BOARDMAN, Ore. (December 3, 2018) – For the second year, the SAGE Center held a Winter Market event showcasing local crafters, makers, and artists. More than thirty vendors from Morrow County and the surrounding area sold their goods during the two-day event.

The SAGE Center was adorned with Christmas lights, both inside and out, ready to welcome attendees to the event. Over 500 people came out to enjoy the festivities, almost doubling the first year’s attendance.

Friday evening’s “Ladies Night” was lively with gals and vendors mingling, a musician playing an electric cello, and a steady line for free hors d’oeuvres provided by River Lodge and Grill. Door prizes donated by the vendors were raffled as gifts to the guests as they left the SAGE Center; nearly everyone went home with something.

Tessa Herra, a vendor from Arlington, who has been crafting under the Tzigns name for around 12 years, said she “was very impressed and happy with the turn out for the Boardman Winter Market at the SAGE Center.” Having almost tripled what she expected to make in sales, Herra said she also made new friends.

“After working in Morrow County for five years, it felt like I was vending for close family.”

Saturday’s “Family Day” saw flurries of crowds throughout the day.

In addition to shopping for the perfect holiday gift, families gathered in the photo booth, explored the exhibit hall at the SAGE Center, and made fun crafts together at the kids table.

The Port View Apartments sponsored the event and provided shopping bags to all attendees. Property Manager for the apartments, Tonya

Buys, was in attendance and said “this event surpassed all of my expectations and the variety of vendors was such that most any person attending would be able to find something that they could just not live without.”

While there were many new vendors this year, some returning vendors from the first year’s event included Shannon’s AmazBalls and Rockwell’s Woodworking.

Shannon Gallagher, owner of Shannon’s AmazBalls said, “I started making bath bombs about a year and a half ago because I couldn’t find ones that floated and made my skin soft for under ten dollars. I have been doing it as a side hobby and make other things like lotion, bath salts and whipped soaps. This is my second time doing the Winter Market event and it’s such a great event. There are so many amazing vendors and I love that the SAGE Center made it even more fun this year with food and a photo booth.”

Rockwell’s Woodworking is a Boardman-based business that started out as a weekend hobby for husband and wife team, Richard and Natasha Rockwell. “We have participated in several craft shows and bazaars including two of the local events at the SAGE Center, Harvest Festival and Winter Market. Both events are a great opportunity to network with the community and surrounding areas as well as earn money,” they said.

This year’s Winter Market demonstrated what community is all about. Businesses came together to provide quality goods literally for

their neighbors in a fun and festive holiday shopping environment. Not only did Morrow County locals enjoy the shopping and launch of the SAGE Center’s annual outdoor musical Christmas light show, but shoppers also came from around the region.

“We are very happy with the continued progress of both the Harvest Festival and Winter Market,” said SAGE Center Manager, Lisa Patrick.

“Our goal is to provide opportunities

for guests to visit our facility and learn more about our region’s sustainable agriculture and energy production. We will strive to add value to the events each and every year.”

Boardman Budget Committee seeks to fill two vacancies The City of Boardman has two vacancies on the budget committee.

The city is seeking interested parties who live within the Boardman City Limits to fill the two seats with terms ending December 31, 2021.

The positions will be appointed at a

future city council meeting.

The Budget Committee is comprised of the Boardman City Council and seven members of the community appointed by the City Council.

The Committee holds one or more meetings each May to review and make recommendations to the City

Council for the City’s budget and the Urban Renewal Districts’ Budget.

Boardman approves liquor license for Ordnance Cider, LLC The Boardman City Council approved a new liquor license for Ordnance Cider, LLC. Owner Craig Coleman currently holds a liquor license in Boardman for Ordnance Brewing and plans to expand to brewing cider. Councilors voted 6-0 to approve the license.

In other city business, councilors scheduled a workshop session with Sue Diciple, a broadband consultant working for the City of Boardman to conduct a study. They will meet in a workshop session on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 at 6pm. They plan to discuss Boardman’s future needs for broadband. The council also changed their December 4, 2018 meeting time from 7pm to 7:30pm to accommodate the councilors who will be attending the Community Tree Lighting at the SAGE Center that evening.

The next Boardman City Council meeting will be a workshop on Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at 6:00pm at Boardman City Hall.

Boardman Planning Commission seeks to fill 3 vacancies The City of Boardman has three vacancies on the Planning Commission. The city is seeking interested parties who live within the Boardman City Limits to fill the three seats, one term ending December 31, 2109 and two terms ending December 31, 2021. The positions will be appointed at a future city council meeting.

The Planning Commission is comprised of seven members appointed by the city council and is a permanent advisory body to the council on matters related to planning and development. The commission holds monthly public meetings to consider land use and zoning matters presented by staff, such as plan amendments, zone changes, conditional use permits, variances, and tentative subdivision projects.

