Columbia River Pharmacy opened December 5th

On December 5th, Columbia River Community Health Services opened their pharmacy, replacing the Good Shepherd Pharmacy at Harvest Town Foods in Boardman.

Andrew Cemore relocated from Omaha, Nebraska to be the lead pharmacist at the location. He has fifteen years’ experience at OmniCare Pharmacy in Omaha. He graduated at University of Nebraska in the College of Pharmacy in 2002. His family will join him here in a couple of weeks when their housing is ready: wife Jennifer and children AJ age 16, Melinda age 14, Cooper age 9 and Cole, age 7.

“My wife is from a small town, and we were living in Omaha,” says Andrew. “We were looking to move to a smaller town when this came available. My sister lives in the Portland area so I had been to Oregon several times and liked it.” That clinched the deal!

“The community is amazing and

very understanding about opening the pharmacy. We see a great need in the community,” he added.

Cemore said another pharmacist will be added to the staff in the future.

Louis Montes is the Pharmacy Technician and has worked for three years in his job. A native of Stanfield, he lives in Hermiston and commutes to work.

Ana Carmona is the Pharmacy Clerk and is studying to become a Pharmacy Technician. She is a graduate of Irrigon High School.

“This is very busy work,” says Ana. “And there’s a lot to learn, but it is a fun, pleasant environment.”

Topics for Boardman Chamber of Commerce Business Training & Development Seminar: Healthcare Update: Trump’s decision to terminate cost-sharing payments under Obamacare will destabilize health insurance markets.

But to fix our system, we have to address the root cause of America’s health care problems: Unhealthy lifestyles that account for 50-70 percent of health care costs.

Until we address the lifestyle issues creating the need for expensive treatments, costs will continue their rise inexorably.

Marijuana in the Workplace: We live in marijuana-friendly times. Following marijuana’s win at the 2016 ballot box, a total of 28 states plus the District of Columbia have adopted laws that legalize marijuana on the state level (it is a mix of medical marijuana and personal use laws). Oregon has legalized both medical and personal use marijuana.

Despite these laws, employers are not (yet) directly impacted by these laws. Specifically, employers may continue to adopt drug policies that prohibit marijuana and are not required to modify those policies as a form of reasonable accommodation of disability.

This session will review a solid drug testing policy.

Oregon Overtime Rules for Manufacturers: A new Oregon law clarifies Oregon’s daily and weekly overtime laws and sets new maximum-hour limits for certain Oregon employers. The new statute, which Oregon Governor Kate Brown signed on August 8, 2017, requires most employers in the manufacturing sector to pay employees the greater of daily or weekly overtime if an employee works more than 10 hours in a single day and more than 40 hours total in the course of a single workweek. The law also sets a firm 55-hour weekly limit for most manufacturing-sector employees.

Boardman City Council honors RHS boys soccer champs

The Boardman City Council presented the Riverside High School Soccer Team with certificates of achievement during the December 5, 2017 city council meeting for the team’s success in bring home the Oregon Class 3A/2A/1A State Soc-

cer Championship. The team played last month against Catlin Gabel in Hillsboro with a 4-1 victory.

Mayor Sandy Toms, who was in attendance via phone, apologized for not being there in person for the presentation, said how

Hermiston Chamber moves to new location Effective December 20th, the Greater Hermiston Chamber of Commerce and the Hermiston Visitor and Welcome Center will be moving to a new office location in Hermiston located at the Cornerstone Plaza, the address is 1055 S Hwy 395, Suite 111, Hermiston, Oregon. Holiday food baskets serve over 42 families

A Big Thank you to our Boardman Community, this year we were able to supply 42 families with food baskets and covered over 145 children with gifts for the holiday season. None of this would have been possible without the tremendous support and generosity from our community and local businesses. A special thank you to Boardman Fire Department for the help gathering applications and loading food baskets, Boardman Foods for supplying the fresh fruit and onions, Bud-Rich Potato for the bags of potatoes, Our Lady Of Guadalupe Catholic Church youth group (pictured above) with the help in building the baskets, Lamb-Weston for supplying the boxes, and MJ Labors for supplying the milk, Boardman Police Department for helping distribute baskets, Boardman Harvest Foods, Irrigon Food Pantry, and lastly Balfour Beatty Construction for helping supply families with whole chickens. I would also like to thank the Boardman Recreation Center, Banner Bank, and Bank of Eastern Oregon Staff for helping with setting up the project. None of this would be possible without the kindness of our communities and volunteers. Thank you all again for making this project possible.

What’s new at CRCHS? As of January 2nd, 2018 CRCHS will have extended hours of operation to being open Monday – Friday 8:00 am-8:00 pm and Saturday 8:00am – 5:00 pm. CRCHS exists to improve the quality of life for all people, especially the underserved and vulnerable people in the community, by providing access to high quality, primary and preventative health care.

