DRIVEN TO ADVENTURE

There are numerous opportunities to explore both on and off-road, including these examples and the nearby off-road parks including Hollerwood and Leatherwood.

THE DANIEL BOONE BACKCOUNTRY BYWAY The Daniel Boone Backcountry Byway (DBBB) is a moderately difficult, high clearance route for licensed, street legal 4WD vehicles. It utilizes historic county roads around the Red River Gorge and Daniel Boone National Forest. It contains terrain surfaces varying between one third gravel, one third trail, and one third asphalt.

RED RIVER GORGE SCENIC BYWAY

You can download an official DBBB map from Cartotracks and use it on Avenza for real-time location and the latest route versions.

“Starting from Stanton and heading west along the Byway on State Route 11 , drive into the Daniel Boone National Forest. Marvel at the sights of the Red River as you travel along the byway. Soon after you turn onto State Route 77, you’ll pass under the Nada Tunnel. The Nada Tunnel was built for the Dana Lumber Company between 1910 and 1911, and the solid limestone had been blown out with dynamite.

The DBBB is located in the Red River Gorge area of Eastern Kentucky and is comprised of a trail system that works its way through Powell, Estill, Lee, Wolfe, and Menifee Counties. - DBBB website

As you turn onto State Route 715, you’ll encounter the Red River Gorge Geological Area. Here, you can discover the spectacular rock features, including sandstone arches and towering cliffs that attract thousands of viewers each year. Here, visitors can enjoy year round hiking, camping, canoeing, and wildlife viewing alongside other recreational activities. Just a few bends from the Red River Gorge Geological Area, you’ll find the Gladie Visitor Center, where you can learn about the cultural heritage, unique resources and spectacular geology found within the boundaries of the Red River Gorge Geological Area and Clifty Wilderness. Climb up to the Sky Bridge, a great place to stop for a picnic.

KENTUCKY ADVENTURE TOUR

The byway then continues to wind through the Kentucky mountains. Follow State Route 402 up to Slade before traveling south on State Route 11 to Zachariah. There are many options to stop and hike along the way. While in Zachariah check out the natural beauty of the Torrent Falls and try out an old Italian climbing style, the Via Ferrata, to get a new view of the falls. While in Zachariah, stop at a local restaurant for some farm to table fare.

A thrilling 1,000-mile self-guided loop featuring dirt, gravel, and paved paths around eastern Kentucky, designed for street-legal dual-sport motorcycles and 4x4 vehicles. This route combines 1,000 miles of unpaved and paved roads, trails, meandering through central and southeastern Kentucky, while also reaching into parts of West Virginia and Tennessee.

The Kentucky Adventure Tour (KAT) offers a free, GPS-guided experience through southeastern Kentucky and its neighboring states. Basic knowledge of GPS or GPS applications is necessary for navigation. Laurel County showcases the Kentucky Adventure Trail, which boasts stunning landmarks such as the Battle of Camp Wildcat Mountain, the Twin Arches, various creek crossings, and Laurel River Lake. Experience a mix of paved, gravel, and dirt roads within the picturesque Daniel Boone National Forest. You'll find convenient access to shops, restaurants, and overnight accommodations, including hotels, short-term rentals, and camping options. Learn more on YouTube or join the Kentucky Adventure Tour group on Facebook.

The route begins in Stanton on State Highway 11 and heads east. Instead of continuing straight on State Highway 11, visitors will make a loop following the Red River using State Highways 77, 715, and 402 before rejoining State Highway 11. The route follows State Highway 11 until its termination point in Zachariah.

CONVOY ETIQUETTE

Photo by Craig Bourland When traveling in a convoy of off-road 4x4 vehicles, it's important to follow basic etiquette to ensure safety, efficiency, and a positive experience for everyone involved.

Anita R. Vance Photography

1. Pre-Trip Planning Communication: Establish a group chat or use radios for communication during the trip. Meeting Points: Decide on a specific meeting point and time to avoid delays. 2. Formation and Spacing Adequate Spacing: Keep a safe distance between vehicles to allow for adequate reaction time in case of obstacles or emergencies. Don’t leave the vehicle behind you behind! It’s ok to wait. 3. Pace and Speed Consistent Pace: Set a comfortable pace that accommodates the slowest vehicle. Signal Changes: Use hand signals or radios to indicate turns, stops, or speed changes. 4. Trail Etiquette Right of Way: Yield to larger vehicles or those in a more precarious position. If you encounter oncoming traffic, the vehicle going uphill typically has the right of way. Stay on Trails: Stick to designated trails to minimize impact and avoid getting lost. 5. Obstacles and Recovery Assist When Needed: Be prepared to help fellow convoy members with any difficulties, such as getting stuck or needing repairs. Clear Communication: If you encounter an obstacle, communicate clearly about the best approach and ensure everyone is aware of any potential hazards. 6. Breaks and Stops Regular Breaks: Schedule regular breaks for food, fuel, and rest, ensuring everyone stays hydrated and alert. Group Gatherings: When stopping, gather to discuss the next leg of the journey or any concerns. 7. Tread Lightly Pack Out Trash: Ensure that everyone in the group packs out all trash and waste. Respect Nature: Stay on marked paths and respect wildlife and vegetation. 8. Emergency Procedures Emergency Contacts: Share emergency contact information and agree on a plan in case someone gets lost or injured. First Aid Kit: Make sure someone has a first aid kit and knows how to use it. 9. Respect Local Regulations Know the Rules: Familiarize yourself with local laws and regulations regarding off-roading, including permits, speed limits, and designated areas. 10. Have Fun! Enjoy the Experience: Keep the atmosphere positive, encourage camaraderie, and make sure everyone has a great time! By following these basic convoy etiquette guidelines, you can help ensure a safe and enjoyable offroading experience for everyone involved.
