Morrow County summer internships now open for applications The Port of Morrow, in partnership with regional industries, is announcing over 50 summer internships available for the summer 2021 season. Prospective interns can choose from a diverse set of opportunities that include farming, food processing, education, business, information technology, workforce development, and more.

Columbia Works was established to link regional employers with high school and college students who are looking to gain experience in their prospective career field.

Columbia Works is part of the Oregon Works network that has seen success in different regions across the state. Initially designed by the McMinville Economic Development Partnership, the model has been adapted to fit Morrow County business needs.

Columbia Works is promoting internship opportunities from thirteen employers this year. The positions are listed online at www.columbiaworks.org. The application period is open through April 1, 2021.

The Good Shepherd Lutheran Church core group began in 1950, meeting at the Boardman High School and Grange Hall to hold their services.

In 1988, the group purchased about 4 1/2 acres and constructed the church at its present location on Locust Road, Southwest. Through the years, a number of pastors and interns led the congregation, most part time.

Pastor Paul Berthelot served as pastor for twelve years, and then served as supervisor for the last intern, Mike Smith. The membership had dwindled due to people moving or passing away.

The presiding Council consists of Curt Gantenbein, President; Jo Gantenbein, Secretary; Joe Taylor , Treasurer and members at large, Arlene Berthelot and Donna Irons. Pastor Paul Berthelot serves as Pastor Emeritus.

The Council has sold their church building and 1 1/2 acres to the Boardman Food Pantry, closing the transaction on December 30, 2020. The sales price was $250,000, which included tables and chairs.

The church religious items were removed and donated to various churches. The Council plans to donate the proceeds to various charities they have supported throughout the years and some local non profits. The Council still oversees the three plus acres they own, and plans to divest that land in the future.

“It was a difficult decision to make to sell the church, but the Food Pantry will benefit,” says Joe Taylor.

The Boardman Food Pantry announced the official purchase of the (former) Good Shepherd Lutheran Church on December 30th. The papers were signed and the building was paid in full. As we are sure you can imagine, this is quite miraculous. The pantry first began operating from the First Baptist Church on March 20, 2020. Exactly seven months later, to the day, they received the keys to the Lutheran Church.

Now, a mere 9 months after opening, they have their our own facility, paid in full. This was only possible because of

The former church is now full of supplies for the Pantry. the generosity of the Boardman businesses and community, the state of Oregon, and countless fellow citizens who opened their hearts and wallets.

“We would love to share two Scriptures with you to coincide with today's date and with the time of purchase. They both seem so fitting - we just had to share.,” says Boardman Pantry Communications Officer, Shara Weiss.

Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center begins COVID-19 Vaccine Distribution with Moderna Walla Walla, WA — The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center (Walla Walla VA) began COVID-19 vaccination with the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Tuesday (December 22) following the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization for this vaccine.

“The Walla Walla VA is pleased to be offering the Moderna COVID19 vaccine to its health care personnel,” said Chris Bjornberg, Medical Center Director. “Receiving the vaccine is like having hope delivered.

As vaccine supplies increase, our ultimate goal is to offer COVID-19 vaccination to all Veterans and employees who want to be vaccinated.”

The Walla Walla VA is one of 113 VA Medical Centers across the country to receive the first limited supply of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. Sites were identified based on need for the vaccine according to CDC’s 1A prioritization and capacity to store the vaccine at 20æ%C.

The Moderna COVID-19 vaccine was 94 percent effective in clinical trials in preventing COVID-19 disease. The vaccine is administered in two doses, 28 days apart. The side effects appear similar to those of other vaccines and are short-lived.

Thirty-seven medical centers began offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine to health care personnel and Veterans Dec 14. Fifteen additional VA facilities will receive an allocation of PfizerBioNTech COVID-19 vaccine the week of December 21.

Even after receiving a COVID19 vaccination, it is important to note that employees, and Veterans should continue wearing face coverings, practicing physical distancing and washing hands often.

As vaccines become available for more groups of Veterans, Walla

Walla VA care teams will reach out to enrolled Veterans to schedule vaccinations. There is no need to preregister or come to a facility to sign up.

If a Veteran is not enrolled with the VA, they can check their eligibility by going to VA’s “how to apply for VA health care” site at https:/ /www.va.gov/health-care/how-toapply/. From this site, a Veteran can apply online or download the VA form 10-10EZ form.

