Umatilla Landing Days, the Hermiston Variety Show, and the Amboy Territorial Days. The ladies also volunteer their time singing in local assisted living homes. The style of music they perform ranges from 1930’s standards, Big Band Swing music, hits of the 50’s and the 60’s, and popular Contemporary and Country tunes. The band Los Potrillos de Nayarit will perform on July 9th at the Boardman Marina Park, located off of N. Main Street on Marine Drive. This band is a local Norteno (Spanish country) band from Hermiston, OR. Los Potrillos de Nayarit is made up of four members and consists of an accordion, bass, 12 string guitar and drums. They have been playing music at various events for over six years. Their music consists of ballads, true legends and stories from the past both semi slowpaced rhythm and cumbias which are a semi-fast paced rhythm. They are excited and delighted to play for Music in the Parks for the first time. Cruise Control melodies that bring back the memories of special occasions and invite the listener to reminisce over experiences that used to be so clear. Feel free to tap your toe, dance, or just sing along, whichever makes you happy. From time to time the band provides an open mic for people in the audience to display their talents or fulfill their dream of singing with a rock band. Irrigon Marina Park. The Buttercreek Boys feature Lou Reeves, guitar; Winn Weston, guitar; Curt Claughon, stand-up bass; Rusty Roe, saxophone; and Jim Simpson, banjo and harmonica. In addition, several of the musicians share in the vocals. They also invite the crowd to sing along, if the music moves them. The Buttercreek Boys can be seen performing regularly in the Hermiston community. Alternating between Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks. DRYING AND ROASTING SEEDS Kids looking for something to do this summer? Here’s a project that is fun for the kids (and Mom, too!) plus you get to enjoy the seeds of your labor! SUNFLOWER SEEDS Harvesting Cut the sunflower heads with a stem about one foot long. Hang upside down in a dry location with good air circulation. Tie a cloth bag around each head to catch any seeds which might drop during drying. (How about those old, tired out pantyhose?) Roasting When seeds are dry, mix thoroughly 2 cups of unwashed dry seeds, ½ teaspoon Worcestershire sauce, 1½ Tablespoons melted butter, and 1 teaspoon salt. Place in a shallow baking pan and roast (one hour at 250°F; 30 minutes at 275°F oven; or 10-15 minutes at 300°F.) Be sure to stir the seeds frequently as they roast. Variation If a salty sunflower seed is desired, soak the seeds in a salt solution (2 teaspoons or more salt per quart of water) for 24 hours before drying. PUMPKIN AND SQUASH SEEDS Wash the seeds carefully to remove the clinging fiber. Dry the seeds in a dehydrator at 115°-120°F until crisp or in the oven at 150°F for 1-2 hours, stirring frequently. For roasted seeds or salty flavored seeds follow instructions given for roasting sunflower seeds above. STORING Place seeds in a plastic bag and store. If to be kept a long time, put in the refrigerator or freezer. The seeds will become rancid if stored at room temperature for long periods of time. Source: OSU Master Food Preserver Program

City of Boardman reminds residents of local candidate filing

The Boardman Clerk’s Office reminds residents that the official candidate filing period for the November 6, 2018 election is quickly approaching. The city has three councilor positions open for election this year. Interested parties must be at least 18 years of age and reside within the city limits. They must have also lived within the city limits 12 months immediately preceding election day and registered to vote no less than 20 days immediately preceding the election. Residents who wish to file for City Council can come to Boardman City Hall to pick up filing packets Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The deadline for filing for city council is 5:00pm, August 28, 2018. Boardman to sponsor communitywide clean up in July
The City of Boardman will sponsor a community-wide clean-up the month of July. The City has garbage vouchers available, with a fifty-dollar limit, to residents of the City of Boardman. The vouchers are valid during the month of July at Finley Butte Landfill and the North Morrow Transfer Station. The garbage voucher program encourages citizens to clean up their residences by disposing of yard debris. City residents may pick up their vouchers at Boardman City Hall at 200 City Center Circle beginning June 29, 2018. For more information on this program, call Boardman City Hall at 481-9252.

