacht lineup in the Americas. “We believe that the biggest challenges lie ahead of us, with an urgent need to foster environmental and social sustainability,” says Northrop & Johnson President and CCO, Cromwell Littlejohn. “We are therefore delighted to be working with GX Superyachts, whose stance on responsible yachting backed with green technology is a beacon for the industry.” GX Superyachts may be a new name in the industry, but the brand has decades of experience behind its name, benefitting from the expertise of its sister company, Greenline Yachts, a pioneer in hybrid yachts up to 58’ (18m). The American market has long appreciated the user-friendly features of Greenline Yachts, and it now has the opportunity to take its yachting adventure one step further with GX Superyachts.

The Award-Winning SANTOSHA from Heesen Yachts Navigator steps on board the award-winning 187’ (57m) SANTOSHA to look inside this remarkable Heesen yacht. Featuring Heesen’s trademark Fast Displacement Hull Form, SANTOSHA is a first of many – the first in the new 57m Aluminum Class from Heesen Yachts, and the first yacht for her new owners, who were introduced to the project in 2023 by Northrop & Johnson’s Wes Sanford. “It’s a strange world when your entry-level yacht is nearly 200 feet,” says Wes. “But having spent two decades chartering, they knew what they wanted.” The owners were attracted to the design’s striking exterior lines, which were penned by Frank Laupman, while the shallow draft worked perfectly for their preferred cruising grounds of The Bahamas. Coming into the project with only 18 months to go, however, allowed them to make their mark on the interior design and layout. “They both knew how they wanted things to look and feel,” says Wes. “They wanted the yacht to be an extension of their home with an interior design that is both bright and airy while at the same time calm and soothing.” This involved more than a simple change to the color scheme. “We were able to change the design of the beach club area to incorporate a gym, while the owners’ cabin saw some significant alterations in terms of the layout,” says Wes. Taking delivery of SANTOSHA in October 2024, her maiden voyage was a Transatlantic crossing, after which the owners enjoyed her in their inaugural season in Florida and The Bahamas. SANTOSHA will cross the Atlantic again for a full season in the Mediterranean this summer.

While many of the world’s best-known regattas have already sailed by the end of spring, the summer into early fall still offers plenty of thrills and lively waterborne events. Here is a trio of lesser-known sailing happenings that guarantee not only an unmatched level of competition, but also a joyful, celebratory atmosphere.

Newport, Rhode Island
July 12-13, 2025
Arguably, there may not be acity in the United States that is more closely associated with serious sailing than understated Newport, Rhode Island. But what started as an in-the-know regional summer regatta in 1984 has grown into a still-locally-flavored, authentic competition, gaining more and more global attention. The sailing purity of gathering 14 or so One Design classes for four-circle racing cannot be denied, and the Newport Regatta has a reputation for staging many, many races with precious little spectator downtime. If you want to witness some fast-andfurious competition, Newport is just the ticket for you. While the racing may be all-business, summer in the town of Newport is notoriously all-fun. The Gilded Age aura of the town’s history as a getaway for the New York and global elite is still in full effect, but Newport now attracts visitors of all stripes with unmatched dining, cultural, and nightlife options. sailnewport.org

