Park’s Summer Recreation Programs wrap up Boardman Park & Recreation District’s Summer Recreation Program wrapped up on July 19th with special activities for kids of all ages.

A total of 180 kids ages 5 through 12 signed up for Funtastic Kidz and 36 signed up for Teen Summer.

The younger set had a splash on water days, fun with arts and crafts like tie dye ice cream and lots of age appropriate games. Teen Summer enjoyed the kayaks and canoes, a trip to Red Dot Paintball and a wrap-up trip to Silverwood.

These lucky teens took a trip to Red Dot Paintball in Tri Cities and had fun, even though it was hot! It’s a good thing the Park took lots of water!

Premier Physical Therapy of Hermiston introduces new therapist Premier Physical Therapy in Hermiston, Oregon specializes in hands-on treatment to relieve pain and restore function. Director Justin Kitchen, has a doctorate in Physical Therapy from Eastern Washington University, graduating in 2010. He was previously a licensed massage therapist in Spokane, and his interest led him to further his education and become a physical therapist. Justin Kitchen, DPT Justin worked in their MiltonFreewater location before he and his family moved to Hermiston in 2011. He believes in hands-on therapy with his patients, and spends time treating each patient

one-on-one. He does not believe in utilizing aides. He specializes in manual therapy, joint mobilization, strain/counterstrain, massage techniques, and last year he completed a certificate for orthopedic movement specialist. He also treats chronic pain, neck, back and sports injuries.

Assisting Justin in treating patients in Hermiston is Bryce Mortensen, Doctor of Physical Therapy. He is a graduate of University of Utah. He grew up in Kennewick, where he and his family still reside. Being treated by a physical therapist for a sports injury when he was a young athlete is what prompted Bryce’s interest in physical therapy. “I saw how incredible the therapists were in getting their patients back to their normal routine,” he said. “I love the human body’s anatomy and the one-on-one with patients is what brought me to Premier Physical Therapy and Justin,” he added.

His background includes working at Kadlec Intensive Care Unit and also in-patient rehabilitation and orthopedic rehabilitation. He also has a background in vestibular therapy (dizziness, stroke, balance disorder) along with neuro rehabilitation (brain injury). Currently he works half time in the Richland office and half time in the Hermiston office, with hopes he can expand his patient base to be-

Free concert series in Boardman and Irrigon continues in August Blue Mountain Spanish Sound will perform for the FREE Music in the Parks outdoor summer concert series on August 6 th at the Boardman Marina Park, located off N. Main Street on Marine Drive.

Blue Mountain Spanish Sound is an acoustic guitar duo comprised of Jesse Campos and Lance Smith.

Two of the most popular performers in the Walla Walla Valley, they play all-original classical guitar music with Latin influences and have released two albums. The Music in the Parks outdoor summer concert series is held each summer alternating between Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks. The concerts are free to the public and begin at 7 p.m. on Monday nights. The 2018 concert series runs through August 13th. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.

Concessions will be available for purchase at the Boardman event, courtesy of the Boardman Little League. The series is funded by the Morrow County Unified Recreation District and Portland General Electric and sponsored by the North Morrow Community Foun-

EOHLA offers youth mental health first aid training in Northeast Oregon counties Morrow, Umatilla, and Union Counties Part of National Initiative to Increase Mental Health Literacy Lakeview, OR (January 2018) –The Eastern Oregon Healthy Living Alliance (EOHLA), in coordination with InterMountain Education Service District and Greater Oregon Behavioral Health, is providing Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) trainings to teachers and support staff in Umatilla County.

YMHFA is a national program that is designed to give school staff the proper tools to interact with students that may be experiencing mental health or substance use problems. There are currently five training dates scheduled in partnership with the IMESD: ·August 13, 2018 – Boardman, OR ·August 14, 2018 – La Grande, OR ·August 16, 2018 – Pendleton, OR In YMHFA, First Aiders learn a 5-step action plan that guides them through the process of reaching out and offering appropriate support. Staff trained in YMHFA can help to identify students experiencing emotional problems sooner, improve coordination with existing mental health supports and resources, and inform students and their families of local supports available in their community.

Suicide is now the second leading cause of death for adolescents aged 15-19 and half of all mental health problems begin by age 14.

