SAGE Center offers FREE admission on second Saturday of each month

The SAGE Center is offering FREE admission for EVERYONE on the second Saturday of each month during their open hours (10 a.m. - 5 p.m.). This is an extension of the already popular SAGE Saturday which previously offered free admission to families from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. during planned kids activity time. They are still continuing with this wonderfully popular program but will now expand the FREE admission for the entire day to include anyone who would like to discover what is inside at the Sustainable AGriculture and Energy Center. This monthly FREE day will only continue during the school year and begins this January 12th and ends for the season on May 11th. They continue to welcome outside organizations to partner with them for a SAGE Saturday “Takeover”. Groups or businesses can use this as an opportunity for outreach and giving back to their community. Contact their Education Coordinator, Stefanie Swindler, at 541-481-7243 for more information.

Their Movie Weekend falls on the third Friday of each month. They will be showing Aladdin on Friday, January 18th at 7, and again on Saturday, January 19th at 2:15 p.m. Admission is just $3 per person and includes popcorn. Monthly business sponsors help to continue this program and receive free passes to distribute to employees.

This is a great time to renew or purchase an annual SAGE Center pass.

The fee is $25 for an individual or $50 for a family and allows unlimited visits during their open hours which are Monday – Friday, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. Regular admission rates are as follows:

Keystone donates 1,000 pounds of food to new BMCC food pantry for students PENDLETON, Ore. – Keystone RV in Pendleton on December 21st will deliver more than 1,000 pounds of non-perishable food to Blue Mountain Community College to assist with the opening of “The Den,” its new food pantry for food insecure students.

“BMCC is so appreciative of the employees at Keystone for their generous donation to our food pantry,” said BMCC Interim President Dr. Connie Green. “It’s so heartwarming to see a partner in our community step up to help our students.”

The donation came about when BMCC Success Coach Joey GrosJacques, a former Keystone employee, heard about the College’s new food pantry and recalled Keystone put on a food drive each year as a competition between their production plants in Pendleton. He contacted Keystone’s Human Resources Manager Courtney Wallis to inquire if the company had already identified a recipient of the food drive and to inform her of BMCC’s new food pantry. While Keystone typically donates its food drive collections to multiple organizations, the RV company this year decided to instead donate everything to BMCC’s food pantry.

the College was doing, and that it could help our students when times are tough,” GrosJacques said.

Last year, BMCC conducted a study to identify the level of food insecurity among its students throughout the district. The study identified that more than 45% of responding students cut the size of their meals or skipped meals in the past year because they didn’t have enough money for food, and that this occurred almost every month for nearly 20% of them. Forty-three percent said that in the past year, they went hungry because there wasn’t enough money for food.

These results led BMCC to pursue a food pantry for students in Morrow Hall. A $2,000 donation from the BMCC Foundation, $1,000 from Altrusa of Pendleton, $700 from the Vista Program, and $450 from BMCC’s Innovation Fund helped jumpstart the program. In addition to “The Den” in Morrow Hall in Pendleton, there will be smaller food pantry options at BMCC’s locations in MiltonFreewater, Hermiston and Boardman.

Keystone will deliver the pallets of food to BMCC at 10 a.m. Friday. Work study students will assist staff to help move food into “The Den” food pantry in Morrow Hall.

City of Boardman offers curbside Christmas tree pick up The City of Boardman will once again offer curbside pickup of Christmas trees. Residents are asked to place their tree at their curb, away from garbage containers, to avoid extra garbage charges. The Public Works Department will be around each morning, Monday through Friday, to pick them up through January 18, 2018. The Christmas trees will be burned once they dry out.

Nominations open for Regional Teacher of the Year PENDLETON – If you have a few spare moments over the holidays, think about taking a minute to nominate your favorite teacher in eastern Oregon for the Regional Teacher of the Year award.

Nominations are now open at the Oregon Teacher of the Year website: www.oregonteacheroftheyear.org. Nominations are open through January 31, 2019.