Richard Mille
Richard Mille x Ferrari
Watch world observers were recently knocked out by the dynamics of the sophomore timepiece product from the innovative partnership of artful watchmaker Richard Mille and Italian automotive legend Ferrari. The first collaborative timepiece was an unexpected cuff-like wristwatch in 2020. Announced this spring, however, the new Richard Mille RM 43-01 Tourbillon Split Seconds Chronograph Ferrari is an obvious – and gorgeous – experiment to better synchronize the design DNA of both brands together. On the Mille side, the piece has the expected tonneau-shaped case, deep movement visibility, and dynamic track-ready color use. On the Ferrari side, it features a rare “rattrapante” split-seconds chronograph (perfect for timing a race) and aggressive styling. Nearly every shape on the watch – from the watch strap slope, to the movement shape, to the chronograph pushers – can draw a line directly back to Ferrari automotive design details. The new timepiece is available in both shimmering titanium and edgy carbon executions. richardmille.com
Girard-Perregaux
Girard-Perregaux x Aston Martin
Since the esteemed Swiss watchmaker and British performance car company started teaming up on collaborative timepieces in 2021, we have seen several stunning offerings that tended to push technology. But in the latest collaboration – the new Laureato Chronograph Aston Martin Edition – the vibe seems to harken back to more of a mid-century coolness. An elaborate, new-jack multilayered green dial color (rendered from layer after layer of actual Aston Martin auto paint), as well as the use of state-of-the-art Grade 5 titanium construction might ring in the new. But, a classic 42mm case size, three-subdial chronograph function, and beefy link bracelet would seem perfectly at home on the wrist of a certain vodka-martinisipping Aston Martin driver of yore. girard-perregaux.com
IWC x Mercedes-AMG Petronas
The mouthful model name of watchmaker IWC’s latest collaboration with Mercedes-Benz’s F1 Petronas racing team, the “IWC Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team,” may tackle the tongue, but you only need to take two big things away from the ungainly moniker: the name both honors the team’s CEO (Wolff) and nods to some extreme technical advancements in timepiece stability (Shock Absorber XPL) that it carries. The 44mm Ceratanium (ceramic/titanium hybrid) construction picks up the turquoisegreen livery of the racing team. A cutting-edge metallic-glass spring that protects the watch movement against extreme G forces – technology that also bears Wolff’s name – is also rendered in unmistakable green, in this case, glowing Super-LumiNova. Limited to 100 pieces. iwc.com
Nonstop flights are the third biggest reason flyers choose private aviation over scheduled airlines, according to research by Private Jet Card Comparisons (door-to-door time savings and more convenient airports were first and second). However, determining how far you can fly without refueling on specific private jet types is not as simple as it seems.
That’s because the maximum range numbers shown are often overstated compared to what you will experience in real life; they were achieved under optimal conditions and usually with a minimal payload – as little weight as possible. In other words, there weren’t skis or scuba gear along for the ride, and the record-setting flights used optimal departure airports, departure times, etc. Temperature, elevation, runway length, cruising speed, and flight plan can all impact whether or not you need to stop.
The point is that while stories like this make for interesting reading before you buy a private jet – or a share in one – make sure it can do your most common flights without fuel stops. While they may seem quaint, they can lead to delays such as waiting for other airplanes to be refueled, weather, and so forth.
Former Jet Edge CEO Bill Papariella, who now heads Aero Ventures, a private aviation advisory that provides bridge financing, relays a story about a former customer from his private jet airline who was buying a large cabin jet to fly between his home in Texas and Europe. He told Papariella about the aircraft he was about to buy based on the OEM’s published specifications. Papariella had to let him know the $50 million-plus jet would need a fuel stop on the westbound flights. His acquaintance shelled out an extra $10 million for a type that could fly nonstop.
Starting small and working our way up, we begin with Embraer’s top-selling Phenom 300E (successor to the 300), which has a nonstop range of 2,313 miles with five occupants and reserves to reach an alternate airport within 100 miles of your destination. Textron Aviation’s Citation CJ4 Gen 3 can fly 2,224 miles nonstop on the same basis. Keep in mind the five occupants include two pilots. With eight passengers and two pilots, the nonstop range is 1,752 miles, per Textron Aviation. At the same time, operator executives will tell you neither is guaranteed to make it nonstop from New York to Aspen fully loaded, going against the headwinds during the winter.
NetJets, Flexjet, and Airshare each offer the Phenom 300 in their fractional programs. All three, as well as Nicholas Air and Magellan Jets, offer the Phenom 300 in their jet card programs. Jet OUT offers a co-ownership plan on the CJ4.
This brings up another point. What’s the most convenient airport for your trip, and are you bringing oversized luggage? The Pilatus PC-24 has a range of 2,347 miles with four
passengers and two pilots. However, its cargo door that spans more than four feet wide by four feet high and its ability to take off from short fields and land on dirt runways could make it a fit. PlaneSense in the U.S. and Jetfly in Europe offer fractional ownership in the Swiss-made light jet.
Looking toward your globe-trotting needs, Gulfstream, Bombardier, and Dassault are battling it out with luxury that goes the distance. After the last Gulfstream G650ER rolled off the assembly line in Savannah, Georgia, earlier this year, the icon of long-range jets is now onto the G700. Its newest jet has a maximum range of 8,918 miles, enough to make it nonstop from Singapore to Los Angeles. Corporate Jet Investor reports the G800 will add about 300 miles in range when it comes into service. For the time being, Qatar Executive offers the G650ER and G700 for on-demand charter flights, while Flexjet features the G650 in its fractional ownership program.
Bombardier’s Global 8000 expects a nonstop capability of over 9,000 miles. The Canadian OEM forecasts nonstop flights from London to Perth and Houston to Dubai. Its smooth Flex Wing and GE Passport engines also promise long flights from short-runway airports. It’s expected to enter service later this year, according to Aviation International News. Global 7500 owners will be able to retrofit their jets, a process that takes about 10 days. The Global 7500 and, in the future, Global 8000, will be the flagships for NetJets, the largest private jet operator in the world. It sells fractional shares on the ultra-long-range jets while rival VistaJet offers its version of the jet card on its fleet of Global 7500s. Either way, think nonstop flights over 15 hours.
From France, Dassault and Airbus are both elevating their range and comfort. Dassault expects its Falcon 10X to have a nonstop range of 8,630 miles when it enters service in 2027. It will boast the biggest cabin space of any dedicated private jet, with a cabin height of 6’8” and a width of 9’1”. The owner’s suite will have space for a full queen bed, a shower, and 38 windows to let the light in.
Finally, the ACJ TwoTwenty from Airbus is a private jet version of the popular A220. Like Boeing, you can create your own private jet from any of their commercial jet airframes, including the ultra-long-range A350s and 787s.
However, let’s end where we started. Please don’t do it alone. Corporate Jet Investor lists 40 steps to buying your own private jet.