Meetings are the third Wednesday of each month at 7pm at Boardman City Hall and are open to the public. More information about the planning commission can be found at: http://www.cityofboardman.com/pc/page/planning-commission .

Community members enjoyed the Thanksgiving feast that was cooked and served at the Boardman Senior Center. Over 300 meals were served free of charge.

We were sponsored by First Baptist Church, Good Shepherd Lutheran, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Getsemani Centro de Adoracion Church, Church of Latter Day Saints, and The Community Church. We served over 300 meals, including take-out meals. Volunteers were amazing in helping us serve and cleanup after the dinner.

There were 31 volunteers including an enthusiastic group from our Jun-

dinners and cleaning up. It was amazing to see how much they loved reaching out to serve the dear residents here in Boardman and surrounding areas.

Sam Boardman Elementary School and the Senior Center graciously allowed us to use their facilities. We appreciated the advertisements from the front page article and second page ad in the North Morrow Times and articles in the East Oregonian and the Hermiston Herald and a spot on the Reader Board.

We are thankful for our generous

community. Bank of Eastern Oregon to acquire branches from Umpqua Bank Heppner, Oregon, (November 2, 2018) BEO Bancorp (OTCBB:BEOB) and its subsidiary, Bank of Eastern Oregon, announced today that they have entered into a definitive agreement to acquire four branch locations from Umpqua Bank (NASDAQ: UMPQ). The branch locations are Colfax, Dayton, Lacrosse, and Pomeroy.

Jeff Bailey, President and CEO for Bank of Eastern Oregon said, “Our expansion into Washington began nearly five years ago when we acquired Bank Reale in Pasco. We see the addition of these Umpqua branches as a natural progression of expanding our brand of banking to rural communities in eastern Washington.”

Boardman Senior Center receives new Christmas tree from the Kiwanis Club of Boardman

Kiwanis Annual Halloween party was fun for the whole family

On October 31 the Kiwanis Club of Boardman hosted their annual Community Halloween Party. Children roamed the halls of Riverside Junior/Senior High School where the class room doors and halls were decorated by students, teachers, community and Kiwanis members and a pretend graveyard was set-up outside where gobblins and spooks haunted the trick or treaters as they walked by. However, kids weren’t the only ones to celebrate in the event as many of the grownups put on their costumes for the evening and joined in the festivity as well.

Each trick or treater received a treat at each of the 22 doors, and the Kiwanis served hot dogs , chips and a cold drink for $1 to 301 hungry participants .

When all was said and done, the Kiwanis had left over candy which was donated to the Boardman Chamber of Commerce to use at the Christmas Tree Lighting held December 4th. They also donated the left over condiments, pop, and hot dog buns to the Boardman Senior Center who gave the Kiwanis an invite to lunch for two members free of charge.

Beard to retire as of May 1, 2019 Casey Beard, the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon’s first General Manager, has informed the Round-Up and Happy Canyon Directors of his intention to retire on May 1st, 2019. Beard announced his retirement at this time to provide ample time to conduct a search for his replacement and give his successor the opportunity to get their boots on the ground in advance of next year’s Round-Up and Happy Canyon.

“It has been an honor to serve as he first General Manager in the long, illustrious histories of these world famous events”, said Beard. “I am proud to have been a part of the recent success that the Round-Up and Happy Canyon have enjoyed; especially winning the PRCA’s large Outdoor Rodeo of the Year the past three years. Community Focus

he City of Boardman began a water and sewer upgrade project in March of this year. For much of that time roadways have been impacted all around the city. The City would like to thank those impacted for their patience during the improvements.

In the Faler Road, Mt. Hood, Mt. Adams area, some roadways have been closed over the last couple weeks, making it difficult for traffic to get around. The City is happy to report that paving is almost complete in those areas.

These water and sewer upgrades have been in the planning stages since 2014. The upgrades will ensure reliability and flexibility in the City’s water system improving fire flow. The sewer project corrected several reoccurring problem areas. City contractors plan to have the project completed in December. oardman Seeks Nominations for Annual Citizen Awards Banquet. The Boardman Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents to nominate deserving members of the community for distinguished citizen awards to be presented at the 29th annual awards banquet in February.

n October 30, 2018, the Morrow County Planning Commission met in Heppner, Oregon at the Bartholomew Building and held three planned public hearings. The results were an approval for a Conditional Use Permit for a home occupation in the greater Irrigon area, a Land Partition on farm land five miles west of Ione, and a recommendation to the Board of Commissioners to adopt the Heppner Transportation System Plan.

During the month of October Morrow County Planning Department staff issued eight development approvals allowing the placement of four homes, a solar data collection device, storage containers, and the temporary use of an RV. Working cooperatively with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office, the Morrow County Planning Department is making continued progress on Code Enforcement issues.

Compliance is being met on several issues and further action is being taken on noncompliant issues.
