FREE Music in the Parks begins June 15 in Boardman A 10 event series of FREE outdoor concerts on the banks of the Columbia River begins Monday, June 15 at 7:00 pm. The concerts rotate between the Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks, and offer a variety of musical experiences in beautiful riverside settings. Bring your lawn chair and be prepared to be entertained.

This first concert of the season kicks off in Boardman Marina Park June 15, with BRAM BRATA STEEL BAND. A perennial favorite, Bram Brata features a variety of upbeat classical and ethnic melodies performed by talented, dedicated high school students on various sizes of recycled steel drums.

tures BRADY GOSS pianist and soloist originally from Eastern Oregon. We are thrilled this amazing musician can return for a performance in Irrigon Marina Park.

To “Honor our Veterans” this year we have two special performances. June 29, the 70 MEMBER WALLAWALLAVALLEY BAND will perform at Boardman Marina Park, and on July 6th, at the Irrigon Marina Park, BENT ON BLUES will “Honor our Veterans”, They’re dedicated to playing and performing originals and classics tastefully interpreted and presented in ways guaranteed to “git yer mojo workin” and “yer hips a shakin baby”.

Boardman Park District’s summer recreation program begins June 22 Free activities include mornings for ages 5-12 and Teen Program from 1-4 pm. Swim lessons are set up with Movies in the Park to begin June 26 and continue each Friday evening throughout the summer. create many arts and crafts projects.

The Teen Summer Recreation Program is scheduled for the same dates (6-22 to 723) 1-4 pm and will ensure plenty of free entertainment for those ages 12 to 17. Always enjoyed are the water safety classes utilizing the canoes, paddleboats, kayaks and of course the huge water trampoline! The Recreation team says they also plan to include bowling, boating, laser tag, and sessions for skate boards, roller blades and BMX bikes. The teens can register the first day of activities, June 22nd at the Park Office.

BMCC Clothing Closet to outfit students seeking jobs PENDLETON, Ore. – Blue Mountain Community College provides students with the skills necessary for obtaining a job, and now the College wants to make sure students look the part when applying for or starting a new job. The BMCC Clothing Closet collects gently-used professional clothing throughout the year and then sells it for just $1 per item to students

who need professional apparel to wear to an interview or new job.

Without the Clothing Closet, some students wouldn’t have the financial means to purchase an appropriate outfit for a job.

The BMCC chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges and the BMCC student-led Business Club have partnered to collect the cloth-

ing throughout the year. On May 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., students will have an opportunity to come to the Clothing Closet in Morrow Hall room 206 on the Pendleton campus to purchase clothing for just $1 per item.

Rich Glauber Music in Action!

On Wednesday, June 10th at 4:00 pm you’ll want to be at the Oregon Trail Library branch in Irrigon to enjoy Rich Glauber!

When Rich Glauber performs, there is no such thing as an audience. His inviting presence radiates through a group and gets inside of people, lifting them on a current of positive energy and transforming them into part of the show.

Glauber is a gifted troubadour/ music educator who specializes in creating interactive musical experiences for participants of all ages. His performance is called ‘Music in Action!’ an upbeat mix of songs, creative movement, story telling and comedy, all imbued with a healthy dose of good, clean fun.

Using guitar, voice and his special, antique accordion (named Syd), Glauber effortlessly places the group into the palm of his hand, then conducts a free-wheeling celebration of community spirit and youthful en-

thusiasm. Many of his songs are action-oriented, with opportunities for high-energy movement and creative expression. “Bizzy Bugs” is a reggae-flavored tribute to the insects that ‘help the world go round’. “Hit the Lonesome Trail” becomes an impromptu square dance, complete with smiling faces, clapping hands and skipping to the beat. “We had a party at the library”, was one child’s offhand comment.

More than simple entertainment, Glauber’s work is firmly rooted in research that demonstrates the importance of movement in helping foster children’s cognitive, physical and emotional development. Rich describes it this way, “Kids need to move to music, use their muscles, find their voices, experience the joy of being an active, inspired human being.

It’s something that we need more of in this culture”.

Well-traveled, fluent in Spanish, Glauber was a founding member and keyboardist for Caliente, the popular salsa band based in Eugene. In 1990, he became an Artistin-Education for the Lane Arts Council, performing hundreds of school concerts and workshops throughout western Oregon. He has entertained at the Oregon Bach Festival, the Oregon Country Fair, the Willamette Valley Folk Festival, the Eugene Celebration, Seattle’s Bumbershoot Festival and at numerous local venues.