Veterans can get up-to-date information on VA’s VA COVID-19 vaccine webpage, which launched on December 11, 2020, and sign up to receive regular updates on the vaccine on the VA’s Stay Informed page.

Governor’s recommended budget keeps community college funding flat SALEM, Ore. – Oregon Governor Kate Brown on Tuesday (Dec. 1, 2020) released the Governor’s Recommended Budget (GRB) for the 2021-23 biennium, which includes the same funding allocation of $640.9 million for community colleges it received for 2019-21.

Community colleges need $702 million to maintain their Current Service Level and keep tuition increases to 3.5% or below on average statewide. That’s about $61 million shy of what the Governor has recommended.

“We recognize the budgetary hardships every sector of state government has experienced due to COVID-19 and the devastating wildfires, and can appreciate the difficult choices the Governor had to make with the revenue available,” said Dr. Cam Preus, Executive Director of the Oregon Community College Association. “However, as Oregon’s workforce training experts, community colleges are critical to the state’s economic and family recovery. Adequate funding to support the colleges is vital to reviving the state’s workforce.”

Community colleges made significant adjustments to how they provided education and training to students when the Governor prohibited in-person instruction in March due to COVID-19. The colleges performed Herculean tasks of moving hands-on Career-Technical Education (CTE) training programs and other in-person services online, while continuing to support students’ basic needs, including food and access to the Internet. When the destructive wildfires further damaged the state’s communities, community colleges continued to adjust to support local families and industries, including providing emergency shelters and producing food through agriculture programs.

During the state’s economic downturn and increased workload on healthcare and emergency responders, community colleges trained frontline workers to help ease the load.

In a Tuesday briefing with media, Governor Brown indicated she was disappointed she could not recommend increased funding for higher education, and called community colleges Oregon’s “workhorses” because of their impact on the state’s economy and ability to train necessary workers.

By: Greg Smith Unfortunately, scammers are taking advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic in a variety of ways including submitting applications and receiving funding using another person’s identity. Victims may very well be unaware until they receive a letter from the Small Business Administration (SBA) informing them of payments due.

It is critical that those suspecting their identity has been stolen act quickly to limit financial loss and damage.

SBA officials recommend identity theft victims do ALL the following: 1. Contact the Processing and Disbursement Center to report suspected fraud by calling (800) 3666303. Their team will make a note to the file and place a hold on funds if they have not already been disbursed.

2. Notify the SBA Office of the Inspector General to report any suspected fraud on the OIG’s Hotline at 800-767-0385 or email OIGHotline@sba.gov.

3. Place a fraud alert on credit reports. Contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies.

Whichever company is contacted is required to tell the other two.

5. Contact the Oregon Attorney General’s Office at: 877-877-9392 or by emailing help@oregonconsumer.gov. It is possible to file an online complaint on their website by clicking the Consumer Protection tab.

6. Victims should contact the Social Security Administration as soon as possible, even if they are not sure their number has been compromised at 1-800-269-0271 or submit a report online at https://oig.ssa.gov.

Another Round of PPP is Coming While it is a good thing Congress has passed another round of Paycheck Protection Program funding (much of which is a forgivable loan), it does give scammers a new opportunity to steal someone’s identity.

It is critical that all people (not just business owners) take every precaution they can to protect their personal information. Our offices have received reports from non-business owners who received a letter from SBA stating an EIDL loan of several thousand dollars was taken out in their name and that a payment was due soon.

With that said, the PPP is an excellent program, and it is very much worth applying for. Business owners, and especially those who have not previously applied, should get their financial information in order now and equally important, research the allowable expenses so the loan may be forgiven.

EOU trapshooting club team leads region in Virtual Shotgun Bowl LA GRANDE, Ore. – Students from universities across the country competed in trapshooting events this fall when traditional varsity athletics were on hold.

Although the ACUI clay target league nationals were canceled last spring, the organization held a virtual nationals qualifier in October.

Eastern Oregon University’s Trapshooting team finished ninth in the nation and first in the West overall, beating out regional rivals. Over the course of the month, competitors recorded scores at their home ranges in four events: trapshooting, trap doubles, skeet shooting and skeet doubles. Team scores were tallied and validated, then announced earlier this month.

