Chamber of Commerce awards Boardman citizens at annual banquet Friday February 15, 2019 was the 29th Annual Distinguished Citizen Awards Banquet. This is a great opportunity to gather as a community and celebrate the people in Boardman who make it a wonderful place to work and live. Honored were Citizen of the Year-Dean Mason, Youth Citizen of the Year-Josh Gray, Educator of the Year-Kevin McClenahen, Pioneer Award-Shirly Donovan, First Responder of the year-Shane Brandon and Business Person of the Year-Robert Bose of Predators Den. The evening started off with Cocktail hour served by Burnt Field Brewery while Chris Hawkins played the Cello. Dinner was served by Paradise Rose Catering.

Oregon community celebrates ‘Wee Bit O’ Ireland’ Heppner invites you to its 37th annual St. Patrick’s event this month Heppner, Ore., likes to celebrate the town’s Irish roots, and has turned that heritage into an annual tradition that is always held on the weekend closest to St. Patrick’s Day. This year, that puts the event on the weekend of March 15-17.

The 37th Annual “Wee Bit O’ Ireland” St. Patrick’s Celebration welcomes everyone who’s Irish or wants to enjoy the fun of being Irish for a weekend. The first things you’ll see as you arrive in Heppner are the family flags that have been hung throughout the town. You will find many leprechauns moving about the city too — but that’s just the beginning of the fun.

The weekend starts out on Friday night with the “Murray’s Irish Beer and Wine Fest”; the “Remembrance Walk” and “Irish Coffee Hour” starts the activities on Saturday, along with a traditional Gaelic social gathering called a Céilí, which involves Gaelic folk music and dancing. You can expect lots of singing, laughing and celebrating.

You can participate in the “Welly Toss” (throwing a Wellington boot for distance). You can stop by and

check out the Cruz-In Car Show, support lots of fundraising from local groups like the “O’Ducky race”; “Ewe-Do-Bingo” and find your spot on Main Street to watch or participate in the “Bed Races” or “O’Planky Races” prior to the start of the “Great Green Parade.” There will be arts and crafts on display, a book sale and activities for children, youth and adults. You will want to purchase a St. Patrick’s button for a chance to win $100 (there will be 2 drawings during the weekend).

There will be a Leprechaun Run, Bouncin Leprechauns Fun Zone for the children and a 3 on 3 basketball game for the youth.

And that’s not all. You’ll also want to take in the Sheep Dog Trials (Saturday and Sunday from daylight to dark). The “Irish Road Bowling” team competition will close out

the weekend celebration on Sunday afternoon.

Organizers have guaranteed that you’ll enjoy plenty of Irish food, Irish music and entertainment during your weekend in Heppner. Entertainment for Saturday night includes a local Youth Talent Show, Blue Mountain Fiddlers, with “Tiller’s Folly” as the main entertainment. All of the entertainment for the weekend is being funded by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District and is free admission for all!

Morrow County Health District donates two AEDs to Irrigon elementary and hgh schools Morrow County Health District’s Community Benefit Fund donated 2 Automatic External Defibrillators (AEDs) to Irrigon Elementary and Irrigon High School this month. MCHD’s Community Benefit Fund contributes to the advancement of health improvement services and community building activities in Morrow County.

Morrow County Cultural Coalition 2018 award recipients The Morrow County Cultural Coalition supported by Oregon’s Cultural Trust Foundation is pleased to announce the following grant recipients for 2018 projects in Morrow County schools and communities: Inland Northwest Musicians for an associate director, Lexington Grange #726 for basement refurbishment, Heppner Elementary School for an art program, FARM Foundation for mural restorations, Heppner High School Art & Cultural Club for pottery classes, and The Morrow County Historical Society to help with the cost of printing the Morrow County Chronicles.

Applications for 2019 cultural based activities in Morrow County are now being accepted.

Projects supported in the past have also included quilting, art displays, historical library books, cultural entertainment structures, kid’s activities for parks, drama and musical workshops. Feves Gallery opening postponed due to weather issues PENDLETON, Ore. – The Betty Feves Memorial Art Gallery at Blue Mountain Community College has rescheduled the opening of Marie Noorani’s “How It Looks on Paper” exhibit due to weather issues. The event will now take place as a closing reception on March 14 from 4:306:30 p.m. in the Gallery instead of Thursday.