In the past few years, he has performed at hundreds of libraries around Oregon and Washington, invariably earning rave reviews.

Grants available for Morrow County cultural, arts, historic and literary organizations The Morrow County Cultural Coalition funded by Oregon’s Cultural Trust Foundation is now accepting proposals for the next grant period. Categories for qualifying groups or projects are: literary, historical preservation, visual and performing arts, or humanities and cultural organizations.

Last year, grants were awarded to: Missoula Children’s Theater workshop, Heppner High School Drama Club, Irrigon and Boardman Elementary schools Artist in Residence, Morrow County Historical Society Chronicles and Hampstead Stage Co. Grants in the past have included quilting and art groups, art displays, cultural entertainment structures and kid’s activities for parks.

The Coalition invites you to submit completed Funding Proposal Request Forms to the Morrow County Cultural Coalition by August 1, 2015.

Ordnance Brewing announces Taproom opening BOARDMAN, OR, MAY 27, 2015 — Ordnance Brewing, the much-anticipated Eastern Oregon craft brewery start-up, announces a limited opening of their taproom, effective immediately. To start, the taproom will be open Saturdays from 2:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Sundays from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. The brewery and taproom are located at 405 North Olson Road, in the Port of Morrow, behind ConAgra/Lamb Weston.

Brewmaster and Oregon-native, Logan Mayfield, will be featuring popular flagship brews such as the Full Metal Jacket (FMJ) India Pale Ale and the Rivercrest Kölsch among the tasting room’s fifteen taps, as well as special releases such as a Habanero Barleywine and a guest tap featuring D’s Wicked Cider from Kennewick, WA. Future plans this summer include expanding tap room hours, adding food options and a formal grand opening tentatively scheduled for Saturday, August 1, 2015.

Founded in 2014, Ordnance Brewing was a vision between Hermiston friends and neighbors Craig Coleman and the late Mark McLeod. Their aim was to bring quality beer to Eastern Oregon and further advance the growth of the craft brew scene in the area. Boardman City Council changes meeting schedule to once a month The Boardman City Council has changed their meeting schedule to once a month. They will hold their regular meetings the first Tuesday of each month, and if special sessions are needed they will notice the public of the additional meetings.

The next meeting of the Boardman City Council will be Tuesday, July 7, 2015 at 7:00pm at Boardman City Hall Council Chambers.

Chamber Awards Scholarships More than a dozen graduating seniors applied for the Boardman Chamber’s scholarships this year. The committee agreed these were among the best qualified applicants they have ever seen! This made the decision process much more difficult than usual. BMCC students honored as part of All-Oregon Academic Team this fall. After completing his degree, Hawman plans to return to eastern Oregon to work on his family’s farm in Hermiston.

Hawman has been instrumental in fundraising for an irrigation pivot at BMCC, bringing in more than $60,000 in donations to the project, and managed to acquire a $30,000

PENDLETON, Ore. – Two Blue Mountain Community College students were honored by Oregon Governor Kate Brown last week as members of the 2015 All-Oregon Academic Team, which recognizes students from the state’s 17 community colleges for their classroom achievements and community involvement.

Second-year BMCC students Kevin Hawman and Kaylie Thompson received their All-Oregon Academic Team award, sponsored by Phi Theta Kappa (the honor society for 2-year colleges), during an annual gala luncheon in Salem on April 30. This marked the 22nd year that Oregon’s community colleges have selected outstanding students from each campus for their achievements. Each college may select up to two students each year, and those students must be taking classes in pursuit of a fouryear degree and will transfer to a university.

Every four-year institution, both public and private, offers a minimum $1,000 in transfer scholarships to All-Oregon Academic Team members. In addition, the Oregon Community College Association has partnered with Phi Theta Kappa to allow team members to vie for national scholarships worth more than $350,000 from the Coca-Cola Foundation and USA Today.

In addition to meeting Gov. Brown, Hawman and Thompson also had an opportunity to meet with State Senator Bill Hansell (RAthena) and Representative Greg Baretto (R-Cove), who also recognized the students during their respective floor sessions.

Hawman is an agriculture student at BMCC who plans to transfer to Oregon State University to continue his agriculture studies

Thompson is a nursing student at BMCC, and plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing at Eastern Oregon University so that she can work in either general nursing, geriatric health care, pediatrics or mission work. In the past two

years, Thompson has taken part in mission trips to Haiti and Nicaragua to provide meals to families and children, which completely changed her outlook on life.

