The Journey Is Part of the Gift

Finding the spirit of the holidays along the road less traveled The holiday season has a way of bringing us back to what matters most. Family, friends, familiar traditions, and the simple joy of being together. For many of us, getting there means packing up the vehicle, checking the weather, and hitting the road. And for those of us who love overlanding, the journey is often just as memorable as the destination. There's something special about traveling during the holiday season. Small towns dressed in Christmas lights, snow-covered forests, quiet backroads, and the welcome sight of a warm fire at the end of a long day. Even familiar places seem a little different this time of year. Of course, not every journey goes according to plan. Roads close, weather changes, equipment fails, and sometimes the place we intended to spend the night isn't where we end up. But those unexpected moments often become the stories we tell for years afterward. As a kid, my family would go to a Christmas Eve celebration at my dad’s mom’s place. It was only a 30 minute ride but we would take the backroads and “Over the River and Through the Woods” would play in my head as we drove past the farms and forests on our way. I loved that ride- the anticipation, the snow, the Christmas lights shining across snowy fields... those were some of my favorite childhood memories.
A long tradition of travel Travel has long been woven into the Christmas story itself. Mary and Joseph journeyed to Bethlehem under circumstances far more difficult than anything we'd consider an adventure. Their story offers a quiet reminder that some of life's most meaningful moments happen in unexpected places, far from the comforts of home.
Maybe it’s a reach on my part but the holidays and overlanding fit together so naturally, IMHO.. Both remind us that what matters most isn't necessarily what we have, but who we share our experiences with. Think about the memories that stay with you long after an adventure ends. The laughter around a campfire. A meal shared with new friends. The stranger who stopped to help when you were stuck (and then became a new friend!) The twinkling lights across the snow at dusk.... Those are the things that make a journey worthwhile.
Carrying the gifts of the holidays on your journey into the new year As we fill our shopping carts and search for the perfect gifts this season, it's worth remembering that some of the best things we can give don't come in a box. An invitation to join an adventure, the gift of our time, a helping hand, or an opportunity to introduce someone to the outdoors can mean more than the latest piece of gear. And there's something else worth carrying into the new year: gratitude. For the public lands we're privileged to explore, the volunteers who care for our trails, the businesses that support our community, and the people who make every adventure a little richer. A million thank yous! Wherever the road takes you this holiday season, take time to enjoy the journey. Explore somewhere new, revisit a favorite place, share what you have, and make room for the people who matter. Why? Because years from now, we may not remember every gift we received, but we'll remember the places we went, the people we met, and the moments we shared along the way. Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and happy trails from Cindy, Chad, Daisy and Rayne of Northology Adventures.

