OMSI’s “Magic Planet” big hit with kids at Boardman Library An oversized lighted globe that spins colorful windstorms, tsunamis, ocean currents and more across oceans and continents on Earth’s surface returned for a month again this year from the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) to the Oregon Trail Library District (OTLD).

The Magic Planet sits on top of a projector that sends images to its inside, the Earth’s surface, and is connected to a laptop programmed by NASA to show dozens of moving images and programs as the globe lights up and spins.

The spinning planet features brilliantly-colored displays such as Earth’s city lights, climate change, tsunamis, wind streams, ocean currents, geographic and topographic features and much more – including 7-minute videos about Earth that are projected onto the globe’s surface.

“The Magic Planet is amazing.

It captivates the senses. The one we’ve brought out to eastern Oregon is a smaller version of the huge Science on a Sphere exhibit we’ve had here at the museum in Portland,” said Nate Lesiuk, program developer for OMSI’s Earth From Space program.

The Magic Planet is brought to public libraries in the region through a NASA grant provided to OMSI in collaboration with Libraries of Eastern Oregon (LEO), of which OTLD is a member, and most recently was at Lakeview and Union. The exhibit will continue to be rotated among public libraries in eastern Oregon throughout this year.

U.S. Navy music groups coming to SAGE Center on March 9th Navy brass quintet and rock group set for free Boardman performance BOARDMAN, – The U.S. Navy Band Northwest’s “Five-Star Brass” Quintet and rock music group “Passage” are visiting the SAGE Center for a free, one-night performance in March.

The groups will perform March 9 at 7 p.m. in the SAGE Center Theater, 101 Olson Road, Boardman.

“We are privileged to have the talented Navy Band Northwest perform at the SAGE Center,” said Kalie Davis, SAGE Center manager.

“This free concert is a great opportunity for the community to take advantage of both their brass quintet and “Passage” rock band. We have a beautiful theater and we are excited to use it for talented groups coming through our area.”

The brass quintet performs in U.S. Navy ceremonies, patriotic opening events, community outreach missions, and educational enrichment events

in schools and universities, said Musician Third Class Peter Mattice. Two trumpets, a French horn, a trombone, and a tuba comprise the quintet. The ensemble performs classical, Dixieland, jazz,

and contemporary pieces, Mattice said.

Members of the brass quintet are; Unit Leader Musician First Class Joseph Schoonmaker, trombone, Musician First Class Roger Starcher, tuba, Musician Second Class Chris McGann on the trumpet, Musician Second Class Blake Yarbrough, French horn, and Musician Third Class Patrick Pedlar, trumpet.

“Passage” is ideal for all audiences and age groups demanding high-energy popular music and audience interaction, Mattice said.

Josh Kerns of Seattle’s KIRO Radio describes the group as “a contemporary face of the fighting force.” The group performs hits by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC, Bonnie Raitt, Bruno Mars, Journey, Stevie Wonder, Brian Setzer, and more.

Members of “Passage” are; Unit Leader Musician First Class Robby Taylor on guitar and lead vocals, Musician Second Class Mike Oliver, sound engineer, Musician Second Class Matt Jones, keyboards, Musician Third Class Daniel Weber, guitar and vocals, Musician Third Class Micah Lewis, drums, Musician Third Class Peter Mattice, bass.

Upcoming BMCC Offerings Spring Term is just around the corner at Blue Mountain Community College. Registration is now open for all new and returning students so get signed up early to avoid being shut out of a class.

Two classes are being offered in the newly developed area of Industrial Automation Technology.

Introduction to Industrial Automation (IAT109) is a two credit class that surveys this exciting new field.

Troubleshooting Electrical Systems (IAT141) is a four credit class where students will troubleshoot common electrical problems including low voltage, high voltage, excessive resistance, open circuits,

high resistance shorts to ground, and current and voltage imbalance.

A Forklift “Train the Trainer” class is scheduled for BMCC Boardman on April 14. Call for details.

