President’s Message
Fellow members, Some, probably not all of you, are aware that Bill Powell was elected by the Board to serve as President in 2021. Unfortunately, Bill has been unable to serve in that role and, as Vice President, I (with the Board’s vote of approval) am now serving as President. John Donovan has been elected by the Board to serve as Vice President. Rich Hernandez continues to serve as Secretary and John duHadway continues to serve as Treasurer. Needless to say, 2021 isn’t starting off any better than how 2020 ended. That being said, we are moving forward with our plans for the Athletic Center. In fact, we should, in the next 2-3 weeks, be sending our “working drawings” to various contractors to solicit bids for the project. We are diligently working on putting forth our financial information to provide to various banks who have shown an interest in financing the Athletic Center. We should be providing that information to the banks in the next 2-3 weeks.
If you are checking the daily emails you should know that we have had to deal with staffing issues, etc. because of Covid. I urge you all to remember the requirement to wear masks, both in the club house and outside, and to continue to socially distance. Staying open and operating as we all would like requires everyone to do their part. It’s not just about you, but all of our members and our staff. When this all began, I think very few of us knew anyone who had tested positive. I no longer think that is the case, as I believe we all now know of persons who have tested positive, have been required to quarantine and regrettably, have been hospitalized. We continue to monitor the County mandates and adjust as quickly as we can. For example, we just revised the Guest Policy for Golf to allow 1 guest per member Tuesday through Thursday, no guests on Fridays and 1 guest per member after noon on Saturdays and Sundays. This is an addition to allowing immediate family guests. The guest policy for Tennis has also been expanded.
We continue to have record use of the club (continued historic use of the golf course and tennis facilities, cart rentals, etc.) while adhering to the Covid mandates of the County. Given the recent lifting of the “stay at home” orders, we will again be offering outside dining consistent with the protocols that we must follow to allow the Club to remain open to the members. We are most appreciative of the membership’s use of the wonderful food and beverage operations and continued participation in the events that Jodi and her staff have so creatively provided.
As we have previously advised there has been some vandalism and theft in our parking lots. Please be diligent in keeping your purses, briefcases, etc. in your trunks (and out of sight). We are stepping up our monitoring of the parking lots and have requested additional assistance from the Ventura County Sheriff ’s department.
The Preview program is off to a good start and the Membership Committee, as well as Nicole and Rick, is working tirelessly to continue those efforts.
Thanks in advance for your understanding and cooperation in what continue to be very unusual and difficult times.
I hope everyone took the opportunity to watch the Southwestern Invitational tournament on the Golf Channel. It was so inspiring to see our club on National television and to hear the accolades from the announcers regarding NRCC, the course conditions and the tournament itself. Kudos to Charley Johnson and Chris Harrison (co – chairs) and particularly to all who made this such a great success, from the Pro Shop, Course maintenance, Food and Beverage, Jenny and her staff and, of course, all of the volunteers. If you did not know the history of the tournament, it was started by Charley’s father, C.W., 42 years ago. I know that C.W. would be immensely proud of Charley’s efforts to continue his father’s legacy.

It certainly wasn’t in my mind that I would be called upon to serve as President, but I know we have a great Board and Management Team, who will insure we (I) get it right.

Manager’s Message
The 43rd Southwestern Invitational hosted by Pepperdine University wrapped up on Wednesday, January 27th, with San Diego State making a comeback and taking the team title. David Puig from Arizona State fired an impressive three-day total of -10 to win the individual honors! The greens were speedy with tough pin placements that made it a great test of golf. We were fortunate not to have the predicted rains, but the winds posed some bitter and challenging conditions on Monday and Wednesday. Ryan Bentley, and every member of our golf course maintenance team worked many hours to get the full course ready for this event. The addition of the mulch in specific areas was intentional so it would be highlighted on the cameras. Some of the mulch will stay where it is because it does enhance the aesthetics and features of our natural landscape, but you may see us remove and redistribute some of the mulch out of playable areas that may impact member play. The contrast of the tan decomposed granite, with the darker brown mulch and our lush green fairways showed very well on television! Rick Siemons worked tirelessly and led the daily operations from load in, to set up, logistics, and break down, and was in constant communication between the Club, the Golf Channel, Pepperdine University, and our tournament chairmen: Charley Johnson and Chris Harrison. We are grateful for everyone’s collective efforts to execute the event. Thank you for the kind emails and notes we received about how wonderful the club showcased and how proud you are to be members at North Ranch Country Club. That means the world to us. Thank you for watching the tournament on television. Thank you for volunteering to help the event. Dear Members, I hope you were all able to watch our boys from Pepperdine play in the televised Southwestern tournament, which featured our beautiful golf course on Golf Channel! It was such an exciting tournament and congratulations to all of the players that participated. Valentine’s Day Top Picks For this holiday, celebrate with your loved one with one of these amazing wines. Taittinger, Comtes de Champagne, Blanc de Blancs, 2008 A staple in the champagne world. The Comtes de Champagne has been an absolute classic, year in year out, and great vintages such as the 2008 prove why this wine is so special. Fresh, elegant, and vibrant with sought out brioche notes, and a long finish, this wine is drinking extremely well now and can age for many years. Domaine Leflaive, Puligny-Montrachet, 2018 Leflaive is considered one of the top producers of Montrachet. The Domaine owns parcels of the greatest chardonnay vineyards in the world with majority of them located in the Cote de Beaune. The 2018 vintage showcases expressive fruit and richness. Concentration of lush fruit is balanced by fresh acidity. The Domaine is meticulous in terms of fruit quality and sort the grapes twice, once in the vineyard and again in the winery. At any level, whether it be village to grand cru, a bottle of Leflaive is always a treat and rarely disappoints. Louis Latour, En Chevret, Volnay 1er Cru, 2014 Typically, Volnay tends to produce a bigger style of Pinot Noir in the Cote de Beaune and this wine stays true to that assumption. Dark, firm tannins and ripe dark fruit, this wine is on the bigger side for Pinot Noir but does not sacrifice one bit of elegance. Its body is firm with fresh acidity. This wine is looking for any gamey foods or any dishes with mushrooms. This is wine is just starting to drink well and will continue to do so for a few more years. Cheers, Mauricio

