Boardman Marina Park now offers miniature golf course It’s taken three years to plan and develop, but Boardman Park & Recreation District can now boast of their own miniature golf course that is open to the public!

Three years ago, Summer Recreation Director Blaine Ganvoa and Program Director Jamie Sepulveda started the project by constructing one hole and greens out of treated plywood. It went together so well, that Ganvoa went ahead and drew up the plans for eight more holes and greens. Ganvoa

and Kayla Nelson completed the plywood portion of the other eight holes. The project came to completion this summer with the assistance of seven Oregon Youth Conservation Corps (OYCC) workers supervised by Gene VanGorder.

They leveled and prepped the land, which is located at the triangle of the main park road as it splits to the day use and boat launch areas.

Then the crew helped Ganvoa construct each hole, glued outdoor carpet as grass into the greens ar-

eas, built a fence and landscaped the area.

The nine-hole course is open, but awaits the signage telling the public the cost ($5.00 for 9 holes, $0.50 more for the second ball and 9 more holes) and where to pay and receive your putter and golf balls.

The campground check-in booth is the spot to stop; there are 30 putters of three different sizes plus golf balls of all colors. The course is open to play from 8:00 am to dusk (about 8:00 pm).

Mark your calendars for Rollin’ on the River September 21st On September 21, 2013, the Boardman Kiwanis are hosting the “5 TH” annual ROLLIN’ on the RIVER event. Started in September 2009, as a joint venture between the Boardman Chamber of Commerce and the Boardman Kiwanis, this event was created to “establish an annual event in Boardman, Oregon that provides entertainment and libations to people from all over the Columbia Basin. The event has been a success, showing growth in attendance each year.

This year offers three bands; extended hours from 2 pm to 9 pm; an actual dance floor; increased car show display; and wine & beer tasting from local venues. Food will be available for purchase. So, mark your calendars and come on down to the Marina on Saturday, September 21, 2013 between the hours of 2 pm and 9 pm and join in the fun !

Tickets are $20.00 each and you must be 21 years of age to attend.

Proceeds from this event go towards Community service projects.

BEO’s employees, customers, & community members donated an abundance of supplies. Backpacks and supplies were then transported to the grade schools or district offices for distribution, as needed.

Drawings were also held for grade school students at each branch for the chance to win backpacks filled with supplies.

IMESD to offer free hearing screenings to students PENDLETON – The InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) will provide free hearing screenings to public elementary school students through November.

Hearing screenings are conducted annually by the IMESD’s Audiology Department for public school students in Umatilla, Morrow and Union counties, and is cooperatively sponsored by local school districts. Students to be screened include nearly 4,000 kindergarten, first and third grade students, new students to a county, and parent/ teacher/principal referrals of students in other grades. Children who fail the initial screening will be re-screened within a three-week period.

Screenings began earlier this week and will continue through November.

Parents who do not want their child’s hearing to be screened should notify their child’s school as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding the hearing screening program, please contact your local school principal or the IMESD Audiology Department at 541-9663140.

The Morrow County screening schedule is as follows: AC Houghton, Wednesday, September 11; Irrigon Elementary, Wednesday, September 11; Ione, Thursday, September 12; Heppner, Thursday, September 12; Sam Boardman, Wednesday, October 16; Windy River, Wednesday, October 16.

Boardman Buzzzzzzzz Hello North Morrow County, September is here, that means it is time for Rollin’ on the River! I hope you are all planning to attend.

I know the Kiwanis has worked really hard to make the 5th Annual

This summer went really fast, of course the older I get the faster they go!

But with the opening of the SAGE Center, my sister and her husband from Maryland coming to visit for 10 days, my son from Missouri coming for 5 days, then I finished off my company with my parents visiting me from Texas for almost 3

So, mark your calendar for Wednesday, September 18 and join us at the SAGE Center at 7:30 am for breakfast and a great program presented by The Port of Morrow, Boardman Park District, The Columbia River Community Health District and Chamber’s Economic Development Committee. The Port will be discussing their recently completed economic impact study and strategic plan, and we will share the results of the recently completed surveys from the Clinic, the Park, and the Chamber.