A new session of both GED and English as a Second Language will kick off the week of March 30 with orientation for new students. Returning students will return to class the following week. GED meets Tuesday and Thursday nights

from 5:30-8:30 while ESL is set for Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-8:30.

Blue Mountain Community College will be offering a Real Estate Broker class at the Hermiston campus during this upcoming Spring Term. This class prepares students to sit for the state exam. The class will be held on Tuesday nights from 6-9 pm starting March 31. In addition to the face-to-face classroom time, students will be expected to study some material online. Boardman Buzzzzzzzz March Greetings!

It seems as if spring has arrived even though we never really had winter. With spring comes our annual Frostbite Golf Scholarship Tournament. This is a great way to dust off your clubs for the first tournament of the season and donate to our scholarship fund for Riverside High School students.

Last year we were able to award more than $4,000 in scholarships to local students, so gather yourself and three golfing buddies and join us on March 28th for the tournament at the Willow Run Golf Course in Boardman.

Food for thought this month. I want to share a great book that I read, The End of Membership as We Know It: Building the Fortune-Flipping, Must Have Association of the Next Century, by Sarah Sladek. In the changing economy, technological advances and retiring of Baby Boomers; membership organizations have struggled to retain, promote and find new members. This was a great, short read with some viable solutions for attracting and retaining quality membership.

She also includes ideas on marketing your organizations and being solution-oriented for your membership. Check it out, it’s a great read.

SAVE THE DATE: Frostbite Golf Tournament- March 28th, The Frostbite Open will be held at Willow Run Golf Course on West Wilson Lane in Boardman on Saturday, March 28th, 2015.

Cost is $50 per player or $200 per 4-person team. The 4-person scramble with a “shot gun” start at 9:00 a.m. Tournament participation is limited to 80 golfers and spots fill up fast! Proficiency class on Saturday, March 7 instructed by Shane Brandon. The class starts at 9 am with a classroom session focusing on safety and laws. After a one hour lunch break, students will travel to the shooting range for the hands-on part of the class. This class satisfies the proficiency requirements needed to obtain a concealed weapons permit and gives a great opportunity to practice shooting under the watchful eye of a trained professional. The Boardman Annual Banquet and Awards Ceremony celebrated their 25th year with the February celebration.

Boardman Chamber member Lani Bass introduced the Citizen of the Year award winner. “This year’s Citizen of the Year Award winner is truly a citizen who has served the Boardman community by contributing her talents and helping others through her acts.

Over this last year, she has been a member and supporter of the Boardman Kiwanis and has acted as Co-Chairperson for the Wine Tour, Chairperson for the Kiwanis Team at the Heppner MS Walk and Chairperson for the Community Halloween Party. Additionally, she supported the Boardman 4th of July event through planning, event coordination and follow through.

She spearheaded the addition of the family games and contests for the event as well as obtained all the supplies and prizes. Along with all that, she donates her time and funds to other school and community events, including cooking dinner for the Riverside foot-

ball team. Overall, she has always demonstrated character and commitment to making a positive difference in the Boardman community. She is truly a Citizen of this Community and I am proud to introduce my friend, Deanna Camp, as the 2014 Boardman Citizen of the Year.”

The next award is for a new category- Youth Citizen of the Year.

This award is designed to honor the driven young men and women in Boardman who are making positive contributions to both their school and community. To announce the winner, David Boor spoke to the crowd.

“This young man has been a long-time volunteer in Boardman.

He has contributed his time and talents to assisting with various community clean-ups, decorating main street for christmas, helping getting people registered to vote and promoting the upcoming recreation center. He has also donated his time to assist with setting up for Boardman 4th of July and Vinco de Mayo events.

He is an exemplary role model

as the Riverside High School student body president, honor roll student and member of the 2014 homecoming court. He is also a dedicated athlete involved in football, soccer, allleague baseball and last but not least a 3-time high school state wrestling champion. His current record is currently 126-1.

