Free Boardman & Irrigon concerts continue in August

Cosmo’s Dream performs in Boardman.

Cosmo’s Dream will perform for the FREE Music in the Parks outdoor summer concert series on August 5th at the Boardman Marina Park, located off N. Main Street on Marine Drive.

Americana trio Cosmo’s Dream sings original tales of foggy-mountain megamalls, trailer-park guns and guitars, big black cats, Iditarod sled dogs, rising rivers, grandmas online, dark days ahead, beautiful beer, and Superman’s dilemma. This Tacomabased trio, which features Gen Obata on flatpick guitar and mandolin, Steve Nebel on guitar, and Kristi Nebel on bass, blends acoustic musicianship with solo vocals and dynamic three-part harmonies. Steve, Kristi, and Gen have recorded three solo CDs, nine duo CDs, and six band CDs. The trio has recorded their first Cosmo’s Dream CD and has left audiences excited about them all over the Northwest, the Midwest and the United Kingdom. Recent performances include 2018 FAR-West Folk Alliance in Los Angeles, Artichoke in Portland, Northwest Folklife Festival, a tour of 13 venues in the United Kingdom, and a tour across the U.S. to Folk Alliance Interna-

tional in Kansas City. They’re currently touring to Los Angeles from their home in Tacoma to attend FarWest Folk Alliance Conference.

They have numerous bookings planned this year including Northwest FolkLife Festival in Seattle.

Kristi was nominated by the Academy of Western Artists for Best Song and finished in the top five for Female Singer of the Year in 2014. Bob Sherman, producer of the popular and award-winning radio series “Woody’s Children” from New York, named the Nebel’s album “Raven Speaks” among his Best of 2010 Staff Picks for WFUV Radio. The album features the songwriting of Steve Nebel.

The final concert for the season will be Cale Moon performing on August 12th at the Irrigon Marina Park, located off Highway 730 in Irrigon. The Music in the Parks outdoor summer concert series is held each summer alternating between Boardman and Irrigon Marina Parks.

The concerts are free to the public and begin at 7 p.m. on Monday nights. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs and blankets.

The series is funded by the Mor-

row County Unified Recreation District and Portland General Electric and sponsored by the North Morrow Community Foundation. In the event of inclement weather, Boardman performances will be held at the SAGE Center and Irrigon performances will be held at the Irrigon Senior Center.

4th generation barber opens in Boardman old city hall

If the flag’s up, the barber is open for business!

Logan Sturdevant, who was raised in Crescent City, California, came to the Hermiston area in 2016 to visit a friend who had moved into the area. “He told me I would not believe how friendly everybody is here and how affordable it is to live

here,” said Logan. Sure enough, he found he really loves living here, so he began plying his trade, barbering in the Hermiston/Umatilla area.

“I really wanted my own shop,” Logan adds. He could not believe that in the entire town of Boardman, there was not one barber, so he decided to set up shop here. The name of the shop: Spencer’s Barbershop of NorCal” relates to his grandfather, Lester Spencer, who was a barber in Crescent City, California for 70 years. Logan’s mother continues the tradition of barbering in Crescent City, along with cosmetology.

A fourth generation barber, Logan follows his great-grandfather, grandfather and mother in the tradition of barbering, and has interesting relics of their past displayed in his shop, located in the old Boardman city hall, 202 Main Street, Suite 7 (lower level). You could spend hours looking over some of the old barber’s clippers, photographs, and yes, he has stories that go with each piece! His barber chair was originally his grandfather’s who

purchased it new in 1963. The story goes, that the tsunami of 1964, which inundated Crescent City, carried the chair out to sea, before depositing it full of sand on the beach. Grandpa cleaned up the chair, and it is still in use! Ask Logan about the guitar hanging on the wall, and a whole new batch of stories comes out about his love of music and his ability to play anything from drums, mandolin to the guitar! Some photos on the wall of older Mercedes cars brings stories about Logan’s love for old Mercedes diesel cars, and he has two in various stages of renovation now.

Logan’s wife, Kati is a long time employee of Good Shepherd Hospital in the Imaging Department.