CRCHS offers services regardless of anyone’s ability to pay. We accept all insurance payers in our health center and our pharmacy.

ing around those issues as they come up, we appreciate your patience. We are extremely thankful for the support our patients and community. Boardman awards bid for water/sewer improvements During their December 5th meeting, the Boardman City Council awarded a bid faor water and sewer improvements to Premier Excavation, Inc. of Pasco, Washington.

The project has been in the planning stages since 2014 and will include new water and sewer lines in several areas of Boardman including S. Main Street, Wilson Lane and Faler Road. Sixteen bids were received for the project, with Premier Construction coming in the with the apparent lowest bid of $2,276,119.10. The city’s engineers, Anderson Perry and Associates, has worked with this contractor in the past and is pleased to be working with them on this project. The

water and sewer upgrades are expected to begin in January of 2018 and be completed in October of 2018.

In other city business, the council approved a resolution establishing a Health Reimbursement Program for city employees. They also approved a resolution approving an agreement between the sponsors of the Columbia River Enterprise Zone and VaData, Inc. The city council also rescheduled their January 2, 2018 regular meeting to January 9, 2018.

The next Boardman City Council meeting will be Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at 7:00pm at Boardman City Hall.

Boardman Field House under construction – to be open soon

Boardman’s new Field House is located directly behind City Hall, 200 City Center Circle.

Wondering what the new building is that is being erected behind City Hall? It’s a new Field House.

If weather permits, a steel-sided 60by-108-foot field house will soon be open for use. The pole building will be available for local youth baseball and softball players. Construction began in December and it will hopefully be equipped and open in the next 4-6 weeks.

The Boardman Community Development Corporation chose this project as a priority a few years ago and has finally raised enough money to get the construction going. “It really is an investment in the future of our youth”, said Lisa Mittelsdorf, BCDA’s president.

“My past experience in coaching youth little league and softball here was that there was never enough indoor space to work on yearround practice. I have driven to Hermiston, Pendleton and Portland in order to get indoor practice time for my daughter”. Scheduling at the high school’s multi-purpose building is very difficult due to the high school’s wrestling and cheer programs. “Those teams have built

very strong programs with dedicated practice space.” Mittelsdorf is hopeful that have this space will allow better development of the baseball and softball programs in the community from youth through adulthood.

The Boardman Community Development Association is hoping to build on the success and progress of the Boardman Pool and Recreation Center with more activities for our young people.

The Boardman Police Department will also be a regular user of this space. It will allow them to use the facility for their officer training needs and provide a great space to run community classes such as defense training. Chief Stokoe added “this facility will be a great addition to the Boardman community. The police department looks forward to having this space right outside our offices.

As a volunteer at the high school, I am also excited to have it available for helping to build our youth sports programs.”

The facility is referred to as the Boardman Field House. It is not a

business looking to charge for use.

Instead, she hopes local youth teams and individuals will all take advantage of the facility for pitching and hitting practice, and with the size of the building there will be plenty of room for ground ball and throwing drills.

BCDA has had many volunteers step forward to help make this project a reality. They hope to honor them publicly at a dedication and in the press at a future date.

Mittelsdorf is still seeking volunteers and additional funds to allow for purchase of turf, pitching machines, netting, and other instruction and training gadgets to outfit two batting cages, pitching lanes and hitting station areas throughout the field house. “It’s going the be a great facility,” she said, adding that she is looking for an electrician to provide advice and help with the lighting.

Windy River Elementary receives donation from former Boardman student BOARDMAN – A recent donation to Windy River Elementary will help feed a student given in honor of a former Boardman student Starr Caswell recently contacted the school’s principal, Brandon Hammond, because she wanted to donate some money in the name of her friend, Pamela Kuhn. Kuhn attended Boardman schools while growing up there and is now a wellknown opera singer, radio talk show host and music director/conductor who lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Caswell donated about $300 in Kuhn’s name to honor her. The funds will be used to pay for lunch for a student for the entire school year. In her letter to the school, Caswell said, “To give this gift in Pam’s name is an honor and privilege. Through all her accomplishments, Pam has never forgotten her roots and often speaks of her beloved home town, Boardman!”

Principal Hammond said the gift truly represents the meaning of the holidays and he is grateful for what the donation means to a family.

“Boardman is a special place to raise a family, and to see the lasting effect that the area has had on Pamela (Kuhn) is a testament to this town,” Hammond said.

Pregnancy Care Services transitions to local governance HERMISTON – After six years of operation, a pregnancy support center in Hermiston will transition into an independent, locally governed center on Jan. 1, 2018.

Previously known as Pregnancy Care Services, the center also will receive a new name – TruCare Pregnancy Resource Center.

The Hermiston Center also is inviting the public to its first annual Fundraising Banquet, “Building a Culture of Life,” from 5-7 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, 2018 at the Hermiston Community Center. Guest speaker will be Kirk Walden, author of The Wall and a long-time pro-life participant. Walden will help cast a vision of building a culture of life in Hermiston and the surrounding cities of Umatilla, Irrigon, Stanfield, Boardman, Echo, Heppner, Lexington and Ione.