2025 Land Rover Range Rover EV Rumors
There is something about a full-size Range Rover that is just plain tough in its own elevated right. Driving a full-size Range Rover gives you a feeling that you could put it through the wall of a 14th-century cathedral, dust off the hood, and continue on your merry way. The much-anticipated 800-volt architecture Range Rover EV vehicle was announced in 2023, and the company has taken over 50,000 pre-orders for it to date. While details may still be a bit thin on the ground, it is confirmed for availability this year, and with an identical appearance to the existing long wheelbase gas-powered Range Rover. landrover.com
The sheer comfort and over-the-top luxury amenities of the best SUVs on the market may tend to fly in the face of the contemplation of serious mobile adventures in them. However, this trio of vehicles, while undeniably elegant, are also purpose-built for a level of toughness that balances nicely with their obvious pizzazz.

Rolls-Royce Cullinan Series II
The burgeoning all-wheel-drive beast got an overall refresh last year and is now dubbed the “Series II” by the Goodwood automaker. While the updated fascia and painstaking interior refinements and technology may speak to a certain sophisticated urban appeal, with the right mix of bespoke options, the new Cullinan Series II can be as adventure-ready as you like. The twin-turbo 6.8-liter V-12 power plant with signature “wafting” Magic Carpet Ride suspension technology remains as the eternal heart of the Cullinan. But certainly, easy, quiet, sure-footed handling can come in equally handy on the pavement and even when you veer a little bit off it. Try out this scenario, if you will: a luxurious hill-climb to the top of a moor at dusk, with an intimate sun-downer moment seated on the Cullinan’s rear gate-deployable “picnic” seating option. 2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe For many, the formula of “adventure” plus “luxury” equals “Jeep.” And that’s where the equation ends. At the top end of the Jeep lineup, the Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrid, which first bowed in 2023, is another alternative-powered SUV that delivers the same adventureready performance and luxury of its traditionally powered siblings. A checklist for the 2025 model: The legendary Jeep Quadra-Trac II 4x4 System with low-range off-road performance? Check. The system can throw 100 percent of available torque to a single wheel in a pinch. Abundant water protection? For a partially battery-powered vehicle, you bet. Tight as a drum. All this rugged opportunity (including 6,000 pounds of towing capacity) comes in a 56 mpg, 25-mile all-electric range SUV with style and sophistication. jeep.com