Gifts for the camp cook
There's something special about gathering around a campfire when the air is crisp and the days are short. Whether you're spending the holidays on the road, planning a winter camping trip, or just looking for an excuse to cook outdoors, these easy recipes and cooking gear reccomendations bring a little seasonal cheer to the campsite.
Easy Dutch Oven Cinnamon Rolls Jason Letcher’s cinnamon rolls at camp-delish! Note: the recipe below is my cheat method! Ingredients: 1 tube refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing 1 tablespoon butter Optional: chopped pecans, dried cranberries or orange zest
Lodge Cast Iron Double Dutch Oven- Pot and Skillet Combo If you’ve never woken up to the smell of cinnamon rolls baking on the coals on a crisp morning, you are missing out. This 5qt combo is affordable and you know that the Lodge brand is famous for quality cast-iron products.
Directions: Grease your Dutch oven with butter and place the cinnamon rolls inside, making sure to leave room for them to expand. Cover and bake over coals arranged for approximately 350°F, with more coals on the lid than beneath the pot. Check the rolls after 15 minutes and continue until fully baked and golden brown. Remove from heat and drizzle with icing and toppings, if desired. Camp kitchen gift pairing: A cast iron Dutch oven, heat-resistant gloves or a oven lid lifter.
Travoca Rigel Dual Zone eCooler
Jetboil Genesis Basecamp Stove This one is on our list! The folks we know who have one rave about it, and we think this is the answer to keeping camp cooking easy, compact and efficient. We love the fact that the burners fold and nest inside cook pot to save space when packing and it all fits into carrying case
Keeping food fresh on the road is so important. The Travoca Rigel Dual Zone eCooler brings convenience and rugged style to your next adventure. With independent fridge and freezer zones, advanced insulation, and Bluetooth temperature control, it keeps food fresh without the hassle of ice. Its durable steel construction, versatile lid, and optional modular accessories make it a great addition to any overlanding or camping setup. Available in 25L, 35L, 45L, and 60L sizes.
Clean Camp Dish Wipes Ugh, I hate doing dishes and even hate it more at camp. We have used a variety of rinse-free, pre-moistnend dish wipes and these are our favorite: packable, handy and disposable.
XL Square Cast Iron Pie Iron Original By Rome It has come to our attention that not everyone knows what a pudgie pie is, and not everyone agrees on what they are called! A pudgie pie is a delicious campfire treat made by sandwiching sweet or savory fillings between two slices of buttered bread and toasting them in a cast iron pie iron over hot coals. From classic pizza fillings to gooey fruit pies, the possibilities are endless, making pudgie pies a fun and easy favorite for campers of all ages. One of our favorite Overland the Red memories is Mel busting out the pie iron and making cherry pies for all of us gathered around the campfire after a long day on the trails. You, too can make some delicious memories in 2027!
Our friends at GoGoGoodwins love their Rigel.
UCO Utility Spork 3-in-1 Combo We have given these away at events in goody bags and it’s the one thing people are crazy for. They are durable and nest together making them packable and useful. We have about a dozen stashed in the camper and truck! Great for stocking stuffers!

A Wisconsin Overland Christmas Tree Hunt
Two-track, Trees and Winter Camping With Wisconsin Overland Every December, we gather in northern Wisconsin for a holiday tradition that's a little different from your typical trip to the Christmas tree lot. The Wisconsin Overland Christmas Tree Hunt combines a day of trail riding in the Nicolet National Forest with camping, camaraderie, and a great big bonfire. And here's the funny part: very few people actually come home with a Christmas tree. The original idea was simple enough. Gather some friends, head into the national forest, and harvest a Christmas tree with the proper permit. It's a great excuse to explore the forest in early winter, when the familiar roads and trails take on a whole different character. But over the years, the tree hunt has become much more about the gathering than the trees. Usually only one or two participants actually purchase a permit and bring home a tree. The rest of us? We're perfectly happy to spend the day exploring the Nicolet, enjoying the scenery, breaking axle shafts and catching up with friends.
Winter Camping, With a Safety Net One of the things we love about this gathering is that it gives folks an opportunity to try winter camping without committing to a remote, coldweather expedition. We host the event at Dad's place, where there's room to set up camp and test your winter gear. There’s also plenty of firewood for the giant boulder fire pit onsite and a deluxe outhouse around the back. Whether you're experimenting with a diesel heater, figuring out how to keep your water from freezing, or wondering if your sleeping bag is warm enough, it's a chance to learn in a friendly, low-pressure environment. If things go sideways, you can always bail to the house where you can throw a sleeping bag on the couch or the floor and warm up. That safety net makes it a particularly good opportunity for people who are curious about winter camping but haven't quite worked up the nerve to try it. There's plenty to learn from others, and no shame in heading indoors if your setup isn't quite up to the challenge.
The Tree Hunt Trail Ride Of course, the main attraction is the trail ride on Saturday. We head to Wolf River Roots for a driver’s meeting, some swag and to grab a coffe and scone for the road. Sometimes we split up into groups who want to look for a tree and those who want a mild or a rowdy trail ride. It’s a great opportunity to also see wildlife, explore new campsites and just enjoy the beauty of the woods while playing Radio Chatter Game. Once we've spent the day exploring forest roads, we head back to Dad's place for the evening. Everyone gathers around the bonfire, swapping trail stories and enjoying the kind of easy conversation that happens when nobody's in a hurry to be anywhere else. Dad genuinely loves hosting the gathering, and that makes it even more special. There's something wonderful about opening up a little piece of home to a community of people who share a love of adventure. There aren't elaborate activities or a packed schedule. Just friends, trucks, a day in the woods, and a fire big enough to keep everyone gathered around long after dark.
A Tradition Worth Preserving The Wisconsin Overland Christmas Tree Hunt obvioulsy isn't really about finding the perfect tree. It's about getting out on the trails and having fun. It's an excuse to get outside when many people have already put their camping gear away for the year. It's a chance to introduce someone to winter camping, explore familiar places in a different season, and strengthen friendships. And if somebody actually brings home a Christmas tree? Well, that's a bonus. The best holiday traditions are the simplest ones. A long and winding forest road, a few good friends, a warm fire, and a place to gather. That's our kind of Christmas celebration.
Join our commumity! Find Wisconsin Overland on Facebook and follow us on Instagram. We host meetups, campouts and stewardship events throughout the northwoods of Wisconsin.