This should be an informative and fun meeting. Sunrise Café will cater the breakfast. Please RSVP by Monday, September 16, the cost is $10.00 per person.

Chamber Board Elections In November, the Boardman Chamber membership will elect new board members.

Don Drayton and Julie Gisi will be retiring from the board, as they have served for the last six years. They have been a huge asset to the chamber and they will be missed.

To be considered as a potential nominee, please contact the Chamber. Board members are dedicated individuals of the chamber who are willing to attend board meetings, be part of special committees and other activities sponsored by the chamber. The terms are three years with the option of running for a second term. If you have any questions or need anything else, please let us know. The Chamber board meetings are the second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 am.

Boardman Visitors Guide and Membership Directory It is that time of year! We are starting to make plans for the new visitors guide. Do you have any ideas that you would like to share with us to make it an even better publication for Boardman? We won’t even make you join a committee, you can just send in your thoughts and ideas! Career Day 2013 The Riverside High School Career Day will be on Wednesday, October 16. Local businesses will be receiving a letter this week asking that you partner with an RHS student for a job shadow experience. This is an excellent opportunity to introduce students to a variety of career and job opportunities.

The students spend the morning with their selected business observing daily operations and activities. Unlike a field trip, where the student simply visits the business, job shadows are structured so that the students play an active role with hands on learning experiences.

The sponsoring businesses and students then meet at the Port of Morrow for the monthly Chamber luncheon (cost is $10.00 per person). The employer first introduces their student and then the students share their job shadowing experience.

If you don’t receive your career day packet from the chamber by Friday, please contact us and we will get you a packet.

Chamber Annual Banquet It is time to start planning for the Boardman Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards Banquet! It is scheduled for Friday, February 7 and will be held at the SAGE Center this year.

Of course we are really excited here at the chamber office with our new addition! Amber and Kory Killingbeck had a beautiful baby girl, Luella Nichol on Saturday, August 24. She weighed in

at 7 lbs 12 oz and was 19". We will certainly miss Amber while she is out on maternity leave, but I seriously doubt she is missing us much!!!!

I certainly am looking forward to some beautiful fall weather. I have had a bit too much summer for my taste! Three days of 80 is enough for me!

Our favorite game is called ‘The Farming Game’, this game is like monopoly based in the farming world and it was developed based on farms in Yakima Valley. The Farming Game is a heavily chance dependent game, and thus the winner is usually determined by luck. However, a player can increase his or her chances of winning by knowing which crops are more likely to be profitable and use this information to make lucrative trades with other players.

So bring the kids to tour the SAGE Center and then do some shopping in the Store.

City addresses debris During the course of this summer, several large vacant lots have been subjected to fires which threatened fences and structures on adjacent properties. As the fire fuel load is both high and dry this year, the City Council decided to reduce the fire exposure of the adjacent property owners. On the 18th of June, the Boardman City Council approved Ordinance 4-2013, changing the language of Boardman Municipal Code Chapter 8.04 – Nuisances, to address large lot fire hazards where a structural exposure is present. Structural exposure includes fences of adjacent property owners. The language requires a fire break of 20 feet, in width, be mowed to reduce the fire exposure risk for adjacent property owners.

In early August, letters were sent to 64 property owners, on a total of 81 lots, falling under the new Municipal Code language. As of this date, many lots have complied with the new ordinance language; however, many more lots have experienced difficulty in compliance due to yard debris piles, and other trash such as used furniture, appliances and equipment, on their property, appearing to

come from the adjacent property owners. This is a violation of Boardman Municipal Code and also classified as “Offensive littering” under State Law. In many instances, these unattended piles of grass clippings, leaves and trees/brush significantly add to the fire fuel load and also attract animals such as mice, skunks, raccoons and badgers as a habitat. Some of the identified yard debris piles are as tall as 6-8 feet.

