A company has quietly been in Boardman for over one year and now looks to expand. iPro Building Services, based in Wenatchee, Washington opened an office in Boardman’s old city hall building in August 2018. The Boardman office concentrates on professional cleaning services, primarily to the data servers located nearby. Quality Control officer Jessica Flagg says the company is looking to expand to other commercial properties. The company services include commercial cleaning, data center cleaning, complete floor and carpet services, medical facility cleaning, industrial facility cleaning, event cleaning, pressure washing, handyman services, construction cleanup and window cleaning. The company has a specialized team who does nothing but take care of their floor and carpet services. The team moves to the location that needs those services.

Boardman is the company’s first Oregon office. The company is privately owned by Edwin Eaton, and opened for business in 2013 with services in Southeast Washington, Idaho, and Oregon.

The Oregon team consists of four employees, who are busy with a data center contract, and another commercial location. Flagg says they are always looking for qualified employees.

Flagg is a single mother of four children: Xander age 16, Logan, age 14, Miranda age 13 and Aylah, age 10. They all live in Irrigon, where they are very busy with 4-H, FFA and raising horses, goats and an occasional sheep. Flagg’s father and step-mother live in Irrigon, which is the reason Flagg moved there.

Flagg is excited to talk about her company, which has fully trained staff, a dedicated quality control, and prides themselves on frequent communication with their clients. Their motto is “Your One Source For Everything Clean”. Jessica

OSU Extension hints for gardening CORVALLIS, Ore. – Gardening is one of the more therapeutic things a person can do – emotionally, mentally and physically – but for some it seems out of reach.

Good design and practices can make gardening accessible for everyone.

“We all have challenges if we live long enough,” said Corinne Thomas-Kersting, a retired speechlanguage pathologist and five-year Oregon State University Extension Service Master Gardener. “We have different challenges. Even when you’re young and healthy there are things to do to prevent future disabilities.” She advocates “universal” garden design – planning the landscape so that anyone can access and enjoy it.

There is no one formula for designing a universal garden. Being aware of ADA measurements for pathways, using raised beds and appropriate tools are good starting points, but Thomas-Kersting said there are many ways to invite anyone into the garden and protect the gardener from injury or future problems.

“For me, I really love to touch things,” she said. “I’m gently touching things when I’m in another garden. Think about texture – smooth, fuzzy, lacy, sharp. Variety and diversity in the garden and mindfulness in how it’s designed opens up the opportunity for more people to enjoy it. And you enjoy it, as well.”

In her own garden, ThomasKersting redid some steps into a ramp. Not only does it allow people in wheelchairs to traverse the path, but it makes it easier to move the wheelbarrow from one area of the garden to another. And, she says, it looks better with a slopping, continuous path rather than the steps.

Stretching, resting and using the correct tools top the list of approaches to avoid injuries and mitigate disabilities of everything from mobility limitations to medical challenges such as arthritis. Have benches and chairs sprinkled throughout the garden as places to rest. Keep water around to sip while

you sit. Stretch or walk a bit before and after time in the garden.

Ergonomic tools are available in a variety of prices. Look for curved handles and indentations for fingers on smaller tools or modify yours by wrapping them with water pipe insulation, bicycle handles or tape used to wrap golf clubs. Check that handles on larger equipment are long enough so you can keep your back straight. Tools shouldn’t be too heavy. Choose those made from aluminum, which is lighter than steel. Sometimes, lightw e i g h t children’s tools will do the job.

There’s much more you can do. Here are some tips to increase the ease of gardening: Buy a kneeler with handles that will help you get up.

There are some versions that can be turned over and used as a seat.

Sit on a bucket or seat made for gardening.

Use major muscles and keep your back straight.

Keep pruners and other equipment sharp and clean. With pruners, use a sheath to protect yourself from accidentally sitting or kneeling on them.

Build raised beds or tables out of wood, concrete blocks or thick pavers. Make them 3 to 4 feet wide so you can easily reach into the middle.

Height should be between 24 to 36 inches. Kits are available.

Provide benches in the garden or next to it.

Move the garden to you by planting in containers or window boxes.