the gift of adventure The best gifts aren't always things.
Every holiday season, we search for the perfect gifts for the people we love. We browse the latest gear, compare gadgets, and look for something that will bring a smile on Christmas morning. But some of the most memorable gifts don't come wrapped in paper or tucked beneath a tree. They're experiences. Think back on your favorite adventures. Chances are, you remember the people you were with, the places you explored, and the unexpected moments along the way more vividly than the equipment you brought along. A weekend camping trip, a guided trail ride, an off-road driving course, or tickets to an adventure event can become a memory that lasts for years. Better yet, these gifts often inspire something we could all use a little more of: time spent outdoors with those who matter most.
Give Something to Look Forward To
exploring somewhere new. For families, a rafting trip, a day of mountain biking, or a night spent stargazing can introduce a whole new generation to the joys of outdoor recreation. One of the wonderful things about giving an experience is the anticipation. A gift opened in December might become an adventure in May, July, or September. There's time to plan, prepare, dream about the destination, and look forward to the journey.

Give the Gift of Confidence For someone who's new to overlanding or offroading, an educational experience can be especially valuable. Learning how to navigate forest roads, recover a stuck vehicle, prepare for remote travel, or safely tackle challenging terrain builds confidence that lasts long after the class is over with. For those who already have a garage full of gear, a new skill or experience might be exactly what they didn't know they needed. Discover 4x4 Adventures Courses Discover 4x4 Adventures is dedicated to providing professional 4x4 training classes and adventure trips emphasizing safety and responsible driving. Adventure Is Better Shared At Northology Adventures, we've seen firsthand how a single event can turn strangers into lifelong friends. People arrive from different places, with different vehicles and levels of experience, but they share a common curiosity about the world beyond the pavement. By the end of the weekend, they've shared meals, tackled trails, swapped stories around the campfire, and made plans to meet again.
That's the real value of giving an adventure. For families, you're not simply purchasing admission to an event or just reserving a campsite. You're creating an opportunity for discovery, growth, and memories. When I think about growing up, the most vivid memories are the adventures we took as a family outdoors. Our 2027 Northology event calendar offers plenty of opportunities to do just that, from the Keweenaw Overland Adventure Retreat and Midwest Women's Offroad Weekend to Overland the Red, Wisconsin Fall 4x4 Fest, and our new Overland Summer Camp. Watch for our events calendar post coming up on our Black Friday for updates, or join our Patreon family for early access and exclusive pre-Black Friday discounts, The Chicago Auto Show ,CAS’s Overlanding Chicago exhibit gives you the chance to explore displays, demos and educational opportunities while connecting with the vehicles and gear that make it possible to explore a life outside the urban jungle. Wrap Up a Memory If you're giving an experience this holiday season, have a little fun with the presentation. Tuck event tickets into a new trail guide, pair a camping reservation with a favorite camp mug, or create a homemade certificate promising a weekend adventure together. The gift doesn't have to be expensive to be meaningful. Long after the decorations have been packed away and the wrapping paper recycled, the anticipation of a new adventure will remain. When that adventure finally arrives, the memories become the most treasured gift of all. This holiday season, give them somewhere to go, something to discover, and someone to share it with.