Even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, trapshooting events kept competitors outdoors and 9 feet apart. These gun safety regulations meant that the team could continue to compete throughout the fall.

In trapshooting events, EOU placed eighth in the nation and first in the West region, outshooting Boise State, University of Idaho, and other big name schools.

Unlike other years, the ACUI Virtual Shotgun Bowl Series grouped teams by region rather than size, so EOU competed against community and junior colleges, as well as large universities. The team’s highest scorer, Bryce Otley, hit 99 out of 100 targets.

“I was able to stay focused on school, and make connections with students I might have not met otherwise. I was also able to participate in a sport that will go beyond col-

EOU also has a casual trapshooting student club that welcomes first-time participants. This year, 65 students have participated in weekly club nights. Three women are on the competitive team, but the student club is largely made up of women. Assistant Coach Kathryn Shorts said it’s “a really empowering and stress-relieving activity.”

Men and women compete together on EOU’s Trapshooting team, but individual high scores are separated by gender. Freshman Savannah Shorts recorded the highest score among women on the team, placing 15th in the nation for women.

“If there is anything that I wish more people knew about trapshooting (besides the fact, no, we are not shooting traps and, no, we do not use blanks, we shoot live rounds), it’s that trapshooters are not scary,” Shorts said. “My sport is filled with kind people that want everyone to have a good time and be

successful.”

Eight of the 17 team members received trapshooting scholarships to attend EOU, and the program hopes to expand scholarship opportunities in the future.

By: Casey White-Zollman, CoChair, Pendleton Round-Up Tough Enough To Wear Pink PENDLETON, Ore. – The Pendleton Round-Up’s Tough Enough To Wear Pink may not have been able to take place in 2020, but that didn’t prevent the campaign from raising $11,000 for its causes.

The TETWP campaign today (Dec. 29, 2020) donated more than $11,000 to two local cancer support organizations.

The Round-Up Association’s TETWP split $11,000 raised in 2020 between the St. Anthony Hospital Cancer Care Clinic and the Kickin’ Cancer New Beginnings program. While contributions usually come from generous sponsors, donations, fundraising events, and merchandise sales, not having the 2020 Pendleton Round-Up meant no TETWP event. Instead, this year’s contributions came from two primary sources – the Let’er Buck Cares Fund and Oregon Grain Growers Brand Distillery (OGGB).

The Let’er Buck Cares Fund, which has raised more than $900,000 since June, was established by the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Boards of Directors through the Oregon Community Foundation to provide support to the community’s not-for-profits, service organizations, community groups and the local economy, all of which were immensely impacted by the lack of the Pendleton Round-

Up in 2020 due to COVID-19. The Let’er Buck Cares Fund donated $10,000 to TETWP in October in an effort to allow TETWP to continue to support its two benefactor organizations despite COVID-19.

In addition, OGGB, a distillery in Pendleton, held a fundraiser during what would have been TETWP day in September by donating a portion of proceeds from the day’s sales.

OGGB raised and donated $800 to TETWP from the fundraiser.

“It was devastating not being able to have TETWP in 2020,” said Casey White-Zollman, co-chair of the Round-Up’s TETWP campaign.

“That’s why we’re so appreciative of Let’er Buck Cares, OGGB and all of the community members who have continued to support others, including TETWP and breast cancer awareness, despite the challenging circumstances we’ve faced this year.”

TETWP not only raises breast cancer awareness to the thousands of visitors who come to the Round-Up each year, but 100 percent of the proceeds stay within the Pendleton community.

The two organizations benefiting from the TETWP campaign help local breast cancer patients from time of diagnosis through recovery. The Kick’n Cancer program provides free massage, personal training and Pilates classes for recovering patients, while the St. Anthony Cancer Care Clinic provides breast prosthetics, mastectomy bras, post-op camisoles, lymphedema sleeves, pads & gloves,

mastectomy swimwear, wigs, financial help and mileage reimbursement for cancer patients.

“COVID-19 may have kept us from holding our annual TETWP event and traditional campaign, but it didn’t stop the needs of the St. Anthony Cancer Care Clinic and Kick’n Cancer New Beginnings,” said Jill Gregg, co-chair of the Round-Up’s TETWP campaign.

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, questions have been pouring in to Ask an Expert, an online questionand-answer tool from Oregon State University’s Extension Service.

