EOM is one of several local nonprofits and community organizations based in Morrow and Umatilla counties that will be able to expand their work and continue to make a meaningful impact in their communities thanks to a $2 million investment from AWS. The company is making the contribution through its community outreach program AWS InCommunities, dedicated to helping its neighbors and strengthening the communities where AWS operates.
June 12th Women Veterans Day
The grant will also fund EOM's Weekend Backpack Program, which feeds 275 food-insecure students each week when schools are closed.
AWS has been present in Eastern Oregon since 2011. Since then, through capital investments totaling more than $15 billion in Morrow and Umatilla counties, AWS data centers and related operations have contributed more than $1.7 billion in GDP to the local economy and supports an average of 2,000 jobs annually—a majority of which are skilled technical roles. Through AWS InCommunities, AWS has invested in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education, equity, and access; local tech upskilling; and environmental stewardship initiatives. With this new contribution, AWS InCommunities expands its support in these areas and continues to help organizations addressing local community"Withneeds.more than 10 years in Eastern Oregon, we're honored to continue to deepen our commitment to these communities. We believe we have a responsibility to make a positive difference in the communities where we have a presence, and with this investment, we will not only continue our support of STEM education, tech upskilling, and environmental stewardship programs, we will also broaden our scope to help organizations tackling food insecurity, homelessness, veteran services, and other crucial initiatives," said Cornelia Robinson, global leader of AWS Inclusion and Outreach. The donations will help accelerate programs that are already improving the lives of individuals and families in Eastern Oregon. Some of the beneficiary organizations and programsNearlyinclude:$800,000 to nonprofit organizations that support community housing needs, food insecurity, veteran services, and community-engagement events through organizations such as EOM, Boardman Food Pantry, Conrad Skinner Memorial Veterans, Neighborhood Center of South Morrow County, and Irrigon Boardman Emergency Assistance Center. More than $800,000 to organizations that help advance STEM education, equity, and access. Recipients include the Umatilla School District Robotics Program and Greater Oregon (GO)-STEM, which drives several initiatives, including the mailing of STEM kits for 4th graders in Eastern Oregon, a Mobile Makers Lab, and an updated lending library for local Almostschools.$250,000 to support the development of environmental stewardship programs, such as the expansion of the Grande Ronde Model Watershed program, Confederated Tribes of Umatilla Indian Reservation First Foods Garden, and GOSTEM for an Environmental Education grant that will upskill educators in environmental science and its use loApproximatelycally. $150,000 to organizations that help drive job growth through tech upskilling programs and on-the-job training, such as additional scholarships for Blue Mountain Community College Data Center Technician program and Port of Morrow Workforce Training Separately, programs.

For the past 36 years, the Eastern Oregon Mission (EOM) has been the community food bank for greater Hermiston, Oregon. It plays a critical role serving the area's most vulnerable residents, including the elderly, children, low-income individuals, single-parent families, homeless, and recently unemployed. But requests for food assistance keep growing, and the organization is facing challenges."We're proud our work serves the community each week, and we're doing all we can to continue to meet increased demand, but as demands go up, so do our costs," said Mark Gomolski, executive director, EOM. "The vehicles we use to do the essential work of picking up daily donations are over 17 years old and have been constantly breaking down, which means we are spending more of our precious funds just on keeping things moving, rather than continuing to help people improve their lives."
AWS has set aside $320,000 for two community funds that will be open to individuals, community groups, and nonprofits that want to start or expand community projects that support any of the following areas: STEM education, environmental sustainability, economic development, and community prosperity and wellbeing. Through the first fund, AWS will provide grants to more than 20 local projects in Morrow County. The second fund will provide grants for projects in Umatilla County. Both funds will be administered by ChangeX, a nonprofit that connects communities to proven ideas and funding, enabling them to lead impactful projects in their neighborhoods.
Thanks to a grant from Amazon Web Services (AWS), EOM has bought a much-needed pickup truck and trailer, something that will, according to Gomolski, help to "reduce maintenance costs, which are savings we can allocate elsewhere."