In the recent 2017 Healthy Teens Survey conducted by the Oregon Health Authority 25.4% of 8th graders and 32.5% of 11th graders in Umatilla County reported that during the past 12 months they felt so sad or hopeless almost every day for two weeks or more in a row that they stopped doing some usual activities. Additionally, mental health is a regional health priority in eastern Oregon, because large percentages of eastern Oregonians self-report depression or other mental health symptoms; however, they fail to seek the appropriate care. Early detection and treatment of mental health and substance use problems is crucial for adolescents and can affect not only

emotional wellness, but also their academic success.

Eastern Oregon Healthy Living Alliance Executive Director, John Adams, understands the impact of mental health and the importance of the training. “I know first-hand how mental health can impact a student. I experienced depression and anxiety as a college student, and, ten years later, my brother committed suicide at the same age.

For years I was afraid and ashamed to talk about these experiences until I became trained in Mental Health First Aid. This training works because it helps to reduces stigma, and it gives folks information and tools to talk about difficult mental health situations and experiences with others. We can only help people when we feel comfortable enough to reach out to others, and that’s why I’m so passionate about the trainings,” says Adams.

An invitation to the Senior Citizens of Boardman Senior Citizens Day is August the 21st and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church would like to invite the Seniors of Boardman to a Senior Citizens Appreciation Service to be followed by refreshments and snacks.

We recognize that our seniors are one of the most valuable resources we have and would like to show our appreciation. Come and spend some time in Fellowship and Worship with us and afterwards catch up with old friends and share some stories.

Food science activities coming to Boardman Sage Center Celebrate Oregon Agriculture with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry at the SAGE Center on August 24 & 25.

The SAGE Center is hosting the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) for a free familyfriendly event. The public is invited to attend the program that will feature food science activities that celebrate Oregon agriculture and popular exhibits from the Portlandbased OMSI facility.

“Last year’s event was a huge success,” said Andrea Orcutt with

the SAGE Center. “We’re excited to partner with OMSI again this year to get people interested in the wonders of food and where it comes from.”

There will be a variety of activities, including pH experiments, microscope art and soil science. The event takes place over two days, August 24 and 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, at 101 Olson

Road in Boardman, Oregon.

Bank of Eastern Oregon announces two promotions Veteran banker Anita Orem, was recently promoted from Assistant Vice President to Vice President, according to Jeff Bailey, president and CEO of Bank of Eastern Oregon, Orem has aspent nearly 26 years with the bank, working in virtually every operational department during that time. Her current duties involve supervision of the electronic banking function for the bank.

New Pizzeria & Brewery in Boardman receives funding BOARDMAN, Ore. – Today, Burnt Field, LLC was approved for a loan of $40,000 from the Eastern Oregon Business Development Loan Fund, managed by Morrow Development Corporation. Together with local partners like the Bank of Eastern Oregon and the City of Boardman, this funding will assist owners Logan Mayfield and Michelle Seeley with the opening of a new pizzeria in Boardman.

Logan Mayfield has worked for Ordnance Brewing for four years as Michelle Seeley has worked for

the City of Boardman a year and a half. Together they plan to operate Burnt Field Brewing, an eatery that will give the aspect of fine dining and the element of a tavern with high-quality beer. The brewery plans to be very innovative as there are limited eateries and brewpubs in Boardman, Oregon.

The Pizzeria and brewery will be located at 1 Marine Drive in Boardman, across from the Port of Morrow headquarters.

“We are grateful for the continued partnership of Morrow Devel-

opment Corporation and the Bank of Eastern Oregon for financing new businesses. We welcome Burnt Field Brewing to our Port facilities,” said Gary Neal, Port of Morrow General Manager.

A case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever is diagnosed in Morrow County One case of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever (RMSF) was confimed in Morrow County.

RMSF is a serious bacterial infection spread by ticks and can occur ain humans and dogs.

“To our knowledge, this is the first case of this tickborne disease in Morrow County,” said Dr. Emilio DeBess, Public Health Veterinarian for the Oregon Health Authority.

The disease was first discovered in the Rocky Mountain area of the United States, however, currently most of the 700 yearly cases occur on the Atlantic and Pacific coasts and the South-Central part of the country.

In the early stages of the disease, an individual can suffer fever, nausea, body aches, vomiting and headache. Later symptoms may include a skin rash, abdominal pain, joint pain and diarrhea.

The rash usually starts on the arms and ankles and moves to the palms of the hands or soles of the feet.

Three signs that may suggest a RMSF infection are fever, rash and history of a tick bite.

This past winter was relatively mild which means an early and abundant tick season in Oregon.

