Michael Silver Board President

President’s Message

Dear NRCC Members, Well, the 2021 Member-Member Golf Tournament is in the books. Congratulations to Steve Stark and Chris Tota our 2021 champions. I must say, the 9 teams in the Derby proved why they were there. Everyone played really incredible golf under very stressful conditions. It all came down to the last hole where three teams had a chance to win; but Mr. Stark drained a very difficult putt to clinch the win. The course was in fantastic shape (some say the best it’s been in years). Kudos to Ryan, Mark and their team, to Scott and his staff, to Jodi and Mauricio and all of their team for a fantastic job. A special shout out to Joel Beth for his continued generosity. We are on schedule with respect to the Athletic Center. Funding will be in place in the next week or so. Demolition is slated to commence in the latter part of June. Needless to say, cooperation from all of the members will be necessary as there will be significantly more interaction with Tennis and Golf as we need to accommodate use of bathrooms, probably a little more crowded parking, and disruption that will result from the demolition of the current Tennis facility and construction of the long awaited Athletic Center. I implore you all to be patient and be courteous to other members, staff, and the construction crew. Over the past year, we experienced a significant increase in the use of the Club by our members. We became victims of our own success. By that I mean, prior Boards were tasked with reducing the size of the “sales list”. To do so we amended (with membership approval) our ByLaws to allow members to leave the Club in a much shorter amount of time. To replace the exiting members we adopted the Preview program (which has had an approximate 70% conversion rate). So, during the past year we gained about 100 new memberships. Once we opened back up again (after we shut down due to Covid), it seems NRCC became everyone’s “go to” place to golf, play tennis and attend social events. No one was traveling for work or vacation. Kids weren’t attending school in person, people were working from home, etc. We saw (and continue to see) an unprecedented increase in the number of rounds of golf, sold out social events, etc. Further, while we may have, for example, 550 golf memberships, we actually

2 North Ranch Country Club | March 2021

have significantly more “users” (my term) of the Club as numerous memberships include not only the member, but their spouse and children (not to mention an increase in the number of guests). Until fairly recently, we were essentially confined to one space (the downstairs patio). The Board has recently addressed this increase in use by enacting a priority system which enables Equity Members to register for events sooner than the rest of the members. Equity members include Full Equity (access to golf and tennis); Golf Equity (access to golf but not tennis) and Athletic Equity (access to tennis, but not golf). We are aware of the discontent that this has caused, but remain hopeful that this will be temporary. We expect that, after June 15, and as we head into Fall members will resume taking vacations, will physically go to work, college age children will return to their campuses and minor children will resume in class learning. We are, on an ongoing basis, trying to come up with solutions that will be fair for all. We hope things will get better as a matter of attrition and as things get better throughout our local community. I urge you to please be patient. Which, of course, leads me to having to yet again address the issue of some members conduct while at the Club. It is disappointing that I even have to mention this, but NRCC is NOT a “Frat House”, yet some members act like it is (free to do and say whatever they want) without considering other members’ enjoyment of the Club. We still have golfers not raking bunkers, fixing ball marks on the greens and sanding divots in the fairways. Of course, those are the same members who are outraged when their ball lands in a shoe print in the bunker (you get my point). Some members continue to ignore our rules, including the dress code. Some members are getting into verbal (and sometimes physical) altercations with other members. This is not who we are or should ever be. I implore you all to be considerate of your fellow members. That means tucking in your shirts, adhering to the dress code, not smoking in areas where others may be, not drinking to the point of getting out of control, etc. We want all of our members to be able to enjoy all that the Club has to offer and it is imperative that we all treat each other with dignity and respect. I know I may sound like “Pollyanna”, but these are real concerns that affect us all. I hope you all will continue to see NRCC as your second home. The Board strives to make NRCC welcoming and inclusive, but we need all of our members to do the same. We have an exciting year ahead of us with new and great possibilities; let’s all enjoy all that the Club has to offer. Thanks again for indulging me. Best Regards, Michael Silver Board President

Manager’s Message

Dear Members, As the weather is getting warmer, the Club is excited to offer some great new events this summer! We look forward to seeing our families take advantage of these new events like our music in the park, family fun and movie night, Boogie Nights concert, and more. Please keep a look at the Club calendar on the NRCC website and be on the lookout for signups for these events. We are excited to bring back some of our traditional events as well, as Covid restrictions are lifting. Thank you to the membership for helping our team by returning carts to the cart barn upon completion of your round. This is a tremendous help to our staff and is appreciated by all. Additionally, when you arrive at the Club please be sure to make a full stop at the guard shack so that they can identify your parking decal sticker. By doing this, our security attendant is able to ensure that no unidentified vehicles enter the parking lot. In more exciting news, we are nearing demolition day for the Athletic Center. Please look for future communication as we get closer to the demo of the Tennis building to make way for the new Athletic Center. That’s right, it is finally happening! As we start this endeavor, please be patient as we figure out some logistical changes for golf and tennis access, parking, and tennis check-in. We will communicate more as we get closer, and thank you in advance for your flexibility during this time. In addition, we will be planning a demolition celebration event open to all members to celebrate the next chapter of the Club and we hope all can attend. Please look for more information on this fun, casual party. Lastly, our staff is here for you. If there is something we can do to make your experience at North Ranch better, please let myself or one of the management team members know. We thank you for your continued support of our Club and hope you have a wonderful summer! Best Regards, Jenny Duce General Manager

