RHS Boys soccer team captures second State Championship

Skylar Wightman was named Player of the Year.

The Riverside boys soccer team dominated the entire state this year winning the Class 3A/2A/ 1A state playoffs, its second Championship.

The Pirates crushed their competition scoring 116 goals and allowing only 16. Their district record was 6-0.

Senior Quincy Castillo was named district Player of the Year and head coach Francisco Velazquez as Coach of the Year.

Riverside Girls Soccer captures back-to-back District Titles.

The Riverside Pirate girls soccer team made its way through the Special District 2 play this season with the district title and a 5-0-1 record. They were honored with numerous all-district selections.

The talented group of upperclassmen earned five first team selections.

Skylar Wightman was named Player of the Year. A four-year varsity player at forward earned honors after piling up 11 goals and 14 assists for the Pirates this season.

City announces Snow & Ice Control Program We all know how unpredictable the weather can be in our area. We have experienced winters (normally December, January and February) with no snow accumulation, to winters such as we’ve had in the past that deposited heavy snow accumulation.

With a population of over 3000 and 80 plus lane-miles of streets, the City is continually striving to provide an acceptable level of snow and ice control.

NORMAL SNOW CONDITIONS Our fleet of snow fighting equipment is readied before the ice and snow seasons each year. One, five-yard dump truck with sanding box and plow, 2.5 ton dump truck with sanding box and plow, combined with a crew of trained equipment operators, will keep major streets passable.

The City has established procedures and policies for addressing snow plowing and sanding of the streets. The procedures and policies are set on a priority basis, which set predetermined routes as follows: First Priority: All main streets and main intersections considered to be the highest priorities to keep open the main streets and roadway systems connecting the fire station, police station, emergency medical services, and schools.

Second Priority: Other streets

and selected areas such as steep hills and other problem areas identified by the public works department and/or police department.

Third Priority: Residential Streets CITIZEN RESPONSIBILITIES Snow can be beautiful, but it also can create hazards. When residents fail to clear their sidewalks, the result can be a treacherous ice patch. We need your help in protecting pedestrians from possible injury.

Residents are responsible to maintain their sidewalks and driveways adjacent to their property.

Please pile snow on your yard, not in the street. If your sidewalk is icy, you may correct the hazard by applying a heavy coat of sand.

Handicapped, elderly or other individuals unable to clean snow from their sidewalks may choose to contact someone to do this job for them. The following may provide this service to you: RHS Wrestling Team – Coach Boor 481- 2525 COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT SNOW REMOVAL Q: Can’t the City remove the snow they put in my driveway and sidewalks?

A: Our primary duty is to open and keep open the main roadway system. Considering the large number of driveways and amount of

sidewalks in the City, it is too costly and time consuming, and would require additional City staff and equipment to perform this service.

Q: Why not plow to the center?

A: Plowing snow and piling it to the center of a street causes a hazardous situation. Traffic flow is restricted by eliminating a portion of a lane and this practice can also create sight obstructions for low vehicles. The freeze-thaw cycle creates daily problems when the melting snow freezes on the road surface every evening.

Q: Can I park my car on the street?

A: Yes, on those streets where parking is normally allowed. However, having to maneuver a snowplow in and out between parked vehicles can not only be dangerous, but also nerve-wracking for our drivers and is not an efficient way to plow the snow. One must be aware that if a car is parked on the side of the street, we could plow your car in with a snow bank.

Q: Why are residential streets seldom plowed?

A: With over 80 lane miles of streets to maintain, with limited equipment and staff, it is usually not possible to plow all of the streets. We make every effort to get to the lower priority streets when conditions allow.

Boardman Pool & Recreation Center will be CLOSED: Sunday, December 24, Monday, December 25 Sunday, December 31 Monday, January 1 All 24-Hour Access will also be closed those dates.

Columbia River Community Health Services (CRCHS) extending operation hours Here at CRCHS we are always looking for ways to provide better patient care and ways to become more accessible to the community. Starting January 1st, 2018 CRCHS will be extending their hours of operation to being open Monday – Friday 8am-8pm and Saturday 8:00am – 5:00 pm.

Our Columbia River Pharmacy is days away from its opening date! On December 5th, Columbia River Pharmacy will be taking over the location where Good Shepherd Pharmacy is currently located, inside Harvest Town Foods. Our operating hours for our pharmacy will be Monday— Friday: 8:00 AM—7:00 PM and Saturday: 9:00 AM—6:00 PM. We will be set up with most contracted insurance payers by opening date.

The year 2018 looks bright for CRCHS! We have added Alysia McDonald to our Provider team and Dr. Steven Marshall. CRCHS will be adding optometry, Dr. Chown will come out once a month to help our pediatric patients needing testing for Amblyopia. We are hoping that in the year of 2018 we will keep on adding services to our health center to better serve our community.