They share caring for his son Xander, age 9, her son Aaron, age 8 and daughter Zoee, age 12.

Riverside High School earns Presidential/ Congressional Academy Grant Riverside High School students earned the honor to attend the 2019 Presidential/Congressional Academy at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland with their teacher Crystal Kirk for two weeks in July with an all inclusive Civics Grant.

While attending the two week academy, Ms. Kirk, received highquality professional development in the content and methods of history and civics, which will benefit her students in the coming years.

Like the Presidential Academy, the Congressional Academy attended by our students also engaged them in high-quality, interactive instruction with eminent scholars and mentor teachers. Riverside High senior-AJ Cemore, Junior- Noah Reaves, and Sophomores-Hope Harwood and Azpen de Los Santos joined their teacher on trips to historic sites that included Gettysburg, Fort McHenry, the U.S. Capitol, the Library of Congress, the U.S. Supreme Court, Mount Vernon, Historic museums, and much more.

Our Riverside students had the opportunity to collaborate with their peers from around the country, establish new friendships, and build their research and presentation skills through participation in a simulated congressional hearing helping them learn and comprehend civics issues through hands on education. Both the teacher and students will engage in follow-up activities during the school year, aided by the online Student and Teacher History and Civics Forums using the resources of Learn.civiced.org.

City of Boardman welcomes back Toni Connell

Toni Connell is a familiar face at the City of Boardman. She recently re-joined the city as the new utility clerk after a five-year absence from the staff. During those five years she served on the city’s planning commission and most recently as a Boardman City Councilor.

Toni resigned her seat as City Councilor to be able to work full-time at City Hall.

Toni has lived in Boardman for 11 years with her husband Mike She volunteers for the local ambulance service. She enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, swimming and arts and crafts The city is currently seeking letters of interest from individuals willing to be considered for appointment to fill a vacancy on the City Council. The term expires December 31, 2020.

Those interested must have resided in the City of Boardman during the twelve months immediately preceding the appointment. Letters of interest must be received no later than 5:00pm, Thursday, August 1, 2019 to City Manager, Karen Pettigrew at Boardman City Hall for consideration. The City Council will interview the candidates, and appoint the new Councilor at their August 6, 2019 City Council meeting, scheduled for 7pm.

Boardman Industry Learning Center now open for industry-related child care By: Jessica Pollard , East Oregonian BOARDMAN — A new learning center opened its doors earlier this month, helping pave the way for industry-related child care in Eastern Oregon.

The Boardman Industry Learning Center was formed through a partnership between Boardman businesses, Umatilla Morrow County Head Start, and the Morrow County School District.

“This is new, we haven’t had partnerships with these businesses in a way that blends workforce development with early education.

This is a first-time kind of event,” said executive director at UMCHS Maureen McGrath.

Dan Daltoso, associate director at UMCHS, said the project began when employers in Morrow County heard from workers that child care in the area was scarce.

According to a study out of Oregon State University earlier this year, just 16% of children between the ages of 3 and 5 have access to regulated care in Morrow County.

Currently, the BILC has openings in its pilot class of up to 20 preschool students in the 3- to 5-year age range. The care provided is yearround and 10 hours a day, at a rate

of $400 a month.

The current maximum monthly state rate for preschool care is $680.

The BILC is able to keep the costs low with support from the involved businesses, and from the school district.

“It’s the only reason we can provide this high quality at a rate that is affordable to parents,” McGrath said.

In recent years, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce has held conferences and roadshows across the nation, declaring child care and early education to be industry issues. In 2017, a report released by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation cited a study revealing that 70% of the nonworking poor with children under age 5 cited “taking care of home/family” as their reason for not working.

And while some companies have child care or assistance available to their employees, like Nike, Intel and Microsoft, others don’t.

This spring, Bloomberg reported hundreds of working moms at Amazon began advocating for their workplace to provide backup day care by collecting anecdotal evidence to show that lack of care has caused some women to miss out on highlevel jobs. Some women, advocates stated, are even moving on to companies with more parent-friendly

policies.