Nicole Chapman Director of Membership

Membership

Dear Members, I wanted to take the time to explain a few misconceptions I am hearing at the Club, primarily being our inbound process of new members, how many members we currently have and the facts about how many people are resigning or surrendering. Here is a bit of history of how we are in the position we are today. Until recently, the Club has had a long exit list of members looking to leave the Club. On average, the Club has 30-35 members added to the surrender/ sales list annually, and sales were not outpacing these resignations. Most years, the Club has more people leaving than joining, creating more treasuries (nondues paying positions in the Club). If that trend continued, the Club would have reached a situation that dues would no longer cover operational costs, and assessments or larger dues increases would have been required to sustain the Club. To be fiscally responsible, the Club chose to generate more sales. Over the last two and half years, the Club has been aggressive in sales to combat the previous year's lack of sales and get to a position that keeps the Club “healthy”. Add in COVID, which has completely changed the Country Club industry, with increased sales and creating more play than recorded history at the club. According to industry leaders, this trend will begin to slow down this summer and fall as industries open up more and start to return to normal. Other Clubs nationwide are already starting to see their rounds slow down. Also, I would like to further explain our current vetting process. At this time, a Membership Committee member meets with each new preview joining the Club. Additionally, when they submit a formal application, we run a background check and credit check as part of the application process. We require two equity sponsors to complete a sponsor form, which is presented to the Membership Committee and Board along with their application. As the final part of joining, each new member has to complete

a 1-hour orientation process that reviews the rules, dress code and other facets of the Club before they are able to use the Club. We have not exceeded the total number of 600 Full/Golf/Preview members. The Preview members we currently have are taking a treasury position and the Club will not go above this number, per the Bylaws. Furthermore, clubs across the nation are experiencing a demographic shift, and the average person joining a country club is a 42-year-old who is married with two children. Families are the new incoming trend at country clubs. More family-friendly amenities have been added to remain relevant and continue to sustain clubs, as is the case with our upcoming Athletic Center. These amenities are no longer considered an additional perk but an expectation and even the elite clubs are making these transitions. Lastly, the reason the Club still needs to focus on selling, is because we have seventy-five members looking to resign and leave the Club within the next 12 months. Fifty of the seventy-five members will resign on November 31, 2021. I hope this clarifies any questions, and please feel free to stop by the office or call anytime to discuss this further. Food & Beverage Wines for the Summer Domaine Carneros, “Le Reve,” Blanc de Blancs Le Rêve is a highly respected tête de cuvée - winery’s finest Sparkling wine and frequently named America’s Best Sparkling. French for “the dream,” Le Rêve is crafted from 100% estate-grown Chardonnay, making it a pure expression of Domaine Carneros. A perfect nose with lovely notes of white flowers, Meyer lemon, quince, pear and a hint of pineapple with a toasty to slightly smoky aroma. The palate opens up to honeysuckle and Crème brûlée. The full mouth feel leads to a very round and long finish.

Chardonnay, Chateau Montelena, Napa Valley Golden straw-colored in the glass, the wine opens with cinnamon and ripe peach, bolstered by aromas of melon, fig, and pear. More fruity than floral upon release, there’s nonetheless plenty of honeysuckle and spice, softening to green apple and vanilla. Initially fused with lemon curd and ripe orange, there’s dynamic tension transitioning to the midpalate between the suppleness of summer stonefruit and the austere acid beneath. The citrus lingers as well, amidst a billowy texture that bolsters the bare minerality, contrasted only by the whisper-soft hint of fresh baked bread. Bright and fresh, ripe apricot along with orange marmalade lend a slight sweetness peppered by toasted almond and clove. Presqui’le, Syrah, Santa Barbara County This sustainably-farmed Syrah includes 30% whole clusters and is aged for 18 months in French oak. Robust and gamey, the wine oozes with flavors of juicy blackberries, blueberry skin, cracked pepper, graphite, and savory herbs. Serve slightly chilled and drink up. Terre Nerre, Etna Rosso The purity of fruit is so impressive here with black cherry and dried strawberry to the ash and black-tea undertones. It’s medium to full body with firm, tight tannins and a crisp finish. Floral and some citrus-zest highlights to this. From organically grown grapes. Alex Foillard, Beaujolias-Villages Anytime you hear the words “Foillard” and “Beaujolais” in the same sentence—or read them on the same label— you can expect to be in for a treat. That holds true when the Foillard in question is not Jean but his son, Alex, and when the Beaujolais is not a Morgon, but a brand-new bottling of Beaujolais-Villages. Alex tracked down an excellent old-vine parcel situated just beneath the cru of Régnié, between Morgon and Brouilly. The delicate fragrance betrays his light touch in the cellar; this drinks like a Gamay infusion with lovely hints of potpourri, spice, and fresh grapes. Serve it cool, naturally. Best Regards, Mauricio Recinos Food & Beverage Director 7

Gold & Views In this month’s article I wanted to share my thoughts on what I love about our Oak Room. The “WOW” factors are twofold: our beautiful, elegant gold chandeliers and the gorgeous mountain views provided by our floor to ceiling bay windows. I wanted to share some pictures from past weddings who embraced those two specific aspects. There are so many little details you can incorporate by tying in the Gold: • • • • •

Chairs Linens Cake Stand Votives Candelabras

Weddings and Special Events are back in full force, and I would love to take you on a journey in assisting you from the initial tour to the result, which will be a very special celebration. Sincerely, Tania Trombetta Director of Catering

Women’s Golf 2021 Ladies Club Championship Robin Krieger is the winner of this year’s NRCC Women’s Club Championship. This was not surprising as Robin played in top form for all three days. She shot an 81, 85 and a stellar 77 on her last day. Robin Krieger first won the NRCC Women’s Club Championship title in 1998 and has gone on to win it 12 more times. In 1990, when she was a newer golfer with a 25 handicap, she was encouraged to enter her first tournament at her Rhode Island Golf Club. She won that tournament and has gone on to win many tournaments and titles since. She attributes her success to practice, practice and more practice. Robin is an amazing golfer and an amazing person on all levels. Congratulations again Robin!
