Boardman Chamber of Commerce awards banquet February 2, 2018 was an evening to remember for Boardman. The Boardman Community Awards Banquet never ceases to inspire me and strengthen the pride I have for Boardman. The 28th Annual Community Awards Banquet this year was a simple theme of elegance, focusing on the citizens of Boardman. Soft guitar music played through out social hour and the room was filled with happy conversation as everyone enjoyed a delicious meal catered by CG Public House and Catering. Bar services were provided by Destination Bartending. During the award presentations, Barbara Russell gave a lively introduction for her nominee of Pioneer of the year, Shirley Zielinski. Barbara reminded the audience that the original founding residents of Boardman have dwindled in numbers, leaving only three remaining. The original residents recall having family establishing their residency within the original Boardman city limits and then having to uproot and relocate as the flooding changed the landscape along the Columbia River. Citizen of the Year, Frankie Nunez Lezama, raised in Boardman. The nomination letter defined Frankie as a “cheerleader” for Riverside High School including his devotion as a fan and participant in sport activities. His dedication as a volunteer in community involvement, and a leader in his family business are just some of the reasons for his nomination. Youth Citizen of the Year, Ruby Barrera is a worthy individual to receive this award. Ruby is a Senior at Riverside Jr/Sr High School and the Senior Class President. Her involvement in various school clubs, community events and nonprofit organizations does not deter her from participating in varsity soccer and working a part time job. This college bound student has a list of school associated clubs to

strengthen her resume and is nearing the completion of her Associates Degree. Educator of the Year, Clair Costello, has been a dedicated educator within the Morrow County School District for 30+ years. Mr. Costello’s “go above and beyond” view of education is evident as his focus is the overall success of the student. Mr. Costello is currently the PE teacher, Athletic Director and coach of Boys’ Varsity Basketball, Girls’ Varsity Basketball and Varsity Baseball. His responsibilities kept him from attending the banquet in person, but social media provided the opportunity for Clair to live stream the presentation while at a basketball game in Vale. Business Person of Year, Kimberly Trott of Boardman Beauty Bar, proves that you do not have to be a long-time resident of Boardman to make an impact. Boardman Beauty Bar has been in business since the end of 2016. Kimberly’s support of the Boardman community is well defined from a quote from her Facebook page, “We think sometimes that poverty is only being hungry, naked and homeless. The poverty of being unwanted, unloved and uncared for is the greatest poverty. We must start in our homes to remedy this kind of poverty.” Kimberly acted upon this quote by providing free or lowcost services to the public. She is also involved in a community “mommy’s group”, her church and Boardman Seniors. Boardman’s Fire/Safety of the Year, Marty Broadbent is the Fire Marshall for Boardman Rural Fire Protection District. Marty’s involvement with the Boardman Fire Department goes back to volunteer time with skeleton crews. In addition, the nomination letter mentions that Marty is also a person who cares about people. Marty’s concerns for the elderly has

Pioneer of the year, Shirley Zielinski is surrounded by her kids and Award presenter Barb Russell and Kalie Davis. Photo by Matt Kegler prompted personal home well-care checks on neighbors and others in the community. A quote from the nomination letter, well defines this year’s recipient, “Marty is not a 9 to 5 fireman, he is a 24/7 fireman. He is not just a friend and neighbor, he is also a caring, responsible person. We are truly blessed to have such a person in our community”. To end this year’s banquet, Boardman Chamber raffled several exquisite gift baskets, donated by various chamber entities and auctioned the beautiful floral centerpieces, created by KRISanthemums. Boardman Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate each of the award winners. All of which are great representatives of the Boardman community. Thank you to everyone that submitted nominations. Boardman has many citizens that are part of what makes

Boardman successful and we look forward to receiving nominations for next year’s banquet. Please keep in mind, a nomination can be turned into the Chamber any time of the year.