Ten reasons why the Maltese archipelago should be your next Mediterranean port-of-call
Blessed with natural harbors and a strategic Mediterranean locale, it is no surprise that the Maltese archipelago has been attracting seafarers for centuries. Navigator takes a look at the Top 10 reasons Malta, and her sister islands of Gozo and Comino, should be your next port-of-call.
1. With more than 300 days of sunshine, Malta is a year-round destination, with a climate suited to a wide range of outdoor activities.
2. With 180 miles of coastline, the islands of Malta, Gozo, and Comino are home to stunning beaches and secluded coves lapped by crystal-clear waters.
3. The islands of Malta are renowned for vibrant marine life and numerous shipwrecks, making it an ideal destination for snorkeling and scuba diving. The calm waters are suitable and exhilarating for both beginners and experienced divers.
4. Malta’s layered history offers a rich cultural experience. From the prehistoric Ggantija Temples on Gozo to the Hagar Qim and Mnajdra Temples on Malta, some date back over seven millennia.
5. Step ashore to the dynamic capital of Valletta. Built by the Knights of St. John, the whole city is an “open-air museum” featuring Baroque architecture, St. John’s Co-Cathedral, and the Grandmaster’s Palace.
6. Malta offers a vibrant lifestyle, with high-end restaurants and bars offering the perfect venues ashore. Malta has become a gastronomy hub, with six Michelin star and one Michelin two-star restaurants, as well as wonderful street food, including the Pastizzi and ftira (local bread).
7. Valletta’s deep natural harbor, extensive superyacht refit and repair facilities, and fantastic infrastructure, make Malta an ideal gateway to some of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruising grounds.
8. Smaller and quieter than Malta, Gozo is steeped in myth. The island is thought to be the legendary Calypso's Isle of Homer's Odyssey – a peaceful, mystical backwater where Baroque churches and old stone farmhouses dot the countryside.
9. The beautiful sister island of Comino, with its famed Blue Lagoon, boasts clear azure waters, while hidden coves provide the perfect anchorage spots.
10. Finally, Malta hosts many international events, including one of the most scenic sailing events in the Mediterranean – the Rolex Middle Sea Race, October 18.
Combine Malta’s unique history with the beaches and secret coves on Gozo and Comino, and you have the perfect yachting destination. For more information visit visitmalta.com

