GOODBYE, WINTER

SNOWBIRDING AS A DIGITAL NOMAD

I didn’t expect to become a snowbird this winter, but here we are— living out of our new TCTeardrops Terrain camper, chasing sunlight, and avoiding the Midwest cold like it’s out to get us. In early November we officially sold our house, wrapped up the last of the loose ends, and lingered in the region just long enough to celebrate Thanksgiving. The timing couldn’t have been tighter. As soon as we pointed the truck south, that Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm barreled across the Midwest like a reminder of everything we were running from. For once, we outran it.

Texas greeted us with the kind of cold rain that soaks straight through your jacket and into your bones. We’d imagined sunny skies and warm breezes—classic snowbird dreams—but instead found ourselves hopping between campsites with the heater working overtime. Still, there’s something kind of wonderful about wandering through strange weather in a new place. We chased the promise of better conditions and eventually coasted down to Padre Island, where the air finally remembered it was supposed to feel like winter on vacation.

From there we headed west, trading Gulf winds for desert horizons.

Now we’re settled into southern New Mexico, soaking up sunny days, big skies, and enough warmth to thaw out the last memories of Illinois ice. It feels good to slow down a little, breathe a little deeper, and remember that this nomadic stretch was exactly what we’d hoped for.

Arizona is next on the itinerary, and after that we’ll aim the rig back toward the cold for our appearance at the Chicago Auto Show in February. It’ll be a jolt, going from desert sun back into winter, but that’s the rhythm we chose this year: roam where it’s warm, return when there’s work to do, and savor the strange, beautiful inbetween. For now, though, we’re leaning all the way into snowbird life—coffee in hand, dogs at our feet, wandering far enough south that frostbite isn’t part of the daily conversation.

I enjoy spending time with my three grandchildren, I have two three yr olds and a one year old. Our first was born while I was on the Rebelle the first time. Hitting the trails and taking pictures of beautiful natural flowers, when I see them, is a favorite of mine, or any odd shaped trees.

A Tradition Continues The Wisconsin Overland Christmas Tree Hunt and Campout wrapped up in true Northwoods fashion this year—cold, quiet, and full of the kind of memories that only come from a handful of hardy souls showing up anyway. The overnight campout drew just a small group willing to brave the temps, but that didn’t stop anyone from settling into the stillness of winter woods and enjoying the kind of camaraderie that only happens around a fire when the air is crisp and the stars feel close enough to touch.

Nate kept us entertained with coffee-fueled meetup live streams.

Saturday brought a much livelier scene as more trucks rolled into Wolf River Roots for the drivers meeting, hands wrapped around hot coffee while folks caught up and shook off the chill. Nate from the GoGoGoodwins kept the energy high with some live trail-side broadcasts, capturing the excitement and giving everyone a taste of the adventure as it unfolded. The trail ride itself delivered exactly what a winter outing should: beautiful scenery, a few spontaneous opportunities to practice recovery skills, and even an impromptu trail repair or two that reminded everyone why traveling with good people matters.

A special apology goes out to the Griswolds for shamelessly borrowing their iconic station wagon silhouette for the stickers tucked into the goody bags—some traditions are too fun not to continue. And while the official purpose was to harvest Christmas trees, it’s entirely possible that more Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes were consumed than actual evergreens were strapped to roof racks. Maybe that’s just part of the charm of this annual ride: come for the trees, stay for the laughs, and leave with a full heart (and probably too much frosting).