Containers are easier to weed and water than gardens in the ground.

They also take much less work to fill with soil than adding compost to inground gardens. Containers with

wheels are easy to move around.

Make beds narrow enough so that you can get to the center when sitting or kneeling.

Keep tools, hoses, wheelbarrows and other equipment put away so that there’s no chance of tripping over them.

Use a light or expanding hose.

Make paths easy to navigate without having to show people where to go.

Design wider paths with places to turn around. This works for wheelbarrows as well as mobility devices.

Instead of steps use gradually sloping paths.

Keep tools and equipment close to the garden so you don’t have to walk far. If possible, move or build sheds adjacent to the garden.

Garden with lower maintenance plants that don’t need as much water, pruning, staking and deadheading. Look for plants that are disease and pest resistant.

Boardman Grange celebrates 100 years with open house It’s hard to believe, but there is an organization in Boardman that is celebrating it’s 100th year of activity in Boardman on October 1st: The Greenfield Grange #579, which is a part of the Oregon State

Grange, a nationwide nonprofit fraternal organization.

The Grange has programs for family members of all ages, and prides themselves on community service. Locally, mem-

bers are active in preparing the Community Thanksgiving Dinner, provide scholarship to graduating Riverside High School seniors for college, and assist with service to the needy in the area, whether it is repairing a broken down automobile, or providing monetary assistance.

Meetings are held the second Thursday of each month from 6:00 to 8:00 pm, with a potluck dinner for fellowship. This month’s meeting will be September 12th. Boardman officers include: Joe Rupp, Master; Mike Pearson, Vice President; Susan Pearson, Treasurer; Dena Rupp, Secretary; Muriel Darr, Lector; and Suzinna Melina Chaplain. The group is looking to reorganize their popular “Game Nights”, where Pinochle, Bunko and other family games are enjoyed.

Every third Saturday of the month they hold an All-You-Can-Eat Breakfast for $5.00 adults, $2.50 children and veterans eat free, from 7:00 to 10:00 am. This month it will be held on September 21st. You can call Jessie for carry out breakfast: 541/720-7267.

Oregon State Grange has a record of achievement in our state. The first Grange was organized in Oregon in 1872.

The group has been a strong advocate for various important laws in Oregon, including the Initiative and Referendum (which were adopted in 1902); advocating amending Oregon’s Constitution to allow recall of public officials, advocating for direct election of US Senators, which finally passed in 1913, they initiated a Constitutional Amendment to allow Public Utility Districts, advocated for creation of the State Department of Agriculture, and the state Grange adopted a resolution in favor of suffrage for women, which voters passed in November, 1910. There are Grange organizations in 170 Oregon communities.

To commemorate their 100 years in Boardman, the Grange is holding an Open House on Thursday, September 19th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm at the Grange Hall, located at 209 NW First Street.

The community organization is celebrating their 100th year in Boardman with an open house on Thursday, September 19th from 4:00 to 7:00 pm with refreshments and a viewing of a video on “What is Oregon Grange”. The group is holding a membership drive with plans to be more active in the community. The public is invited to attend their Open House.

Boardman’s Community Night Out

Boardman Rural Fire Protection District was at the Community NIght Out held August 27, 2019 at the City Park. The Volunteer fire fighters where there with a booth and lots of handouts for the community. There is a great need in our community to have volunteer firefighters, they are the support team for our BRFD firefighters. Boardman Police Department is conducting an anonymous survey to find out what the public thinks about the Boardman police services.

“Early results indicate we are weak on drug enforcement, however we have a full time officer who is on the Blue Mountain Enforcement Team (BENT), and we have had several successful drug cases that were prosecuted,” says Police Chief Rick Stokoe. “We will continue to focus on those areas of concern. Without asking, we don’t know how the public feels we are doing.

We want honest review from the community, who we work for,” he added.

Chief Stokoe has been the Boardman Police Chief since 2011. “There have been many changes in Boardman over the years, most of them positive,” he noted.

A Little Free Library installed in Boardman neighborhood: “Take a book, keep a book, return a book!”

