Fourth annual Morrow County Harvest Festival October 7 was a HUGE success
The City of Boardman will sponsor a community-wide clean-up the month of November. The City has garbage vouchers available, with a fifty dollar limit, to residents of the City of Boardman. The vouchers are valid during the month of November at Finley Butte Landfill and the North Morrow Transfer Station.
The garbage voucher program encourages citizens to clean up their residences by disposing of yard debris. City residents may pick up their vouchers at Boardman City Hall at 200 City Center Circle beginning October 31st. For more information on this program, call Boardman City Hall at 481-9252.
The 4th annual Morrow County Harvest Festival at SAGE Center was a successful one. With almost 1000 attendees braving the wind to enjoy the many Family Friendly Activities. Attendees enjoyed Covered Wagon Rides, Kids Corner and Shopping from Local Artisans and Growers. New this year was the partnership with Threemile Canyon Farms and their Fall Harvest Bounty For Youth In Ag event. This provided an opportunity for attendees to “fill-a-bag� of locally grown organic onions, carrots and traditionally grown potatoes, for a minimum $5 donation. Lots of yummy veggies ended up on local dinner tables. SAGE Center thanks all who attended and the sponsors, staff and volunteers who help make the event what it is. Lamb Weston sponsored annual Halloween Trunk or Treat held at the Boardman Marina Park The first annual Lamb Weston Trunk or Treat event at Boardman Marina Park featured 16 Trunks (yep, car trunks decorated for Halloween) each with a unique Halloween theme. Sponsored by the four Lamb Weston plants: Boardman West, Boardman East, Lamb Weston Pac Center and Morrow Cold Storage, the employees of each plant got into the spirit of the holiday and wore costumes pertaining to their themed trunks. The trick or treaters were given candy and trinkets at each station, along with cookies, fresh cotton candy and hot chocolate. There were children’s games scattered around the scene as well as a well-attended bouncy house. Lamb Weston representative Teresa Gerrard says “We wanted to do something for our employees and the community of Boardman, and we hope for great success! We plan to continue this tradition each year.”

BMCC News... The month of November brings a couple of workshops to the Blue Mountain Community College Workforce Training Center that will be of interest to people in the Boardman area. On Monday, November 13, two sessions of Forklift Operator Training will be held at the BMCC Workforce Training Center, 251 Olson Road in Boardman. This half-day forklift safety program covers laws and standards related to forklift operation, daily forklift and area inspection, stability, key components, load engagement, stacking and tiering, refueling and recharging, traveling, understanding load rating charts, signaling, dealing with jobsite and electrical hazards. The course includes classroom instruction, student handbook, written exam, practical evaluation and all proper documentation of training. A morning session will be held from 8 am to noon and the afternoon session
will run from 1-5 pm. Cost is $135 per person and space is limited. Preregistration is required. Stop by the Workforce Training Center to register or call 541-481-2099 to receive a registration form. An information session on filling out the FAFSA (Federal Financial Aid form) is set for Tuesday, November 7 from 3:30-6 pm at the Workforce Training session. BMCC Financial Aid Officers will be here to walk students, potential students and parents through the application process and answer any questions. There is no charge and no need to save a spot. The FAFSA is the gateway to federal financial aid and doesn’t have to be used at BMCC if awarded. This is a great opportunity to get help and information close to home. The Workforce Training Center is open from 9 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Friday. Contact the center at 541481-2099 or stop by anytime.

