FOUR SQUARE

At Home Recreation How to Play: Played on a square court divided into four squares, numbered one through four. One player stands in each of the squares, with the highest ranked player in number one, lowest in number four. You bounce the ball among the players, bouncing once in the other person's square before that person bounces it back. Anyone who violates the rules will have to move down in the ranking, or be eliminated with another player rotating in to square four. Number of Players: Four, unless you take turns. Equipment: A four square court or sidewalk chalk, a playground ball. Elimination: Failing to hit the ball into another square Allowing the ball to bounce more than once in their own square Hitting the ball out of bounds or onto an inside line Hitting the ball incorrectly such as holding, catching or carrying Hitting the ball with a part of the body that is not a hand Hitting the ball out of turn Each time a player is eliminated, that player leaves the court or goes to the lowest position (4) and all players advance to the higher numbered square.

Bouncing Bubbles! Here is an easy and fun recipe for bubbles that bounce! You Will Need: 4 Tbsp. Water 2 Tbsp. Sugar 1 Tbsp. Dawn Dish Soap Winter Gloves (Kid Gloves or Cotto Gloves) Bubble Wands Mix all the ingredients together, stir until the sugar dissolves, and then have fun blowing bubbles.b Fun Tip: To make the bubbles bounce you need to wear soft gloves, blow the bubbles gently, and let them softly bounce on your hand. Then you can gently bounce the bubbles and even pass them from person to person!

PLAY DOUGH Each batch makes just a bit over one cup of play dough. If you want to do rainbow colors, begin with white and work your way all the way through the rainbow. WHAT YOU NEED 1 cup flour 1/4 cup salt 3/4 cup of waterbminusb3 tablespoons 3 tablespoons of lemon juice 1 tablespoon cooking oil 2 packets kool-aid (optional for fragrance and coloring) DIRECTIONS Measure the water and lemon juice into a heatproof, microwavable 2-cup measuring cup. Heat in the microwave until just boiling, about three minutes. Meanwhile, mix together the flour and salt. If usingbKool- Aidbfor the fragrance, slowly (and I mean s-l-o-w-l-y, because the mixture will foam a bit) pour the Kool-Aid packets into the HOT water and lemon juice mixture and add additionalbfood coloringbto intensify the color if desired. .

Slowly pour the liquid into the flour and salt mixture, and stir with a wooden paddle until it just barely begins to form a dough. Drizzle the tablespoon of cooking oil over the dough and stir again until it forms a ball. At this point, you may want to knead the dough with your hands. It may feel a bit sticky, too, but DO NOT add more flour. As the dough cools it will thicken and become less sticky.b Once the dough is completely cooled, you may add flour a tablespoon at a time until it is the perfect consistency. Allow the dough to finish cooling a bit on a sheet of aluminum foil, parchment or wax paper. By the time you finish the next batch of play dough, the first will be cool enough to store

Shaving Cream Painted Easter Eggs SHAVING CREAM EGGS PROJECT SUPPLIES: ·bbbbb Shaving Cream ·bbbbb Card stock ·bbbbb Paint ·bbbbb Tray or box lid ·bbbbb Paintbrush, toothpick or fork (something with a pointy end) ·bbbbb Newspapers ·bbbbb Scraper tool or old gift card To get started with the messy part, spray some shaving cream onto your tray and spread it around. I actually used a cookie sheet covered in tin foil which made for a much easier clean-up! Next takebthe paint and squirt it all over the shaving cream. I used acrylic paint, but washable tempera paint shouldbalso work. I did blobs of paint throughout, but the kiddosbcould also makeblines, squiggles, anything they want really, with the paint. Now for the fun part! Using the pointy end of a paint brush, dragbit through the shaving cream and paint making straight lines back and forth. Then do it again, but this time go up and down.bThe shaving cream will startbto get a marbleized look to it. And this would be a fun time for the kids to experiment with different tools, like a fork or toothpick.

