Manager’s Message
Dear North Ranch Members, As May begins, we return to some semblance of regular Club activities with the Women’s Club Championship, Men’s Member Member Golf Tournament, and many USTA leagues. It is great to have these activities back on the calendar as we missed them in 2020. The Athletic Center is still on track for a June break ground date. The revised construction plans are awaiting the final stamp of approval, and we have already applied for the demolition permit as well. Financing is underway and still on schedule to be completed in May. We wanted to clarify that the Board has conflict of interest policies and followed them when selecting RCI (Steve Rice) for our contractor, and Bank of So Cal (Rich Hernandez). We look forward to sharing a more definite time frame with you in May. We will also communicate any routing changes for access to the Lakes golf course or the tennis courts, so our members know what to expect when they arrive to the Club. The Club continues to be busy for events and dining on both the upper patio and lower patio. We have seen many more families using the club, and we are looking into options for the future to offer childcare services in the evenings. Unfortunately, we do not have this service set up yet, but hope to soon. We must address a very important safety and policy issue. Recently, we have experienced disruption to areas in the
clubhouse from children not being supervised while families are dining. We also frequently see children running on the golf course and practice areas while families are dining on the upper and lower patio, resulting in our staff leaving the service area to bring the children back to the tables. Children are getting close to the pond as well as climbing on walls. This is extremely dangerous for their own safety as golfers are coming up the 9th hole of the Oaks, or practicing on the range, putting, and chipping greens. In addition to safety issues, it also is a major disruption to our members trying to enjoy their dining experience or golf. As a reminder, the golf course and practice areas are limited to members practicing and playing golf only. We welcome families to dine with us, but for the safety and enjoyment of all members, children must be supervised and seated with their families at all times when dining at the Club. Management will be monitoring this and if children are found unsupervised, it will result in a green card and be brought to the rules and regulations committee, which may result in suspension. We certainly hope it does not come to this. We appreciate all members taking this very seriously. We cherish our families at the Club and the safety and enjoyment by all is critical to the member experience. Thank you, Jenny Duce General Manager

Dear Members, I am so excited to see so many new faces around the Club. I hope you are able to reach out and meet some of our newer members to get to know them and see what a great addition they will be for the years to come. This month we have seen a significant slow down in the membership department, which has allowed us to catch up a bit and create some new onboarding items for new members. I anticipate that memberships will start to level off with the opening of more and more facilities and traveling becoming available. As I mentioned in my last month's article, we have increased our price of membership and anticipate we will continue to do so with the progression of the athletic center. David Kendell & Audrey McConnell Please welcome the Kendall’s to North Ranch. They live close by in Westlake Village. He is an Endocrinologist (diabetes physician) and Audrey is a PhD Scientist and Marketing & Business Development with OptimizeRx. They love golf, spending time outdoors and are looking forward to making new friends at North Ranch. David loves golf, traveling and cooking, and Audrey loves hiking and yoga. He loves a great steak and she loves champagne. Jeffrey & Shannon Maurer Please welcome the Maurer’s to North Ranch. Jeff is an attorney (healthcare focus). The Maurer’s have two children – Abby (17) and Will (16). Jeff grew up in Westlake Village and they moved here together in 2002. Jeff and Shannon love to play golf and tennis, and have friends at the Club. They enjoy books, cooking, and taking their dog, Lulu, for long walks. They like pizza and really good wine.
Arthur Stone & Joan Broderick Arthur is a Professor at the University of Southern California, where he has been for the last 7 years. Prior to that he was at Stony Brook University in NY for 36 years. Joan was also a Professor at USC, but is now retired. Arthur and Joan have two married children, Danielle (living in NC) and Martina (living in LA). They have lived in Southern California for the last 7 years and live in the beautiful Santa Monica Mountains (Topanga). Joan now loves gardening and sewing, and they are attached to their two Labrador Retrievers, Luli and Pippa. Bill & Janna Barry The Barry’s have been happily married to each other for 40 years and have two married daughters and three grandkids. They joined NR after Bill sold his wealth management business of 30 years and plan to enjoy golf, pickleball and dinners with friends. Bill and Janna love traveling, hiking, skiing. going to the beach and cooking are among their favorite things to do. They feel very blessed to be joining our North Ranch family. James & Maren Sullivan James and Maren have two wonderful children, Declan (8) and Isla (4). Maren was born and raised in Thousand Oaks and James was born in CT. James served as a Marine Corp at Camp Pendelton and is currently a Global Controller for CBRE, a commercial real estate firm. Maren is a Psychotherapist treating OCD/Anxiety and has her own practice. They are both USC alumni and are avid USC football fans. They joined North Ranch for their love of golf and creating more community connection and fun for the entire family. Michael & Parivan Modaberpou Michael attended USC. They joined NR to spend more time around golf, to be with good friends and they look forward to making new friends. Michael wants to give his family the opportunity to fall in love with golf and spend time enjoying it together. Their interests are golf, the gym, 3
movies, great food/restaurants, traveling, snowboarding, the outdoors and camping. Their favorite food is his mom’s Persian cooking. Michael and Pariva love a great cab w/a nice cut of steak, various single malts, IPA’s and Mezcal. Jeff & Susanna Dottl
Please welcome the Dottl’s to North Ranch. Jeff is in Healthcare (Administration) and Susanna is a stay-at-home mom and interior designer. They have two children Natalie (13) and Luke (10). Jeff and Susanna have lived in Thousand Oaks for about 7 years but have been in Ventura County much longer. They are fun-loving, beach-going, and believe family comes first. They love North Ranch for its family atmosphere and beautiful green grass. The Dottl’s enjoy golf, fly fishing, downhill skiing, going to the beach, and trying new restaurants. Their favorite meal would be Daube Provencal and seafood pasta; beverage Feisty Cherry Diet Coke! Max & Deidre Wellman Max and Deidre Wellman were both raised in Westlake Village. It holds a special place in their hearts because it is where the couple met, even though they have lived and worked over the hill in Los Angeles for more than a decade now. Max and Deidre are excited to begin their journey back to Westlake Village, starting with joining NRCC. Max is an attorney at Wolf, Rifkin, Shapiro, Schulman & Rabkin LLP, and Deidre is a host/producer for Entertainment