Shirley Ann (West) Donovan September 14, 1935 – May 9, 2022Shirley Ann Donovan, 86, a resident of Boardman, Oregon, died Monday afternoon May 9, 2022, with family by her side after a brief stay at Regency Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Hermiston, Oregon. Shirley Ann Donovan was born September 14,1935 in Pendleton, Oregon, the daughter of Dewey Walter West and Althea Delworth (Wetherell) West. Shirley was raised in the Arlington, Oregon area, along with her three siblings –brother Dewey West Jr., and sisters Evelyn and Lois. Shirley attended Rock Creek School and later graduated from Arlington High School in 1953. Shirley was united in marriage to Carroll Jack Donovan at the First Methodist Church in Arlington on June 13,1954 after purchasing a marriage license for $3 from the Gilliam County Clerk. Shirley and Carroll soon relocated to The Dalles, Oregon where they started their family of three children – sons Jerry and Jack, and daughter Carol Ann. Old family movies and photographs reveal that Shirley and Carroll made many life-long friends while in The Dalles. Apparently, the couple would host BYOM BBQ parties, BYOB parties, New Year’s Eve parties, and on at least one occasion, a “Come as You Are Party.” Shirley also joined Carroll and his hunting buddies with their wives on hunting trips. In the late 1950’s and early 1960’s, trips to hunt the Imnaha area and the breaks of the Snake River required an adventuresome spirit. The vehicles were often jeeps, and the camps were primitive compared to the typical camp today (a green canvas army surplus tent and a Coleman lantern), but it is obvious from the movies that Shirley had fun on these excursions. She would have a big smile as she is seen riding Carroll’s Tohatsu motorcycle and target practicing with both pistol and rifle. Carroll credited Shirley with him taking his largest ever buck deer – “she spotted it,” he would say. On one of the hunting trips, Shirley asked sister Evelyn to watch a couple of daytime soap operas for her (likely “As the World Turns” and “Guiding Light”) so her sister could update Shirley when she returned. Evelyn would later blame Shirley for “getting her hooked-on soap operas.”In1965, Shirley and Carroll moved to Boardman, Oregon, where they would spend the rest of their lives (Carroll passing away in 1996 after a long battle with cancer). Soon, Shirley and Carroll made even more friends in the Boardman area, and they formed a partnership with Shirley’s brother Dewey and wife Jeanne. The partnership included purchases and development of several tracts of land in the Boardman area and several businesses, including the C&D Drive In, Union 76 Station and Tire Center, and the Arco Station property.Shirley continued with bookkeeping for the family businesses and was also co-owner/ operator of the C&D, along with sister-in-law Jeanne. Later, Shirley worked as an assistant cook at Sam Boardman Elementary and Riverside High School, where she loved being with her friends and co-workers and seeing the kids each day. During her days operating the C&D Drive In and working as a cook in the schools, Shirley had the opportunity to meet and have a positive influence on the Boardman youth. This is also evident when reviewing the countless thank you cards and letters, quinceanera celebration announcements, and high school graduation announcements (Shirley seems to have kept them all).
Shirley was active in the Boardman community, including as a longtime member of the Tillicum Club and involvement in other civic organizations and fundraisers. One of Shirley’s proudest moments was when she received the “Boardman Pioneer Award.” She also loved pinochle card parties, bowling in the women’s league, playing golf at Willow Run Golf Course, being with her family, and going to the Oregon beaches with her friends and family. Later in life, Shirley enjoyed eating lunch at the Sunrise Café where nobody was a stranger to her, and you might hear her say as she was leaving, “I love you and I like you.” She liked to take short drives around Boardman, including west past the golf course on Wilson Rd, east past the family home on Kunze Rd, or down around “the loop” where she might call out where her friends or family lived. She also liked to drive down to the Boardman Marina to see how many boats were out fishing and to see the baby geese. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband, Carroll, her parents, Dewey Sr., and Althea West, and her siblings, Dewey West Jr., and Evelyn Russell Locy, and her partner TroySurvivorsMcGowan.include her sister Lois Hutson Gill, her children and their spouses, Jerry and Susan Donovan of Columbia City, Oregon; Jack and Anita Donovan of Boardman, Oregon; and Carol Ann and Curtis Viall, of Mountain Home, Idaho. Shirley is also survived by her 10 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.Agraveside service being held on Saturday, June 11, 2022, at 10:00AM at Riverview Cemetery, Boardman, Oregon. Following the burial service, all friends and family are welcome and encouraged to attend the gathering at Boardman Marina Park Pavilion. Dress comfortably, bring a chair, and stay awhile to visit. BMCC News - Summer classes start ( Morrow County) – Voters in Morrow County did not pass the Morrow County School District General Obligation bond on the May 17th ballot. Superintendent Dirk Dirksen said the district is disappointed about the outcome. “We worked very hard to inform our communities about the bond and how it could improve our facilities, but we acknowledge that this is a challenging time to pass a bond. We continue to be committed to student success in all our schools,” Dirksen said.Dirksen said he appreciates all of the district staff who worked on the district’s bond information campaign and ap-

PENDLETON, Ore. – Charttopping country star Kip Moore will bring his troubadour lifestyle and timeless sound to the Happy Canyon Arena on Saturday, Sept. 10, for the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon kick-off concert, presented by Integrity Corps. Tickets go on sale May 23. Moore dropped his fourth studio album, Wild World , in 2021, a revelatory collection written as he traveled the globe like a self-described lone wolf, that aims to make sense of a world battling nothing short of an identity crisis. Maui, Costa Rica, Australia, Scotland and beyond became the setting for Moore’s searching, and slowly, through isolation and nature, a simple peace emerged.
Thank-you, AWS,for sharing your fantastic employees with the Boardman Food Pantry. They made all the work of unloading the truck and stocking the shelves look easy! The Boardman Food Pantry is grateful for you! They also had Julie Weaver Sak and her 3 children here to help. As always, their service to the pantry is priceless. They could not do this without you!
“Music is the one thing where I really try to unveil where I’m at mentally, where my soul is,” Moore says. “As you get older, you start thinking about bigger concepts and where you fit in the grand scheme of this whole thing, and I’ve always tried to live my life simple. But the more I’ve lived, the more I understand that all this stuff we crave and seek, I see how much of life is smoke and mirrors. When I strip it down to the bare essentials, that’s when I’m the mostThishappy.”wasn’t always Moore’s approach, and he splashed into the mainstream with the double-Platinum “Somethin’ Bout a Truck” in 2012, then followed up with three more bestselling #1 hits (“Hey Pretty Girl”, “Beer Money”, and “More Girls Like You”), a trio of ambitious, critically acclaimed albums and two gritty EPs. He toured the world headlining his own shows, earning acclaim and a fierce following as an allin performer at each setting. “We’re excited to kick off the week with Kip Moore’s energy, heart and soul,” said Happy Canyon President Kenzie Hansell. “He’ll bring entertainment for all generations to enjoy in the Happy Canyon Arena.”Round-Up President Karl Farber agreed. “Kip Moore has a great following, and we’re excited to have him kick off Round-Up week in Pendleton,” Farber said. An opening act will be announced at a later date. Tickets for the concert, presented by Integrity Corps., go on sale Monday, May 23, at 10:00 a.m. To reserve wwwvisittickets,.pendletonroundup.com.