The exhibit at the Feves Gallery runs Feb. 18 - March 14, 2019. The Feves Gallery is open Monday-Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and by appointment by calling (541) 278-5952.

Two Riverside FFA members, Ashley Price and Anthony Rodelo, both seniors, are going to be receiving their Oregon FFA State Degree in March at the Oregon FFA State Convention, held in Redmond, OR. This degree is the highest honor that a state FFA association can bestow on its members. To earn the State FFA degree an FFA member must have earned or invested $1,500 into their supervised agricultural experience project, completed 2 years of agricultural education courses, demonstrated leadership qualities through public speaking and parliamentary procedure, have a satisfactory scholastic record, and have completed 25 hours of community service. Both Ashley and Anthony have worked very hard for this honor and we cannot wait to see them on stage in March!

BMCC news...

Spring Term registration is open for all students at Blue Mountain Community College with Spring Term beginning April 1. Students need to meet with their advisor prior to registration, and as always, registering sooner rather than later allows for best selection of classes.

Students are reminded that they should have filled out their FAFSA for the upcoming academic year which begins in the summer of 2019.

Once the FAFSA is submitted with BMCC listed as a college, students should receive communications from BMCC. At least one Financial Aid document is required of all students and must be signed and returned before their file can be processed. Stop in or call the BMCC Workforce Training Center for assistance.

The Workforce Training Center will be the site of the College Fair held in conjunction with the SAGE Center’s Ag, Energy and Processing Job Fair on March 6. Seven colleges will be on site to provide information and answer questions about their

programs. The public is welcome to stop in between 11 am and 2 pm to participate.

Boardman area residents are reminded that the Oregon Employment Department continues to hold office hours at the Workforce Training Center on Thursdays between 10 am and 3 pm (closed for lunch from 1212:30.)

The Workforce Training Center is open from 9 am to 7:30 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Friday. The center can be reached at 541-481-2099.

Community Women’s Club offering scholarships Calling all high school graduating Seniors! Community Women’s Club of Irrigon and Boardman strives to support our communities by offering scholarships to graduating seniors at Irrigon High and Riverside.

These scholarships are open to any student who plans to continue education at a college or a vocational school. This year, Community Women’s Club, is proud to announce that three scholarships will be available at each school in the amount of one $750.00 and two $500.00 scholarships. Community involvement is very important when applying for these scholarships. Please take special note of this when completing your scholarship application. See your school counselor for the application guidelines.

Sixth Annual Agriculture, Energy and Processing job fair set for March 6

BOARDMAN, Ore.– The sixth annual Agriculture, Energy and Processing Job Fair is set or March 6th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the SAGE Center, 101 Olson Road in Boardman.

The event is open to the public giving attendees a chance to visit with area food processors, utilities, farms, local government agencies, data centers and educational institutions about careers, training and find help in their job-seeking endeavors.

“We are excited to have a variety

of the region’s leading industries at our event,” says SAGE Center Manager, Lisa Patrick. “Everyone should be able to take away something from the day’s experience.”

Local high school students and college students are also invited to the fair to discover careers available in their communities and learn what kind of education they need to work in local industries.

available next door at the BMCC Workforce Training Center, located at 251 Olson Road, including Perry Technical Institute, Walla Walla Community College, Treasure Valley Community College, Blue Mountain Community College, Oregon State University, Eastern Oregon University, and University of Idaho.

North Morrow Community Foundation is sponsoring four plays performed by artists from The Traveling Lantern. These performances are made possible by donations from local individuals and businesses in your area. These programs enrich the existing arts curriculum in Irrigon and Boardman schools.

On March 12, Traveling Lantern will present, “The Caterpillar Hunter”,

at both Sam Boardman Elementary at 8:30 AM and A. C. Houghton at 2:00 PM. This exciting backyard adventure is based on the beloved character of the late Steve Irwin. The Caterpillar Hunter shrinks himself and sets off to explore the terrain of an American vegetable garden.

