Free concert series in Boardman and Irrigon begins June 12th The cities of Boardman and Irrigon will begin their FREE Music in the Parks outdoor summer concert series Monday, June 12th.

Bahuru Marimba Band to perform at Boardman on June 12th The first performance of the year will be the ‘Bahuru Marimba Band at the Boardman Marina Park, located off of N. Main Street on Marine Drive. The ‘Bahuru Marimba Band, comes to us from the Tri Cities. Directed by Mr. Walt Hampton, ‘Bahuru is a 15 member Zimbabwean marimba band, comprised of middle and high school students. Those unfamiliar with African marimba, will be amazed by the big, rich, earthy sound of ‘Bahuru’s music. ‘Bahuru is beginning to establish a reputation for their wonderful, energetic performances in the Mid-Columbia region. Brady Goss will perform on June 19th at the Irrigon Marina Park, located off Highway 730 in Irrigon. Brady Goss was described from an early age as piano phenom. Today he is recognized as an electrifying entertainer. Those who have witnessed his live shows are awed by
Country singer Zac Grooms will perform on June 26th at the Boardman Marina Park. Grooms has been writing and performing country music in the Northwest as a solo artist and band front man for over 15 years. Zac has had a hand in writing nearly 40 songs including, “If I Had My Way” which went to #1 on the Independent charts in 1999. Since recording his first single at age 14, he has won sev-
eral awards, has shared the stage with various country legends, and has appeared on numerous radio shows. He continues to be highly recognized in the Columbia River Gorge music community. T h e Music in the Parks outdoor summer concert series is held each summer alternating between Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks. The concerts are free to the public and begin at 7 p.m. on Monday nights. The 2017 concert series runs through August 14th. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. Concessions will be available for purchase at the event, courtesy of Judy’s Chuck Wagon. The series is funded by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District and Portland General Electric and sponsored by the North Morrow Community Foundation. Community steps up to support Rec Center Boardman Park & Recreation District is grateful for the corporate and community support shown so far in supporting the Pool & Recreation Center, which will be completed and open for business July 2nd. Although the General Obligation Bond financed the construction of the much-awaited center, the Park District still has to gather funds to operate it. There are naming opportunities still open, but the Park wishes to recognize the following: Tillamook Cheese (sponsoring the gymnasium and scoreboards; Lamb-Weston (sponsoring the Aerobics Room and a decorative outside bench); Boardman Foods (sponsoring the Meeting & Social Room); Portland General Electric (sponsoring the Lifeguard Station); Port of Morrow (sponsoring the Weight & Cardio Room); Outside decorative benches: Kiwanis Club of Boardman and Michael Family Fund. The Park is holding an early membership opportunity June 16th & June 23rd from 1:00 - 4:00 at the District Office, #1 West Marine Drive.

Several members of the senior Tillamook staff took a tour of the new Boardman Pool & Recreation Center late last month and pledged their donation. Other corporate members are also pledging for naming rights of other features at the new center, which will open with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 1st, and all pools and other features open for the public’s use July 2nd.

Boardman Quilt Group Members have just completed their 2017 Raffle Quilt and begun ticket sales. The quilt will be exhibited for viewing and tickets will be available for purchase at Boardman 4th of July festivities. This group project began in the fall of 2016, and was recently completed. The quilt front is a collection of holiday cranberry red and forest green fabrics on a white ground: the backing is cranberry red, embellished with a green tree and golden star. The unique double sided quilting design was created especially for this quilt by Carley Schriever, of Irrigon. Raffle tickets are $1.00 each. Improve your chances of winning the quilt by purchasing a half yard (18) of tickets for $5.00. Raffle Tickets will be available at the Boardman Marina 4th of July Celebration; at the October 7, Sage Center Harvest Festival; and during the October 13-14 Boardman Quilt Show
at Boardman Senior Center. The proceeds of the annual quilt raffle are used to pay for classroom space rental at the Senior Center, to bring guest instructors to class meetings; and to de-