There are several options to dealing with yard debris: 1) A mulching mower returns grass clippings to the yard and maintains the nutrients to the yard with the decomposition of the clippings building the soils in the yard.

2) Haul the yard debris to the North Morrow County Transfer Station located off of Bombing Range Rd at the I-84/US 730 interchange.

3) Obtain a separate garbage container during the months you generally have yard waste. This option would cost $11/month.

Offensive littering on someone else’s property is NOT an acceptable option!

Preview of Columbia River Power Marathon/ Half/Ultra/Relay & 8k Saturday, September 21 The Columbia River Power Marathon has grown into a five event fitness festival for runners and walkers of all ages and abilities: 8K Walk/Run, Half Marathon Walk/Run, Marathon, Ultra and Marathon Relay. Start and finish will be by the Desert River Inn in Umatilla, Oregon. From the start, participants descend to the waterfront and traverse the Columbia River to Washington via McNary Dam. Marathon day - Saturday, September 21, 2013 is the only time each year that the dam is open to the public. Register at www.columbiarivermarathon.com There were 355 participants in 2012.

Participants came from all over the United States. New York, Tennessee, Hawaii, Indiana, Alaska and many in between. A fantastic potato bar, live music, massage station, great prizes, FUN aid stations and great conversations will greet participants in the Expo area!

Many participants form teams and bring their own cheerleaders and make a day of it here in Eastern Oregon. New this year will be a beer garden in the court yard. Join

in on the fun and support our local youth cross country team.

The route: This is a destination Marathon!

Once in Washington after crossing McNary Dam, the route meanders upon the basalt bluffs overlooking the river. At 2.5 miles, 8K runners & walkers turn around and retrace their tracks back to the finish line by Big River Golf Course on Willamette Ave. Marathoners, Half Marathoners, and Relay participants continue to Plymouth, Washington before returning to Oregon across the I82/US 395 foot bridge. Upon arrival in Oregon, the route continues next to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer Nature Trails. From the nature trails the course continues past the dock at the Port of Umatilla and drops into

McNary Beach Park. At this juncture, Half Marathoners climb back to the finish while the marathoners continue for five miles and Ultra will continue along the scenic Columbia River, along the earthen Lewis and Clark Trail to Hatrock

State Park . After looping past Hatrock, participants return to McNary Beach Park on the Lewis and Clark Trail before ascending to the finish.

Trail Apartments in Boardman undergoing rehabilitation project Boardman, Oregon (September 3rd, 2013) - The Housing Authority of the County of Umatilla and CASA of Oregon are pleased to announce the Trail Apartments in Boardman, Oregon has begun the renovation work of the low-income family housing project.

Rehabilitation of the Trail Apartments, a 24 unit affordable housing complex nestled between Blue Mountain Community College and Riverside Jr./Sr. High School, began on August 1st and completion is expected by February 2014.

Renovations of the 30 year old complex are focused on improving the exteriors of buildings and introducing a complement of sustainability features including energy efficient heating, cooling, and lighting; water saving plumbing fixtures; natural day-lighting and passive ventilations; water efficient irrigation and drought tolerant, native landscaping. A new play area and community meeting

room will be added to the complex, providing a gathering place for families.

The Housing Authority of the County of Umatilla now owns and operates the project, whose aim is to address increased demand for affordable housing in Boardman.

1. Service your heating system: As much as 80 percent of emergency calls answered by heating specialists are the result of improper maintenance. Schedule an appointment soon so you can beat the rush and help avoid a breakdown in the middle of a freeze.

2. Check and replace filters: Fall is also the perfect time to check your furnace filters and replace if necessary. Efficient operation distributes heat better and cuts your energy costs. Plus, it’s an inexpensive and easy task.

3. Protect your pipes: Have you plumbing looked at and water lines

insulated. Cleaning all lines can help remove clogs. Clogs cause back ups, which can freeze, then cause the weakening of pipes and bursting. Wrap your pipes with insulation designed for plumbing. In many situations, insulation will be all you need to protect your pipes.

