February is American Heart Month February is American Heart Month and we want to inform Veterans on the conditions that affect the heart and how you can help avoid potential heart problems.

Cardiovascular disease or heart disease is the leading cause of death in the U.S. Heart disease includes a range of conditions, many of which are related to atherosclerosis, a condition that develops when plaque or fatty material builds up in the walls of the arteries. The plaque makes the arteries smaller, making it harder for blood to flow through them. If a blood clot forms, it can block blood flow. This can cause a heart attack or stroke.

A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked by a blood clot. If this clot cuts off the blood flow completely, the part of the heart muscle supplied by that artery begins to die. Depending on the damage your doctor may prescribe medicine and recommend lifestyle changes.

A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that feeds the brain gets blocked, usually from a blood clot or when a blood vessel within the brain bursts. When the blood supply to a part of the brain is shut off,

Some strokes can be severe resulting in death.

Other Types of Heart Disease • Heart failure: Heart failure means the heart isn’t pumping blood as well as it should. The heart keeps working, but the body’s need for blood and oxygen is not being met.

Heart failure can get worse if not treated. If you or a loved one has heart failure, it’s very important to seek medical attention immediately and follow the doctor’s orders.

• Arrhythmia: This is an abnormal rhythm of the heart. The heart can beat too slowly, too fast or irregularly. An arrhythmia can affect how well the heart works. The heart may not be able to pump enough blood to meet the body’s needs.

• Heart valve problems: When heart valves don’t open enough or don’t

close properly.

The most common symptom of heart disease is chest pain. It’s described as an uncomfortable feeling of heaviness or pressure in the chest. Some might also experience a burning, squeezing or aching feeling in the chest.

Other possible signs of heart problems can include: • Rapid or irregular pulse • Shortness of breath • Pain, numbness, weakness or coldness in your legs or arms if the blood vessels in those parts of your body are narrowed • Pain in the neck, jaw, throat, upper abdomen or back • Dizziness • Fatigue • Anxiety Some people mistake heart pain with indigestion or heartburn. That’s why it’s important to seek medical attention if you think you may be suffering from a serious heart condition.

Exercising, eating a healthy diet, not smoking, lowering cholesterol, controlling high blood pressure and maintaining a healthy weight can reduce your risks of heart disease.

Talk to your health care provider to discuss what you can do to avoid heart related problems and live a healthy life.

North Morrow Community Foundation Sponsors Art in the Schools

Over 250 students were treated to two weeks of art in the classroom sponsored by North Morrow Community Foundation during the month of December. Guest artist, Kathy Spears, taught perspective, abstract art and painting with acrylics in grades fourth, fifth and sixth at Irrigon Elementary School. Kathy worked with each student everyday to help them paint a final snowy scene with acrylic paints on canvas. She provided encouragement and knowledge to help these students increase their eye hand coordination and understanding of perspective. This program promotes artistic ability and a sense of success for all students of all abilities. Kathy will be at AC Houghton in 2020.

Life along the Columbia River – 98 years ago from local newspapers Life along the Columbia River is news from 90+ years ago taken from local newspapers and was retyped 10 years ago by Carol Michael, and then published in the North Morrow Times.

Carol and her husband Ray moved from Boardman to California a few years ago. Recently Carol inquired to see if the North Morrow Times would be interested in re-running Life along the Columbia River

since Boardman is growing and has so many new residence Carol Michael was involved in community activities in Morrow County for more than 15 years. The activities include the North Morrow Community Foundation, the Morrow County Historical Society, the Boardman Chamber of Commerce, the OSU Extension Service, and the Morrow County Cultural Coalition.

In 2007, she was a co-recipient of

an Oregon Heritage Excellence Award for the making of “Higher Ground,” a DVD about the moving Carol Michael of Boardman to avoid being flooded by water behind John Day Dam.

2009 was Oregon’s 150th Birthday!

Housing, School, Community, Agricultural Production and Economic Development – Sound Familiar?

January 6, 1922 A four-room house can be built for $225.00 with materials from the new Cement Block and Pressed Brick Factory opening soon in Umatilla.

P.H. Pollen, Wm. Kennedy and Henry Notz of Hermiston own the brick factory.

Morrow County Oil. An oil company, headquartering at Ione, has taken five-year leases on large bodies of land in the Wells Springs area, and is to begin boring for oil within a year. There is quite a bit of excitement. Experts say the prospects are good.

Boys Basketball Team: Game scheduled with Arlington January 6 and another with Irrigon 7 January.

Wednesday evening the team plans to show a movie in the auditorium.

The boys Athletic Club gave a basket social followed by a dance Wednesday evening. The hometown orchestra furnished music. The boys are trying to raise money enough to finance them thru the basketball season.