The most common tick in Eastern Oregon is Dermacentor variabilis, known as the “American Dog Tick,” which can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted-Fever and Tularemia. These ticks prefer to feed on dogs, rodents and other large animals, but will find their way to people too. Another tick found in Eastern Oregon is the Dermacenter andersoni or the “Rocky Mountain Wood Tick” which can transmit Rocky Mountain Spotted-Fever, Colorado Tick Fever, Tick Relapsing Fever and Tularemia. This tick may also cause partial paralysis. It is important to remove it as soon as the paralysis happens or death can occur. After the tick is removed, the person will generally recover within 24 to 72 hours.

The following are things to remember to prevent tick bites. · Ticks in Oregon are active primarily in the spring and summer, but also can be found in the fall. · Bear and turkey hunters can

encounter “seed” ticks which are virtually impossible to see unless you have a magnifying glass. · Check yourself for ticks more than once. to seek a more suitable “live” host which will probably be you! · Other things to remember when in tick country: Be careful when walking in thick vegetation, ticks usually “crest” on the uphill side of a trail, wear a heavy-duty repellant with DEET as the active ingredient, tuck your pant legs inside of your boots and wear a hat.

If a person finds a tick embedded in their body, it is recom-

mended to have someone else remove it. The person should use tweezers or forceps rather than fingers, grasp the mouth or head of the tick as close to the skin as possible, gently pull the tick straight out, steadily and firmly. The mouth of a tick is barbed, so don’t be alarmed if a little bit of it breaks off into the skin. Always wash your hands and apply antiseptic in the affected area.

Lakeview, OR (June 5, 2018) – Eastern Oregon Healthy Living Alliance (EOHLA) has launched a new project to increase colon cancer screenings in Morrow, Sherman, and Gilliam counties. Annual screenings with a Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) kit, which is a screening kit that can be done at home that checks for blood in the stool, are recommended annually for adults aged 50-75.

Free screening kits will be provided at various locations in each participating county. Anyone can pick up a kit, complete the kit in the privacy of their own home, and return the kit at designated locations.

Completed kits returned with the provided survey card will be entered into a drawing for a $50 Visa gift card, where 6 will be given away in each of Sherman and Gilliam counties and 12 will be given away in Morrow County. Free screening kits are provided in the following locations.

WHEATHEARTS’ ALMOND BUTTER CAKE W/ CHOCOLATE FROSTING (throwback to the Oregon Wheat Growers League 1977 official cake recipe) MIX UNTIL FLUFFY: 2/3 c. soft butter 1 3/4 c. granulated sugar 2 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 tsp. almond extract 1/2 tsp. lemon extract Blend ingredients together well, then mix on high speed for 5 minutes SIFT TOGETHER: 3 C. unsifted cake flour 1 tsp. salt 2 1/2 tsp. baking powder On low speed, add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with 1 1/4 c. milk (Beginning and ending with dry ingredients). Pour into two greased and floured 9" round cake pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until done.

CHOCOLATE FROSTING: 1/4 cup. Melted margarine 1/3 cup milk 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 3 1/2 c. confectioners’ sugar In a large bowl, beat margarine and cocoa together until combined. Add milk and vanilla; beat until smooth. Gradually beat in confectioners’ sugar until desired consistency is achieved. Adjust with more milk or confectioners’ sugar if necessary.

GLAZED DONUT MUFFINS Prep: 10 m Cook: 15 m Total time: 25 mins Author: Lil’ Luna Serves: 12 muffins INGREDIENTS: 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup veg. oil 3/4 cup sugar 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 large eggs 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. ground nutmeg 2 tsp. cinnamon 3/4 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla extract 2 2/3 cup flour 1 cup milk GLAZE: 3 Tbs. melted butter 1 cup powdered sugar 1 tsp. vanilla 2 Tbs. hot water 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees. Line cupcake tray with liners.

2. In your mixer, beat together butter, oil and sugars until smooth. Add eggs and beat until fluffy. Add powder, soda, nutmeg, cinnamon, salt vanilla, milk and flour.

Beat well.

3. Spoon batter into liners and fill to tops. Bake for 1517 minutes or until tops are golden and springy to the touch. Let cool 10 minutes before adding Glaze.

4. To make the glaze, mix melted butter, powdered sugar, vanilla and water together. Mix until smooth.

5. When muffins have cooled slightly, dip the muffin top into the glaze and allow the glaze to harden. Once hardened, dip a second time and allow to harden. Serve and enjoy.