He has won ‘student of the quarter’ and ‘athlete of the week’ and has volunteered to help coach the youth wrestling program. It is my pleasure to introduce the first Youth Citizen of the Year award winner, Hans Rockwell.

Marie Shimer introduced the Educator of the Year, a special education teacher at Riverside High School. “She works with our transition students to help them develop life skills that will help them be independent and successful once they leave our building. She works tirelessly to make sure her students have every opportunity for growth and success. This educator is without fail one of the last staff members to leave the building at the end of the day and is often found at work on the weekends, holidays, and throughout the summer. She is continually implementing new ideas in either teaching her students or giving them opportunities to practice life skills such as budgeting, grocery shopping, and meal preparation. She truly goes above and beyond in all she does for her students out of her genuine love for them.

Her tireless commitment to her students and our community is reflected in the positive relationships and respect that she has built with her students and their families over the last several years. It is an honor to introduce the 2014 Educator of the Year, Mrs. Charlene Baker.

Our next award is recognizing those who have contributed to Boardman and been in our community for over 40 years. Barbara Russell spoke about the recipients.

“Delmer and Barabra Hug are true Boardman pioneers. Between the two, it is almost impossible to

count the hours they have dedicated to our community. Delmer and Barbara were two of the people who started the Boardman Senior Center and continue to dedicate their time to the seniors. They assist in the grocery shopping and other duties at the Senior Center as well as volunteer at the Boardman rest area. They are always taking anyone who needs to go to the doctor to their appointments. They almost never turn down anyone who is need of their assistance. Delmer, who has volunteered and served on the board for the fire district, has lived in Boardman for almost 80 years.

Barbara and Delmer Hug are some of the last true pioneers in our community and it is my pleasure to introduce them as this year’s Noardman Pioneers.”

Suzanne Gray spoke about the Fire & Safety Award recipient.

“This year’s Fire & Safety Award recipient began volunteering with Boardman Rural Fire in July of 2006. He transferred from Stanfield and was promoted to lieutenant in November 2009. He is a model volunteer by consistently attending trainings (over 300 to date) and responding to calls for service (over 400). He has dedicated a third of his life to firefighting and public safety while working a graveyard shift at his place of employment.

In addition to his volunteer firefighter duties, he is involved in sports competing in the Scott Firefighter Combat Challenge, two Spartan races, and coaching with Columbia River Little League. Continuing his responsibility as an involved community member, he is part of an informal neighborhood watch. He is an involved husband and father of three. He can be seen assisting with 4-H preparations and attending school and other community activities. He is a stand up fella and it is a pleasure to honor his hard work and dedication by introducing Lt. Zachary Lantis as our Fire & Safety Award winner.”

She is also President of the Boardman Community Development Association which is leading the charge for home buying in Boardman through education courses to over 40 potential home buyers.

She also volunteers her time in community projects such as installing playground equipment behind City Hall and various Boardman Kiwanis Activities. She is a vital participant in Boardman, making many personal appearances at many of Boardman events and fundraisers.

She is admired by the businesses and community members that do business with her.

Morrow County graduation rates far exceed state average IRRIGON – All three high schools in the Morrow County School District far exceeded the state average for their respective 4-year cohort graduation rates, which were released to the public today (Jan. 29). Heppner Jr.-Sr. High School led the pack with a 96.3% 4-year cohort graduation rate – nearly 25% higher than the state average.

Riverside Jr.-Sr. High School (Boardman) had an 83.1% 4-year cohort graduation rate, while Irrigon Jr.-Sr. High School’s was 79.03%. The District’s average was 83.23%, while the state average is 71.98%. The 4-year cohort graduation rate includes all students who entered high school for the first time in 2010-2011, and earned their regular or modified high school diplomas by the end of August 2014 – essentially the rate of the students who earned their

diplomas within four years of high school.