Ryan Neal, manager at the Port of Morrow, said he has noticed an increase of dual-income families in the Boardman area.

“It’s all about employee retention and recruitment for industries and making sure we are able to provide the workforce needed with continuous growth,” Neal said, “We’re just here to help support that effort and try to make it as best as possible.”

Parents enrolling their children in BILC can expect an emphasis on social, emotional, and academic skillbuilding through activities like family-style eating, play, counting, and vocabulary building.

“A day in the life of a preschooler is a little bit what you see at home,” said Suellen Whitlock, family engagement director at UMCHS. “Being kindergarten ready is not just being able to write your name.”

The BILC pilot is open to everyone and will last three years, and organizers hope to eventually see it expand.

“There is quality learning from the moment they step through the doors,” Whitlock said. “It’s such a cool opportunity. I really think Boardman is doing something special.”

Food science activities coming to the SAGE Center Celebrate Oregon Agriculture with the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry at the SAGE Center on August 24 & 25.

The SAGE Center is hosting the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) for a free familyfriendly event. The public is invited to attend the program which features food science activities that celebrate Oregon agriculture and popular exhibits from the Portland-based OMSI facility.

There will be a variety of handson activities and experiments, including seed identification, pH experiments, microscope art and a puzzle of Oregon’s growing regions. The

program explores the science behind the food we eat and is fun for all ages.

“We are pleased to host an organization with a solid reputation for encouraging curiosity and exploration,” said Lisa Patrick, manager of the SAGE Center. “OMSI’s willingness to bring an array of new activities again this year is much appreciated.” The event takes place over two days, August 24 and 25, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day, at 101 Olson Road in Boardman, Oregon. 22 kids learn how to build at Nuts, Bolts and Thingamajigs Camp In its second year, the Eastern Oregon Nuts, Bolts, & Thingamajigs Camp is a practical and fun way for students to learn about the manufacturing process from start to finish. For 6th - 8th grade students, the camp was held at BMCC Workforce Training Center and the RHS Shop on July 22 - 26th. The camp cost $50 per student and included shirts and lunch each day plus project supplies.

There were a limited number of financial waivers. Twenty-two students participated.

“Our goal is to show students that they can innovate, design, and build anything they put their minds to,” says Camp Director Kalie Davis.

While there is curriculum and guest speakers, the camp is not about sitting and listening. The program is designed to engage students with hands-on activities like teambuilding games, industry tours, and two manufacturing projects that include learning how to use SolidWorks, computer-aided design/engineering software used by engineers and designers worldwide. The week ends with a showcase of projects and family bar-b-que.

Paula, a sixth grade student shares, “We made a solar panel pow-

ered car Monday and now we’re making step stools. I’ve never really gotten to use a saw before, so that’s cool. It’s a really cool experience. We get to learn a lot of neat things.”

The leaders enjoy the time as much as the students do.

“I used to be at these camps when I was younger and now I’m able to help teach these kids,” says Daniel Rodriguez-Pena, the workforce training intern. “It’s a lot of fun. I go home pretty tired because they’re long and busy days, but good days too because everyone is learning and that’s the most important thing.”

Davis concludes, “We love seeing each student light up when they transform a pile of wood into something valuable or learn something new that excites them about a future career.”

In order to complete their step stool project, the students learned how to use a drill, a miter saw, an electric sander and then stained and painted their projects.

“We had 3 1/2 days to build the step stools,” says Erin Heideman.

“When I was a shop teacher in Ione, it would have taken us weeks to complete that!”

The students constructed the 4inch solar car kits in an afternoon.

The Nuts, Bolts, and Thingamajigs Camp provides opportunities for junior high students to learn about careers and the process of manufacturing, creating, and building. The Nuts, Bolts, and Thingamajigs camp is sponsored by a grant from The Foundation of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association, Intl., and by Blue Mountain Community College, Port of Morrow, Boardman Foods, Inc., AWS, Oregon State University, GO-STEM, LambWeston, Oregon Pump Works, and the SAGE Center Assisting with the camp were Kalie Davis POM Workforce Training Program Manager, Anna Brown Umatilla County OSU 4-H Educator, Erin Heideman Morrow County OSU 4-H Educator, Ken Jacobs Shop Teacher at Sunridge School in Pendleton, Daniel & Jennifer Rodriguez Port of Morrow Interns, Anne Morter BMCC WTC Manager Blanca Delgado BMCC Office Specialist.