Thompson’s mother and Hawman’s parents attended the gala event, as did BMCC President Cam Preus and BMCC Phi Theta Kappa Advisor Velda Arnaud.

Add blood donation to your list American Red Cross has two opportunities for you to give blood in Boardman during June There are 100 days of summer and the American Red Cross urges eligible donors to choose their day to give blood and help ensure a sufficient blood supply.

Summer is a difficult time to collect enough blood to meet patient needs. Nearly 90 percent of donors surveyed this past spring said they planned to take a vacation this summer, potentially making them less available to give.

In addition, many schools that host blood drives are out of session during the summer. But the need for blood donations is constant.

Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood.

Donors of all blood types – especially those with types O nega-

tive, A negative and B negative – are needed. The Red Cross must collect 15,000 blood donations every day to meet the needs of patients at approximately 2,600 hos-

pitals and transfusion centers nationwide.

On June 6th Stephanie Madrigal and Yvette Barrera will be graduating from Riverside Jr/Sr High School and on June 12th they will again graduate from BMCC. Stephanie Madrigal is the oldest daughter of Saul and Maricela Madrigal. In addition to being this year’s Valedictorian, Stephanie is graduating a year early with a 4.0 GPA. Recipients from Riverside High School— Megan Hearn is a member of National Honor Society, Drama Club and Key Club. She has a class rank of 7th while she is pursuing an AAOT degree with BMCC. She plans to attend Western Oregon University studying Fine Arts and Secondary education.

Stephanie Madrigal has participated in sports and choir while a member of National Honor Society and Key Club. She is ranked 1st in her class and will graduate with an AAOT degree for BMCC in June.

She has a 4.0 G.P.A. throughout high school. Stephanie plans to

enroll at University of Portland majoring in Business Administration.

Maria Rodriguez has been involved in track, National Honor Society, cheerleading and Key Club while attaining 5th ranking in her class. She will graduate with over 35 college credits in June. She plans to enroll at Oregon State University majoring in pre-medicine.

Alisha Sorensen plans to attend BMCC , then transferring to BYU/ Idaho to major in child development and business. Alisha is a member of National Honor Society, LDS church and volunteers with the Boardman and Irrigon Ambulances. While achieving 3rd ranking in her class she will graduate with 39 College credits and a Honors diploma.

Irrigon High SchoolZachary Rice has participated in sports as a member of two State Champion basketball teams. He has a 5th ranking in his class while

being a member of National Honor Society and Key Club. He intends to enroll at Lane Community college majoring in nursing.

Shalom A. Robles has also participated in the college credit program while achieving a 3rd ranking in her class. She is a member of National Honor Society and Key Club. She hopes to attend Oregon Institute of Technology majoring in medicine.

Adrian Romero has played in many sports- basketball, soccer, and track. He has helped Irrigon High School achieve state championships in basketball while individually being named State player of the year. He is a member of National Honor Society and Key Club while being ranked 1st in his class.

Adrian plans to enroll at Lewis and Clark majoring in sports medicine.

Mo. Co. babysitting workshop held

On Friday, May 15th the 4-H office hosted a babysitting workshop open to all 4-H and non 4-H members in Morrow County.

We had 13 participants in this all day workshop. Participants learned basic first aid, how to deal with difficult situations, preparing healthy snacks & meals, starting

their own babysitting business, care of an infant & toddlers along with other age groups, as well as safety in the home and what the 6 Pillars of Character are for serving as a quality babysitter.

Each participant created and went home with their own tote bag full of games, first aid books, first

aid kits, and healthy recipes to use when they babysit in the future.

Led by Engagement Team Leader Mike Connell, the Ardent Mills crew of the Arlington Mix Facility returned to Boardman in May to volunteer in their own CleanUp Day for Earth Day. The crew worked last year for the same celebration, and took on even more projects this year: cleaning up the interior and exterior of Boardman Senior Center; planting flowers at City Hall; repainting the historic Pump House; repainting the Oregon Trail Library sign; and cleaning up around the Sam Boardman Memorial in the cemetery.

Boardman adopts medical marijuana dispensaries code At a special council meeting, held April 28, 2015, Boardman City Councilors unanimously adopted an ordinance changing language in the Boardman Development Code to accomplish the governance of medical marijuana facilities within the city.