“Our parents and students help complete the whole picture of really completing a student’s high school education, and the commitment from our students and families in Morrow County is demonstrated by these high graduation rates,” said Morrow County School District Superintendent Dirk Dirksen. “In addition, recognition of the graduation rates goes to the administration and the teachers’ efforts and work to give students all of the opportunities to meet the essential skills through multiple means.”

The three high schools also far exceeded the state average for economically disadvantaged students. While the state average sits at 64.24%, the District average is 81.3%, Heppner is 90%, Riverside

was 82.81% and Irrigon was 77.55%.

Riverside and Irrigon high schools both have a high percentage of Hispanic/Latino students, and the 4-year cohort graduation rates for those students also exceeded the state average of 64.95%, with 87.27% and 73.08%, respectively. Riverside also showed a strong rate for students with disabilities, which had a state average of 51.11%. Riverside far exceeded that with a 75% rate.

“While we’re extremely pleased with these graduation rates, we know we still have work to do,” Dirksen said. “We ultimately want 100% of our students to graduate.”

Princess and the Pea auditions March 23 An audition will be held for the Missoula Children’s Theatre (MCT) original adaptation of THE PRINCESS AND THE PEA MONDAY, MARCH 23,2015 @ 10:00 AM at AC Houghton Elementary School Cafeteria. Those auditioning should arrive at 9:45 and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some of the cast members will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition. Please bring a snack.

Among the roles to be cast are the Princess, the Pea, King and Queen Size of Riverdom, Storm King and Snow Queen of Glacierdom, the Prince, the mischievous Jack Frost, the citizens of Riverdom and Glacierdom, the Dust Bunnies, some wannabe Princesses not to mention some meddling leprechauns. OSU expert recommends waiting to plant vegetable garden CORVALLIS, Ore. – A milder-thanusual winter has vegetable gardeners itching to get their hands in the soil. But that’s not a great idea.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is to plant too early,” said Weston Miller, a horticulturist with Oregon State University’s Extension Service. “They get excited when it’s sunny for a few days, put plants in the ground and think they will grow. But the seeds either rot from damping off fungus or germinate very slowly. At the very least, they’ll be stressed for the rest of the season and never catch up.”

Wait at least until the end of February or first part of March in the North Willamette Valley, he advised, and then only plant coolseason vegetables like peas, arugula, mustard, radish and turnip.

In April, he said, expand the palette to include carrots, beets, scallions, chives, parsley and cutting greens that are easy to grow from seed; or plant already-started transplants of kale, head lettuce, chard, leeks and onions.

An inexpensive soil thermometer helps keep planting time in perspective.

“Soil temperatures right now are in the ‘40s,” Miller said. “That’s too cold. Fifty degrees is a good benchmark for cool-season crops. And the soil should be 60 degrees or

If you can’t resist the urge to plant, Miller recommended using some sort of protection from the chill like floating row cover, individual glass or plastic cloches or even milk jugs or soda bottles with the top cut out and turned upside down over plants. Whether the warm winter will mean soil warms earlier this year is a matter of conjecture, Miller said.

There still could be a cold snap in the next month.

“Gardening depends on the weather, which is unpredictable,” he said. “But it pays to wait.”

Weston Miller’s top 5 tips for a successful vegetable garden · Prepare the soil For existing garden beds add 5 to 10 pounds per 100 square feet of lime to beds in fall. Before planting, add a moderate amount of compost (¼- to 1-inch) and a balanced fertilizer (all three numbers on the bag are the same) according to package directions. Incorporate the materials into the top 8 to 12 inches with a digging fork or spade. Rake bed before planting seeds or transplants.

For new garden beds: Remove

sod or weeds to expose soil. Liberally add 4 to 6 inches of compost, agricultural lime and a balanced fertilizer and incorporate into the top 8 to 12 inches with a digging fork or spade. Prepare seed or transplant bed with rake. · In addition to adding complete fertilizer to the soil, use a soluble fertilizer like fish emulsion for transplants, especially early in the season or if the plants are not thriving. · Use transplants when possible.