For the final day, each student invited their families to see their projects and enjoy lunch with them: hamburgers, hot dogs, salads, cake and ice cream. Each student received a “Certificate of Completion” for their hard work.

Small solar car kits were purchased for each of the 22 students.

The cars were assembled in the shop class at Riverside JR/SR High School. The students loved building their solar cars and were able to show them off to their parents on the final day of camp.

Step stools were designed in the Solid Works CAD program, supplies were purchased and provided to each of the 22 students. This provided a hands on learning experience of how to assemble, paint, and stain the final product.

Students visited Lamb Weston as part of the Nuts, Bolts, and Thingamajig Camp where they met with their HR Team to learn about the company and many types of career opportunities. They also went on a tour and enjoyed a sampling of their fries.

Ken Jacob, shop teacher at Sunridge school in Pendleton volunteers his time each year to the students of the camp. He teaches them safety and how to use shop tools such as drills, miter saws and electric sanders. Also assisting Jacob this year was Erin Reitman, who before she became the Morrow County OSU 4-H Educator, was a high school shop teacher at Ione for 20 years. Heideman said “It’s fun to work with the younger students and Ken in the shop.

Boardman Thunder 4th of July Celebration huge success 4th of July recap by Torrie Griggs Boardman Thunder 4th of July was a huge success this year. We saw record amount of entries in our parade and events at the Boardman Marina Park went from 8:30 am until after the spectacular fireworks show funded by Morrow County Unified Rec District at dusk.

The day started out with the Color Fun Run; we had 70 participants this year that competed in the 5K/10K walk and run. Before the start, everyone enjoyed music by DJ Cora, a friendly misting of water from our Boardman Fire Department and then the runners enjoyed a moment of fun by throwing power color into the air to kick off the event.

Friends, families and out of town guests toured the trail set down main street into the Boardman Marina and returned to end on the RHS Jr/Sr track. Throughout the trail volunteers threw a mix of colors on the runners while they passed by for both the 5K and 10K routes, the last color station was Portview Apartments; a sponsor for the event, greeted the runners close to the finish line for the 5K with color and a cold bottle of water.

The parade this year was a wellrepresented event by our First responders, distinguished citizens, local businesses, youth and adult organizations, along with many local old cars and novelty groups that

included horses. This year’s award winners where: Mayors Choice – Gems Cheer Royals, Most Patriotic – Café Cultura, Best of Show – Elite Tree Service.

The Columbia Youth Soccer had a tournament held for all ages that kept things busy. During this time food vendors had their grills going keeping guests fed and hydrated, while everyone enjoyed all the food and goodies available, they walked around and shopped the vendors who brought homemade goods, wooden signs, ways to support local organizations and information.

The kids were kept busy with a bouncy house donated by Boardman Park and Rec and an obstacle bouncy house. During this time DJ Cora kept everyone entertained with a mix of music and video

footage of the day events.

As the day wound down, people started to find their favorite spot to listen to live music by Cruise Control and wait for the fireworks show.

The spectacular fireworks show lasted for a continuous 18 minutes this year with the traditional fire ball for the final piece to close out a wonderful 4th of July.

One last thing, I would love to say another huge thank you to our many sponsors for our yearly 4th of July Boardman Thunder. Without all of you this event wouldn’t have such spectacular fireworks show and amazing entertainment throughout the day.

A grand opening is scheduled for Labor Day weekend. Hours will be Mon-Sat from 10am to 6pm.

Items they have focused on carrying: gifts, handmade gifts, various crafts and goods, candy, drinks, home and garden decor, jewelry, baked goods, refinished furniture, toys and much more.

