Winter weather was no problem with the Field House available Locally, there has been little baseball and softball practice during the winter months until Boardman’s newest sports amenity, The Field House was completed last November. There has also been no facility within the Boardman area where the Boardman Police Department could conduct their training. Now there is. The Field House has been a dream for the members of Boardman Community Development Association (BCDA), especially for Lisa Mittelsdorf! Finding a way to construct this facility has been on their radar since at least the year 2011. The current board members of BCDA are: Roz Pedro, David Norton, Jill Parker, Karen Pettigrew, and Lisa Mittelsdorf. Priority project categories are reviewed with the joint BCDA/Boardman Chamber Economic Development Committee. That group meets at 7:30 am the 2nd Thursday of each month at City Hall. The new facility is huge: 60 feet by 108 feet, with a bump out of 60’ by 10’ for storage and restrooms, which are accessible from outdoors so people enjoying the nearby basketball courts and playground can use them. Although without any signage on the exterior, you can’t tell what’s inside. Mittelsdorf says the exterior signs have been ordered and should be installed soon. A schedule of use is posted on their Facebook page: www.facebook.com/ BoardmanFieldHouse and a lengthy list of contact numbers is posted on the exterior of the building so the general public can make arrangements to use the facility for hitting and fielding practice. Boardman Police Chief Rick Stokoe is effusive with his praise for the facility, “For the first time we have a nearby place where we can set up a digital screen and utilize the Field House for training.” Stokoe plans to hold training classes for the public in Self Defense, Concealed Weapons Training and Weapons,
while, the facility is in daily use for Riverside High School softball , baseball and Columbia Little League. The public is invited to the Grand Opening, which will be held Tuesday, May 21st from 5:30 to 7:00 pm. At that time, the many people who donated time, materials and money to this long-needed project will be thanked. Annual Boardman Easter Egg Hunt was fun for all About 300 children, walkers through 4th graders, and their relatives attended Boardman’s Annual Easter Egg Hunt at the Boardman Marina Park on Saturday, April 20th. Even though the weather was a bit wet, everyone agreed it was a day of fun for the whole family. The annual event began at 9:15am with a “Meet & Greet” with the Easter Bunny and friends, bouncy houses and face painting. Also, the fire department held a photo with the Eas-
ter Bunny fundraiser at the same time to raise money for the fire station. The Easter egg hunt began sharply at 10:30am. About 10:35am all the eggs were found! Community volunteers hid over 4000 candy-filled eggs and toys this year including prize eggs in each age category. Mini stuffed animals could also be found in the hunt areas for the younger children. 40 prize eggs were redeemed for various cool prizes, all donated by the Walmart

Distribution Center. A TV raffle fundraiser was held for the Easter Egg Hunt; the winner was Ryan Kreps of Boardman. Event organizer, Michelle Seeley, said “this event wouldn’t be possible without the donations from generous businesses and individuals”. She was also thankful of the many volunteers who showed up to help with the event. Ms. Seeley is already making plans for next year’s event.

Blue Mt. Sams return to Marina Park to clean up for 15th year! Once again Boardman Park & Recreation District received immense help with their Spring Cleanup, from their adopted Good Sams Club called “Blue Mountain Sams”, out of Pendleton. Eight of their members continued their tradition for the 15th year; the Club “adopted” Boardman Park and come every year to assist with the spring cleanup. Blue Mt. Good Sams Club is a chapter of the Eastern Oregon division (from The Dalles to Ontario). The group is also very involved in other volunteer duties and fund raising.
While in Boardman in early April, the Club members worked on cleaning up the day use area to prepare it for the big Easter Egg Hunt. They mowed, raked, and cleaned up fallen limbs. Their work is appreciated by the Park staff, who say it would be difficult to have the park all spruced up for the Easter Egg Hunt without their help. A big “THANKS” goes out to each of the members: Randy and Loretta Wells, John and Sharon Cook, John Dakka, Keith Bouder and Richard Larsen.