As it continues to warm up, here are some refreshing wines that are featured at the Club. Gaintza, Txakolina, Spain 2019 RP-90pts “Their flagship and eponymous white 2019 Txakolina is the classical tapas (locally known a pintxos) Txakoli, fresh and with a slight spritz that provides even more freshness. It's produced with 85% Hondarribi Zuri and 15% Gros Manseng grapes from limestone and clay soils with a granite mother rock, and it has 11.6% alcohol and a touch of sugar to compensate the acidity. In a healthy year like 2019, they didn't need to add any yeast for the fermentation. It has textbook herbal, citrus and green apple aromas. If I had to show someone what a textbook traditional Txakoli is like, I'd uncork this bottle. It has the austere, sharp and lightly fizzy style with citrus and green apple notes and a dry, tickling palate with an almost salty sensation in the finish. It's light and mellow.” Chateau de Nalys, “Saintes Pierres de Nayls,” Chateauneuf-du-Pape Blanc, 2017 RP-91pts “A blend of 36% Clairette, 29% Bourboulenc, 25% Grenache Blanc, 7% Roussanne and 3% Picardan, the 2017 Chateauneuf du Pape Saintes Pierres Blanc reflects the first vintage since the Guigal family took over ownership of this historic estate. It's a second wine, culled from elements that didn't go into the main cuvée, but it's still a solid effort. It's an interesting marriage of linear notes of crushed stone and lime with rounder, riper notes of melon and tangerine. Medium to full-bodied, there's a chalky-mineral-tonic feel on the palate that keeps it lively through the fresh, clean finish.” White Blend, Groth Estate, Oakville, 2019 “This wine is brilliant pale straw in color (like California hillsides in summer) with rich aromas of grilled peach, Tuscan melon and honey tangerine. Opening clean and fresh, there is a seamless acidity throughout the palate. Our kickoff to spring is our highly anticipated Cinco de Mayo, Tequila and Taco’s Party on the Patio on Wednesday, May 5. We will also have a special Mother’s Day Brunch. New events will include a Children’s Etiquette Class, and first time ever, The Jazz Supper Club. If you like Jazz, you will love this event! Children’s Etiquette Class, The ABC’s of Table Manners Saturday, May 22 at 5:30 PM Saturday, May 29 at 5:30 PM Children ages 8-12 years old will learn all about the ABC'S of table manners through this fun, informative class which includes: Good First Impression, Do's and Don’ts of Dining, Place Settings, Handling Utensils, Tutorial dinner and Table Talk. Theresa Thomas will teach children how to feel confident and show courtesy and respect in everyday life. All students will receive a certificate of completion. Wine & Nine Golf Tournament Sunday, May 23 at 3:00 PM This casual fun and easy golf format should appeal to all. (All player levels encouraged!) Golf will begin at 3p.m. with a progressive wine tasting and Chef Karl’s paired hors d’oeuvres on every other hole as you play on the course. Dinner and prizes will follow upstairs on the patio. Tennis Dear Members, Please join us in welcoming our new Director of Tennis, Jay Udwadia. Jay comes to North Ranch after 9 years as the head men's tennis coach at Oklahoma State University. During his time at OSU, his teams were ranked inside Division I’s Top 20 for 8 years in a row and reached a program high of #4 in the nation. Prior to his time as a Cowboy, Jay was the head coach at Fresno State for eight years, during which he was the two-time conference coach of the year. The team won 3 conference championships and ranked as high as #14 in the country. While at Fresno State, Jay also coached the NY Buzz in the World Team Tennis league (Billie Jean King’s franchise) during the 2008 and 2010 seasons. He guided the Buzz to their first ever World Championship, during which he coached several top players such as Martina Hingis. Jay began his head coaching career at Drake University where they won the MVC conference championships and he was awarded conference coach of the year. Prior to his time at Drake, Jay spent four years as the men's tennis assistant coach at Northwestern University. Jay competed a year on the ITF pro circuit and earned a world ranking, winning a doubles future and a total of 26 ATP points. He played college tennis at the University of Arkansas. Jay and his wife, Jennifer, have 3 young children. Be sure to drop into the Tennis clubhouse and say hello to Jay! He is eager to meet you all and get acquainted with the Club.

Dear NRCC Membership, As we enter tournament season here at the Club, please refer to the daily Course Conditions email or the Club calendar for times and dates of the events. Our first big event will be the Men’s Member-Member “Shootout” May 13th-16th. Courses and practice areas will be closed all day to non-participants Friday thru Sunday. Thursday, May 13th there will be limited tee times available for walking only for non-tournament players due to tournament practice rounds and the four Derby competitions that start at 4pm on all three nines. Unfortunately, there will not be any reciprocal rounds available for nontournament players at surrounding Clubs this year, due to their high demand for member tee times. I recommend that if you wish to play somewhere that weekend, that you plan far enough in advance for booking a tee time at some of the public courses, such as Moorpark CC, Rustic Canyon, Buena Ventura, Olivas Links, River Ridge or Tierra Rejada. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause, but this only occurs twice a year.