Manning the store will be Richard and his wife, Natasha and oldest son Hans (now 22). All are graduates of Riverside High School.

Richard is a skilled wood crafter, and a good selection of his cutting boards, bottle openers, jewelery boxes, hand carved valet trays, small furniture and other items are available in the store.

He also will handle special order one

of a kind items.

Natasha is a whiz at cake baking

and decorating -- everything from 3D decor, to weddings, to birthdays and all occasion cakes. Natasha’s Cake Creations will take your order! She’s a multi-talented lady, who also refinishes furniture, dressers, shelves, etc.

Hans is an artist, and is now hand drawing designs for custom hats, which he then applies a protective coating to preserve the design.

The idea behind the store is to have a Boardman based location to promote local artisans. They will take consignments from all you local artisans!

They will also carry honey and other bee products from Dancing Bee Acres, from Irrigon.

They carry a huge selection of candies, some hand crafted, including fudge, chocolate and coconut macaroons.

“We have high-end to low-end gifts; ther is something for everyone,” says Richard.

West Nile virus, a mild flu-like disease spread by mosquitoes, has been detected in mosquitoes at a testing site in Morrow County, Ore., according to Oregon Public Health officials.

The mosquitoes, found near the City of Irrigon, are the second to test positive for the disease in Oregon in 2019.

Health officials are advising people in Morrow County to take precautions against mosquitoes to avoid the risk of infection, including preventing mosquito bites. West Nile is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. “The risk of contracting West Nile virus may be low, but we do encourage people to take appropriate precautions to protect themselves against mosquito bites,” said Greg Barron, Manager of North Morrow Vector Control District. “We will continue to increase our mosquito control operations utilizing our Ultra Low Volume (ULV) truck mounted sprayers and possibly some spraying aerially to reduce adult mosquito populations,” Barron said.

“About one in five infected people may show signs of West Nile virus. People at risk of serious illness include individuals 50 and older, and people with immune-compromising conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure,” cautions Shelley Wight, Communicable Disease Coordinator for Morrow County Health Department. Reminding providers that West Nile virus testing is available for both humans and animals. Please contact the local health department for further information on lab testing instructions.

West Nile symptoms may include fever above 100 degrees and severe headache, stiff neck, mental confusion, muscle weakness, shaking, paralysis or rash. People should contact their health care provider if experiencing any of these symptoms.

The incubation period is usually two to 14 days. Rarely, infected individuals may develop an infection of the brain or spinal column that can be severe or may cause death. This is especially of concern to those who have a compromised immune system, or the elderly.

The number of mosquito pools samples of about 50 mosquitoes -

testing positive in any area could lead to infection, Dr. Emilio DeBess, veterinarian at the Oregon Health Authority’s Public health Division, recommends people and animals be protected against mosquito bites.

“It’s very easy for people to prevent bites from mosquitoes that may carry West Nile virus,” DeBess says.

“Although the risk of contracting West Nile virus is low, people can take simple precautions to keep these insects at bay if they’re headed outdoors.”

DeBess offers these tips: · Eliminate sources of standing water that are a breeding ground for mosquitoes. This includes watering troughs, bird baths, clogged gutters and old tires. · When engaged in outdoor activities at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, protect yourself by using mosquito repellants containing DEET, oil of lemon eucalyptus or Picardin, and follow the directions on the container. · Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants in mosquito-infested areas. · Make sure screen doors and windows are in good repair and fit tightly.

Last week, in Morrow County, four mosquito pools tested positive for WNV. In 2018, there were two human cases of West Nile virus Harney and Clackamas counties. The virus was found in one bird, 58 mosquito pools — samples of about 50 mosquitoes each — and two horses. In 2017, seven humans, 92 mosquito pools, five horses and one bird tested positive for West Nile. The virus also can be found in chickens,

squirrels and dogs.

Climate change effects such as increased temperature and changes in rainfall have led to longer mosquito seasons and are contributing to the spread of West Nile virus, health officials say. They agree these and other climate change indicators must be considered to help people better prepare for future transmission of the disease.