Our Mom’s Group had their first Committee Meeting November 13th, 2017. We are still looking for moms to volunteer their time in being part of the support group committee to help our clinic in developing a place where moms can get the support they need. This will involve planning activities, baby showers, etc.

Boardman decorates for Christmas

For the fifth year in a row, Santa’s elves turned out to light up Boardman for Christmas. Even though the weather was on the chilly side, on Saturday the 18th volunteers spent the morning decorating the City of Boardman. Made up mostly of Riverside High School students, the volunteers placed wooden cut outs, thousands of Christmas lights, garland, and wreaths at City Center, the four areas adjacent to the interstate and the “Merry Christmas” and “Feliz Navidad” lighted signs at the Splash Pad Park along NE Front Street.

The City of Boardman sponsors the Christmas Decoration Committee each year. Their goal is to decorate Boardman for the Christmas season for everyone to enjoy. The committee depends heavily on volunteers to help decorate and undecorate, and is so grateful when there is such a big turnout.

Committee Chair Sandy Toms said she was happy to see so many young people help out. The Christmas Decoration Committee would like to thank everyone who helped decorate Boardman for Christmas including the Riverside High School Key Club, area church groups, Boardman Fire Department Crew, Henry Zitterkob, David Jones, Brittany Stewart, Shari Stokoe, Kevin and Sandy Toms, and City staff Kevin Kennedy, Barry Beyeler, and Rick Stokoe.

BEO Bancorp announces dividend for 2017 Heppner, Oregon, (October 30, 2017) “I am pleased to announce that the Board of Directors of BEO Bancorp has voted to declare a $0.80 per share dividend for 2017.

The dividend will be paid to shareholders of record as of December 1, 2017 payable on or before December 15, 2017,” said President and CEO Jeff Bailey.

According to Board Chairman George Koffler, “BEO Bancorp has paid a dividend 31 of the past 32 years. Dividends reflect the financial stability and profitability of the bank. We are very happy to be able to provide this dividend to our shareholders.”

3rd ANNUAL SANTA DRIVE

Boardman Sam Boardman Elementary’s annual Veterans Day Concert occurred on November 9 th . The school’s brand new music teacher, Heather Noble, did a wonderful job preparing students to perform patriotic songs in tribute to all veterans who have served and continue to serve for our country. The guest speaker was Andrew Kimmell, a former sergeant in the U.S. Army.

Second and third grade students presented the history of Veterans Day, the Pledge of Allegiance and “thank you” cards to veterans.

School staff would like to give a special thanks to the Boardman Police Explorers who provided the color guard.

“The Veterans Day activities are wonderful occasions for students and staff to express our gratitude for those who have made such enormous sacrifices, and we are glad for the opportunity each year,” said district staff.

Irrigon Irrigon Jr/Sr High School hosted its annual Veterans Day Assembly in the gym with all of 9 th -12 th grade students in attendance. The school invited all local veterans to attend and be honored during the assembly and for refreshments afterward.

Local Boy Scout Troop #602 color guard presented the colors and the Irrigon High Pep Band played the national anthem to kick off the event. Irrigon Jr/Sr High School teacher Mr. Johnson, currently serving in the National Guard, spoke about his service and why he chooses to continue serving. Irrigon students who have already enlisted or plan on enlisting in the military were asked to stand and be recognized. This was followed by student presentations in

honor of Veterans Day, including songs, poems and essays. Clara Sexton-Funk performed a song, Jocelyn Dyer presented her own essay, while Liz Perez, Liz Nunez and Alex Walls all presented pieces that were written by other students from Irrigon Jr/Sr High School.

At A.C. Houghton Elementary, the Lions Club visited and gave a presentation to all 1st grade students about Veterans Day. At the conclusion of the presentation, each student received their own U.S. flags.

A dwindling pool of senior members at the Center makes it necessary to ask for volunteers for these activities. Please help with just a few hours a month, so the Boardman Senior Center can continue functioning. Also, please support the Center by attending the Tuesday & Thursday lunches ---everyone is welcome!

Registration has been open since midOctober so some classes may be full.

Students needing assistance are encouraged to stop by or call the Workforce Training Center for assistance. Hours for the Center are 9 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am to 5 pm on Fridays. Call us at 541481-2099.

Students are reminded that the BMCC Workforce Training Center is here for their distance education and placement testing needs. It is always best to call ahead for an appointment at 541-481-2099. Students can also transmit financial aid and admission documents as well as pay their bill at the center.

Winter Term will begin on January 8, 2018. A full slate of Industrial Systems Technology classes will begin that week.