4. Drain water from your water heater: You can improve your water heater’s efficiency by 50 percent by draining sediment build up from the holding tank.

6. Seal drafts: Caulk, seal and weather-strip where drafts are detected. Walk through your home with a lit stick of incense or a candle.

Drafts will pull the smoke that direction, making it easier to determine where the cold air is seeping in.

7. Schedule a chimney sweep: Creosote build-up can lead to a chimney fire.Have your chimney inspected at least once a year; more often if you use it regularly.

8. Check your gutters: Gutter blockage of dead leaves and other muck can cause serious water damage. If they are clogged, hire a professional for a cleaning. If they are not clogged, check again after the leaves have fallen.

9. Rake up the leaves: Fallen leaves will deprive your grass of crucial sunlight during the fall months. Leaves can also accumulate and get wet, leading to mold

growth and a breeding ground for pests.

Vehicle inspection: Summer travel can take a toll on your car. Schedule a maintenance check with your mechanic so it will be in good working order to endure the long winter months. If you haven’t packed your trunk with an emergency kit, now is the time.

Clean and store your outdoor furniture: This will help prevent rust and damage from freezing. If you store your outdoor furniture inside for the winter (which is recommended, if at all possible) allow for some airflow.

Encasing the furniture tightly in plastic could lead to moisture damage.

Properly discard or store paint, caulk or adhesives in a heated area to prevent them from freezing: Call your local hazardous material removal service for instructions on discarding products that could be toxic. Drain all gasoline containers, including lawn mowers

and other gasoline-powered tools.

Check your lighting: With dark days ahead, exterior lighting is very important. Check all your bulbs and consider using timers to turn lights on at dusk and off in the morning.

Employment Dept. works to improve customer service Salem – Wait times at the Employment Department Unemployment Insurance call centers have been extremely long.

“We recognize that many Oregonians calling our unemployment insurance center are experiencing long wait times,” David Gerstenfeld, assistant director for unemployment insurance programs said. “This is totally unacceptable to us. So, we took a long look at why this was occurring and what could be done to improve.”

Gerstenfeld said that Oregon is not alone in the challenge of serving the unemployed in a timely and efficient manner. Declining revenues from the U.S. Department of Labor since the end of the recession have caused many states to reconsider how services are provided.

“Some states have drastically reduced the number of hours their call centers are available to the public, and some states are eliminating their call centers altogether, opting for providing all services online,” Gerstenfeld said. “We are looking for alternatives that will actually increase service, while staying within our budgetary constraints.”

While the number of Oregonians receiving unemployment services has been steadily declining since the recession, Gerstenfeld said funding has also been falling.

In July 2013, Oregon made over 187,000 unemployment insurance benefit payments, 10% less than in July 2012. During that same time period, staffing levels in the unemployment insurance call center decreased by over 17%.

The Oregon Employment Department, Gerstenfeld said, considers the call centers to be a vital link for unemployed Oregonians.

Therefore, in order to improve the experience for claimants, the department has made several changes in staffing and processes.

• Matching staffing levels to better meet customer demand at peak call time throughout the week • Having staff from other parts of the Employment Department take on additional work to

help people contacting the call center • Enhancing the on-line experience • Providing more self-service tools for claimants in the near future.

The department is also asking Oregonians with an unemployment insurance claim to help reduce wait times: • Report a claim each week • Use the online and automated telephone systems Channeling Oregonians with an unemployment insurance claim to weekly reporting will enhance the overall service experience.

“Making these two changes will free up the phone lines for those who have an issue that requires they speak to a claims agent,” Gerstenfeld said.

Claimants can use the online claim system at www.WorkingInOregon.org/ocs to: • File an initial claim for benefits • File a weekly claim including entering work search activities • Check the status of their claim • Restart a claim • Check a claim balance • Update their address • Sign up for electronic deposit • And much more.

Another option is to use the weekly claim line (1-800-982-8920), to file a weekly claim for benefits, including reporting work search activities, by following simple voice prompts.

If during the claim filing process an issue is discovered, the department will send a notice to call the unemployment insurance call center for direct customer service.