As September and October become the new July and August, Navigator takes a look at late summer’s coolest hot spots and the yachts to take you there
WORDS MIRIAM CAIN
For decades, the most popular summer cruising grounds have been those offering warm temperatures and clear blue skies. But, with several Mediterranean destinations seeing blisteringly hot temperatures in recent summers, the shoulder season months have seen a rise in demand for yacht charters, while the demand for cooler summer vacations without the heat or crowds has cruising grounds such as Norway or Antarctica surging in popularity. For those tempted by the allure of a late summer charter, the Eastern Mediterranean has plenty to offer, not only in terms of idyllic anchorages and crystal-clear waters, but in historical splendor and culture as well. Alternatively, the shallow waters of the sun-drenched Bahamas offer amazing beaches and water sports opportunities year-round, while New England’s coastline is like a dot-to-dot map of cultural highlights, with gorgeous scenery and charm in abundance. Wherever you choose to charter, you can expect less crowded anchorages and low-season rates – for now, that is.
As the summer season winds down in the West Mediterranean, late summer offers a perfect opportunity to enjoy a yacht charter in the beautiful Greek islands. Unlike the scorching heat of July and August, September offers those coveted “just right” temperatures, which hover around 77°F in the daytime with balmy evenings for alfresco dining. Even better, the Aegean Sea reaps the rewards from the summer heat and is at its warmest in September, when the Meltemi winds have subsided. The last few years have also seen resorts, beach clubs, and restaurants keep their doors open well into the fall to meet increased demand from visitors, and, without the crowds, the atmosphere is more laid back.
From the crystal-clear waters of the Cyclades to the impossibly blue seas of the Ionian, the Gods chose Greece for a reason. The twin islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca in the Ionian Sea epitomize authentic Greece. Visit the stunning stalactites in the Drogarati Cave while cruising Kefalonia, or learn about Odysseus’ homeland with a stroll around the harbor town of Vathy on the pint-sized Ithaca. Discover the archaeological wonder of Olympia (home of the ancient Olympic games) while cruising the Peloponnese, or, while circling the Cyclades, take the opportunity to visit stunning Santorini without the crowds.
With more than 1,400 islands and 3,600 miles of coastline, the Dalmatian region was seemingly made for the waterborne, and as such has become one of the more popular summer cruising grounds in the Eastern Mediterranean. With such an incredibly varied array of coastal landscapes, Croatia has something to suit every type of yacht charter. Whether you want beach clubs for parties, cocktail bars and restaurants for evening adventure, or remote anchorages and Tolkienesque landscapes, not to mention history and culture, rest assured that a late season charter will not disappoint.
There are plenty of hidden coves and beautiful beaches that remain quiet even during the peak season, however, the historical sites ashore can be overcrowded during the height of summer. Soak up everything Croatia has to offer as the crowds ebb away, the summer heat turns down, and the sea is at its warmest, stepping ashore to discover no less than ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with fifteen more on the tentative list. The old town of Dubrovnik is one of these UNESCO sites, its fortifications, vaults, towers, and slave quarters playing host to bustling cafés and restaurants that welcome visitors year-round. Over on the main islands, glamorous beach clubs carry on attracting the superyacht set to partake in the lively atmosphere until early October, while the water remains warm enough to enjoy all manner of water sports. The popular Hvar is home to the famous Carpe Diem Beach club, while the main town is built around a Baroque-style harbor lined with restaurants. One of the largest islands in the archipelago, Brač, is best known for its picturesque villages built from local stone, and further toward Italy, the island of Vis bears easy comparison to the Italian island of Capri, complete with its own blue grotto.

The 96’ (29.5m) VIVALDI is heading to the East Mediterranean this summer. Available for 10 guests for prices from €80,000, plus expenses, per week.
With new water toys, including a chase tender, jet skis, and Seabobs, the 116’ (35.36m) NOROADER is the perfect yacht for enjoying the warm waters of the Adriatic. Sleeping 10 guests for prices from €140,000 per week, plus expenses, she is available in the East Mediterranean throughout the long summer season.

11 One of the quieter islands in Dalmatia, Vis is a perfect hideaway for the waterborne
12 The 116’ (35.36m) NOROADER is the ideal yacht for charters in the East Mediterranean throughout the long summer
Identifying “coolcationing” as a new trend, a number of the fleet are eschewing traditional sunny destinations for those with lower temperatures. Northern Europe has seen a rise in the number of yachts available for charter throughout the summer season, with the Norwegian fjords being the most popular Baltic cruising grounds from early May until late August. Springtime sees the snowline retreat to the mountaintops, leaving a landscape of waterfalls and streams that flow into the magnificent fjords. From mid-June to mid-July, the near continuous daylight illuminates the untrammeled landscape, with meadows and forests coming to life. Although it may not be the place to head if sunbathing is your focus – the climate and weather are very much influenced by Atlantic weather disturbances – the best place to be is on deck to view the wildlife and witness the sheer scale of the glittering fjords.
From the southern fjords to the Lofoten Islands in the north, the land of the midnight sun makes for an awe-inspiring “coolcation” cruising ground. The most popular itinerary through the Norwegian fjords begins in the city of Bergen, through the famed Hardangerfjord to the south and on to Stavanger, or north to Sognefjord and on to the Lofoten Islands. They may be part of the Arctic Circle, but due to the warm Gulf Stream, the climate is milder than other parts of the world on the same latitude.

