President’s Message
Dear Members, I hope you all are enjoying your summer, particularly now that we all can travel a bit before the kids go back to school. Here at the club, we are getting closer to getting back to normal, with numerous social, golf and tennis events being scheduled and, in most cases, sold out. We really appreciate your participation. By now I’m sure you’ve noticed that we are progressing with the Athletic Center. We are very excited to see this finally get off the ground and moving forward. Please, during this construction period, be extra careful and considerate of others. Regrettably, we still have ongoing issues with “conduct” around the club, whether it is unattended children, dress code violations, smoking in non-smoking areas, generally “over indulging”, mistreatment of our staff and rude and belligerent behavior. This also includes posting things that take place at the Club on Facebook, Instagram and other Social Media outlets. Frankly, while some of them may be funny to some, to many they paint us in a bad light. The Board will be looking into developing a Social Media Policy so as to provide guidance as to what is or is not acceptable. As I’ve stated before, we are not a “frat house.” We are a country club, and with that comes the need to conduct oneself accordingly. Regrettably, it has now come down to the Board initiating a “zero tolerance policy” with respect to what appears to be an escalation of bad behavior. As a result, the Board has initiated investigations into several recent violations of our rules and has authorized proceedings to suspend and, in extreme cases, take steps to expel members. Letters, President’s messages, and postings do not seem to have had much effect. As a result, more severe penalties have become necessary. This absolute lack of common decency by some is disheartening and will not be tolerated. 2 North Ranch Country Club | March 2021
Our By Laws are very clear that “improper conduct” includes conduct by a Member, his/her guests, family, or any of them, which the Board, in its sole discretion, determines to be “detrimental to the welfare, safety, harmony or reputation of the Club or its Members.” For those of you may not know, there is a method by which a member can bring rule violations to the attention of the Board and, specifically, the Rules and Regulations Committee, by the issuance of what is known as a “Green Card.” In other words, if you see something, say something. We continue to monitor issues related to Covid and the County guidelines. We diligently follow up on any information that someone has been infected with Covid and make sure that all contacts are advised. However, we continue to do so being respectful of privacy rights. Finally, while we are saddened by Ryan Bentley leaving North Ranch, we are grateful for all he has done for us in making NRCC an extraordinary golfing experience. Please know that the Board is moving swiftly to find a successor. We wish Ryan all the best in his future endeavors. Please be kind to all of the North Ranch family. Thanks again for indulging me. Dear North Ranch Members, It is hard to believe that school is about to start, and our summer is coming to an end. However, we had many activities for our members to enjoy this summer and know many were able to take advantage of the fun events. We still have some amazing upcoming events to enjoy this fall and look forward to seeing many families at the Club. Live music is finally back Friday evenings on the lower patio. Enjoy pizza or small bites and some tunes! The tennis building went through demolition last week to make way for our new Athletic Center. We are very excited to see this process begin! A more in-depth communication regarding the timeline and projected milestones of the Athletic Center will be provided after demolition. As a result of the tennis facility demo, our Athletic Members can temporarily use the main building locker rooms, restrooms and lounges. Dress code is defined by area and must be adhered to in each space. Athletic Members must check in through the main building prior to going to their reserved court. The tennis desk will have towels for you to take to the courts. All towels in the locker rooms are from a separate supply company and should remain in that location. I want to share with you some of our operational challenges, but first want to extend a sincere “thank you” to our members for their patience. We have had some difficult staffing challenges in a few departments, particularly in the kitchen and food and beverage. We are actively recruiting, interviewing, and hiring good candidates as fast as we can find them. We hope to keep adding to our roster to provide improved service to our