“Using the online claim system or the weekly claim line is much faster than calling the unemployment insurance call center for assistance. Using one of these two automated systems will free call center phone lines for people who must have direct contact to receive service,” Gerstenfeld said.

Morrow County volunteers plan to build pavillion in Boardman Morrow County participants of the Ford Institute Leadership program have selected to build a pavilion on a popular Boardman beach. The Ford Leadership program is based on the belief that vital rural communities develop from a broad base of knowledgeable, skilled and motivated leaders.

Morrow County’s cohort has over 15 individuals from Boardman,

Irrigon and Heppner.

The Ford Leadership Program allows participants to select a project to benefit their community.

In April, the group selected to construct a pavilion and two shade pergolas in Boardman at Marker 40, a popular sandy beach located on the Columbia River in the Port of Morrow. The beach already has restrooms and a paved walking

trail. Participants have started the process of designing the structure and applying for grants to fund the project. As of July, the group hopes the pavilion will be ready for use in summer 2014.

The Pirates were snappily dressed in black uniforms and helmets. Coach Boor and his assistants looked cool in their Pirate Blue polo shirts. Younger siblings, parents, grandparents (even some like us without RHS grandchildren), and teachers, filed into the stands with great anticipation.

The stands erupted with so much applause, and whoops of joy, we might have thought we were in Corvallis! All too soon, 4th quarter was over and the Pirate Push ended. Final score: Corbett 41, Riverside Pirates 12, and nobody got hurt. Coach Boor has a long term plan to rebuild the Pirate Football Team. The 2nd annual Eastern Oregon Word Round-Up is set for Sept. 2729, 2013 at Tamastslikt Cultural Institute at the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation at Pendleton. Tamastslikt will offer free public admission to its museum the entire weekend. Admission to the Word Round-Up readings, lectures, programs and entertainment are also free. A fee of $25 is charged for 2-hour, hands-on workshops in creative writing.

The Word Round-Up celebrates a love of reading, writing and books and is sponsored by Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO). The event includes two full days of programs and workshops on publishing and writing, and a trade show, a book sale of quality used books, music performances, Native American dancing, and book art exhibit.

Word has it that Edgar Allan Poe, long deceased, will make an appearance as part of this year’s keynote evening presentation on Fri., Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. Poe will be portrayed by Hollywood actor Duffy Hudson, who will present a lively stage performance with brief readings from Poe’s works as he enacts the stories behind their development.

Following the Poe presentation, former Oregon Poet Laureate Lawson Fusao Inada will discuss poetry and its relevance for persons from all walks of life.

Inada is an emeritus professor of writing at Southern Oregon University in Ashland and the author of five books: Legends from Camp, Drawing the Line, In This Great Land of Freedom, Just Into/Nations and Before the War. He is the editor of the acclaimed Only What We Could Carry: The Japanese-American Internment Experience. Inada has won Poetry Fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts. A Guggenheim Fellowship recipient, he has been recognized at the White House as one of our nation’s most significant poets.

Inada is currently serving as the Chair for the National Steinbeck Center, a forum established to promote a community-wide celebration of literature in the tradition of John

Steinbeck.

Inada’s work has been the subject of a documentary titled “What It Means to Be Free: A Video about Poetry and Japanese-American Internment”.

On Sat., Sept. 28, evening keynote presenters for the Word Round-Up are author Molly Gloss and executive director of the Northwest Photography Archive, John Laursen.

Gloss’s novel The Jump-Off Creek was a finalist for the PEN/ Faulkner Award for American Fiction, and a winner of both the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award and the Oregon Book Award.

Her book The Dazzle of Day was named a New York Times Notable Book and was awarded the PEN Center West Fiction Prize.

The Hearts of Horses, published in 2007, is the novel of a young woman breaking horses for several

A full slate of other authors and writers will present programs and workshops at the Word Round-Up, including Eastern Oregon writers Pamela Steele, Bette Husted, Justin Quaempts, David Memmott, David Axelrod, Thomas Madden, Jodi Varon, Jack Lorts, Paty Jager and Rebekah Burcham.

