Boardman Chamber announces volunteers of the year CITIZEN OF THE YEAR 2013 RAY MICHAEL Ray Michael has been a long time resident of Boardman, owning the Boardman Hardware and Pharmacy before retiring two years ago. Ray is a member of the Boardman Kiwanis and volunteers in the many Kiwanis events: Halloween Party, Breakfast with Santa, Harvest Fundraiser and he and his wife, Carol generously support the Kiwanis Scholarship for the local seniors. Ray has served on the Park Board for over 25 years and is still an active board member! He has been very active with the Boardman Chamber of Commerce and has helped with many of the events and projects that make Boardman the community it is today. Ray may have retired but that certainly didn’t slow down his commitment to volunteering for his community. EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR BETSY SHANE Betsy Shane is the Junior High Math teacher at Riverside Jr/Sr. High School. For the past two years Betsy has been the force behind the after school math programs. She has designed curriculum; implemented math apps and tutorials; contacted parents; and tracked student progress. She has been tenacious in getting students involved in their education.

Ray Michael All Photos contributed She can be counted on to take an extra student or add an extra class if it will help students be successful. This school year, Betsy has taken on coordinating state testing for the school. This includes training staff on testing procedures, scheduling testing for the entire school, and tracking student progress on testing. She has taken upon herself to work with the seniors that have not passed their OAKS tests and give them additional support they need to pass the tests. Betsy has been one of the main forces behind our Gear Up grant. Last school year she took the initiative to introduce Ipads in her math classes and has students using a variety of different math apps and tutorials in class on a daily basis. Betsy has high expectations and is one of those teachers that students are always asking to be put back into her class – not because it is easy but because they know she cares about them as an individual and will do everything she can to help them be successful. FIRE & SAFETY AWARD 2013 SUZANNE GRAY Suzanne Gray is the first smiling face you see when you stop Boardman’s Volunteer Fire Department. She answers the phone with cheer and professionalism. Likewise if you telephone the station,

she is likely to be the first voice you hear. As everyone knows, it takes a lot of people to run a volunteer organization and especially important is someone to take care of the many small details. Suzanne spearheaded Boardman’s Fire Corps organization back in 2007 and makes sure all members know that their role in Fire Corps is important, no matter how big or small. She organized the door to door smoke detector campaign. When you or your child would come home with information on public safety, that was Suzanne with her

They moved their business, J & D Electric and started a whirlwind of dedication to not only their employees but to everyone they touched. Karen has been active in almost

tax preparation. She volunteers her time as treasurer for the Boardman Community Development Association and has been a tireless volunteer, supporter and promoter of the North Morrow Community Foundation. Karen is currently serving as President of the Boardman Park District and has been on their board for many years. This last year she joined Kiwanis and has helped on numerous projects.