Board Certified Foot and Ankle Specialist, Dr. Kessa Mauras Photo Contributed HEPPNER, OR - April 18, 2019 — Board Certified Foot and Ankle Specialist, Dr. Kessa Mauras, of Mt. Hood Podiatry, is now serving Morrow County residents at Morrow County Health District’s Pioneer Memorial Clinic in Heppner. Currently, Dr. Mauras will see patients from one to two Fridays per month, with the potential of increasing her time in Heppner based on the needs of the community and patients. While podiatric medicine and surgery encompass many areas, Dr. Mauras is most passionate about diabetic foot ulcer prevention, wound healing, and limb salvage. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 73,000 amputations of lower limbs are performed on those with diabetes in the U.S. every year. Dr. Mauras is committed to educating patients about the prevention of foot related medical conditions, providing them with as many resources as possible so that in her words, “they don’t become a statistic.” She also shared that too often, a skin injury or a small wound can quickly escalate to something more serious when there is a delay in receiving a medical evaluation and appropriate treatment. BMCC News... Dennis Bailey is the new president of Blue Mountain Community College and he will spend May 10 in Boardman getting acquainted with staff, patrons and the area. Interested residents are welcome to meet President Bailey on Friday, May 10 from 1:30-3:30 pm at the BMCC Workforce Training Center. Please plan to stop in. Registration for Summer and Fall Terms at Blue Mountain Community College open for all students on May 13. Students are advised to get registered as soon as possible as classes do fill up, especially with this long, registration window. New students must meet with a Success Coach before their first term at BMCC, and good new, success coach appointments are available at the Workforce Training Center. Give a call at 541-481-2099 to make an appointment. A number of industry trainings are scheduled in the near future. Oregon OSHA presents the second in their PESO Bil-lingual Safety Series, Safety Training and Your Multi-cultural Workforce on Wednesday, May 22. Safety Leadership is on tap for Wednesday, June 19 with Tomas Schwabe. The English session begins at 8:30 am and the Spanish session begins at 1 pm. Classes are free but interested participants are asked to RSVP at 541-481-2099. Another session of Forklift Operator Training is set for Friday, June 7 at the Workforce Training Center. This class includes classroom training, a written test and a hands-on skills test. Call for more information at 541-481-2099. Finally, a Workzone Traffic Control/ Flagger course is being offered by BMCC at the Pendleton campus on Monday, May 13 from 9 am to 3 pm. Successful completion of this class and exam will give students a flagger card good for three years in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. Cost is $119 per person and pre-registration is required. Morrow County Road Department will be conducting a chip seal project which will impact Kunze, Wilson and Tower Road in Boardman and Columbia and Patterson Ferry in Irrigon area on and around June 3 to July 4th Morrow County Road Dept. would like to remind all motorists that with any road maintenance project to be aware of the workers, they are very important to us. Watch for signs, flags and work-zone employees and equipment. Morrow County’s goal is to provide a safe roadway. However, it is always up to the motorist to drive according to conditions. Be patient and plan ahead. Leave early if you know you will be driving through a work zones. Please use extreme caution and common sense. They will do their best and would appreciate your patience.

Morrow County 4-H shooting sports season ends The season finished with a total of 24 participants in the 4-H trapshooting program from all four communities in Morrow County. Members shot for three months, January – March, anywhere between 25 and 75 targets a meeting. Many meetings involved Carhart overalls and stocking caps. A hearty thank you to volunteers, Ed Rietmann, Rob Ashbeck, Jim Eynetich and Stan Cutsforth for propelling this opportunity forward and starting the revitalization of the Lexington Gun Club. Riverside students heading to Houston Texas for the KidWind Challenge
Thirteen Boardman students ages 8th grade to high school junior are raising funds so they can attend the National KidWind Challenge in Houston, Texas May 21 to 23. They are trying to raise $8,000 to cover all their expenses including airfare, hotel and meals for this important national science convention. There is no School District funding available for this, so the money to attend is being raised locally. Twenty-seven teams from Morrow County competed in the challenge to go the nationals, four teams will be going. Each team designs and builds a mock (cardboard) version of a wind turbine. Each team’s wind turbine will go to Houston with them to be tested. The teams will have three opportunities in a wind tunnel to get a score recorded. To the Editor: The Port of Morrow is the county’s greatest business asset generating over 3 billion dollars in business every year making the Port the second largest Port in Oregon. Larry Lindsay, [whom many credit as the visionary father of the Port and the commissioner that brought Gary Neal who Lindsay called “the greatest Port manager in America,”] has retired after 54 years of Port leadership. Lindsay and Neal’s stewardship of the Port with the diligent assistance of fellow Port Commissioners and Port administrators has fostered the employment of over 8,000, directly or indirectly, affording Morrow County one of the highest average household incomes in the state. With both Lindsay and Neal now retired it is imperative to select the right person to continue their vision for the Port of Morrow. Fortunately Larry Lindsay’s son by marriage, John Murray, has made a commitment to take his place on the Commissioners board of directors. The Lindsay and Murray families have exercised leadership, vision, integrity, and stewardship in Eastern Oregon and Morrow County for half a century. The Port of Morrow is a business and John Murray is a business owner that knows how to balance a budget, create and expand his business, and gain the confidence of the public by his astute management of the pharmacological regulatory process. The Murray family have been a great blessing to Morrow County since they arrived in Heppner in 1959. It was John’s mother Meg Murray that authored the restoration of the old dilapidated Heppner Hotel into the successful Heppner Senior Center. Morrow County for allowing me that opportunity. The Port of Morrow is blessed with an extremely competent staff of employees from top to bottom. I am confident that this is an excellent time to retire from the Port Commission. I am proud that John Murray has decided to file for this position on the Port and I endorse him for the open position in the coming term. John Murray has participated in several county wide positions. He has volunteered 14 years to the Health District and participated in numerous Board Training Programs. His Pharmacy business has been successful in various parts of Morrow County and he has served customers in all the towns of Morrow County. He has been a willing volunteer in numerous county organizations and is sincerely interested in the welfare of all our County residents. John Murray has demonstrated admirable ability in business and public service. He is an excellent candidate for the Port Commission. Now I would like to tell you why I strongly supporting John Murray. I have had the privilege of working with both candidates, so I feel I am in a unique position to be able to make an educated decision in this important election. When I was in charge of the AARP Tax Aide program, Mrs. Radie volunteered as a tax preparer for a couple of years. I also brought her name forward to be on the Eastern Oregon Work force Board. I have a great deal of respect for her abilities and applaud her for her accomplishments. That being said I was very concerned by a comment she made at the Heppner Chamber candidates forum. She stated that some individuals had approached her and suggested that she run for the commissioner position. That tells me that maybe her heart is not into this endeavor. Now for why I am putting all my support behind John Murray! I have known John Murray for many years.- I have had the honor and privi-
lege of working with John on the Morrow County Health District Board for the past 14 years. During that time John has displayed both dedication and professionalism. John always comes to the meetings well prepared and asks for the engagement of his fellow board members. John fully understands that the only employee that answers to the Commission is the Port Manager. John sees the County as one entity and has always expressed concern for all residents of the County. For the last two or three years John has expressed an interest in being a Port Commissioner. Therefore, I know he has put a lot of thought into the time commitment, travel requirements etc. expected from a Port Commissioner. John is one of those exceptional individuals that has integrity, high intelligence and most of all common sense. For all of the above reasons, my vote goes to John Murray. Please Vote. Leann Rea