Oregon Senate Bill 1531 was signed into law on March 19, 2014, giving local jurisdictions the ability to adopt regulations governing the operations of medical marijuana facilities. The city had no such

regulations, leaving no clear guidance should such a business be proposed. In response to the bill, the Councilors adopted an ordinance setting a moratorium on medical marijuana facilities until May 1, 2015.

The change to the Development Code provides required language for governance of medical marijuana dispensaries and medical marijuana grow facilities in two commercial sub-districts, Tourist Commercial and Service Center.

Some of the language includes review of proposed facilities for compatibility with Minor Child Safety Areas in the Municipal Code, a requirement the facility be licensed by the Oregon Health Authority, sets the hours of operation, prohibits on-site consumption of products, and limits the size of signs for the businesses to 100 square feet per building face. All of the language changes to the Boardman Development Code can be found at the city’s website at www.cityofboardman.com .

Local students graduate from OSU CORVALLIS, Ore – Oregon State University will hold its 146th commencement on Saturday, June 13, beginning at 10:30 a.m. in Reser Stadium.

OSU is one of the few large universities in the nation to hand out students’ actual diplomas during the commencement ceremony.

The commencement speaker is Howard K. Koh, director of the Leading Change Studio at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health. Koh, who served as the nation’s 14 Assistant Secretary for Health for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, will receive an honorary doctorate.

Recycling in Morrow County When loading garbage for the Transfer Stations, please keep in mind we have a separate WOOD bin and a separate METAL bin.

These items are not put in with regular household garbage, but are recycled. So please keep the wood and metal separated out for easy recycling.

Letters to the Editor To the Editor The Port Of Morrow is well positioned to help attract jobs to the region and support local industry. Our location, infrastructure, and advanced communications, all make us an attractive option for shipping in and out of the Columbia.

But growing economic activity at the Port requires a market at the other end of the line for us to ship products to. That is why we are closely watching the votes in Congress for Trade Promotion Authority, TPA as it is called, authorizes the negotiation of trade agreements with nations in Asia and elsewhere that will be key trade partners in the 21st Century. That is why we are glad to see Senator Ron Wyden supporting this critical piece of creating a strong trade policy.

Running a successful port includes many critical factors, but having access to markets for our goods is a lynchpin for economic success in Morrow County. We encourage our leaders to quickly approve Trade Promotion Authority.

ESD Announces 2015 Crystal Apple Award Winners PENDLETON – The InterMountain Education Service District is proud to announce the winners of the 2015 Crystal Apple “Excellence in Education” Awards. The IMESD honored 53 education staff members from 18 school districts and the IMESD. Two award ceremonies were planned: May 11 to honor educators from Union County school districts and May 20 to honor educators from Umatilla-Morrow County school districts.

Each year, the IMESD, along with local school districts, recognizes teachers and other education staff for their dedication and commitment to students, as well as for their willingness to go above and beyond their regular duties in schools. Nominations are submitted over a two-month period by administrators, coworkers, parents, students and community members. Winners are selected from these nominations by school district administration.

May 5, 1922 Mr. W.H. Mefford is busy making cement blocks for his new eight-room house.

Boardman teachers have accepted positions elsewhere, although they were re-elected.

The Boardman Cheese Factory Board elected O.W. King, President, A.P. Ayers, Vice President and S.H. Boardman, Secretary “Seed Potato Improvement”, a Valuable Potato Growing Bulletin is available from C.A. Calkins, the County Agent’s office. The circular deals with selecting seed potatoes; treating them before planting, cutting the seed, etc., 600 Baby Chicks Received by Parcel Post. Our local postmistress

reports that to date there have been over 600 baby chicks received at the Boardman Post Office. We suggest that Uncle Sam invest in some brooders.

An airplane from Stanfield flew over our peaceful farms and school was dismissed Thursday to permit the pupils to go down to view the aeroplane in town for the day.

Grace Partlow, daughter of A. Partlow, fell off the roof of her house this week and had the back luck to break her arm.

The Boardman Hay Grower’s Association. Ira Berger, Director of the Boardman District of the Oregon Hay Grower’s Association, made his report at the School House Monday afternoon, to a large attendance of members. His report dwelled upon the urgent need of rearrangement of the present unfair plan of apportioning directors. One district has only one member, while Boardman has forty-four members and only one Director. A lengthy discussion ensured in which nearly all members took part and much criticism of the management was discussed.