Reminder to Students and Parents For students ages 1121, Morrow County and Ione School Districts strongly encourage you to schedule an adolescent well care (AWC) exam appointment beginning June 1, and throughout the summer months to be prepared for the upcoming school year and fall sport season. For student athletes, the exam includes the OSAA evaluation for sport/activity participation. Morrow County Health District and Columbia River Community Health Services will be providing exams by appointment only. If the patient has insurance, the insurance will be billed for the AWC exam, and the balance, if any, will not be charged to the patient. There will be no out of pocket cost to you for an AWC exam. Everyone is invited to July 1st Grand Opening of Rec Center Swim Lessons begin soon, sign up! The big day is fast approaching: join us on July 1st for the Grand Opening of the Boardman Pool & Recreation Center. We are fortunate to have such a benefit for our family, friends and neighbors. Recreation is an important process that helps refresh and reinvigorate both the body and mind. One of the most important aspects will be offered several times throughout the years is swimming lessons. Having the great Columbia River in our back yard is a wonderful benefit, but it can often be scary and deadly. Our ultimate goal is to create lifelong swimmers who not only are water-safe but love the water. Safety is paramount to prevent water emergencies and drownings in this population. Swim lesson participants will gain water safety skills, they will improve and gain swimming skills and stroke development. Learning to swim classes is a progression that ends in a lifetime of water safety. Boardman Park and Recreation will strive to do our part in providing safe and healthy opportunities for all age groups in our community and we encourage families to get active in our local parks and recreation center. On June 3, 2017, is National Trails Day and on June 10, 2017, is National Family Health & Fitness Day. Celebrated the second Saturday in June each year, this special day promotes the importance of parks and recreation in keeping communities healthy. District restructures administrative team HEPPNER – The Morrow County School District has re-structured its administrative team, allowing the district to continue to be proactive and efficient in providing the highest quality education for all its students, according to Dirk Dirksen, district Superintendent. Erin Stocker has been promoted to Executive Director of Human Resources. She will continue to be the Principal at Irrigon Elementary School for the 2017-18 school year while assuming additional districtlevel responsibilities. Stocker has taught for 13 years in the district and been the Principal and the Director of Human Resources for four years. Kaira Rysdam will be the Vice Principal at Irrigon Elementary. Marie Shimer has been hired as the Director of Educational Services. She has been the Principal
at Riverside Jr/Sr High School since 2013; before that, she was the Assistant Principal there for two years. Shimer has an extensive background in curriculum and staff development and has worked with special programs including TAG, ELL, DART, Eastern Promise and CTE. The district is posting a position for the RHS Principal vacancy. Matt Combe will remain the Director of Facilities for the district. Currently the Principal at Heppner Elementary and Heppner Jr/Sr High School, Combe has been an administrator for 11 years in Heppner. Previously, he was the Alternative Education Coordinator for eight years and taught for three years. Combe will continue as the Principal of Heppner High, while Dieter Waite will become the Principal of Heppner Elementary School. Morrow County Schools, in
partnership with families and communities, provide each student the opportunity to develop values, knowledge, skills and self-confidence to become life-long learners and responsible citizens. Jack Johns will become the district’s Director of Special Education, a change from his current position of Special Education Consultant. Johns has more than 20 years of experience as a Special Education Director and has been a Special Education consultant for nine years, including the last three in MCSD. “We are pleased with the new structure of our district administrative team – all of these individuals will continue to be important assets in serving students in all three of our communities,” Dirksen said. All changes will be effective July 1, 2017.

Eastern Oregon Districts honor 2017 Crystal Apple winners Pendleton – The InterMountain Education Service District (IMESD) is proud to announce the winners of the 2017 Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” Awards. A total of 44 individuals will be honored this month from the IMESD’s component school districts in eastern Oregon. The 2017 events mark the 18th Annual Crystal Apple Awards for Umatilla and Morrow counties and the 6th Annual for Union County. Each year, the IMESD partners with its school districts to recognize outstanding administrators, teachers, educational assistants and office and building staff for their dedication and commitment to students and for their willingness
to go above and beyond their regular duties. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members. Winners are selected from these nominations by school district administration. “We congratulate each of this year’s Crystal Apple winners and are honored to celebrate these wonderful educators who are making a difference every day for students,” said Michele Madril, IMESD director of communication and print solutions. five years ago, when these students were in middle school, they started hearing the consistent, strong message that earning college credits was very possible at their own high schools,” Mulvihill said. Earning early college credits can save students time in college and money, as the early credits are at a reduced cost. Many eastern Oregon high schools offer most of the courses needed for the AAOT. According to independent data (Ed Northwest), students who earned early college credits through EP graduate from high school at a higher rate, go to college at a higher rate and stay in college (fall of freshman year to fall of sophomore year) at a higher rate. “Not all high school students who earn college credits will complete an AAOT – some may only take one or two classes – but they still benefit from the experience of college-level work and determine it’s something they can do,” Mulvihill said.

EOU, BMCC serving more students through concurrent enrollment Students can soon look forward to accessing more courses, programs, degrees and resources through Eastern Oregon University and Blue Mountain Community College simultaneously. A new partnership enabling coadmission and co-enrollment of students at both institutions will be inked at 3 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, in Pioneer Hall on the BMCC campus. EOU President Tom Insko and BMCC President Cam Preus will join key members from teams at both institutions to talk more about the launch of the program at the event. “BMCC is thrilled to enter into this partnership,” President Preus said. “EOU is our highest transfer partner, and this allows us to formalize the opportunity for students to effortlessly transfer to continue their educations. We appreciate EOU’s willingness to further enhance the strong partnership it has with BMCC.” Students who complete the new joint application for admission will receive assistance from both institutions, including academic advising and other resources like tutoring, library access and disability
services. Tuition and fees will be assessed based on courses taken at each school respectively. “We are excited to enhance access and affordability for students in eastern Oregon through this partnership with Blue Mountain Community College,” President Insko s a i d .