Rather than making their annual spring Atlantic crossing to the Mediterranean, a number of the charter fleet are staying Stateside and spending their summer in New England. Fondly considered to be America’s historic home of yachting, this quintessential cruising ground beauty has long been associated with glamorous figures like John F. Kennedy and J.D. Rockefeller, who spent their summers sailing here. Offering something for everyone, including culture and stunning scenery, the yachting season continues well into the fall, when the vibrant foliage begins to change its colors and the still warm waters host playful seals and migrating whales nursing their calves.
Where to charter
New England’s coastline is a veritable mecca of cultural highlights. From the Newport Mansions on the mainland to the wild beaches and old-school glamor of Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket, New England has been a summer getaway of choice for politicians and celebrities for over a century. With so much packed into its 26-by-nine-mile surface area, you could spend quite a few days cruising around Martha’s Vineyard. Boasting a rich history and a burgeoning culinary scene, the island provides the perfect blend of downtime and diversion. Lying 30 miles out at sea, Nantucket is the place to head for barefoot relaxation. Known as the “little grey lady”, the island has 80 miles of coastline to explore, with plenty to attract the waterborne ashore.
The Yachts AMICA MEA
The 152’ (46.33m) AMICA MEA has a superb layout for families looking to charter in New England this summer season. Sleeping 11 guests, she is available for prices from $160,000 per week, plus expenses.

With a flawless blend of American pedigree, the 157’ (47.85m) NICOLE EVELYN is perfectly suited to the cruising grounds of New England. Available for charter this summer for prices from $165,000 per week, plus expenses, for up to 11 guests.
The Bahamas is a year-round cruising destination with temperatures lingering between 70°F and 80°F, thanks to the constant warm trade winds. Winter and early spring are the most popular cruising seasons, while June marks the beginning of hurricane season, however, a handful of the charter fleet are based in The Bahamas and Florida (just a short hop away) year-round and provide ample opportunities for charterers to enjoy the warm temperatures and sun-filled days, where the occasional tropical rainstorm is usually short-lived. Whether you’re an avid diver, a fishing enthusiast, or simply want to enjoy the water toys, with warm waters that rarely dip below 72°F, there is never really a bad time to visit.
With more than 700 islands and uninhabited cays in The Bahamas to choose from, the opportunities for cruising are varied. From the cosmopolitan New Providence Island and Nassau, to the popular Exumas and the scalloped bays of the Abacos, the cruising possibilities are seemingly endless. Depending on the length of your charter, you could choose to combine the Exumas and Abacos in a two-week itinerary, or either archipelago as a stand-alone week-long charter. While exploring the Exumas, for example, spend a week cruising from Warderick Wells Cay to Highbourne Cay, fishing, diving, and simply relaxing on the miles of pristine, unspoiled beaches. If you are looking for a cruising ground that feels off the beaten path, the Abacos are for you. To really experience the islands, you need to venture beyond the well-known Great Abaco and Little Abaco to discover tiny islets, uninhabited cays, turquoise flats, and, of course, jump in the water to discover the stunning underwater world that lies beneath the surface.
The Yachts STAR DIAMOND
Enjoy cruising the Exumas aboard the tri-deck 154’ (46.94m) STAR DIAMOND, sleeping up to 10 guests for prices from $150,000 per week, plus expenses.
MAREA LA NAUTICA

Montana
As the first Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star Guest Ranch, The Ranch at Rock Creek takes the concept of luxury ranching to the next level. Originally a homestead, the 6,600-acre working ranch is nestled in a Montana valley in the shadow of the John Long Mountains. While this is the place to ride out into the sunset, horseback riding is but one of the outdoor pursuits on offer. Rock Creek is a “Blue Ribbon” fishing spot and offers some of the best fly fishing in the country, while back at the ranch guests can try skeet shooting, rodeo riding, rope throwing, or take a swim in the outdoor pool. Thirty-one rooms, including log cabins and historic barns, offer a mix of rustic charm and high-end amenities, while a luxury tented camp sits on the Creek itself. For a break from the equestrian lifestyle, guests can also indulge in a treatment at the spa, enjoy “frontier-to-table” dining at one of five restaurants, watch a movie in the on-site cinema, or aim for a strike with some ten-pin bowling. theranchatrockcreek.com