Only $3.00 per ton has been paid so far this season, and that very recently. Mr. Berger refused a reelection, and W.A. Cobb was named to survive him as a director.

Everyone hopes to see the Association work, but there is doubt.

Boardman will host the annual meeting of the Presbyterian Society for 1923 some time next April.

14-15, Mrs. Sam H. Boardman, of our local church, was appointed secretary of literature for this district.

A Water Wheel Experiment is being done on the West End of Boardman. Dick Kelly, for many years water service man for the Oregon Washington RR, is working on this. It is a type of water wheel that uses the power of the current to lift water for irrigation.

The community is watching this with much hope.

Glen and Delbert Carpenter this week purchased from the Boardman Garage the Walt Cahoon Brisco and the Burt Schane Brisco.

They hope of getting one first class car out of the two.

May 12, 1922 Mrs. Johnson, the county nurse was in Boardman last week. If the Tubercular Association works in conjunction with the Red Cross Nursing Association, she will be with us again in the fall.

The report, left by the county nurse shows that 87 children were examined. Six had defective eyes, 38 bad tonsils, and 11 gland problems. Fifteen cases were corrected and more will be. The personal hygiene of the pupils has been greatly improved by the Modern Health Crusade.

The Boardman Cheese Association plans a building on the Highway. The directors met Tuesday night on the progress of the business, which is on the upgrade.

A plan being formed includes a neat building on the Columbia River

Highway in Boardman, which will be used for increased factory facilities, and also a department for the serving of dairy lunches as a means of advertising their product.

John Jenkins is very ill with ptomaine poisoning.

May 19, 1922 A new Depot will be built at Boardman soon. The Boardman Commercial Club has received correspondence from the Portland offices of the Oregon Washington Rail Road and Navigation Company confirming that construction of the Depot will commence as soon as materials can be assembled.

This is a cause for rejoicing and ends a long campaign effort for service.

26 May 1922 When to cut alfalfa? The Oregon Co-Operative Hay Growers share results from a series of experiments by the Colorado Experiment Station to determine the best time to cut alfalfa hay. The protein content is high when alfalfa is 10% in bloom, but the real feeding value is highest when alfalfa is 25% in bloom.

When it becomes riper than this it seriously deteriorates. Many farmers are cutting their first alfalfa before it is this far advanced, in order

to prevent the cheat grass from becoming over-ripe.

The Boardman PTA finally comes to life after months of comparative inactivity. They have been aroused to action over a tentative suggestion of the school board that it might be a good time to curtain the work in the manual training and domestic science departments.

Since both teachers resigned, one or the other of the positions might be eliminated, or both put on a part time basis. The consensus of the meeting called by the PTA was unanimous for the continuation of the work. As one lady put it, “We might as well shut up the school as to take out the vocational work!”

Lumber on Ground for New Depot Here. A carload of lumber and cement has been sidetracked at Boardman to be used in constructing the foundation of the new depot. A pumping plant is to be installed to draw water 500 feet from the river for the cement work.

First Commencement Umatilla High School. Last Friday marked the close of Umatilla school, when the first graduates of the high school were given diplomas. The present district was organized in 1889. The high school was established two years ago. The two young ladies who finished the course, Ruby Powell and Lotys Daves are the first and only alumnae of Umatilla High School.

Morrow County students advance to County Spelling Contest Heppner – Thirteen students from Morrow County recently won the spelling contests at their individual schools and have advanced to compete at the county-level contest on May 11 in Pendleton.

According to Theresa ProctorReece, ELL Teacher/Coordinator at Windy River Elementary and Riverside High School, the Morrow County School District has been participating in the spelling con-

test for at least 30 years.

The InterMountain ESD sponsors the annual spelling contest.

At the school level, each Talented and Gifted (TAG) Coordinator presents a test sent to them from the IMESD. There are three divisions: Division 1 (1st-5th grades), Division 2 (6th-8th grades), and Division 3 (9th-12th grades).

At the county contest May 11, the first place winner from each di-

vision will be invited to compete at the state competition, which occurs on the Saturday of Labor Day weekend in Salem at the Oregon State Fair.

“I do believe contests like this are important for our students.

They allow them to showcase something they are good at. The contest also shows who really understands morphographs or prefixes, roots, and suffixes because

most of the words are not phonetically spelled,” said Proctor-Reece.