Crops that do best when seeded directly into the garden include carrots, parsnips, beets, radish, turnips, mustard and arugula.

Most other crops can and should be transplanted to make the gardening process easier, particularly for weed control. Grow your own transplants or look for high-quality starts (not root bound, stunted, off-color) at the garden center for best results. · Control weeds early in the growth cycle of your veggies. Plan to weed your veggie beds at least once per week for the first four weeks of the plants’ growth to get the edge on this ongoing challenge in the garden. · Monitor and control slugs and other insect pests, often. Keep an eye out for slugs. Find them under debris and in the folds of plants and dispatch them by dropping into soapy water or cutting them in half with scissors. Look for aphids, imported cabbage butterfly larvae, and other pesky critters on the underside of the leaves.

Why BMCC? Poster contest spurs creativity in Mo. County students Why BMCC? That’s the question Blue Mountain Community College asks students in Morrow County who participated in a poster contest to show why students choose to attend BMCC after high school graduation. One contest entry was selected from three participating Morrow County high schools, with the winner taking home $250. The posters will be used for marketing purposes for BMCC. The scholarships were funded by the BMCC Foundation Board’s discretionary fund.

Each poster entry was required to contain creative original artwork and text designed to answer the question of why students should consider attending BMCC upon graduation. The contest was the brainchild of Morrow County residents and longtime BMCC sup-

porters Chris Brown and Louis Carlson. Their hope was that the contest would inspire a thoughtful process for students to consider BMCC as an option after high school, as well as to enable a student’s parents to better understand the opportunities for tuition cost savings, workforce training opportunities and a jump-start on a four-year degree at a local community college.

There are no planned deliberations and no decisions will be made regarding any specific subject.

General discussions regarding City Council goals and direction will occur.

This is a workshop session and there may not be opportunity for public comment. (S) Joanna Dahm, City Clerk POSTED – February 27, 2015 The Port of Morrow Seeks to Fill Commission Vacancy. Applicants must apply by no later than March 10, 2015 The Port of Morrow Commission encourages all eligible local residents interested in representing the Port Commission to send a letter of interest and resume to the General Manager, Gary Neal.

Applicants must reside and be a legally registered voter in Morrow County and meet other legal requirements. Upon receipt of the letter of interest and resume, the Port Commission will review them and make a determination by the majority of votes.

The cover letter and resume must be received at the Port Office no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 10, 2015, at 2 Marine Drive, P.O. Box 200, Boardman, OR 97818.

The Board of Commissioners sets policy for the Port. Commissioners must attend Board of Commission meetings on a regular basis. Regular meetings of the Port Commission are held on the 2nd Wednesday of each month beginning at 1:30 p.m., Special Meetings may be held with proper notice as needed.

An appointment to fill a Commission vacancy will be made by the Port of Morrow Board of commissioners consistent with adopted guidelines and in accordance with ORS 198.320.

Dillabaugh at the Convention of Bee Men in Pendleton. J. Skoubo, Hermiston bee man, brother of Boardman’s Skoubo brothers, and one of the most successful honey raisers of Umatilla County was chosen vice president and is also to represent the Oregon State Bee Keeper’s Association at the American Honey Producers League meeting to be held in Salt Lake City this week.

Mr. E.P. Dodd, founder of the city of Boardman on the West Exten-

sion of the Umatilla project in Morrow County and owning farming irrigated land in Umatilla County has thrown his hat in the ring for joint State representative from Umatilla and Morrow Counties. Mr. Dodd was a member of the 1919 regular session and the 1920 special session, and because of this experience he can fill the job.

Boardman Products at the Oregon Industries Banquet. M.B. Signs has received a fine letter of appreciation for the Boardman Commercial Club’s splendid cooperation in furnishing home products for Oregon Industries Week in Portland Jan 23 thru 25th. On the menu card of the diner on Wednesday night: Boardman honey sauce was served with The Dalles Apple Fritters and Boardman Swiss Cheese.