This next stepbgets a little messy and the younger kiddos might need a little help, but it’s what makes this whole craft project! Take one of your paper shapesband placed it on top of the shaving cream, applying a little bit of pressure so it smooshes into the shaving cream and paint.bThen pull it up and put it in a safe place to sit for a few minutes. Using some sort of scraping tool (like an old gift card) scrape all of the shaving cream off of the paper. Let the paint dry for a bit and then your project will be ready to be put on display!

Bring the Beauty Inside

Do you have plant pots that can be painted or repurposed? Paint a planter in anyway that you see beauty! Add your favoXrite plant and bring the beauty inside!

Paper Roll Chicks What you’ll need: Strips of yellow card stock (1.5ƍ wide by 5.5ƍ long) Small scrap of yellow paper 6ƍ pipe cleaners Googly eyes (or make your own out of paper) Pink pencil crayon Black gel pen Glue Scissors Single hole punch

Use your imagination! Design your chicks!

SPRING ANIMALS !! Paper Roll Bunnies

What you’ll need: Coloured cardstock (or a painted toilet paper roll) Polka dot scrapbook paper White pom pom or cotton ball Googly eyes (or make your own out of paper) Black gel pen Glue Scissors Something for their whiskers (hay, straw, paper)

Use your imagination! Colour and design your bunny!

HOPSCOTCH Use some sidewalk chalk and make a hopscotch grid. Number the squares from one to nine. Pick a rock that is good for tossing. Small ones can bounce too much, and larger ones are hard to throw. Start by tossing the rock onto Square 1. Hop over the rock and hop with a single foot or both feet (to follow the hopscotch pattern) all the way to the end. Turn around and come back, stopping on Square 2. Balancing on one foot, pick up the rock in Square 1 and hop over Square 1 to the start. Continue this pattern with Square 2. And so on. If you toss your rock and miss the correct square, your turn is over. This game can be played with any number of people, but only one person can go at a time. If it's raining or dark or too cold, you can use indoor mats or foam pieces, or find a pattern on the floor to follow, perhaps using a beanbag instead of a rock. Number of Players: One at a time. Equipment: Hopscotch grid, rock or beanbag.

CHARADES The traditional way: Taking turns each player draws an idea from the basket (or word generator) and using gestures they try and describe the idea to the teammates. When the team guesses correctly they receive a point and play is handed over to the other team. Play continues until the team with the most points wins. (The points or game length should be determined prior to the beginning of the game).

Wherebkids learnband play

Tips for Playing Charades with Kids *Usebpicture flashcards for younger playersbwho can’t read. *Instead of using hand gestures to describe the category, simply say what it is (an animal, an object, a character, etc.)

https://kidactivities.net/chara des-ideas-for-kids/ https://www.wordgenerator.net/charades -generator.php#generator-bookmark

*Set a timer allowing a certain amount of time to describe the idea and when the time is up, the turn goes to the next team.

ROCKCANDY

WHO KNEW SCIENCE COULD BE SO SWEET!

Try using these house hold items to make a sweet treat while learning about Solution Supersaturation and Evaporation.

You will need: A wooden skewerb A clothespin 1 cup of water 2-3 cups of sugar A tall narrow glass or jar Optional: 2 dropsbfood colouring and 1/2 to 1 teaspoon flavouring extract or oil

Pour the water into a pan and bring it to boil. If you want your candy to have a colour and flavour, add food colouring and flavouring extract to the water Pour about 1/4 cup of sugar into the boiling water, stirring until it dissolves. Keep adding more and more sugar, each time stirring it until it dissolves, until no more will dissolve. This will take time and patience and it will take longer for the sugar to dissolve each time. Be sure you don’t give up too soon. Once no more sugar will dissolve, remove it from heat and allow it to cool for at least 20 minutes. Carefully pour the sugar solution into the jar almost to the top. Clip the wooden skewer into the clothespin so that it hangs down inside the glass and is about 1 inch (2.5 cm) from the bottom of the glass making sure that it is hanging straight down the middle without touching the sides. Allow the jar to fully cool and put it someplace where it will not be disturbed. Now just wait. The sugar crystals will grow over the next 3-7 days.