Pirate wrestlers place at District and two go on to State tournament The RHS Pirates finished with two state qualifiers: Ethan Snyder District Runner Up 132lbs, Abraham Silva 3rd 120lbs. Ethan and Abraham went on to compete at the state tournament held February 22nd in Portland at the Memorial Coliseum. Ethan Snyder placed 5th at the State tournament.

The 2018-19 County Ambassadors meet On Friday, February 15, the county ambassadors meet to start their planning year. After learning some etiquette lessons, table setting art and communication know-how’s, the group divided into teams and will be developing video’s to play on our Facebook page for members of our county to learn from! Things like how to do a presentation, participate in a job interview and even how to set a table for contest this summer will all be included. The ambassadors will meet again on Friday, March 8 from 11:00-12:30 in Heppner at Willow Creek Terrace to practice introductions, conversational skills and to get their video’s recorded!

OTLD staff attend Guadalajara International Book Fair “The quality of writing and illustrations was amazing. Most of the books received are not available from American publishers,” says Director Kathy Street.

Oregon Trail Library District recently had three staff attend the Guadalajara International Book Fair (FIL) to select Spanish books and DVDs for OTLD branches. The Book Fair features thousands of books from publishers across the world and especially Central and South America. This was the first year that OTLD sent staff to FIL. Last year the district participated in Libros for Oregon. Nine Oregon libraries participated in sending two librarians to FIL to select for the group. The Spanish books received increased the circulation of Spanish books at OTLD libraries. It raised awareness of the need for an increase in Spanish materials at the Oregon Trail Library District branches.

The decision to travel to FIL to select books for OTLD was a simple one according to Library Director, Kathy Street. “The quality of the writing and illustrations was amazing. Most of the books received are not available from American publishers. Boardman and Irrigon have a large percentage of Spanish speakers who frequently request books and DVDs, attending FIL allowed our staff to make selections to meet our community needs.”

A varied collection of materials started arriving in January. OTLD staff has been busy cataloging and processing the materials as they arrive. Adult fiction, adult non-fiction, youth, and childrens books are being added daily. DVDs are expected to arrive in the next month. Please visit your local branch to check out the new materials.

PENDLETON, Ore. – Blue Mountain Community College Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Director Carol Frink has announced her retirement. Her last day is set for March 31.

Carol arrived at BMCC in 2016, during which time the SBDC was the lowest contribution center in the Oregon Network, with just 197 clients served with 797 advising hours, assisted clients with just three new business starts, created 25 jobs, retained 24 jobs and helped obtain $77,000 in loans.

Fast-forward three years later, and the Blue Mountain SBDC is a top-producing center in eastern Oregon and one of the top-producing SBDC centers in the state. Under Frink’s direction, the Center in 2018 assisted 418 clients who received 2,046 hours of business advising, assisted 29 new business starts, helped to create 91 jobs and retain 12 more, and had $1,783,803 in loans obtained.

Frink’s leadership during the rapid success of the SBDC resulted in two major awards from the Small Business Administration in May 2018: the Center of Excellence and Innovation Award from the Small Business Administration for the state of Oregon, and for the Pacific Northwest Region, covering Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska.

“The past three years as the Director of the Small Business Development Center have been a lot of fun developing the team, creating systems, getting into compliance, securing special grants for rural Oregon, setting and achieving goals, and focusing on serving the business owners of Uma-

tilla, Baker and Wallowa counties well,” Frink said. “If you do the work, and do it well, the impacts from your work always show up.”

BMCC serves as the host for the SBDC, and Frink said the Center wouldn’t be successful without the College’s support. Frink praised her team of seven – six business advisors and one support staff member – for their hard work in turning around the success of the SBDC in a short time period.

The decision to retire didn’t come easy for Frink. However, her husband retired for the second time in December, and quickly began to fill up the couple’s travel calendar for 2019. Frink also noted her three grandchildren are counting down the days until her retirement, and she looks forward to slowing down, traveling and spending an abundant amount of time with her grandchildren. She hasn’t left out the possibility of setting new goals and keeping a pulse on business for a possible work project or two.

BMCC will fill Frink’s position in the coming months.
