Be “Tick” aware

By Greg Barron, Manager, North Morrow Vector Control District Unlike the winter of 2016-17, the winter of 2017-18 was relatively mild and uneventful which equals an early and abundant tick season in Oregon. People have been calling me about ticks after finding them on themselves, children and pets. I have been out doing surveillance work collecting ticks for the Oregon Health Authority and have had no problem finding them in my traps and on myself.

My colleague in Jackson County has been collecting ticks since February and has already isolated Lyme disease Borrellia burgdorferi in the tick Ixodes pacificus better known as the Western BlackLegged Tick or deer tick in that region. This species of tick is present in Western Oregon and along the Columbia River in lower elevations. It is believed that one to five percent of the Western Black-Legged Ticks actually carry the bacterium responsible for Lyme disease.

Here on the east side of Oregon we predominately have Dermacentor variabilis better known as the American Dog Tick which can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted-Fever and Tularemia.

They prefer to feed on dogs, rodents and other large animals, but will definitely find their way to a human host. Another rather nasty tick found in Eastern Oregon is the Dermacenter andersoni better known as the Rocky Mountain Wood Tick. This tick can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted-Fever, Colorado Tick Fever, Tick Relapsing Fever and Tularemia. Another rather nasty condition that these

Dermacentor variabilis (American Dog ticks) ticks can cause is Tick Paralysis where the host will actually “go down” and be paralyzed after this species of tick embeds itself into its host. It is vital that the tick be

removed soon after this symptom happens or death could occur. If the tick is removed the host will generally recover within 24 to 72 hours.

The main way to not have a tick encounter is to avoid them. That is not an option for most of us as outdoor enthusiasts. Remember that ticks in Oregon are active primarily in the spring and summer, but also can be found in the fall.

Bear and Turkey hunters can come in contact with “seed” ticks which are virtually impossible to see unless you have a magnifying glass. Check yourself for ticks more than once, these ticks in the “seed” nymph stage can even embed themselves between you eyelashes and can go unnoticed. Deer hunters will most definitely find ticks on their recently harvested game. Beware after the animal has expired, the ticks will leave that host to seek another more suitable “live” host which will probably be you!

Things to remember when afield in tick country: Be careful when walking in thick vegetation, ticks usually “crest” on the uphill side of a trail, wear a heavy duty repellant with DEET as the active ingredient and tuck your pant legs inside of your boots and wear a hat.

While inspecting yourself for ticks what should you do if you find an embedded tick? If possible have someone else remove the tick from your body, use tweezers or forceps rather than fingers (I prefer the really pointed tipped ones), grasp the mouth parts or head of the tick as close to the skin as possible, gently pull the tick straight out, steadily and firmly. The mouth parts of a tick are barbed, so don’t be alarmed if a little bit of it breaks off into your skin. Always wash your hands and use an antiseptic to the bite area.

As a precaution, if you experience any of these symptoms after a tick bite like fever, headaches, fatigue, joint pain or an unusual halo ring or red rash on your skin seek medical attention immediately.

Remember, heading out into tick country doesn’t have to be scary, just use good precautionary measures and common sense when going afield.

Calling all Morrow County Cultural, Arts, Historic and Literary organizations The Morrow County Cultural Coalition funded by Oregon’s Cultural Trust Foundation is now accepting proposals for the 2019 grant period. Categories for qualifying groups or projects are: literary, historical preservation, visual and performing arts, or humanities and cultural organizations. 2018 grants were awarded to: Heppner Art & Culture Club guest instructor, Lexington Grange building preservation work, Heppner HS Drama Club, Morrow County Historical Society Chronicles & Inland NW Musicians/Willow Creek Symphony. Grants in the past have in-

cluded quilting and art groups, historical library books, art displays, cultural entertainment structures and kid’s activities for parks.

The Coalition invites you to submit completed Funding Proposal Request Forms to the Morrow County Cultural Coalition by August 1, 2018.

Boardman Park’s Summer Recreation Programs begin June 18th Be sure your kids or grandkids show up for Boardman Park & Recreation District’s popular Summer Recreation Program.

For children ages 5 - 12, Funtastic Kidz begins June 18th and runs to July 19th. The free program is offered Monday through Thursdays, from 8:30 - 11:30 am and free bussing is provided. A bus schedule will be available at signups, which will be at the first day of the program at Boardman Marina Park, Harold Baker Pavilion in the Day Use area.