Morrow County Fair’s cake baking contest Sponsored by the Oregon Wheat Growers League FIRST PRIZE = $35 SECOND PRIZE = $25 THIRD PRIZE = $15 Chocolate Banana Bundt CakeSource: Oregon Wheat Growers League Ingredients: ½ cup butter or margarine 1½ cups sugar, divided 2 cups allpurpose flour 1 cup mashed, very ripe bananas ¾ tsp. baking soda ½ cup sour cream ¼ tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. vanilla extract 1½ cups semisweet chocolate chips 2 eggs, separated 1½ cups melted confectioners’ sugar Preheat oven to 350°F. Lightly grease a 10-inch tube pan.

Beat butter and 1 cup sugar in a large

bowl until smooth. Stir in bananas, sour cream, vanilla and egg yolks.

Combine flour, baking soda and baking powder in a medium bowl.

Stir into banana mixture.

Beat egg whites to stiff peaks in a small bowl. Gradually beat in remaining sugar. Fold into batter.

Pour 1/3 of batter into prepared pan.

Cut a small hole in a plastic bag; spoon in melted chocolate. Swirl chocolate on top of batter.

Top with remaining batter.

Bake for 50 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool cake in pan on a wire rack.

Sprinkle cooled cake with confectioners’ sugar.

Contest Rules: 1. The cake baking contest will be held at county fair and cakes will be exhibited and judged at fair.

2. Contestant must be a resident of Morrow County 3. Each contestant must use the same recipe 4. Entries will be taken on Monday August 13th from 1:00pm-8:00pm 5. When you think of the word “bee,” what springs to mind?

by Richard Little If you said “sting,” “yellow and black” or “honey,” you are certainly not alone with your word associations, but you are 90 percent incorrect. Why? Because what most people associate with bees, only applies to social bees, such as honey and bumble bees. And those types of bees make up merely 10 percent of the world’s bee population.

Ninety percent of the world’s bees, an estimated 20,000 species, are solitary bees. This means that they live and work alone; they do not divide the labor like social bees. The female solitary bees are essentially “single moms” that find the housing, lay the eggs and provide for their young. The males live a short two weeks as adults and aren’t around to help. As for the “busy as a bee” saying, let’s give credit where credit is due: solitary female bees are the busiest.

The fact that solitary bees don’t have a worker bee on special assignment to defend the nest makes these bees very gentle, virtually stingless. Even if a person were to get stung, the sting is more like a mosquito bite and there are no known allergic reactions to these stings.

Solitary bees are also not just yellow and black. They exist in a rainbow of colors and sizes ranging from less than one-sixteenth of an inch to over an inch and a half.

Solitary bees do not make honey. But what they lack in honey-making skills, they make up for in pollination. Their pollination efficiency is 60-150 times better than honey bees.

Solitary bees’ anatomy sets them up to be amazing pollinators. They are generally hairy little critters and have a rather unsophisticated way of carrying pollen.

They basically belly flop onto blossoms and cover their abdomens with dry pollen. As they fly to the next flower, pollen scatters everywhere.

Pollinators are in peril and have been making headlines. Most of the discussion has been about the Honey Bee which accounts for less than 1 percent of the world’s bee population. Some solitary bees’ populations are declining rapidly too, but they are much harder to study because of their illusive nature.

We are beginning to realize that we need to think about the health of pollinators because much of our food supply largely relies on their pollination. Pro-

tecting pollinators is a common-sense form of self-preservation.

According to E.O. Wilson in “The Forgotten Pollinators,” Eighty percent of the species of our food plants worldwide, depend on pollination by animals, almost all of which are insects.

Mark Pratt is announcing he will be filing as a candidate for the position of Morrow County Sheriff, in the 2020 election.

Pratt said, “I am running for Sheriff to provide a new vision and direction for the Sheriff’s Office, which will provide improved services. I will work on building partnerships in or-

der to be more effective, as I firmly believe working in a collaborative environment is vital in order to provide quality service. I also plan on restructuring the current staff, which would allow 24-hour patrol service, and improved customer service.”