Anyone can nominate a teacher from any Oregon school district. The InterMountain ESD encourages school staff, students, parents and community members to nominate teachers from its school districts in Baker, Morrow, Umatilla and Union counties. “It’s great to have people nominate teachers they know and admire, so we have a bigger pool of applicants from which to choose our recipient,” said Michele Madril, Director of Communication for the IMESD. Each Education Service District in Oregon will choose a Regional Teacher, who will receive a cash prize of $500. One of the Regional Teachers of the Year will be named the 2020 Oregon Teacher of the Year in September 2019.

City of Boardman Snow & Ice Control Program We all know how unpredictable the weather can be in our area. We have experienced winters (normally December, January and February) with no snow accumulation, to winters such as we’ve had in the past that deposited heavy snow accumulation.

With a population of over 3500 and 80 plus lane-miles of streets, the City is continually striving to provide an acceptable level of snow and ice control.

NORMAL SNOW CONDITIONS Our fleet of snow removal equipment is readied before the ice and snow seasons each year. One, fiveyard dump truck with sanding box and plow, 2.5-ton dump truck with sanding box and plow, and a 1-ton pickup with sanding box and plow, combined with a crew of trained equipment operators, will keep major streets passable.

The City has established procedures and policies for addressing snow plowing and sanding of the streets. The procedures and policies are set on a priority basis, which set predetermined routes as follows: First Priority: All main streets and main intersections considered to be the highest priorities to keep open the main streets and roadway systems connecting the fire station, police station, emergency medical services, and schools.

Second Priority: Other streets and selected areas such as steep hills and other problem areas identified by the public works department and/or police department.

Third Priority: Residential Streets CITIZEN RESPONSIBILITIES Snow can be beautiful, but it also can create hazards. When residents fail to clear their sidewalks, the result can be a treacherous ice patch.

We need your help in protecting pedestrians from possible injury.

Residents are responsible to maintain their sidewalks and driveways adjacent to their property.

Please pile snow on your yard, not in the street. If your sidewalk is icy, you may correct the hazard by applying a heavy coat of sand.

Handicapped, elderly or other individuals unable to clean snow from their sidewalks may choose to contact someone to do this job for them.

A: Our primary duty is to open and keep open the main roadway system.

Considering the large number of

driveways and amount of sidewalks in the City, it is too costly and time consuming, and would require additional City staff and equipment to perform this service.

Q: Why not plow to the center?

A: Plowing snow and piling it to the center of a street causes a hazardous situation. Traffic flow is restricted by eliminating a portion of a lane and this practice can also create sight obstructions for low vehicles. The freeze-thaw cycle creates daily problems when the melting snow freezes on the road surface every evening.

Q: Can I park my car on the street?

A: Yes, on those streets where parking is normally allowed. However, having to maneuver a snowplow in and out between parked vehicles can not only be dangerous, but also nerve-wracking for our drivers and is not an efficient way to plow the snow. One must be aware that if a car is parked on the side of the street, we could plow your car in with a snow bank.

Q: Why are residential streets seldom plowed?

A: With over 80 lane miles of streets to maintain, with limited equipment and staff, it is usually not possible to plow all of the streets. We make every effort to get to the lower priority streets when conditions allow.

Morrow County Planning news...

On December 4, 2018, the Morrow County Planning Commission met in Boardman, Oregon at the Port of Morrow Riverfront Center and held four planned public hearings. The results were approvals for two seperate Land Partitions, one in the greater Heppner area and another in the greater Lexington area; a Hardship Variance allowing the temporary use of a recreational vehicle as a dwelling outside Boardman; and a recommendation to the Board of Commissioners to adopt a rezone of the mill site within the tree farm applying the Port Industrial use zone.

The next Morrow County Planning Commission public hearing will be held on January 22, 2019, in Heppner, Oregon at the Bartholomew Building. There will be at least two public hearings scheduled for this meeting: one for a replat via property line adjustment and one for a Hardship Variance to allow the use of a RV as a dwelling.