A Little Free Library was installed in the Boardman yard of MaryLou and Dan Daltoso. The library was donated by Libraries of Eastern Oregon and the Daltosos asked if it could be at their corner. Visit the library at the corner of Columbia Avenue and 1st Street and select a book. These books are meant to be kept. If you want to trade one of your own that is okay too.

The location of Boardman’s first Little Free Library is of particular interest to those who have lived in the area.

Mary Lou Daltoso was the librarian at the old Boardman City Library in the basement of the old city hall. She served as librarian for years; when Oregon Trail Library District was formed in 1992, Daltoso served on the Board of Directors and she was also highly involved in the Friends of the Boardman Library, a support group. The Oregon Trail Library District was formed to provide library services to the communities of Heppner and Boardman. In July 2000, Irrigon also joined the District.

Humble Beginnings How did A Little Free Library begin?

In 2009, Todd Bol of Hudson, Wisconsin, built a model of a one room schoolhouse. It was a tribute to his mother; she was a teacher who loved to read. He filled it with books and put it on a post in his front yard. His neighbors and friends

by the philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.

Around the turn of the 20th century, Carnegie set a goal to fund the creation of 2,508 free public libraries across the English-speaking world.

That goal inspired Brooks and Bol to set their own goal of surpassing 2,508 Little Free Libraries by the end 2013.

They wound up exceeding that goal in August of 2012, a year and a half before their target date.

Rapid Growth By 2010, the name Little Free Library was established and the purpose of these Little Free Library book exchanges became clear: to share good books and bring communities together.

The first official Little Free Library outside of the Hudson area was put on a bike path in Madison in the summer of 2010. Within a few months, thousands

UW-Madison’s Rick Brooks (retired from Little Free Library 2014) saw Bol’s do-it-yourself project while they were

discussing potential social enterprises.

Together, the two saw opportunities to achieve a variety of goals for the common good.

They were inspired by community gift-sharing networks, “take a book, leave a book” collections in coffee shops and public spaces, and most especially

of people had seen the Library.

As Bol and Brooks continued to give away Little Libraries with wooden charter signs, engraved with official charter numbers, curiosity and demand for more Libraries grew.

The movement centered on the enthusiasm of early adopters and stewards, who were crucial advocates. Some small grants and informal partnerships began to have an impact on Little Free Library’s ability to keep up with demand.

The year 2011 brought national media attention, and by the end of the year there were nearly 400 Little Free Libraries in existence. That number would skyrocket to over 4,000 Libraries by the end of 2012, the same year in which Little Free Library became a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

Boardman Police Explorers compete in training exercises Boardman Police Explorers are youth age 16 and older who are interested in becoming law enforcement officers. Riverside High School teaches an accredited Criminal Justice class; some of those students have become Police Explorers. Students are able to ride with Boardman Police Officers for experience.

Public Health Advisory: West Nile Virus (WNV) positive tests in mosquitoes August 26, 2019 Public Health officials are concerned about widespread West Nile Virus activity throughout the area and are urging residents of all ages to take the necessary steps to reduce their exposure to mosquitoes.

The North Morrow Vector Control District is reporting that West Nile Virus has been detected in 58 mosquito samples this year. The Oregon State Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory reported on 8/25/19 that 11 additional samples from mosquitoes collected last week have tested

care as soon as possible. Residents of the district should remain vigilant in protecting themselves from mosquitoes and the diseases that they can carry, such as West Nile Virus.

Here are some suggestions to reduce the risk of exposure to West Nile: · Get rid of old tires and other containers where water can accumulate and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes. · Flush or replace the water in horse troughs weekly. · Be sure to flush or add mosquito

positive. The samples were from areas in and around Irrigon and Boardman. The West Umatilla Mosquito Control District has also reported four positive mosquito samples this year. The virus was initially detected on July 8th in both districts and has become more widespread since that time.

People are encouraged to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites.

Most people who become infected with West Nile Virus do not become ill. Some may develop mild flu-like symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, and occasionally swollen lymph glands or a rash. In rare cases West Nile may cause encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain.