Morrow County Chili-Cook off Rules 1. Chili is defined as any combination of ground, chopped or cubed meats together with spices and seasonings along with tomatoes, onions, peppers, beans and liquids such as broth. Ingredients may not be pre-cooked in any way prior to the commencement of the cook-off. The only exceptions are canned or bottled tomatoes, sauces, peppers, broth, beans and grinding or mixing of spices.

2. Contestants should be at the Fair Office at 9 a.m. to register and set up. Food preparation and cooking begins at 11 a. m. Chili must be ready for judges by 3:00p.m. This allows a preparation period of 4 hours.

3. One entry of chili per table.

4. Contestants must cook at least 6 quarts of chili; one pint will be submitted for judging. Keep in mind the more chili you make the more available to taste by the public for the People’s Choice Award.

5. Each contestant is responsible for supplying a 2.5 lb. fire extinguisher.

6. Each contestant is responsible for supplying cooking apparatus and cooking utensils along with

food supplies. The Morrow County Fair will supply judging cups and 2 oz. cups and spoons for tasting samples by the public.

7. Chili will be judged based on flavor, color, aroma, use of spices and aftertaste. Each criterion can be awarded up to 5 points for a possible total of 25 points. In the event of a tie; the final chilis will be rejudged for the top three.

8. Morrow County Fair will provide two chairs and a table upon request.

9. Contestants will be assigned a number and given an official judging cup, which will be turned in to the judges table at the official time for judging.

10.Winners in the following categories will be announced at 5:30 p.m.

1st place, 2nd place, 3rd place.

11.Judging will be blind as the judges will only know the numbers for the chilis. A blind sheet will be provided to the judges and competitors names will be applied after the judges select the chili that place 1st, 2nd and 3rd place 12.For people’s choice chili; the public will be provided a ticket to place in a bucket at your table. The booth receiving the most votes will be the people’s choice.

13.Ambiance is great; plan to decorate your table if you like.

14.Representatives of Morrow County Fair will be available to direct set-up.

15.Except for chili tasting; contestants will sell no food, drink or novelties to the public.

he Blue Mountain Community College Workforce Training Center is open through the month of August, Monday through Thursday from 9 am to 7 pm to assist students with distance education test proctoring and all things related to attending BMCC in the Fall. This includes Success Coaching, registration, placement tests, financial aid document transmission and general information.

Letter to the Editor An Open Letter to the Boardman Cemetery Board of Directors: When our time on this earth comes to an end it is our desire that our bodily remains be cremated. Therefore, we will not require a grave plot or headstone.

We have made arraignments for a small inscription to be added to our respective family plots in the hometowns of our youth (Frances in the small town of Umapine, OR; Eddie in Lostine, OR) However since we have lived in Boardman nearly 50 years, well more than half our lives, we consider Boardman “home”. We’d like to leave some small indication of our having passed this way.

We suspect there may be others in a similar position. We therefore, request the cemetery district erect a ‘remembrance wall’ on which families of deceased ancestors not otherwise remembered could have an inscription engraved. We envision a polished marble slab four or five feet tall and 10 or so feet long set upright in a heavy concrete foundation. We doubt that the district’s meager tax revenues would be sufficient for construction of a remembrance wall however, we believe that should the district undertake this project it may well be financed with voluntary contributions.

Needless to say rules would have to be adopted regarding eligibility, inscription appearance and content. But we consider those rather minor considerations. Please let us know if you undertake this project and to whom we should address our contribution.

The Hernandez family would like to thank the community for all the heart felt prayers, support and love for their mother Minerva (Minnie) Hernandez.

Minnie suffered a stroke back in December and recently had to have one of her legs amputated. She is expected to come home soon to recover from the surgery.

Minnie worked at U& I Potato plant for many years and was well known as the number two hire. The house she lives in was purchased from Vern Russell and moved from the old town of Boardman, she and her husband Bernardo raised their family there.

Their son Bernard was the first baby born in the new town on October 31, 1966.

Boardman Park and Recreation is looking to contract with certified instructors to teach classes and LIFEGUARDS (Fulltime or Part-time) at the Pool and Recreation Center. The Boardman Pool and Recreation Center is a new indoor 43,000 square foot center complete with an Aerobics room, double Gymnasium, Weight and Cardio room, a large Climbing Wall and an Aquatics section. The Aquatics area has features such as a large Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, Water Slide and a Vortex Pool that provides fun and resistant exercise for all.