Tallman Farms to open the Farmers Cup coffee shop
The 16x40 ft. building was brought in and placed, now to get it wired and plumbed. The Tallmans plan to serve coffee, teas, energy drinks and smoothies. “Sometime in September we will be open for business, said Terry Tallman we are both getting excited.”
Cheryle Tallman displays some spring produce from the farm The Tallman family, father Keith, and sons Tim, and Terry bought some acreage east of Boardman on the south side of the freeway off exit 165 in 1992 and a few years later started growing watermelons and cantaloupe. They also did custom farming around the area for a lot of the local farmers . Their partnership on custom farming ended in 1997 and in 1999. Terry ran for and got the job as Morrow County Judge, and Cheryle worked at Pioneer Hospital in Heppner with Hospice and Home Health for 25 years Although both were working full time jobs they started growing flowers and produce back on a smaller portion of the family farm. Both retired now Terry and Cheryl Tallman are planning to open a 16X40’ coffee shop at Tallman Farm’s present location on Laurel Lane Road in Boardman. The new coffee shop will be called The Farmers Cup. The projected date to open the new shop is mid September. It will have both a drive by and walk up window with some sit down service as well. They will serve coffee, teas, energy drinks, smoothies and also fresh garden products they grow on the farm Cheryl stated, “We are working hard to get this project underway. We have had a lot of cooperation from the community and local people and agencies.”
Tallman Farm is now open selling summer produce such as cucumbers, potatoes, and zucchini. As the summer continues they will have other crops for purchase like peppers, tomatoes, broccoli, beets and melons of all kinds. The Tallmans also have flowers for sale. If you are planning a wedding, reunion, celebration or just want fresh cut flowers they have gladiolas and dahlias. Make sure to call ahead to find out when they will be ready. The Tallman’s have been married for 44 years and enjoy spending time with their three children, Jonathan, Crystal and Derrin and granddaughter, Cora. Farming is in their blood and they are enjoying the hands on work and selling their produce to the community. Look for signs to Tallman Farm, and The Farmers cup to open soon off exit 165, south of the freeway at 460 Laurel Lane Road just up the hill from Pacific Pride. Tallman Farm is open 6 days a week with morning hours from 7am to 2 pm, and evening hours from 5 to 8 pm. Please call to make sure they are open. Use of RV for permanent dwelling restricted in Morrow County Summer time is here! The use of recreational vehicles will increase with the warm weather and fun summer activities. The use of an RV is great for camping and use in RV parks. Morrow County encourages the use of RV’s for these purposes but there are restrictions on recreational vehicle use that everyone needs to be aware of. The use of a recreational vehicle as a permanent dwelling outside of an RV Park is not allowed within Morrow County. Recreational vehicles are not designed for residential purposes according to standards and specifications of the Uniform Building Code which has been established to protect public health, safety and welfare. There
are options for a temporary use if needed but there are guidelines that must be followed. According to the Morrow County Zoning Ordinance Article 7 Variances Section 7.300 a person can use a recreational vehicle in the case of a medical hardship. This would be for a relative or other caregiver to care for or provide custody for an elderly, mentally handicapped, or infirm person whom a medical professional certifies needs this kind of care or custody. Temporary use of a recreational vehicle is another option. Temporary Use Permits may be approved to allow the limited use of structures or activities which are short
term or seasonal in nature and do not conflict with the zoning designation in which they are located. Under the Morrow County Zoning Ordinance Article 7 Variances Sec-
tion 7.400, recreational vehicles shall not be used for housing or residential purposes except:
1. When the recreational vehicle is located on an individual lot or parcel during the construction of a dwelling. The Zoning Authorization for the approved dwelling must also authorize this temporary use. 2. For temporary housing to accommodate visitors of the primary residence in a residential or farm use zone not to exceed 30 days in any 12-month period. Property owners found in violation of this requirement will be subject to enforcement action. 3. For seasonal recreational use (i.e. summer camping or hunting season) use by the land owner or lessee in the Forest Use
Zone after obtaining a Zoning Permit and Rural Address. Recreational vehicles are meant for temporary purposes such as special events or emergent needs. They are not meant to be used as a permanent dwelling unless in an RV park or properly permitted. Using them for camping in proper places is wonderful and encouraged. Please be mindful of the Morrow County Code Enforcement Ordinance and the Zoning Ordinance. Windy River student participated in TrackTown championship meet BOARDMAN – Pedro Chavez, a fourth-grade student from Windy River Elementary School, qualified to participate in the TrackTown Youth League Championship meet on June 9. The meet was held at Hayward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Chavez competed in the 100 meter, and long jump events. He participated in the local community track program. Pedro placed 16th in
the Boys 100 M (11-12 age group) and 13th in the Boys Long Jump (1112). While in Eugene, he had the opportunity to watch the NCAA Track and Field Championship meet, which happened before the TrackTown meet. The TrackTown meet featured more than 500 of the top youth athletes from around the state. The
TrackTown Youth League is open to all boys and girls ages 7 to 14 and according to the website “was created to encourage Oregon youth from all backgrounds and income levels to become healthy and active members of the community and inspire youth to participate in track and field.” More information can be found at www.tracktownyouthleague.com.