members. The dress code has also been a challenge, and we find that many infractions are from guests of our members. To avoid unnecessary conversations, please inform all guests of the Club dress code prior to their arrival. Thank you for your support of the Club, and I look forward to seeing you soon! Dear Members, I am thrilled to see that we have started construction on the new Athletic Center and look forward to watching the new facility come to fruition. I know there will be quite a buzz in the community and look forward to showcasing this exciting project. I am also excited to announce that the Club will be extending our current Preview Program until December 31st. However, the Board has approved moving forward, the Preview Program will be change from a 12 month preview period to now an 8 month preview period starting August 1st. I look forward to continuing the success of the Club and combating the large group of people resigning in November. As a reminder, the members voted to alter the exit process of the Club last October and with that change gave everyone on the sales or surrender list the option to resign with 12 months’ notice, thus creating a large group of people slotted to resign in November of this year. With that said, I am confident that the Club will be in a great position starting 2022 and feel incredibly successful what the Club has been able to accomplish in the last two and a half years. Thank you to all the members that have referred their friends and family to the club! Ben and Seda Hall – Full Golf We are excited to welcome the Hall family. Ben is the CEO of GSMS. They have five amazing children, Zachariah (19), Andrew (16), Enzo (15), Bella (14), and Athena (8). The Halls recently moved to Westlake Village and look forward to becoming a part of the 4 North Ranch Country Club | March 2021
North Ranch community. They have already loved their time here and all the friends they have made. Tim Costa and Kholona Dablan – Business Full Golf Please welcome Tim and Kholona to the club. Tim is a Partner/General Manager at Thousand Oaks Toyota and Kholona is the VP of KD Properties. They have 3 children, Laith (20), Ayva (13), and Isabella (5). They have recently moved to the area they are looking forward to meeting more people in the North Ranch community and enjoying the food and golf here at the Club. Ben and Gretchen Molnar – Associate Let’s all welcome the Molnar family. Ben is a Forensic Engineer at Lightpoint Scientific and Gretchen is a Media Delivery Specialist at Epsilon. He is an avid golfer and plays competitively in US Amateur and US open qualifiers. They bought their first home in Newbury Park last year and look forward to getting to know our Club and members. Clifford and Liz Querol - Athletic North Ranch extends their warmest welcome to the Querol family. Clifford and Liz are both physicians at Kaiser. The Querol’s love tennis, travel, helping others and are involved with community service. They have one daughter, Rebecca (5) and look forward to enjoying the events at the Club. They love Japanese and Italian food and their favorite beverages are old fashioneds and champagne. Eric Jedrzejek and Natascha Backes – Athletic Please welcome Eric and Natascha! Eric is a Consultant and Natascha is in Compliance at Amgen. They have two beautiful daughters, Karina (16) and Danica (14). They are a great family with long-time roots in the community. They are looking forward to meeting even more members at the Club! Omid and Melissa Noori – Athletic We are excited to welcome the Noori’s. Omid is a Market Leader with US Bank. They have two amazing
children, Ariana Noori (8) and Bronx (5). Melissa is really enjoying tennis and Omid is a solid golfer that looks forward to getting out on the course to play. Michael and Meredith Druyen – Athletic Please welcome the Druyen’s. Michael and Meredith are retired and live in Westlake Village. They are very social, like to travel, foodies and love wine! When they are not at the Club, they enjoy their children and grandchildren. They recently moved to Westlake from Los Feliz and look forward to using all of the Club’s facilities and participating in the Club’s social events. Meredith previously lived in Westlake for many years and has many friends at NRCC and in the community. David Abas and Gina Henry – Athletic We are delighted to welcome David and Gina. David is a real estate broker and Gina is a medical doctor. David and Gina live in North Ranch and love the community. They have one son, Jacob, who is 3 years old. They want to support and grow with their neighborhood and enjoy all that life has to offer! Being with their family, friends, travel, fine dining, live music, Jazz & Blues, tennis, cigars, classic