Individuals with severe or unusual headaches should seek medical

fish to ornamental ponds. · Avoid outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active. · Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when in mosquito infested areas. · Use mosquito repellents containing DEET, making sure to follow the directions on the container. · Screen doors and windows. · Report mosquito infestations and dead bird sightings to the West Umatilla Mosquito Control District (541) 567-5201 or North Morrow Vector Control District (541) 481-6082 .

In response to increased West Nile Virus activity, the district will be conducting targeted aerial mosquito control spraying with a twin engine airplane after sunset. On Monday

August 26th, both districts carried out such a spray mission in both counties. A total of 5,120 acres was targeted in areas around Umatilla, Irrigon, and Boardman. Further applications will be scheduled as needed to respond to increased vector populations or positive samples as they are found. No areas within city limits are currently scheduled for aerial spraying. Areas in and outside of the city limits will be sprayed after sunset with ground truck mounted ultra-low-volume fogging units.

These fogging applications will be ongoing on an as needed basis.

West Nile is primarily a bird disease, and some birds, including magpies, blue jays and crows are especially susceptible. Mosquitoes become infected by feeding on an infected bird and can pass the virus to humans, horses or other hosts when they bite. The public is encouraged to continue to alert district officials when they come across dead birds, so the district can track the spread of the virus.

Because horses are also at risk for West Nile, health officials encourage horse owners to check with their veterinarians for vaccination. Veterinarians can arrange for testing of samples from horses suspected of infection with West Nile Virus.

BOARDMAN PARK AND RECREATION is looking to contract with certified instructors to teach classes and LIFEGUARDS (Fulltime or Parttime) at the Pool and Recreation Center. The Boardman Pool and Recreation Center is a new indoor 43,000 square foot center complete with an Aerobics room, double Gymnasium, Weight and Cardio room, a large Climbing Wall and an Aquatics section.

The Aquatics area has features such as a large Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, Water Slide and a Vortex Pool that provides fun and resistant exercise for all.

Airport planning is a systematic process used to establish guidelines for the efficient development of airports that is consistent with local, state and national goals. A key objective is to assure the effective use of airport resources in order to satisfy aviation demand, consider capital improvements, and promote economic development, in a financially feasible manner.

Committee members shall become familiar with the operations, standards and financing needs of the Morrow County Lexington Airport.

Committee members shall provide advisory recommendations only to the Morrow County Board of Commissioners and Public Works Director. These recommendations shall follow all County policies and consider all budgetary needs. Members shall reside or own property within Morrow County. 6th Annual Community Night Out salutes the community’s First Responders August 27th, the Boardman community was invited to Comunity Night Out, to meet the First Responders. Boardman Police, Boardman Fire Protection District and Boardman Ambulance were all present.

Six years ago Police Chief Rick Stokoe and Fire Chief Mark Roglestad began the first National Night Outin Boardman. Since then they decided instead of National Night Out they would do a Community Night Out. Each year since, with the help of the First Responders, Boardman Chamber of Commerce and many community businesses and volun-

teers this event is made possible.

“It’s a great way for the Community to meet their First Responders and thank them for their service,” s a i d Boardman‘s Police Chief, Rick Stokoe.

A free BBQ and ice cream were provided along with many informational give aways and fun games, including a bouncy house. Boardman Ambulance, Police Department and Fire Department all brought their response vehicles so the community could actually sit in a police car or fire truck, and the Boardman Ambulance, who was a big hit with

their electric gurney. They were called out on a ambulance run for a short time, but after they returned the crowd gathered back around.

AWS volunteers cooked the hamburgers and hot dogs for over 300 community members; Boardman Chamber furnished the chips, drinks, condiments and advertisment for the event; Boardman Ambulance furnished the buns for the burgers and dogs; Boardman PD furnished half the meat, with Cash and Carry furnishing the other half; Fire Corp donated the Tillamook ice cream and cones; Boardman Park and Recreation donated the Bouncy House. The night was a huge success.

“Without all of the volunteers, we

would not be able to put on events such as this,” said Chief of Police, Rick Stokoe.“We appreciate everyone who helped make this possible.”