We are proud to announce that our older team of U15 and U13 Irrigon/ Boardman have secured games with Walla Walla, Hermiston and LaGrande as they get ready for high school soccer. RAISE THE FLAG Honoring Our Heros-Friday, November 10th at 8am. In Honor of Veteran’s Day there will be a Breakfast celebration; it is FREE to all Veterans, Service men and women, and their families. We look forward to honoring them for their courage, dedication and sacrifices made for all of us. The celebration will be held at the Hermiston Conference Center, 415 S Hwy 395 on Friday, November 10th at 8am. At the event and as we gather there will be a presentation by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard, Dance Unlimited Troup, the Hermiston High School Choir and special speakers. Celebrating Our Veterans Sam Boardman Elementary School to honor local veterans Boardman, OR (September 29, 2017)—Sam Boardman Elementary School will hold a Veterans Day assembly in their gym on Thursday, November 9, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. Students will honor local Veterans with music, decorations, and words of thanks. The assembly will also feature guest speaker, Sergeant Andy Kimmell of the US Army 160th. All veterans are invited to attend and may bring a guest. The lucky 13th Annual Boardman Quilt show was held October 13th “A Fun Show” was a comment heard more than once at the 2017 Boardman Quilt Show. Visitors viewed nearly 90 quilts and wall hangings; voted for their Favorite Quilt, browsed the General Store; and picked up tips from featured Quilter Lila Killingbeck. Visitors also enjoyed 3 Mini Classes: A vintage style “Quilt Turning;” “How to make a (No hand sewing) Flanged Quilt Binding; and “Hands On” Create a Block for a Charity Quilt.” Each activity was offered 4 times to capacity audiences. Door prizes were awarded every 30 minutes, and the Holiday Jewels Raffle Quilt was won by Terri Dorran of Hermiston. Two Adult “Peoples’ Choice” Winners were selected: Pam Dannen of Boardman for her wool & flannel applique quilt, “Berties’ Choice; “ and the “Big Mouth Frogs” cotton applique quilt by Glenda and Tammy Bozarth of Boardman.
Esther Birt won the “People’s Choice” Age 9-11 category, and Teagan Birt won the “People’s Choice” Age 12-14 category. Thirteen vintage, historical or sentimental quilts were shared at the “Quilt Turning” activity. A short story of each quilt’s past was read as the layered quilts were turned down on a bed. This much enjoyed activity will be repeated at the 2018 Boardman Quilt Show, October 12 & 13, by popular request. No good deeds went unnoticed. The Kitchen volunteers did a wonderful job serving sandwich plates, pie and beverages. The Display Rack “Set up and Take Down volunteers, consisting of Ron Morgan and the Riverside and Ione High School athletes, were marvels of efficiency. Community Women’s Club Golf Tournament raises scholarship funds Community Women’s Club of Irrigon and Boardman is pleased to announce the success of the Funshine Open Golf Scramble. Thirteen teams met on September 23rd at Willow Run in Boardman for a great day of golf. Many local citizens and businesses came together to support this tournament. BMCC Early Learning Hub announces available grants The Blue Mountain Early Learning Hub invites organizations to apply for grant funding. The Family Support Services, School Readiness and Healthy, Stable, and Attached Families grants focus on projects that serve at risk children age 0-6 and their families. Any agency or program that serves children ages 0-6 can apply for these grants. Priority will be given to those activities that serve or support more than one community. Grant funds may be used for community-based services intended to: · increase the strength and stability of families (including adoptive, foster, and extended families)
· increase parents’ confidence and competence in their parenting abilities · afford children a safe, stable and supportive family environment · strengthen parental relationships and promote healthy marriages · enhance child development, including through mentoring. · services must be provided in a culturally competent and genderspecific manner that reflects the population, needs and resources of the community To apply for a grant, visit the Blue Mountain Early Learning Hub website at
www.bluemountainearlylearninghub.org. Under the Grants/Application Process section, there is information about eligibility and a Request for Assistance (RFA) application. Information is available about how the grant funding may be used in your county. Boardman Kiwanis hand out 195 dictionaries to third grade students
Third Grade students at Sam Boardman Elementary and A. C. Houghton Elementary Schools were the recipients of a free, Individual Websters Dictionary thanks to the Boardman Kiwanis Club. Each year, the Kiwanis group selects projects that benefit the youth of the area; the free dictionaries has been an ongoing project for many years. For some students, the dictionary is the first personal book they have owned.

Columbia River Community Health Services announces extended hours, new services We have many exciting things coming our way this month of November at Columbia River Community Health Services (CRCHS). We will be adding on two new providers to our medical team. Our clinic would also like to welcome Terri Dickens, our new Behavioral Health Consultant; she joined our team the end of October. Terri will be helping with our patients in house. Our CRCHS team is growing and that is something to be excited about! Along with that exciting news, we are always looking for ways to better our clinic accessibility. Starting November 15th our clinic will be open until 6:00 PM Tuesday - Friday. In the near future, we will be extending our hours even more. We will be open Monday – Friday 8 am – 8 pm and Saturdays 8 am – 5 pm in the near future, making it more accessible to our patients. Our Columbia River Pharmacy will be opening up beginning of December 2017; everything is moving along as planned. Too many exciting things happening in our clinic and I believe there is no better way to end the year. The main purpose of this support group is to be able to provide educational classes focusing on family and personal well-being, also to provide a place for moms to communicate/network with each other. We are looking for moms to volunteer their time to be a part of the support group committee to help our clinic in developing a place where moms can get the best benefit out of this group. As soon as we get volunteers lined up, we will schedule a date to meet with the goal to get this much needed support group started.

PENDLETON, Ore. – Community college students in Pendleton and Hermiston are invited to attend EOU Transfer Day Nov. 9 at Blue Mountain Community College campuses. Wendy Sorey, regional advisor for EOU’s Pendleton Center, will be at the Pendleton campus in Morrow Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to introduce BMCC students to transfer opportunities. Meanwhile, Hermiston/Pendleton Center Director Kerry Thompson will work with students at the Eastern Oregon Higher Education Center (EOHEC) in Hermiston from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., and from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Students who attend the event at either location may receive instant admission if they meet requirements and bring official transcripts. Kiwanis Club of Boardman sponsored a Spooktacular Halloween The Kiwanis Club of Boardman hosted their annual Community Halloween Party the last Tuesday of October with the roars of excitement and pure joyousness reverberating through the halls of Riverside Junior/Senior High School. The classroom doors were decorated by students and teachers and a pretend cemetery was set-up outside along with a photo booth and games for kids up to the age of 12 to help add to the 2017 Kiwanis Halloween Celebration. However, kids weren’t the only ones to celebrate in the event as many of the grownups put on their costumes for the evening and joined in the festivity as well. Each kid received a free treat at each of the 22 decorated doors and hot dogs (donated by Lamb Weston), buns (donated by Franz Bakery), chips and a cold drink were also made available for $1. Thanks to the Key Club, Riverside Junior/Senior High School and all community members who joined
in the fun.