Oregon Department of Students win annual spelling contests Fish & Wildlife News Family Fishing Events The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) invite you to introduce youth to the fun of fishing through Family Fishing Days. Family Fishing Events offer a host of fishing opportunities at stocked ponds throughout the state. On-site ODFW staff and volunteers provide equipment, teach youth how to bait and cast, and help kids "reel in" their catch. Adults can get tips on basic rigging, fish identification and casting. The program provides a unique opportunity for families to learn how to fish together and discover just how much fun it can be! Licenses are required for anyone 12 years and older, and are not available at the events. If you need a fishing license you may purchase one online. Pendleton – More than 35 students from three counties participated in the Annual Spelling Contest sponsored by the InterMountain Eaducation Service District (IMESD) earlier this month. Students from Morrow, Umatilla and Union counties participated on May 8 at Blue Mountain Community College in Pendleton. The IMESD sponsors the spelling contests each year. The students who competed in the county competitions had already won a spelling contest in their division at their schools. There are three divisions: Division 1 (1st-5th grades), Division 2 (6th-8th grades) and Division 3 (9th-12th grades). At the county contests, students took a 35-word written test. First through third places were selected in each of the three divisions. An awards ceremony immediately followed, with winners receiving medals. The first place winner from each division is invited to
participate in the state competition, which occurs on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend in Salem at the Oregon State Fair. “IMESD is pleased to congratulate all of our spelling contest winners and would like to thank all the students who devoted time to compete this year,” said Lizette Berryessa, IMESD spelling contest coordinator. Kiwanis Club of Boardman awards three scholarships The Kiwanis Club of Boardman has selected three graduating seniors for their annual scholarship awards. The awards for 2017 graduates are $1000.00 and recipients are: Lacey Rae Mashos, Riverside High School, Boardman. Lacey plans to attend Brigham Young University with a course of study to attain degrees in Athletic Training/Physical Therapy while obtaining a teaching certificate. She is a member of Key Club, National
Honor Society, an officer of A.S.B. and active in her L.D.S. church. Jennifer Rodriguez-Pena of Riverside High School has plans to attend Oregon State University concentrating on studies in Physical Therapy and Allied Health. Jennifer has been a strong member of Riverside’s Key Club, National Honor Society, and leadership in A.S.B. Kayden Kendrick of Irrigon High School has an interest in the
University of Oregon studying Business and Environmental Science. Kayden has been involved in Boy Scouts of America, Umatilla Water Conservation District and O.M.S.I. During his years at Irrigon High School he has had leadership roles in A.S.B., Band, Drama, and community music. ERRY & CHERYLTALLMAN HONORED On Sunday after noon May 21st a group of appreciative citizens from this area gathered at the First Baptist Church of Boardman to celebrate Terry and Cheryl Tallman years of service to Morrow County. Terry and Cheryl retired the first of this year after his serving as County Commissioner and Judge for nearly two decades. Likewise, Cheryl also retired after serving the Morrow County folks as a nurse and hospice nurse for over two decades. The Tallman family had members fly in for the celebration, and those attending were treated to some great refreshments including a delightful and colorful cake decorated appropriately to show appreciation to the Tallmans for their years of dedicated service to the people in Morrow County.

Boardman Park and Recreation is looking to contract with certified instructors to teach classes at the Pool and Recreation Center. The Boardman Community Pool and Recreation Center is a new indoor 43,000 square foot center complete with an Aerobics room, double Gymnasium, Weight and Cardio room, a large Climbing Wall and an Aquatics section. The Aquatics area as features such as a large Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, Water Slide and a Vortex Pool that provides fun and resistant exercise for all. The Boardman Park and Recreation District will host a grand opening at the new center on July 1st, we are looking to start classes the following week, we need instructors to teach the following classes for adults, youth and seniors. SAGE Center showcasing Heppner High School students artwork through August 2017 Heppner High School students will have art work displayed through August 2017 Art students at Heppner High School, in South Morrow County, have created a vibrant collection of work, interpreting local landscapes through their young eyes. Morrow County: From Here to There showcases artwork from students ranging from seventh through twelfth grade. The art project features oil paintings that highlight Morrow County. Andrea Nelson, Heppner High School Art Teacher, described the goal for the assignment. “The goal was to allow students to explore a new medium (oil paints) that focus on the beauty of Morrow County, and to learn about the exhibit process.” SAGE Center Manager, Kalie Davis, was excited about the opportunity to work with local art students. “At the SAGE Center we have the opportunity to share what makes Morrow County special with visitors from around the world.” “Featuring student artwork in the gallery is a perfect opportunity to reward students for their hard work and share their talents with our visitors.”