Notice of Morrow County surplus furniture liquidation Morrow County and Community Counseling Solutions will be offering surplus office furniture to the public FREE OF CHARGE. Furniture will be made available to all members of the public, individuals, and groups. Celebrate Caledonian Games at Athena July 14 & 15 Athena Caledonian Games gathers up friends and celebrates a great Scottish tradition in Athena, annually on the second full weekend of July. The Caledonian leaders consider 2018 a building year with new projects that are resulting from grants. For a new look in City Park, Caledonian will proudly fly event flags gifted from Wildhorse Foundation. Visitors can quickly identify where each event is located around City Park with teardrop-shaped flags. Colorful flags labeled Entertainment Center Stage, Clan Village, Celtic Harp and Storytelling, Piping Competition, Athletic Events and Highland Dance, locate all the major Caledonian events. Caledonian has achieved a Umatilla County Community Development grant for a kiosk placed in Athena City Park. The kiosk can be used for community and cultural events, as well as Caledonian history and current events. Caledonian is pleased to have a permanent, yet personal representation in Athena. Personal and up close is what Caledonian is all about. We have many experiences that qualify. For instance, our audiences love our experience when Boise Highlanders Pipe Band march in and make a
circle in the vendor’s area…..they even let people stand in the middle of the circle of pipers. Now that is closer than seeing the band on the field, you know. It is “up close and personal” and way cool. Our Shindig is really fun on Saturday morning (about 10:15 in the park immediately after our parade) and we have a piping and Highland dancing demonstration. We have heard from a lad from Boise whose lineage is Cherokee and Scottish and he is prepared to dance for us in Native costume and tell us about his heritage. We have storytelling by Mary Finny of Pendleton and realize how history is maintained and preserved through stories, myths and legends. We have clans who come from around the Pacific Northwest. Clan Macleay Pipe Band from Portland and the Boise Highlanders will perform at the Tattoo (6:30 PM on Saturday.) Athena Caledonian is the proud recipient of a grant from Umatilla County Cultural Coalition. The grant inspired Cassandra Humphrey of Richland to come to Athena and teach Highland dancing. The response has been wonderful. There are about 12 Athena dancers, (age ranging from about 5 years old to age 12, or so) that
are preparing to dance at Caledonian to show off their kilts and their dancing ghillies (shoes) Saturday at 1:00 PM, Center Stage. These are Athena youngsters that are doing a dandy job. This is quite personal and we are proud. You may step up and throw the CABER in Saturday’s athletic competition if you’d like. (Register at www.athenacaledoniangames.org). Your score is counted from your best throw of two tries. Alan Wernsing has the stats, keeps the equipment and is ready for you to challenge yourself. The athletic competition draws competitors from all over the Pacific Northwest, professional or rank amateur. (They compete side by side and have a blast.) That all kicks off at noon on Saturday and you’ll find things flying though the air over by the Big Green Tent on the athletic field until almost 6 pm. On Sunday, a new program after the annual outdoor church service (9:30 AM Sunday) in the park will feature our local heritage. We are recreating the Picnic and Games that were celebrated in Athena at first in 1899. Bring a blanket and have a picnic lunch purchased from our vendors (11:15 AM Sunday) and enjoy the Caledonian CEILIDH. A Ceilidh,