cars, sports cars, movies, concerts, museums are some of the things they enjoy. They are foodies, dine out frequently and love Springbank, Talisker, Glendornach (scotch). Percival and Luxmi Vaz - Athletic Please welcome the Vaz’s. They have four daughters who are all adults, Alicia, Sabrina, Nicole, and Vanessa. They have three wonderful grandchildren, Olivia (6), Logan (6) and Caleb (4). Percy is a deep thinker, quiet and passionate about family and business. Luxmi has strong family values, is hardworking and a true and loyal friend. They joined to have a place to meet socially with friends (including current members) and family and to have a backup plan for last minute eating if they don’t have time to cook. They love to travel, read fiction and non-fiction books, music, decorating and
wine tasting. Percy and Luxmi love all different types of food, great wines, vodka and single malt scotches. Ali Siam – Business Transfer Please welcome Ali. Ali knows the Club well and is the son of a member. He current works as a Sports Agent and Real Estate Developer. He has one son, Kayvon, who is 6 and looks forward to getting him out on the course. Ali was previously a member and is excited to return to the Club to create even more memories. Grape of the Month! Syrah Possibly my favorite red variety, Syrah, can be so diverse and extraordinary from multiple regions of the world. I tend to always gravitate towards the Rhone Valley, but beautiful wines are being made from Barossa Valley as well as other parts of Australia, South Africa, Santa Barbara, Paso Robles, Sonoma, and even Tuscany. Granted each expression shows some uniqueness and is reflective of where it is being produced, one can expect Syrah to be juicy, supple, almost elegant, with black and blue fruits at center stage and a hint of pepper in the background. The Rhone Valley tends to showcase earthier and meatier tones, while other regions like Australia are much more fruit forward. At the club, we have a couple of really great examples of how special Syrah can be in the right hands.

Tobreck “The Factor” Barossa Valley, South Australia “The 2016 vintage of The Factor Shiraz is a deep purple, almost black color. Intense black fruits make up the aromatic profile, such as satsuma plum, blackberry and boysenberry. Dark chocolate, roasted espresso and licorice. The palate is plush, soft and textural with a deep core of fruits supported by gentle yet concentrated tannins and long acidity.”
Delas “Domaine des Tourettes” Hermitage, Northern Rhône “The color shows brilliant, deep red hues. The nose is powerful and complex, expressing blackberries, spices, and leather. On the palate, Domaine des Tourettes is firm but silky, with a tightly-knit tannic structure that is the hallmark of wines that have a great future.”
Ramey “Rodgers Creek” Sonoma Coast “A step up, the 2014 Syrah Rodgers Creek Vineyard is a blockbuster effort that is reminiscent of a good vintage of the Côte Rôtie La Mouline from Guigal. Awesome

Guigal “Chateau d’Ampius” Côte-Rôtie, Northern Rhône “The hallmark of Château d’Ampuis is an unbelievably seductive perfume full of sweet black fruits and spices, and an elegance despite the intense concentration of fruit (prunes, blackberry) and tannin. Château d’Ampuis defines what a great Côte-Rôtie should be with its beautiful balance, muscular complexity and length. The 2016 is a wine from a tannic and muscular vintage due to the hot climate. Solid tannins, yet well rounded by long oak aging.”

Dear Members, This July, we were so honored to be the host venue of a beautiful South Indian Wedding here at the Club! It was a 2-day affair, with the wedding ceremony taking place on a Friday morning on the upper patio, and the reception taking place on the following Saturday night in our Oak Room. The groom arrived on a white horse for the ceremony procession, and the bride changed her saree a grand total of 3 times during the ceremony. What a joy it was to have hosted and witnessed such a beautiful and colorful celebration! Many of you may already know that North Ranch does accept outside catering clients, offering event services ranging from weddings to business luncheons, and everything in between! If you know anyone who would like to consider North Ranch for a wedding, or any other kind of event, please do not hesitate to contact the Catering Department. Family Carnival Back to School on the Patio Sunday, August 15 at 4:30pm Family Fun and Festivities. Bring the whole family and have a blast. The children will have an action packed hour and a half of amazing Carnival Games, Bouncers, Face Painting, Glitter Tattoos, Carnival treat, a Carnival Kiddie Tune Car Ride and a Giant Ferris Wheel. DJ, Mark Ray will