The program is free and many themes have been developed to hold active kids’ interests. They will learn about water safety, enjoy the Park’s water slide (always a popular activity on hot days!), learn about fireworks safety and create many arts and crafts projects. Funtastic Kidz is held in the Marina’s Day Park at Harold Baker Pavilion. The final day (July 19th) the children will enjoy the amenities at Boardman Pool & Recreation Center.

The Teen Summer Recreation Program is scheduled for the same dates (6-18 to 7-19) 1:15-4 pm and will ensure plenty of free entertainment for those ages 12 to 17. Al-

ways enjoyed are the water safety classes utilizing the canoes, paddleboats, kayaks and of course the huge water trampoline! The Recreation team says they also plan to include bowling, boating, laser tag, and sessions for skate boards, roller blades and BMX bikes. The teens can register the first day of

activities, June 20th at the Park Office. For the teens who qualify, the summer session wraps up with a free trip to Silverwood Theme Park. Check out the attendance requirements to qualify. The final day (July 19th) the teens will enjoy Boardman Pool & Recreation Center.

The blowup water slide is ALWAYS popular with the Funtastic Kidz Summer Recreation Program.

A low cost rabies clinic will be held Saturday, June 2, 2018 at the Boardman City Park Pavilion from 10:00am to 12:00pm. The cost is $20 per shot.

City residents will also be able to license their dogs for free that day along with the rabies vaccinations.

The vaccinations will be given by Dr. Burgess of Country Animal Hosptial.

Five BMCC rodeo student-athletes qualify for College National Finals PENDLETON, Ore. – The Blue Mountain Community College men’s and women’s rodeo teams may have ended the season in third place in the Northwest Region standings of the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association, but five Timberwolf studentathletes will head to Casper, Wyo., in June for the College National Finals Rodeo.

Clay Hall, a freshman from Toowoomba, Australia, will compete at CNFR in bull riding, in which he’s ranked first in the Northwest region.

Preston Pederson, a sophomore from Hermiston, will compete at CNFR in Tie-Down Roping, the event in which he’s ranked first in the Northwest region and second in the national standings.

Kolby Currin, a freshman from Heppner, leads the nation and the Northwest region standings in steer wrestling as he heads to CNFR. Cole White, a third-year studentathlete from Hermiston, finished second in the Northwest region and seventh in the national standings for Team Roping (header).

Kaylee Aldrich, a sophomore from Terrebonne, Ore., heads to CNFR ranked first in the Northwest region and third in the national standings in Breakaway Roping.

The women’s team ended the year ranked fourth in the national standings, while the men’s team landed in 17th. CNFR takes place June 10-16 at the Casper Events Center in Casper, Wyoming

Boardman Pool & Recreation Center celebrates summer with Free Community Barbecue June 16th Boardman Park & Recreation District invites the community to celebrate the one year anniversary

of Boardman Pool & Recreation Center with free admission and a free BBQ on Saturday, June 16th from 11:00 a.m.-2:00 p.m. Hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and cookies will be served at the facility from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 pm; those unfamiliar with the facility are invited to take a tour of the facility, and membership enrollment will be available.

The recreation center is open for regular business, Monday through Thursday, 5:30 a.m. to 9:00 pm; Friday 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.; Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Sunday 12 Noon to 7:00 p.m. with

24-hour access to some amenities with additional fee. The community has the opportunity to enroll in annual memberships, monthto-month memberships, or can drop in for a daily rate.

Sitting just north of SAGE Center and the new Blue Mountain Community College Wo r k f o r c e Training Center on Olson Road, Boardman Pool and Recreation Center is the latest development to address the needs of a growing community. The recreation center has been a vision of the community for over 30 years that began to solidify with the passing by voters of a $12.390 million bond in November 2014. That vision was fully realized with the opening of its doors on July 1, 2017.

“Our vision of this recreation center is to provide a safe, affordable space for our community to enjoy,” stated Karen Pettigrew,

Boardman Park & Recreation District board chair, “and to encourage more of the commuting workforce to move their families to our community.”

The Boardman Pool & Recreation center is approximately 50,000 square feet and includes a 4-lane swimming pool with a twostory slide, therapy pool, zerodepth recreation pool with a vortex (a circular area where water is jetted to create a vortex) and 27’ tall Climbing Wall. It also includes several named/sponsored areas such as the Tillamook Gymnasium, Boardman Foods Multi-Purpose/ Activity Room, Port of Morrow Weights and Cardio room, Lamb

Weston Aerobics Room and Umatilla Electric Lifeguard Station.