13 January 1922 The Boardman Basketball Team has no floor to practice on as our outdoor court has been unusable since 1 December, but we beat Irrigon 17 to 11. A pretty good showing.

The Boardman Cheese Factory is increasing its output and faces the necessity of enlarging its facility.

The product is now ready for market and if it can be distributed rapidly

enough to keep up with its production, success is assured.

LOCALS: Sam Boardman is confined to bed with the grippe. Students who missed their treats because the weather closed the school down in December will receive them.

Boardman defeated on Arlington floor, score 18 to 14. Arlington boys outplayed Boardman during the first half and piled up a score of 10-2.

Boardman came back strong in the second half, making 10 points.

Boardman Cheese and Honey will be served for Portland Chamber of Commerce Luncheon 23 to 25 January. The Boardman Cheese Association is offering Swiss Brick Cheese and Frank Otto is sending a can of Supreme Candied Honey.

January 20, 1922 Tuesday morning a near blizzard developed, prevailing east wind shuts down the Boardman Pumping Plant. Since the middle of December school has closed. Both the town and the School’s pumping plants have broken down.

Parts cannot be secured. Pumping of water into the mains of the town system is to be discontinued in 30 days, according to the school board. The rentals, even if paid in full, would not compensate for the wear and tear on the school machinery.

Parents need to send hot bricks and jugs of hot water with their children who ride on the bus. It is too cold for tots. The bricks and jugs can be picked up in the evening.

Several children suffered frostbite on their hands and feet Wednesday. Cold weather demoralizes our school. Students can’t sit in un-

heated schools. Boardman is having trouble holding school. It is as bad as the year of the flu.

It dropped to sixteen degrees here Wednesday. Two years ago it was thirty-three degrees below.

January 27, 1922 Approximately 100,000 Jack Rabbit have been poisoned. Drives are being held every two or three days at Willow Creek. Drives in Sand Hollow netted 6,500 in two days.

Heppner brought in 7,500 in Juniper Canyon. Irrigon has tabulated from 15,000 to 20,000 in their campaign.

Boardman Farmer’s Week to begin February the 6th. Monday and Tuesday will be devoted to clothing and nutrition. Wednesday will be devoted to bee problems. Thursday will be devoted to irrigation practices, Friday to poultry and farm management and Saturday to Dairying and Hogs.

Mrs. Ira A. Berger is suffering with frozen heels. Arden Meunch of Portland, uncle of Mr. And Mrs. Royal Rands, was a guest at their home last week. He enjoyed the dance and the rabbit drives. He can’t believe the growth in our community since his last visit three years ago.

inter Term at Blue Mountain Com munity College starts January 6, 2020. Students may register through that first week of the term although it is always better to get registered before that. A key date to remember is Friday, January 10.

That is the last day to drop classes and also the last day to pay without incurring a late fee. Students and potential students are reminded to file the FAFSA or the ORSAA as soon as possible. The 20-21 FAFSA awards financial aid for the academic year beginning Summer Term of 2020.

The classes run from January 10th through February 28th and cost just $35 per child for a session. Ages 3 to 15; swimmers must be potty trained, no swim diapers allowed. The levels taught are Preschool Level - Learn to Swim Level 4. Private swim lessons are offered year around -- stop by the front desk at Boardman Pool & Recreation Center for more information.

ach year at the Boardman Cham ber of Commerce’s Distinguished Citizen Awards Banquet, a “Citizen of the Year”, “Educator of the Year”, “Business Person of the Year”, “First-Responder”, “Youth Citizen of the Year”, and “Boardman Pioneer” are honored.

Please fill out the nomination form with the category, nominees name and a description of how the nominee fits the criteria. A selection committee comprised of community leaders will review all nominations and select the Distinguished Citizen Award recipient. The names of all nominees and recipients are kept in strictest confidence. It is your obligation to make sure you have tickets and attend the banquet to present if your nominee is chosen as the winner. The Chamber will provide the winner with two tickets to the banquet on February 14, 2020 at the Riverfront Center. We do have an emcee that can make introductions if needed. BOARDMAN PARK AND RECREATION is looking to contract with certified instructors to teach classes and LIFEGUARDS (Fulltime or Parttime) at the Pool and Recreation Center. The Boardman Pool and Recreation Center is a new indoor 43,000 square foot center complete with an Aerobics room, double Gymnasium, Weight and Cardio room, a large Climbing Wall and an Aquatics section.

The Aquatics area has features such as a large Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, Water Slide and a Vortex Pool that provides fun and resistant exercise for all.

Please place your tree along the curb in front of your home for pick up.