Earlier in 2017, after experiencing the overwhelming support of both the Hermiston and Pendleton communities at the PCS fund-raising banquet, Hermiston residents approached the Board of Directors with a request. Would the Board offer its support and assistance in facilitating the Hermiston Center to begin operating independently,

with its own Board of Directors?

After consideration, prayer and discernment, the Board responded with a positive “Yes.” To this end, an eight-member Hermiston Center Formation Board has managed actions necessary to transition the Hermiston PCS to an independent, locally governed Center. The current PCS Board of Directors will continue overseeing the Pendleton Center.

The need for and value of the life-affirming services of the Pregnancy Care Centers in Hermiston and Pendleton for people in local communities continues to grow.

Local governance will ultimately help both Centers to expand their efforts to minister to and assist women and families with unexpected pregnancies. This transition will allow local boards at each site to fine tune the focus of their mission, expending their energy and resources in ways that best address the unique needs in their respective communities.

All pregnancy care services are provided free and offered in a confidential, nonjudgmental environment to anyone requesting them.

Services include, but are not limited to, pregnancy tests and options counseling (with complete and accurate information about parenting, adoption and abortion).

Parenting support for men and

women and material assistance for their children is also provided through special programs. Information on sexual integrity, birth control, and sexually transmitted diseases is also available. Community referrals are given to local agencies, physicians, and other community support systems. Post-abortion counseling is also available.

As of Jan. 1, PCS in northeastern Oregon will be provided by two independent centers, one in Hermiston and one in Pendleton. Each site operates with a paid director, and more than 50 volunteers donate staff time and services between the two sites. The intention of the Pendleton PCS board of directors and the Hermiston TruCare Board are to render mutual support whenever possible and to collaborate and partner in ministrystrengthening areas.

orrow County Planning Commission Appointment Available Currently Looking for a Volunteer Morrow County— December 14, 2017— Morrow County is looking for a volunteer to represent Boardman on the Morrow County Planning Commission.

Planning Commissioners serve fouryear terms. These appointments are to fill terms ending December 31, 2021.

Typical Meeting Schedule The Planning Commission generally meets once a month, alternating meeting locations between Heppner and Boardman. Duties of the Planning Commission include approving land use actions, maintaining the county’s subdivision and zoning ordinances, and working with the Morrow County Board of Commissioners to manage the county’s land use Comprehensive Plan. Application Process Interested parties residing in the North Morrow County area who are interested in taking a more active part in land use planning in the county are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to the Morrow County Planning Department, P.O. Morrow County Public Works is seeking members to fill two position on the Morrow County Solid Waste advisory committee. These members meet four time a year.

The duties of the Solid Waste Advisory Committee shall be to: Provide a forum for citizen comments, questions and concerns about solid waste topics as deemed appropriate and necessary by the County Court; Provide leadership for the development, funding and implementation of the County’s solid waste programs, including meeting state mandated recycling goals; Create an Annual Report for the County Court documenting implementation of the Solid Waste Management Plan and any necessary regulations or amendments to the Solid Waste Ordinance. Public Hearing - Annexation Request The City of Boardman will hold a public hearing before the Boardman City Council at 7:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 9, 2017, at Boardman City Hall. The purpose of the hearing is to hear comment on an annexation request of the following properties: Morrow County Tax Map 4N 25E 10: Tax lot #100 Morrow County Tax Map 4N 25E 11: Tax lots #200, #201, #203, #204, #205, #300, #302, #303, and #401.

The area involved is approximately 177.90 acres, including 5.05 acres of rights-of-way, and is zoned General Industrial, 94.96 acres, and Port Industrial, 82.94 acres.

The request is from the Port of Morrow which is the property owner of all the lots included in the annexation request. A Map of the area of annexation is available and Boardman City Hall.

Morrow County FFA chapters collect food items at SAGE Center BOARDMAN, Ore. – During the month of December the Morrow County Future Farmers of America (FFA) Chapters collected non-perishable food items at the SAGE Center.

Those food items were considered “votes” that could be placed under a School Spirit tree. Four School Spirit trees were decorated, one for each chapter in Morrow County.

The winning chapter would receive a private movie showing in the SAGE Center theater.

The trees were on display inside the SAGE Center, adorned with FFA’s signature colors of blue and gold. The first place tree, Ione, was decorated with wooden farm animal ornaments and prestigious county and state fair ribbons. Second place was Heppner, with handmade salt-dough ornaments, school supplies, and a white paper-chain garland. Third place was Irrigon with numerous ball ornaments, gold garland, and candy canes. Fourth place was Riverside

with blue and silver garland, bells, and a festive three-foot nutcracker to stand beside the tree.

The non-perishable food items that were donated were given to food banks throughout Morrow

County. The SAGE Center would like to thank the FFA Chapters for their participation in the competition, as well as, the surrounding communities for their support in donating/voting.