BMCC News The academic year is nearing an end at Blue Mountain Community College with Finals Weeks set for the week of June 11-14. BMCC Commencement will be celebrated on Thursday, June 14 at the Pendleton Convention Center.

Several local students are expected to participate. But with the close of one academic year comes the beginning of another.

Summer Term kicks off June 25.

Students wishing to take classes during the abbreviated summer term are urged to get registered as soon as possible. A class selection can be found at www.bluecc.edu under Schedule of

Classes. Students who are planning to attend in the Fall are urged to cross their t’s and dot their I’s in terms of paperwork needed to attend including financial aid documents, placement tests and getting registered. Noteworthy from the Financial Aid Department is the introduction of year-round Pell grants. Students who are awarded Federal Financial Aid in the form of Pell Grants can now access those funds during Summer Term. Anyone with questions should contact the

BMCC Financial Aid Department or call the BMCC Workforce Training Center to be transferred to the correct department.

A 20-student co-hort of Data Center Technician students will begin their studies in that field on June 25 with much of the coursework offered here in Boardman.

Starting the week of June 18, all BMCC locations will be closed on Fridays for the summer. Hours for the BMCC Workforce Training Center in Boardman will be posted at the Center as soon as they are finalized.

Riverside High School celebrates students completing AAOTs BOARDMAN – On June 2, when the graduating class of 67 Riverside High School students walks across the stage to receive their high school diplomas, a group of nine classmates will be looking forward to anothear milestone – their college graduation. A few days later on June 14th, these students will receive their Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer degrees from Blue Mountain Community College.

These seven boys and two girls are a competitive group. Several of them have known each since they were toddlers; they have been pushing each other academically for the past few years. When one of them found out about earning college credit, they all jumped on the idea. When another one said he was going to earn his AAOT during high school, the others decided they would, too. “I had started taking college classes, but starting junior year, all my friends were doing more credits. I don’t like when others pass me by,” Luis said.

At Riverside, there are 15 college courses offered for a possible total of 55 credits that a high school student can earn. “Dual credit really opened the door for me – I could see what college is,” said Kevin. Through partnerships with BMCC’s Early College Credit department, the BMCC Workforce Training Center in Boardman and support of administrators and teachers, many Riverside students are earning college credits. This year, ninth through 12th graders at Riverside will earn 1,788 college credits, including 341 credits by seniors. Over the last four school years, the senior class of 2018 has earned 1,351 credits, translating into 15 of them who have earned more than one year’s worth of college credit.

But these are just numbers – when you meet the nine students who have worked so hard to get here, their drive, ambition and intellect shine through. For the majority, they will be the first in their family to graduate from high school and the first to attend college. “I would tell students to take advantage of this opportunity. I don’t’ know what I would be doing if I wasn’t taking advanced

classes to get ahead, no one in my family has a college degree yet,” said Abby.

A few of their siblings took college credits and earned their AAOTs, which motivated them. “I knew it would save time and money, and my sister did this, too,” said Kevin. Andrew said he worked hard to get basic college courses completed. “I knew I could focus more on specialized classes for my major when I got to college,” Andrew said.

Principal David Norton and Counselor Elizabeth Rosen have worked closely with them. “This is a pretty amazing group of students. They represent the student body president, athletic teams, theater, Key Club – they are involved in all aspects of our school,” Norton said.

Rosen said the cooperation between the school and BMCC has evolved and improved, making the process more streamlined. She also cites the great support of the Morrow County Education Foundation, which pays for the majority of college credits for Riverside students, totaling more than $100,000 for these seniors alone. “Now that I am more educated about the program, we are doing more individualized counseling targeted to students’ future plans, and this is a great benefit for all students,” Rosen said.

When asked what the hardest part about completing their AAOT while still in high school was, Ruby state it was time management and balancing the academic work with everything else. The others agreed.

Coupled with high school and college courses, sports practices and games and other school activities, most of them have jobs, too. Misael said some of the college classes are by term and very fast-paced compared to high school, but “don’t be intimated by the workload, it’s hard but you can get through it.” Daniel said Ms. Rosen offered advice that if they were taking online classes, log in every day and don’t procrastinate. “As time went by, it just became second nature to do this,” Daniel said.

They know these learned skills, like planning, time management and diligence, will benefit them in col-

lege. “I have done a lot of college work at my house. I am much more focused and I can concentrate on something for a long time now,” said Brock. Plus, some of them will be able to explore different courses.

“Now that I have my AAOT, I want to take more college electives and more future career courses,” Fabian said.

