Hermiston Festival Of Trees to be held December 4th The 2021 Festival of Trees is set for Saturday, Dec. 4 at the Hermiston Community Center. The event goes from 2 to 7 p.m. and will have a different look this year. There will not be a dinner auction or Family Day. Instead, guests will be invited to stroll through and purchase items on sale. The community center will feature a stunning, festive Christmas display, with beautifully decorated large trees, small trees, holiday gift baskets, and Christmas stockings, and more. Guests will also have a chance to win one of 100 special giveaway gifts during this Day of 100 Gifts. There will not be a dinner auction or Family Day. Instead, guests will be invited to stroll through and purchase items on sale. The community center will feature a stunning, festive Christmas display, with beautifully decorated large trees, small trees, holiday gift baskets, and Christmas stockings, and more. Guests will also have a chance to win one of 100 special giveaway gifts during this Day of 100 Gifts. Each festival item will be tagged with a “Buy it Now” price. Items can be purchased
at the event or at the same time through an online auction that can be easily accessed and navigated with a phone or computer. Purchased items will be tagged as SOLD, so all guests will be able to enjoy the full display. Items will be available for pick up on Sunday, Dec. 5 at noon. The Kiwanis Giving Tree will also provide guests the opportunity to make cash donations to the Hermiston Second Grade Swim Program. While there will be no Family Day, there will be a Family Hour from 2 to 3 p.m. Tickets are $25 per family. General Admission is from 3 to 7 p.m. and tickets are $20 per person. There will also be wine tasting from 4-7 p.m., making it a 21-and-older event at that point. Tickets will allow for specific one-hour admittance in order to limit the number of

Local FFA member awarded National American FFA Degree INDIANAPOLIS (10/30/2021 National FFA Organization) – Each year, the National FFA Organization honors FFA members who show the utmost dedication to the organization through their desire to develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. The American FFA Degree is bestowed upon a select group of students in recognition of their years of academic and professional excellence. This year 3,863 American Degrees were awarded. Sierra Alexis Villegas, a member of the Riverside FFA chapter in Boardman, Oregon was awarded the American FFA Degree at the 94th National FFA Convention & Expo Oct. 27-30. Sponsored by Case IH, Elanco Animal Health, NAU Country Insurance Company, Pepsico Inc, RAM Trucks and Syngenta, the award recognizes demonstrated ability and outstanding achievements in agricultural business, production, processing or service programs. To be eligible, FFA members must have earned and productively invested $10,000 through a supervised agricultural experience (SAE) program in which they own their own business or hold a professional position as an employee. Recipients must also complete 50 hours community service and demonstrate outstanding leadership abilities and civic involvement through completion of a long list of FFA and community activities. Less than one percent of FFA members achieve the American FFA Degree.

JVB Dairy and NW Farm Supply honored with friends of Morrow County 4-H Award Saturday, October 17, JVB Dairy of Ione and NW Farm Supply of Hermiston were both honored with the Friends of Morrow County 4-H Award at their annual Achievement Night awards recognition. This is an honor voted upon by the 4-H leaders and volunteers in the county annually. JVB Dairy, owned and operated by John and Jana VandenBrink of Ione. For the past several years, JVB Dairy has made a point of supporting the youth at our annual livestock auction. Last year, when the youth livestock auction went all virtual, JVB Dairy was one