Pratt’s commitment to public safety began when he joined the Washington State Patrol Explorer Program as a teen. This program fostered his desire to pursue a career in law enforcement. Pratt has served as a Volunteer Firefighter/ EMT, Reserve Police Officer, Dispatcher, and Deputy Sheriff in Washington State, before moving to Morrow County. In 2000, Pratt began working as a Deputy Sheriff with the Morrow County Sheriff’s Office. In 2007, he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant. In 2016, he accepted a Sergeant’s position with the Boardman Police Department, where he continues to serve today.

Pratt currently possesses an Ex-

ecutive level law enforcement certification from the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standard and Training, which is the highest certification issued by DPSST. Pratt has served or is serving on the following boards/committees: Boardman City Council (ElectedPast) Morrow County School Board (Elected-Past) Port of Morrow Budget Committee (Appointed-Current) Umatilla Morrow Radio & Data District (Elected-Current) The election will be on November 3, 2020.

The recipients of the $750.00 scholarships were Nicole Phillips of Irrigon and Faith Cassidy Rosen of Boardman.

Myka Davis and Madison Bowman of Irrigon received $500.00. Brendy Avalos and Anthony Rodelo from Boardman also received $500.00.

orrow County Fair youth muffin contest Contest Rules: 1. The junior wheat league muffin baking contest will be held at county fair and muffins will be exhibited and judged at fair.

2. Contestant must be a resident of Morrow County 3. Each contestant must use the same recipe 4. Entries will be taken on Monday August 13th from 1:00pm8:00pm 5. Open to 7-13 years old 6. Please bring 3 muffins. 1 for tasting 2 for display 7. All muffins must be brought to fair on a paper plate 8. No substitutions, additions or deletions to the official recipe.

Spray bottoms of 2 1/2-inch muffin pan with non-stick cooking spray.

Beat egg until foamy in a small mixing bowl. Beat in oil and milk. In a separate bowl, sift together all dry ingredients.

Stir in blueberries. Make a well in the center and pour in liquid ingredients. Mix together with a fork until dry ingredients are moistened; no more than 25 to 30 strokes. Batter will be lumpy.

Using an ice-cream scoop, fill the cups in the muffin pan.

This will measure your batter equally for each muffin. Fill each muffin cup slightly more than half full. (Try to scoop only once

for each cup; muffins will be lighter.)

Bake 18 to 20 minutes or until golden brown and muffins test done with a toothpick. Loosen with spatula and turn out.

Best served warm.

TIP: For high altitudes, reduce baking powder or soda in the recipe by 1/4 teaspoon.

TIP: To keep muffins from burning around the edges, leave one muffin cup empty; fill with 2/3 cold water before baking.

The Boardman Pool and Recreation Center is a new indoor 43,000 square foot center complete with an Aerobics room, double Gymnasium, Weight and Cardio room, a large Climbing Wall and an Aquatics section.

The Aquatics area has features such as a large Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, Water Slide and a Vortex Pool that provides fun and resistant exercise for all.

Summer Recreation Programs over, but lots of fun memories to keep!

The Funtastic Kidz group lined up at the Rec Center for a photo of their last day -- 180 happy faces!

Boardman Park & Recreation District’s popular summer recreation programs: Funtastic Kidz for those ages 5 to 12 and Teen Summer Programs for those ages 12 to 17 have drawn to a close for this year. The five-week camps had plenty of activities: Funtastic Kidz had arts & crafts, fun on the inflatable slide and bouncey castle, tie dying Tshirts, making sandwich bag ice cream and a half day finale at the Recreation Center for swimming, rock wall climb-

ing and gym sports plus a bbq hot dog lunch with carrots, apples and milk.

The Teen Summer Program enjoyed frisbee golf, training to use kayaks and canoes, water safety, paint ball, lots of dodgeball, soccer and other active sports, and a special trip to Silverwood Theme Park before the final day with a pizza party, swimming and rock wall climbing at the Rec Center.

These programs are the envy of

many surrounding communities, who keep asking if they can bus their kids here to participate. Nope -Thank you Rec District taxpayers!