pronounced kay-lee, is a party. You may wish to participate in the Way We Were by showing off treasured items from your family (or Caledonian, or Athena, or Umatilla County, or Oregon or not) at the open mic. We’ll have friends sharing family secrets, bagpipes by the Athena Royal Highland Guard Pipe Band, Highland dancing by our own Athena dance class of the Mid Columbia School of Highland Dance, food and friends together. What more could you ask for in a ceilidh? Again, this is down-right fun. That’s what Caledonian is all about. Athena Caledonian Games offers Scottish sports, music, Highland dancing, storytelling, Celtic harp and displays. In the tradition of the Highland Games around the world, Athena Caledonian might be small but we have a great time. Our competitions in piping and Scottish athletic field games are sanctioned. he Community Women’s Club of Irrigon and Boardman is pleased to recognize our graduates that received scholarships for 2018. The recipients of the $750.00 scholarships were Ethan Greer of Irrigon and Paul Diaz of Boardman. Taylor Davis and Lizeth Nunez of Irrigon received $500.00. Skyler Wightman and Luis F. Olvera from Boardman also received $500.00. The Community Women’s Club has been giving out scholarships to deserving graduates who not only achieve good grades, but also embody our mission of community service, for over 36 years. lue Mountain Community College’s Workforce Training Center in Boardman will be open this summer, Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 6 pm. Students are reminded that assistance with registration, financial aid and other student affairs is available at the WTC, 251 Olson, in Boardman. Summer hours are in effect until August 30. Students planning to attend BMCC in the fall should use the summer to get registered for classes and finish up any necessary paperwork to make sure their financial aid is in order. Stop by the Workforce Training Center for assistance. Harold Charles Baker Boardman August 8, 1928- May 24, 2018 Harold Charles Baker was born on 8-18-28 in Longview, Washington to Adeline (Gent) and William Baker. In 1930 the family, which included his older brother Willard and sister LaVerne moved to Boardman. There he met the love of his life, Mildred Miller. They started dating when Mildred was a freshman and he was a junior in high school. He graduated from Boardman High School in 1946. In May of 1948 he joined the U.S. Air Force, the first year of its existence. They married on December 21, 1952, after dating for 8 years. Not completely sure he wanted children, Mildred convinced him otherwise. They had Ron in 1954 and Randy in 1955. He was convinced and the family grew to include Karen in 1959 and Kris in 1962. It is hard to imagine there was anything he was more proud of, until the grandkids came along, and then the great grandkids. As a business man in a small town he wore many hats. With the steady paychecks of Mildred’s teaching and his mail route, the family had an income base to try other businesses. He operated a crane that loaded bombs on river barges and he developed the first third of the Bombing Range Road with his father-in-law’s dozer. He was a Rural
Mail Carrier for 35 years, once having the shortest mail route in the state of Oregon. He built the Frosty Shake Drive-In and trailer court in the old town of Boardman. When the town was relocated he built the Nomad Restaurant. He was one of the key businessmen that planned the relocation of Boardman in 1967. He also built a trailer court in Pomeroy, WA. All during this time he was a farmer at heart. He raised alfalfa. Eventually he went into the custom hay business in Oregon and Washington. He loved to build things. Over the years he built four houses for his family out of open sagebrush property. Family was always included in the businesses, creating a strong work ethic in his children. He is survived by his Friend of 80 plus years and wife for 65 of them, Mildred. His four children: Ron (Glaya) Baker, Randy (Kathy) Baker, Karen Purcell and Kris (R.B.) Dorran. His grandchildren: Brandi (Manolo) Zavala, Jared (Norma Ayala) Purcell, Kevin (Bridgette) Baker, Keith Baker, Kenna Purcell, and Charlie (Mariah) Baker, and 11 great grandchildren (with another this fall). There was be a graveside service at 10:00 AM on June 2, 2018 at the Riverview Cemetery in Boardman with a luncheon and celebration of life at noon at the Boardman Senior Center. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Boardman Senior Center.