We had a great time with our virtual January events. Family Bingo was super interactive, and it was good to see the kids have so much fun on Zoom! Especially watching them do Tik Tok dances in between bingo games. Suzanne Groth was very informative, and the wines were drinking so nice! We also enjoyed our Tequila Zoom. I cannot seem to remember any of it. Haha! We are looking forward to all the upcoming February events: Wednesday, February 10, Kids Valentine’s Decorating Cookie Kit The Kids will love this fun Cookie Kit to decorate their own special Valentine’s cookies for their friends and family. The kit will include: 3 house baked shortbread heart shaped cookies and 3 house baked shortbread double heart shaped cookies. 3 piped icing bags, assorted sprinkles and candies. A fun craft for the whole family! Sunday, February 14, Valentine’s Dinner To-Go Chef has prepared a Romantic Valentine’s Three Course Dinner to enjoy at home. Andrea Jackson On December 19th at 9:48pm, we welcomed our first child into the world. Colton Thomas Jackson showed up right on his due date weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces and measuring 20 inches long. We are so blessed to have ended such a challenging year with this perfect new addition to our family. We can’t wait to introduce everyone to NRCC’s newest member!
Mike Choi Mike's grandaughter Willa Apple Goodwin celebrated her 1st birthday on January 13th! A child's first birthday is very significant in Korean culture, and Willa is wearing traditional Korean dress to mark the occasion. Happy birthday Willa!

Dear NRCC Membership, As we continue to navigate through Covid-19, we have again modified our guest policy, effective January 30, 2021. We will allow one guest anytime Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, no guest play on Friday, except for immediate family members and one guest per membership (including immediate family) after 12pm on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday Holidays. We encourage everyone that brings a guest out to play that they inform their guest of the Club’s mask and dress code policy and have them fill out and sign the Covid-19 consent form prior to playing. The electronic Covid-19 consent form can be found in the morning email, which can be forwarded to your guest ahead of time or they can fill out a paper form in the Golf Shop. If you have any questions regarding Guest Play, please contact the Golf Shop. Personal Best & Achievements • Tom Conway recorded a satisfying hole-in-one December 11th, 2020 on Oaks #8. From 148 yards, Tom hit a smooth 8 iron towards the hole, the ball took one bounce and BAM, straight into the cup! • New member Derek Bacon scored himself a hole-in-one on Oaks #8 on January 13th. Nine iron in hand, Derek hit a solid shot, producing a nice little draw into the hole that landed 10 feet behind the flag in the middle of the ridge. With the ridge’s help the ball rolled back down the slope and found the bottom of the cup. • On Valley #3 from 180 yards, Rob Brodersen carded his first career ace. Rob’s ball landed a yard from the hole and rolled in gracefully. • Jeff Dworman had a nice eagle on Oaks #7. A smooth gap wedge landed on the green just past the hole, but with some impressive backspin sunk the ball in the cup. • Big congrats to Michelle Costanzo for her first ever hole-in-one! On Oaks #8 from 120 yards, Michelle hit a high fade that landed short of the green and rolled straight into the cup. tee saw it go in and went crazy. Chip Humphries has carded two eagles on two different par 4’s in a week span! On Lakes #1 he hit driver, wedge in the hole and on Oaks #7 he hit driver, wedge in the hole! On January 16th, Ron Popper recorded his 3rd hole-in-one. However, a week prior, Ron lost his 8 iron, which would have been his club of choice for Oaks #4 from the blue tees. So, he had to compromise by choking down on a 7 iron. He hit a nice little draw over the trap that landed about 10 feet short of the hole but then rolled straight in!

TOURNAMENT RESULTS Men’s Individual Match Play Update Click Here to View Championship Bracket and Deadlines Southwestern Invitational Results The College-AM was a bit different this year than the previous forty-one years, because the members could not play with the kids due to Covid-19 restrictions. With that being said, we still sold out the event and created a fun format that everyone enjoyed. The team of Rob Snyder, Darian Cohen, Jerry Deaton and Trevor Colby captured the 2021 College-AM title with the help of their blind draw Collegiate partners, Jiri Zuska from Louisville and Christo Lamprecht from Georgia Tech. Special thanks to Charlie Johnson, Chris Harrison and the Pepperdine Golf team for their dedication and hard work to make this such a special event.