get us all doing the Conga, Hoola Hoops, Scavenger hunt and lots of dancing to make for one exciting party!! The adults can enjoy the cocktail hour while the kids are running around! The fun starts at 4:30 followed by an adult and children’s dinner buffet at 6:00pm. Dear Membership, If you have not noticed, there are a few new faces in the golf shop. Please welcome Michael Bellemeur, Assistant Golf Professional, Conner Boyd, Assistant Golf Professional and JP Guimaraes, Golf Shop Attendant. Michael brings some expertise to the operation. He was the Director of Golf at Calabasas for the past 4 years and prior to that worked at several clubs in Florida. Conner is new to the golf business, but he is eager to learn all about it. He graduated from San Diego State with a degree in Communications and he plans on getting his PGA credentials. JP will be starting his junior year at Cal Lutheran University, and he plays on the golf team as well. JP has worked in the golf business prior to here at his local club where he grew up, San Ramon GC. Assistant Professional Reina Kearns is officially on maternity leave and is expected to return in early December. Her due date is Aug 6th, and she is expecting a baby boy named Mathew. The Club has lifted the restricted guest policy that has been in place for the past year. We are now back to our normal guest policy. Please take the time to review, so you can plan accordingly. • Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday & Friday a Primary and Secondary Member may bring up to (3) guests at any time. • Saturday, Sunday & Monday Holidays a Primary and Secondary Member may bring (1) guest before 12pm and up to (3) guests after 12pm. • The same guest can only play a maximum of (6) times per year. • Junior Dependents are not allowed to bring guests unless they are accompanied by a parent. • Adult Children (26+ years old) can play a maximum of (12) per year at 50% off the going guest rate. We appreciate all Members who plan to bring a guest out to play that they notify them about the Club’s dress code prior to arriving to the Club. He hit a baby draw 5 iron that landed short of the green, which then kicked left and then rolled in the hole! TOURNAMENT RESULTS 2021 Men's Senior Club Championship & Senior-Junior Championship - Congratulations to Craig Steinberg on capturing his 7th Senior Club Championship! Craig fired rounds of 72-70 for a two-day total of 1-under par, which was six shots better than the next best competitor. On the net side of things, Don Gruberger carded rounds of 72-68 to capture the Overall Net Championship, which was also six shots clear of the next best. In the Senior-Junior event, Kelly Jocoy & Loren Rosenberg fired net rounds of 65-62, which was good enough to edge out the teams of West &
Walker and Huang & Fulop by one stroke. Special congratulations to Perin Johnson on firing a gross score of 74 on day one, which was 4 shots better than his age! Perin wound up winning both Net and Gross in his flight. Lastly, congratulations to all the other flight winners, Mike Sidoti, Mark McGough, Jeff Johnston and Gerry Hribal.

Dear Members, It was another exciting month on the tennis side at North Ranch. I’d like to congratulate the USTA Men’s 8.0 team, Men's 3.5 team, Women’s 3.0 team, Women's 8.0 mixed team and the USTA 9.0 ladies 55 and over team who made the sectionals this year. We are proud of you and hope we have more teams who qualify next year! Thank you everyone for being so positive and patient towards the transition phase of the new athletic center project. It’s important that we keep checking in downstairs of the main golf entrance at the Club. We will keep everyone informed of any new information as we continue the renovation. The inconveniences will be more than worth the wait once we have that world class facility complete! Also, at the front desk I’ve put up a letter that Vicki Chud wanted to share with the membership. She departed North Ranch last month after working here for over 16 years. We wish her all the best in her new position! Here’s to another great month ahead. Work hard and hydrate well! Go Ranchers!

Vera hit her driver and the ball landed 3 feet in front of the blue pin and rolled right in. Vera did not see it but her cart partner, Tammy Snyder saw it and said “ I think the ball went in” and sure enough, her ball was in the cup. Witnesses for the hole in one were: Tammy Snyder, Delma Gottlieb and Dori Chiang.
WOMEN’S GOLF TEAM PARTY The golf team ladies got together for a celebratory dinner to honor the out going captain, Jill Pfannkuch for a job well done. Thank you Jill for doing a fantastic job! The team also welcomes the incoming captain, Julie Webster and co captain, Tracy Orue.