What you will need: Scissors Yarn or String Wood plank Paint or Stain Hammer

Nails (measuring 1 1/4 inches length. make sure they have big heads for the thread to go around, not the small craft nails)

What to do: You can choose to paint or stain the wood as you like. If you stain it don’t forget to clear coat with something so it lasts. Make a paper stencil to follow the outlines of the letters. Tape the stencil to the board so it doesn’t move. Now you can start hammering in the nails. Be sure to leave room to have the string go around. Once all of the nails are in place remove the paper stencil. To start threading your letters simply tie a knot at one end and start outlining the whole letter before you start getting all messy with the string. To finish off your threading simply tie a few knots around the nail heads and cut the remaining yarn off. Repeat and complete all letters on your sign.

Make your own body scrub at home with things you already have in the pantry! Ingredients 2 cups brown sugar 1 cup solid (soft but not liquid) coconut oil Extra additions if wanted 2-3 drops (vanilla extract, essential oils, etc.)

Instructions Whip together the sugar, oil, and any extra additions until the mixture looks creamy and resembles loose cookie dough. You may use a food processor, but don't let it process too long or the coconut oil will melt and the mixture will separate. If this happens, just put it in the freezer for a few minutes to solidify and mix again. Store in an airtight container. Lasts for a couple weeks. Stir before using if it becomes separated.

Supplies for pulled string art: liquid watercolours small jars or cups string, cut into 18 inch pieces printer paper Something to cover your work area

What to do: 1.Pour your watercolours into the small jars and plop one string in each jar leaving about two inches hanging over the edge to hold onto.b 2. Choose your first colour, make sure the string is coated in paint, and pull it out of the jar. You’ll want to drag it through your finger and thumb to scrape off the excess watercolours- you might want to wear gloves for this part. 3. Arrange the string on your paper. You can make loops, squiggles, whatever you want. There’s no wrong way! 4. Carefully hold the paper with your one hand and pull the string gently and slowly off the paper with the other hand. 5. Repeat doing this as many times on your piece of paper as you would like with all of the amazing colours!

Spring is Here! LET'S WELCOME THE BIRDS HOME WITH THEIR VERY OWN BIRD BATH! What you will need: An empty hanging planter A medium-size terracotta pot A medium-size terracotta saucer Paint Plants to fill your hanging planter 1. The base of this extraordinary DIY birdbath is an ordinary hanging planter. In the centre, simply set in a terracotta pot or any old planting pot upside down so the bottom of the pot is facing up. This will be the support for the saucer. 2. Fill the remaining space around the pot with soil and plants. 3. Take the medium-size terracotta saucer and decorate it as you would like with paint. Be sure to seal the paint with a clear coat to ensure the paint stays. 4. Finally set the saucer on top of the terracotta pot. If you would like to add stability, secure it with hot glue, hang it, fill with water, and wait for the birds to discover it!

Materials: Pine Cone ~ 8-10 inch piece of string, twine, yarn or ribbon ~ a butter knife or spreader ~ a shallow dish or pie plate ~ Peanut Butter (any brand or type of peanut butter can be used, either crunchy or smooth; it can be past its best by date) If peanut butter is not available, bsuet, lard, or vegetable shortening is also suitable. Optional: Birdseed (any variety will work)

Making the feeder: Tie the string or twine around the feeder. The top of the string can be left open to tie it to a branch for hanging. Use the knife or spreader to coat the cone with a layer of peanut butter, as thick or thin as desired. Press some peanut butter between the rows of scales, filling in larger gaps. Once the cone is completely coated with peanut butter, roll it in the birdseed in the shallow dish, pressing lightly to keep the seed adhered to the cone. If you want to make multiple pine cone bird feeders at once but don't want to hang them out simultaneously, they can easily be frozen for several weeks. The feeders do not need to be thawed before hanging. This is a simple feeder that can be hung almost anywhere, but it will do best in a cool, shaded area or else it may grow soft or melt.

Paper Weaving Homemade Checkers