La Grande performers unite for 29th Annual Holiday Music Festival Nov. 22, 2021 LA GRANDE, Ore. – La Grande will see the return of The Observer’s annual Holiday Music Festival sponsored by Koza Family Dental Care after last year’s cancellation, with the 29th annual event set for Dec. 4 and 5 at the Eastern Oregon University’s McKenzie Theatre. The festival invites community members and EOU ensembles to play a collection of classic holiday hits from all over the world in a gala style of short performances. “It’s a musical celebration of the holidays. It’s various types of music, there’s a little something for everybody. It’s community members and EOU ensembles. This year it will be done in one act,” said Professor of Music and director of the EOU Chamber Choir Peter Wordelman. In total, 120 performers from the EOU Chamber Choir, Grande Ronde Symphony Orchestra, 45th Parallel Ensemble, African Drumming Group and EOU Fiddle Ensemble will play a mix of new
music and classics . “My favorite part is that we get to do it, it’s the same answer you’re getting from everybody. It’s nice that we can do the festival since we missed the festival last year,” Wordelman said. The festival performance lasts just over one hour and will feature a brief intermission. “The community will say they’ve come to the festival for 20 years or 25 years or every single one of them. So it becomes part of their holiday season rituals that they traditionally come to this event, and so it has tremendous community support,” Wordelman said. About 16 students, four organisers and 12 movers work behind the scenes to keep the performance seamless. The EOU Foundation has partnered with the production and is accepting donations. All money raised from donations and ticket sales will fund EOU Music programs and scholarships. “All of the money that’s raised at the festival goes into music funds in the EOU Foun-
dation, and over the 30-year span, not only with this festival but otherwise, we’ve raised well over $600,000,” Wordelman said. The production is also supported by two local businesses alongside The Observer, Koza Family Dental Care is the main sponsor and Fitzgerald Flowers provides all stage decorations. The 29th Annual Holiday Music Festival will be performed at 7:30 p.m., Dec. 4 and 3 p.m., Dec. 5 in McKenzie Theatre, located in Loso Hall. The same performances are scheduled for both days. The theater will be filled to three-fourths capacity to allow for social distancing, and face coverings are required for all attendees. Admission costs $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and EOU students. Tickets are available at Red Cross Drug or online at eou.edu/music. Advanced ticket purchase is highly recommended. Morrow County School District inclement weather plan By: Marie Shimer With winter quickly approaching we would like to share our inclement weather plan with you. Our goal is to provide the safest possible learning opportunities for our students and staff. Throughout the winter the district administration closely monitors weather and road conditions in our district and strives to inform families of changes in a timely manner. Typically, we try to notify family’s the night before of a late start or closure, but there are times when the weather changes overnight and requires an early morning change in school plans. This year, Morrow County School District will continue a 3-hour delay for bad weather.
With this later start on inclement weather days it will allow us more time to evaluate the weather and road conditions before students and staff are traveling for school. Buses will run their n o r m a l routes, only 3 hours later. On late start days’ schools will still have breakfast and lunch available to students. The following five herbs are among the easiest to overwinter, and with cold protection, can result in expanded harvest windows. They are also adaptable to a wide range of cooking styles. Parsley seed is tough to germinate, and requires patience. Parsley An oddity of the plant world, parsley and its relatives are biennial, completing the life cycle in two years. In a protected location, parsley can provide fresh, vitamin C-packed leaves for close to two years. Once it sets flower, the leaves will become bitter, but the flowers last a long time in a vase and are beneficial to pollinators. Parsley seed is tough to germinate, and requires patience. Parsley is a taprooted plant that does not always transplant well. Once past the seedling stage, it’s easy to grow. Rosemary Invest in a plant, it’s tough to grow from seed, and make sure it’s in a place where the soil will drain well even in winter. “Wet feet” is death to rosemary. A sunny, southern exposure, possibly in a rock garden, is a good location. Older plants are especially hardy, and the evergreen plants provide leaves all year. To introduce the flavor and aroma to pickier eaters without the leaves, try using the woody stems as kabob skewers.
Chives Once a patch of chives gets going, it provides a long- term source of mild, oniony flavor. The flowers are edible and beautiful as a salad or soup garnish. Chives should be cut back in the fall, and will not be available over the winter, but are one of the first signs of life in the
early spring garden. When harvesting, clip chives all the way back to the ground. More leaves will replace those, but half-cut leaves do not re-grow. Thyme This low-growing perennial is well suited to a rock garden, and when blooming in spring and fall is a great resource for our pollinators. Thyme cultivars vary widely in cold hardiness- look for varieties that specifically mention hardiness for best results in our area. As long
as soil is well drained, thyme is easy to grow- and easy to use in the kitchen. Oregano Oregano slightly less hardy than, but otherwise similar to thyme, oregano is easy to grow. There are many varieties of oregano, which needs a sunny location and will also benefit from the soil- warming properties of a rock garden. Oregano will go dormant in winter. You can cut back its long runners in fall, and store the cuttings in a glass jar. These will keep for several weeks in the fridge, increasing the length of time they can be enjoyed fresh. Several of these herbs are also easy to store, so they can be enjoyed even when not fresh from the plant. Parsley loses most of its flavor dried, so freezing clipped leaves in ice cube trays is an alternative. Freeze clipped leaves and water to make herbal ice cubes, store in a bag when frozen, and drop into soups or stews near the end of cooking. Chives, rosemary, and thyme are all very easy to dry, whether with a dehydrator or by hanging stems upside down in bunches to dry in the open air. For those with little garden space or small yards, these herbs are also all suitable for container gardening, but overwintering success for containerized plants varies from that of those in the ground.

Students who need assistance with advising or registration are encouraged to call the BMCC Workforce Training Center at 541-4812099, or better yet, stop by. The Center is open Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm with later times by appointment. BMCC students now have access to food boxes or they may order from the BMCC food pantry. A new addition to the Workforce Training Center is a Grab and Go counter supplied by the Health and Wellness department. Many of the students who attend here stay for 3 or more hours at a time, sometimes during meal times. The Grab