The students agree they want to make their families proud and make all the effort their parents are putting into them worthwhile. “It goes back to your morals and what you want your life to be like out of high school. As a kid you have all this time to goof around, but then you become an adult and you have to figure out your stuff pretty quick,” Abby said.

Kevin said putting in hard work in high school sets you up for the future. “Work now, play later.

Throughout your whole high school career, you can work on getting into college. You are more likely to get a job if you go to college, then you can have fun with what you are doing.”

Some of these students have hardships at home and some of their parents don’t really understand the importance of earning college credits. Counselor Rosen knows this. “That’s why I have fought to remove the roadblocks for all of our students who want to start thinking about college and taking these courses.”

UEC donates $500,000 to Lamb Weston Project

HERMISTON, Ore. – Lamb Weston received a $500,000 check from Umatilla Electric Cooperative Thursday, May 3, for completing one of the Northwest’s largest industrial energy savings projects in the past decade.

The incentive check was given for the potato processor’s Boardman West Refrigeration Project, which will save the company an estimated 12,975,327 kilowatt-hours annually.

Implemented in two phases over a 16-month period, the project replaced compressors, condensers and other refrigeration equipment.

The energy savings were 18 percent higher than estimated, said

Nosh Makujina, a partner with Bonneville Power Administration’s Energy Smart Industrial (ESI) program.

Since 2009, the ESI program has worked with public utilities to help Northwest industries better manage their energy use and reduce costs.

The Lamb Weston project at Boardman represents the largest energy savings for any ESI refrigeration project to date, and the third largest energy savings for all ESI project categories, Makujina said.

Since 2010, Lamb Weston has completed multiple energy efficiency projects with UEC, for a total of 34,734,000 kilowatt-hours

saved. That’s enough to offset the consumption of 3,100 single family homes.

“Your impressive commitment to saving energy has far-reaching benefits,” UEC General Manager Robert Echenrode told Lamb Weston officials. “Saving energy frees up capacity on the UEC system for Lamb Weston and other companies to grow, and it reduces the need for Northwest ratepayers to pay for new generation and transmission.”

In addition to UEC and Lamb Weston, representatives of Bonneville Power Administration and PNGC Power attended the event.

Eastern Oregon Districts Honor 2018 Crystal Apple Winners Pendleton – The InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) is proud to announce the winners of the 2018 Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” Awards.

A total of 44 individuals were honored in the past week from the IMESD’s component school districts in eastern Oregon. The 2018 events mark the 19th annual Crystal Apple Awards for Umatilla and Morrow counties and the 7th annual for Union County.

Union County winners were honored on May 7 at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande.

Morrow and Umatilla county winners were celebrated on May 14 at the Red Lion Hotel in Pendleton.

Each year, the IMESD partners with its school districts to recognize outstanding administrators, teachers, educational assistants and office and building staff for

their dedication and commitment to students and for their willingness to go above and beyond their regular duties. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members.

Winners are selected from these nominations by school district administration.

“We congratulate each of this year’s Crystal Apple winners and are honored to celebrate these wonderful educators who are making a difference every day for students,” said Michele Madril, IMESD director of communication and print solutions.

he Boardman City Council has changed their July meeting to Tuesday, July 10, 2018, due to their regularly scheduled meeting falling on the day before the 4th of July holiday. This meeting will be held at Boardman City Hall Council Chambers at 7:00pm. he City of Boardman is remind ing pet owners of the need to keep their dogs and cats current on their rabies vaccinations. This year they will host a low-cost rabies vaccination clinic given by Dr. Burgess of Country Animal Hospital. Rabies is a fatal disease of the brain and spinal cord, caused by a virus carried by mammals.

Vaccinating dogs and cats against rabies is essential in protecting loved ones and halting the spread of the disease.

This low cost rabies vaccination event kicks off on Saturday June 2, 2018, from 10:00am to 12:00pm at the Boardman City Park. The cost of the rabies vaccination is $20 per pet. Along with the vaccinations, the City will offer free dog licensing. All dog owners who reside in the city limits of Boardman are required to have their dog licensed for identification purposes.

The board meets once a year in October to determine projects to be funded from the Oregon Cultural Coalition.

Projects supported in the past include art instruction, historical library books, improvements to historical/cultural buildings, kids activities in parks, drama & musical workshops throughout Morrow County.

The Ambassadors are a talented group of musicians from several Latin American countries with great musical skills with wonderful stage presence. The Ambassadors will be doing their music in both Spanish and English and the evening promises to be delightful.