It’s the Rabbits of the Crops. Fifty people turned out for Ray Brown’s Rabbit Drive two weeks ago. Another drive on Wednesday at Mike Marshall’s place, going south to the Dillabaugh ranch where the pen was built, got about 1100 rabbits.

Another rabbit drive scheduled for Saturday, will cover the same area.

Thermometers on the East End stood at six. Harry Murchie buffs the weather out by building a new service station.

Sick List: Mr. Hereim had an at-

tack of hiccoughing from noon Saturday until Monday evening. Mrs. Klages is recovering from her operation. The small son of Mr. Mow fell out of the high chair and broke his arm. Both Helen and Albert Boardman are ill.

Ray Brown helped Walter Cahoon move his garage one day last week. It makes a barn for the four big Holstein cows he bought from Mr. Mow. One more East Ender on his way up.

The Cheese Factory rented half of the Leo Root building to store ripening cheese. They dropped two cents per hundred pounds on the price of milk the first of February, now paying $1.80 per hundred pounds.

The return ball game with Arlington was a low blow. 24-3.

February 10, 1922 Wallula to Umatilla in seven hours! Walt Waddell and T.P. Mills started from Wallula in a Ford bug and actually made the trip in seven hours. For the first ten miles, the road was easily negotiated. From Juniper to ¼ mile from Sand Springs they took to the ice and then the road.

Cloud Burst Buries Boardman School Bus. Travelers from Boardman to Heppner became

caught in a Juniper Canyon Cloud Burst. Stalled in the mud, they walked ten miles to King’s calling Boardman for help.

Nate Macomber, his wife and Sybil Grace arrived in the school bus and pulled them out, when a second cloud burst buried the school bus and their car in four feet of water.

Mr. Macomber walked back to King’s and phoned Morgan, who took the Ford and brought them all back to Boardman at 3:00 am. Mrs. King provided hot drinks and sandwiches. The two vehicles are buried in mud, but the Boardman community will come together to get them out.

Adolph Skoubo says sand vetch proves to be good soil builder for the rancher. “It is nitrate-gathering, the same as clover. It does not become a pest in the orchard as alfalfa and clover does, as it is easily kept back.”

Messers. Imus and Poe of Wells Springs were in Boardman Monday, circulating a petition for the opening of a road out of Wells Springs to enable the farmers of that section to have an easier grade and shorter route to the railroad.

We understand that, with the exception of three, all of our community signed.

A delicious clam supper was served at midnight at the surprise party given for the Snively family.

The guests continued dancing until early morning. Miss Katherine Marshall and Dilbert Johnson won the prize for the best two-step; Miss Essie Snively and Walter Johnson won the award for the best waltz.

February 21, 1922 Scarlet Fever. The Messenger family is under quarantine. Parents, fearful of scarlet fever, are taking their children out of school. Many children are already ill with the grippe or the fly.

BOARDMAN’S WEST END HAS A TELEPHONE LINE. Elmer Westervelt has nearly finished bailing hay on the East End and is now bailing at Ray Brown’s.

From there the balers will move to Adolph Skoubo’s. John Partlow is bailing at Mr. Garrett’s on the Gibson ranch. Frank Cramer is taking care of the baled hay at Mr. Garrett’s place for his daughter, Mrs. Gibson.

Sam Boardman is again on the sick list. Louise and Mrs. Klages are still at the Umatilla Hospital, but are sitting up now. Vaughn Keys is recovering from his operation. Howard Packard is improving.

Irrigon students move up in Battle of the Books competition Morrow County School District and Irrigon Elementary School are proud to announce that they are sending two teams to the Oregon Battle of the Books regional competition at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton, Oregon on Saturday, March 7, 2015.

After winning school-level competitions in their respective grade spans, both teams will compete in the March 7th tournament.

This is the first time in Irrigon Elementary history that teams have attended the regional event. The entire staff at Irrigon Elementary is extremely proud of the Battle of the Books competitors, and wishes these two teams the best of luck at

the upcoming tournament.