Questions have ballooned to 6,625 in the first half of 2020, more than all of the questions answered in 2019. About 250 experts, both faculty and volunteers, have stepped up admirably, according to Sandy Reichhuber, Extension’s Ask an Expert-co-coordinator.

“If we continue to grow at this rate, there won’t be any questions left unanswered and all Oregonians will be experts in gardening, food preservation, forestry, water quality and more,” Reichhuber said.

She’s kidding, but not by much.

With more than 100 questions pouring in in a day, experts are stretched thin, especially responding in the required 48 hours. Although most

“In the last fiscal year, forestry experts answered 346 questions, food preservation received 200,” Reichhuber said. “We aren’t just about gardening. We have experts in so many fields that the general public doesn’t even think about.”

Since its debut in 2011, more than 13,200 people have written to Ask an Expert. Each week, Reichhuber chooses one question out of the many that come in to feature as Question of the Week on the OSU Extension website.

Questions can be about serious topics such as food safety and poisonous plants; others are amusing, like the one in 2019 in Columbia County about which way to turn a

Gomolski retired to Hermiston in 2012 after a career in county government in Cook County, Illinois.

Since coming to Hermiston he has gotten involved with a number of clubs and organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, Rotary, and as an elected member of the Hermiston School Board.

Through November, Agape House handed out 9,286 food boxes and more than 11,000 weekend food backpacks for students, a program that was extended to year-round in light of COVID-19.

In October 2020 the board hired Julia Galan as an on-site house manager at Martha’s House, the drugfree transitional housing program with a facility at 305 SE 4th Street.

In 2020 the program has assisted 18 families with housing, education, workforce training, mentorship, and encouragement to assist their transition to a sustainable lifestyle.

Boardman Community Development Assoc. announces projects and grants given in 2020 Rural Broadband Capacity Program Grant (Business Oregon announce that CARES Act funds received by the state of Oregon have been allocated by the Oregon Legislative Assembly Joint Emergency Board to support broadband projects targeting unserved and underserved areas) – City of Boardman partnered with BCDA to provide high speed internet to City of Boardman Residence through a grant from Business Oregon for a total project valued at $780,000. This project will provide a high speed internet to over 85% of Boardman Residents. Rural residential high speed internet is a project forecasted for 2021. Service for this internet is provided by PDTfast.net.

Homebuyers Grant Program – This was one of our busiest years for our home buyers grant. We were able to offer assistance to 46 new home buyers in Boardman, totaling $230,000. Of these new homes, 20 were new construction homes.

Business Grant Program – We are pleased to offer this program to our local businesses to improve or grow their business. We had 8 businesses utilize our program for a total of a little over $95, 000.

This is a 1:1 match grant up to $25,00a0 total amount.

Community Enhancement Project Survey for 2021/2022 project priority list has been sent out on Boardman Chamber of Commerce Facebook page. We are asking our residents to please participate in our survey so we can get more feedback for our priority list. We usually have this meeting in person, but with current guidelines we have decided to do a survey and then follow up with a community Zoom meeting in a few weeks to discuss the results of the survey. Can you help us share this information with the community please.

Letter to the Editor To The Editor: I was interested in reading about Windmills and Solar parks being constructed in Morrow County and across the county. Of course, the land will also be covered with (toxic?) battery boxes to store electricity for times when the wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine.

How in the world did we let the powers that be get away with excluding hydro power as a renewable resource? That has even impacted the education of our children. My third-grade grand-daughter came home from school recently and remarked that her teacher said the Columbia River dams must come out to save the salmon.

We should all be careful about what our children are being taught and not be afraid to call our teachers out when they teach opinions and not fact.

Open Positions at this time, and upcoming appointments: Boardman area Alternate, Irrigon representative and Alternate and North County Alternate, Heppner, Lexington, Ione, North and South County Representation. Committee members shall become familiar with the operations, standards and financing needs of the Morrow County Road Department. Committee members shall provide advisory recommendations only to the Morrow County Board of Commissioners, Public Works Director and Assistant Road Master. These recommendations shall follow all County policies and consider all budgetary needs. Requests for appointment shall be presented to Public Works in writing by the candidate. Public Works shall provide these to the Morrow County Board of Commissioners for approval and appointment.