She has the ability, desire and leadership skills to fill the position with excellence. As a businesswoman, she has successfully managed Boardman foods, Inc. for 27 years. Under her guidance the company has grown. She not only provides employment, but is a caring employer. She is involved in many projects that benefit not only BFI employees but the communities in Morrow County. I was very proud to be a part of the Christmas box delivery this year. Debbie has been active with the Port of Morrow, so she brings experience in the needs of our county. She has a strong desire to build upon the progress of the prior commissioners have worked so hard to accomplish. On a personal level, Debbie can be counted upon in times of crisis as well as celebration. She is a member of several service organizations including Kiwanis. ermiston High School will present the romantic comedy Almost, Maine in the high school auditorium, on May 10, 11, 17 and 18, at 7 p.m. The show is recommended for audience twelve years of age and older. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for senior citizens 65 and older with ID, and $2 for students. Purchase tickets in advance at the high school bookkeeping office. Seating is general admission, but groups of ten or more may purchase reserved seats by emailing beth.anderson@hermistonsd.org. The show is the most-produced play in American high schools for the past decade. “Almost, Maine is a funny, whimsical tale that does what live theatre does best; it makes you laugh and feel empathy for characters going through the roller coaster we call love,” said Dr. Beth Anderson, drama club director. The HHS Drama Club will sell refreshments during intermission. After each performance, the cast will be available for photos in a designated area, outside of the theatre. olumbia Youth Soccer Club would like to encourage and welcome parents and community members of Boardman, Irrigon, and Arlington to participate by becoming a Board Member. Our meetings are every third Tuesday of the month at 7pm located at Sunrise Cafe. Without more members the club will not be a success or be able to run smoothly. OTHER’S DAY 12th First Baptist Church of Boardman will be honoring the women of our community with a brunch at 10 a.m. Sunday, May 12th. Following the brunch the women will be recognized and honored in the morning service that begins at 11 a.m. with a gift for all the ladies in attendance. She brings intellect, business acumen; as well as a positive vision for our area and a long-time commitment to making Morrow County a productive and positive place to live and work. To the Editor: I am endorsing Debbie Radie for the Port of Morrow Commissioner position in the upcoming election. Debbie is a long time Morrow County resident having lived in Boardman, Ione, and now Irrigon. She is capable of representing the entire county and understanding the impact the Port of Morrow has on our region. For eight years, she and her family lived in Ione and I saw firsthand her dedication to our community. She has continued to graciously volunteer her time and resources to support communities in all parts of this county. Debbie is currently Vice President of Operations at Boardman Foods and has spent over 27 years serving our communities though her work at Boardman Foods. Each year all teachers and staff in the county are treated by Boardman Foods to fruit boxes and chocolates during the holiday season. The children of employees at Boardman Foods can participate in afterschool programs at the plant until their parents get off work. Onsite doctors for employees and families are available each month, as well as college scholarships and after school and summer work for high school students. Debbie sees the impact the Port of Morrow has on our region on a daily basis. She brings a wide variety of skills and experiences at the local and state level that will make her an effective Port Commissioner. She has volunteered her time to the Ione and Morrow County School Boards, Kiwanis Club, Umatilla/Morrow Travel Shed Committee, Eastern Oregon Workforce Investment Board, Oregon State Workforce and Talent Board, and is currently the Chair of Food Northwest Association Board.
