Music in the Parks: Free Summer Concert series heats up in July at Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks

The Wasteland Kings are on stage July 3 in Irrigon. Hailing from La Grande, they have been packing venues since 2008. Influenced by the sounds of Steve Earle, The Stones, Townes Van Zant, Muddy Waters and The Pogues, the Wasteland Kings adds their own unique twist to a repertoire of popular music.

Brady Goss performs on July 10 in Boardman. Goss was described from an early age as piano phenom. Today he is recognized as an electrifying entertainer. Those who have witnessed his live shows are awed by his formidable keyboard speed and soulful vocals, loaded with passion that keep fans of all ages wanting more.

Brass Fire is back for a repeat performance July 17 in Irrigon. Brass Fire’s large ensemble includes saxophones, trumpets, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, and drums. Be prepared for music made popular by a large variety of artists from Chicago to Earth Wind and Fire or Elvis to Santana. Brass Fire spans a musical range from the Big Band era music through blues, soul, and on to the rock music of the 70’s and 80’s.
On July 24, One Trick Pony will be in Boardman. One Trick Pony is a tribute to the music of singer-songwriter Paul Simon. Covering songs from the 60’s Simon & Garfunkel days, 70’s hits, and beyond, musician Michael Trew draws the audiences into spirited sing-alongs. Michael has been touring the US regularly since 2008.

Irrigon welcomes Calico Bones on July 31. Calico Bones is a folk, indie, Americana sister act from Wallowa, OR. This duo is known for their tight harmonies, rhythmic instru-

mentation, and variety. Finding inspiration in multiple genres makes for a unique sound. Their style can range from soft, melancholy vocalizing to belting at the top of their lungs and everything in between.
The concerts are free to the public and begin at
7 p.m. on Monday nights. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets. The series is funded by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District and sponsored by the North Morrow Community Foundation. In the event of inclement weather, Boardman performances will be held at the SAGE Center and Irrigon performances will be held at the Irrigon Senior Cen
New AWS short film series celebrates the
local community in eastern Oregon
Fourth grade friends and small business owners, rodeo athletes, singer-songwriters, robotics whiz kids, star bakers and inspirational teachers. They are all part of this tightknit community in eastern Oregon, and they are all connected to Amazon Web Services (AWS).
“Data Centered: Eastern Oregon,” is a five-part short-documentary series looking at the real-life impact of the more than $15 billion investment AWS has made in the local community, and how the company supports jobs, generates economic growth, provides skills training and education, and unlocks opportunities for local businesses and suppliers. The series launched today with the drop of the first video, showcasing the story of small business owner Alma Nuñez Lezama of Xocolatl Bakery.
The idea for the series was inspired by the local relationships and connections AWS has cultivated since it began constructing and operating data centers in eastern Oregon in 2011. During that time, AWS has worked in close collabora-
tion with local schools, community-based organizations, and many local businesses.

“AWS is proud to call eastern Oregon home, and as our presence has grown in the region, we’ve continued to deepen our commitment to the community,” said Cornelia Robinson, Head of Inclusion and Outreach, AWS. “We see this series as a way to honor this community and elevate the stories we’ve heard over the years of how lives and livelihoods have been made better by the cloud.”
AWS began working on the series more than six months ago, filming on location to tell the stories of its five inspiring subjects. In addition to Lezama, who we see preparing custom designed cookies for her biggest AWS commission yet, the series also follows fencing contractors Shawn Eng and Ted Brittner as they strengthen the foundation for a business they hope to pass to the next generation; AWS data center employees Dallin Puzey, Fidel Contreras, and Tasha Engum who are excelling in their careers without
having previous tech experience; Blue Mountain Community College teacher Pete Hernberg and his latest class of data center technicians in training; and the award-winning robotics team of Umatilla High School as they gear up for another year of competition. Together with their family and friends, they share their stories, their passion for their hometowns, and their hopes and dreams for the future.
The first episode of the series is now available, and subsequent episodes in the series will release every other Wednesday until the end of July. The videos can be watched on the AWS YouTube Channel and on the About Amazon blog.
Later this year, AWS will host a community celebration to close out the series and honor its subjects. More information on the community celebration will be shared at a later date. Watch the trailer for a deeper look at the series and watch the first episode now: https:// www .youtube.com/ watch?v=hc7ErWr_gvs.

“Data Centered” launches today and shines a spotlight on people whose lives are being changed for the better by the cloud.

City of Boardman appoints new public works director
The City of Boardman is pleased to announce the appointment of Rolf Prag to lead the city’s Public Works Department. The Department has six full-time employees and serves the city’s essential needs in the areas of roads, bridges, and water and sewer utilities for its residents, as well as for those who work and do business within the city. He will be replacing former Public Works Director Kevin Kennedy who retired at the end of May after 26 years with the city’s public works department.
Mr. Prag has been working at the city in the position of Special Projects Coordinator since March of 2022. In that position he worked very closely with the public works department, which made him a natural fit to be elevated to this leadership role.
With more than 26 years of public works experience ranging from flood management, water resources, and transportation, to community infrastructure planning, the city is very confident that he will serve admirably to improve the Boardman community while building and maintaining positive relationships with those the city serves.
Prior to joining the city, Mr. Prag worked as the Sites and Utility Supervisor for the Port of Morrow for 26 years. He grew up in Boardman and has also raised his family in Boardman.

“I am excited and honored to be selected as the public Works Director for the City of Boardman. The past 16 months working as part of the team has prepared me to step in to this role and hit the ground running. Boardman has been a
great place to live and now working for the City of Boardman allows me to give back to this place I call home” Rolf Prag said.

On June 8, 2023, the Oregon Higher Education Coordinating Commission (HECC) reviewed and approved Blue Mountain Community College’s application for a new “Unmanned Aircraft Systems” Associate of Applied Science program. The U.S. Department of Education classification designated and approved for this new program is 36.0207 – Remote Aircraft Pilot. With this approval, the twoyear AAS UAS is financial aid eligible for students.
“We look forward to this training opportunity and with our workforce partners, we will continue striving to meet current and future workforce needs” says Tammy Krawczyk, Dean of Regional Workforce & Community Education for BMCC.
Years prior, BMCC offered two non-credit certificates, which were not eligible for financial assistance. BMCC was the first cohort of 27 colleges nationwide to receive certification from the Federal Aviation Administration for Unmanned Aircraft Systems Collegiate Training Initiative in 2020.

UAS for-credit courses including UAS101 and UAS211