Through Trees for America, everyone is encouraged to plant trees for the benefit of the environment and qualityof-life. With one million members, the Arbor Day Foundation is the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.

“Arizona cypress trees can be used as an ornamental tree, as a windbreak or privacy screen or as a living Christmas tree in your landscape,” said John Rosenow, founder and chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation.

“These trees will also add to the proud heritage of

Oregon’s 57 Tree City USA communities. For the last 36 years, Tree

City USA has supported effective urban forest management across Oregon, and planting these trees will enhance the state’s tree-planting tradition.”

The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting between October 15 and December 10. The 6to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge.

Planting instructions are enclosed with each shipment of trees.

New members of the Arbor Day Foundation will also receive The Tree Book, which includes information about tree planting and care.

Columbia River Enterprise Zone helps Morrow County charitable organizations The Columbia River Enterprise Zone (CREZ) is developing a list of charitable organizations to be given to new businesses locating in the Enterprise Zone who wish to make contributions in Morrow County. Enterprise Zone manager Carla McLane advises the list for organizations that have contacted her to be included on the list in hopes of receiving funding is beginning to grow. “I think we are going to end up with a nice long list,” McLane said.

When businesses locate in the CREZ they negotiate deals with the Board and pay fees in lieu of property taxes, which are lower than property taxes would be if they had not located in the enterprise zone.

The zone consists mainly of a 12-

square-mile area at the Port of Morrow in Boardman.

Companies will pay these negotiated fees to the CREZ over a period of up to 15 years, which will in turn distribute the funds. Businesses may donate part of these fees to charitable organizations that may include anything from city chambers of commerce to museums, and any other organization not politically or religiously oriented, the board has stated.

CREZ board members have stated they want the list to be as inclusive as possible and it will be limited only to organizations located in Morrow County. Anyone who wants their organization included can email McLane at cmclane@co.morrow.or.us, or call

her office at 541-922-4624.

“Just because you are on the list doesn’t mean you are going to get something,” said CREZ Board Chair Don Russell, “We want to make it as all inclusive as possible, but it is up to the businesses who participate to determine who they give their money to.”

So far the CREZ has deals lined up over the next 15 years that will bring in over $2.1 million, with more businesses and money to come.

Distribution of the majority of the funds will be decided by the CREZ board and given to taxing districts deemed by the board to be most affected by the businesses locating in the Boardman. An example would be fire and police services.

This would not have been possible without the ongoing support from local and area advertisers and

Boardman Chamber of Commerce. It’s been nip and tuck several times, as advertisers have fallen away and the North Morrow Times has struggled to bring in enough advertising dollars to cover the costs. Each issue is emailed to and printed by the East Oregonian. Thanks also go to Wayne Tyson, who picks up each issue in Hermiston, bundles the correct number of newspapers according to what the post office requires, and then drops off bundles to various retail and business owners in the area. he Boardman City Council has moved their regularly scheduled Tuesday, September 3, 2013 meeting to Tuesday, September 10, 2013. The City Council meeting will begin at 7pm at Boardman City Hall Council Chambers ltrusa International of Hermiston Scholarship. Each year in the fall and spring Altrusa International of Hermiston awards scholarships ranging from $300 to $1500. These scholarships are designed to help the student in the completion of post high school studies so they are better able to care for their families and themselves. Applicants must have completed at least 2/3 of their post high school education and must be residents of Western Umatilla County or North Morrow County, but may be studying elsewhere. Altrusa is now accepting applications for the Fall/ Winter term for the Linda Gilleese Memorial Educational Scholarship. Applications are available on the Hermiston Altrusa website, at the Hermiston Chamber of Commerce or BMCC. Completed applications must be postmarked no later than September 30, 2013.

Area libraries launch free auto repair, genealogy and historical record online services for local residents Interested in learning more about your family tree, past military or immigration records, census data, historical photos and maps, and much more?