During the months of November Morrow County Planning Department staff issued four developmental approvals that will allow two upgrades to existing cell towers; a replacement home and a new home. In December Morrow County Planning Department staff issued three development approvals allowing the placement of three homes and three approvals for additions to

The Morrow County Planning Commission is seeking a volunteer to represent the greater Ione area. Morrow County Planning Commissioners generally serve four-year terms, however this recruitment is to fill a partial term which would end on December 31, 2019.

Planning Commission duties include approving land use actions, maintaining the county’s subdivision and zoning ordinance, and working with the County Board of Commissioners to manage the county’s land use Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Commission generally meets once a month, alternating between Heppner and Boardman locations.

Young children in Morrow County can benefit from a reading program started by Dolly Parton more than 20 years ago

More than 20 years ago, famous country-western singer Dolly Parton started a reading program for young children. Morrow County children ages birth to five can participate in this program, thanks to the efforts of Oregon Trail Library Director Kathy Street. The children are mailed their own personal book each month. Only 25% of the children who are eligible in Morrow County are now signed up for this wonderful opportunity. If you know of a child age birth to five, check with any of Oregon Trail Library District branches for information on signing up the child.

Oregon Trail Library District has collaborated with Friends of the Irrigon Library and Morrow County School District to offer Parton’s Imagination Library program to kids in Morrow County. Children ages birth to five who live in Boardman, Heppner, Irrigon and Lexington are eligible to register.

The Imagination Library distributes 1 million books every month.

Free books are mailed to children from birth to age five. Communities in the United States, United Kingdom, Australia, and Canada participate. Over 100 million books have been distributed through the program.

Morrow County Dolly Parton Imagination Library began requesting donations in June of 2018. Kathy

Street, OTLD Library Director, said the “community response has been wonderful. “Donations have come in all sizes. Individuals, small businesses and large businesses have all contributed to the program,” said Street.

Two sizeable donations, one from Lamb Weston and one from Wild Horse Foundation helped meet the donation level needed to fund the program fully this year. The cost per child is $25 per year. This is to cover postage for mailing books directly to children.

The James and Shirley Rippey Family Foundation offered to help fund rural Oregon communities starting their own Imagination Library.

For the first three years, the Rippey Family Foundation will fund 50% of the cost. This generous funding is what made having a Morrow County Imagination Library possible.

Kathy Street, Barb Huwe of Friends of Irrigon Library and Marie Shimer of Morrow County School District completed the necessary paperwork. Child registration started at the libraries in July and was soon converted to open online registration.

At this time 127 children are enrolled. Three children have graduated from the program on their fifth birthday. Census data predicts that there will be approximately 400 eligible children in the zip-codes included in the program. Enrollment is a little over 25% of the estimate.

Children may be registered by their parents or household adult.

There is no fee to sign up as a volunteer and once you have been trained and approved, curriculum is available at no charge.

Morrow County 4-H Leaders Council Want to learn more about how 4-H program works and provide feedback for future program ideas? The Morrow County 4-H Leaders Council is open to all 4-H volunteer leaders. Meetings are held four to five times a year. he Boardman City Council approved a request for a business directory sign downtown at its meeting on Tuesday.

Councilors gave the goahead for the Boardman Chamber of Commerce to put up business directory signage at the intersection of Main Street and N.W. Front Street.

The chamber received a grant for the project, but needed council approval to proceed.

In other council business, an ordinance regarding the Umatilla Electric franchise was tabled until the next council meeting. Also tabled was a resolution regarding a fourway stop at the intersection of Faler Road and Mt. Hood Avenue. Councilors will be revisiting this issue during their next meeting.

Your continuing concerns have touched us, especially the calls and letters regarding our wellbeing during the horrible wildfires in California this past fall. We did have days of unhealthy smoke and ash filled air from the fires, but our families and communities were unharmed.

We know Morrow County and the entire Columbia Basin also experienced tragic wildfire disasters. In spite of those disasters, we were heartened to learn Oregon sent fire crews and responders to aid California communities.

Thank you for your enduring friendships. We think of you every day, and look forward to seeing you again next March, during the Frostbite Golf Tournament.