Beginners and professional genealogists and researchers in eastern Oregon now have free access to Ancestry Library Edition and to HeritageQuest through subscriptions launched this week for several area public libraries.

Each service provides unprecedented, staggering amounts of information to help trace family histories and American culture.

An on-line Auto Repair Reference Center is now also available at no cost to area residents through several libraries. This on line database contains do-it-yourself repair and maintenance information on engines, brakes, transmissions, wiring and troubleshooting for over 37,000 domestic and imported vehicles from 1945 to the present.

Area mechanics and those looking to save money will be able to access the auto repair subscription at no charge from any internet connection by entering the barcode their library card.

Ancestry Library Edition is a subscription website that provides access to over five billion names in more than 23,000 database records in census data, vital records, directories, photos, and more from North America, the UK, Europe, Australia, and other countries.

Area residents will be able to search hundreds of millions of names from sources such as census data, vital records, ship-crossings, births, deaths, marriages, fam-

ily lineages, and other information spanning centuries of record-keeping across scores of countries and continents from Australia to Asia, Canada, Europe, and the U.S. Military collections deliver over 150 million records containing information often not found elsewhere; and includes U.S. records from the colonial to the Vietnam era. Multimedia collections deliver millions of files ranging from family and gravestone photos to postcards and newsreels.

HeritageQuest Online has 7,000 databases of information, including the digitized genealogy and local history collection, U.S. census data, the Revolutionary War Pension and Bounty Land Warrant Application Files, the Freedman’s Bank records and Private Relief Actions, and Memorials and Petitions spanning centuries.

Both Ancestry and HeritageQuest are designed for people who are either just beginning their family research or who after years of work are still uncovering their past.

Library patrons will be able to access HeritageQuest 24/7 by accessing the website and using the barcode from their library cards. A free passcode to the auto repair database is available from participating libraries, also allowing 24/7 access from any internet connection at home, work or on the go.

Ancestry is available via computers or wi-fi at the libraries and does not allow remote access.

The nonprofit Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO) was able to negotiate significantly reduced costs

for each participating library or district by serving as sponsor to bring the new services to the region.

All three database services are now offered to library patrons in Pendleton, Hermiston, Umatilla, Helix, Adams, Athena, Pilot Rock, Echo, Stanfield, Weston, MiltonFreewater, Ukiah, Boardman, Heppner, Irrigon La Grande, Condon, Ontario, and Hood River and Baker counties.

The new services are brought to these libraries through funding provided by the Umatilla County Special Library District, Oregon Trail Library District (OTLD), Baker Co. Library District, Hood River Library District, and participating individual libraries.

“We’re so pleased to bring these new services to so many libraries in the region through the LEO group buy,” said Marsha Richmond, OTLD director and LEO board chair.

“We’ve been working on expanding on line resources over the past few years in response to public demand. It’s extremely gratifying to see how the libraries and library districts stepped up with contributions to help make this happen for area residents.”

City of Boardman Noxious Weed Program a success The City of Boardmans Puncturevine Control Program has been dubbed a huge success with 600 bags of Puncturevine collected, the equivalent of 3000 pounds of the plant. This is the City’s fifth year running the program, with a budget of $600. The City provided the bags, and participants were paid $1 per filled bag. The City plans to burn the weeds before summer’s end.

Each year the City receives complaints of the plant growing along the bike path, sidewalks and curbs. The spiny bur or seed pod from the Puncturevine (Tribulus terrestris), also known as a “Goathead”, contains 20 seeds equipped with long sharp spines capable of puncturing a bike tire or a shoe.

The City’s Code Compliance Official Keri Jarmer said she could see

a big improvement along the City’s bike path, streets, and other public areas such as the walking path along the river. Many citizens participated in collecting the weed in the spirit of helping out their community. The City of Boardman appreciates all the participation in the program, and hopes to sponsor it again next spring. Morrow County Health District Seeks Interested Board of Director Candidates Morrow County Health District is seeking to identify individuals who are interested in serving on the Morrow County Health District Board.
