Food on the Fry opens to public Someplace new to eat in Boardman opened February -- Food on the Fry, is a mobile food trailer, located each Thursday from Noon to 8:00 pm by Ordnance Brewery, Olson Rd., Boardman. They are scouting other Boardman locations and you can find them at Cinco de Mayo and other local events this summer.

Kaitlin and Josh Gustafson moved to Boardman in 2012 when Kaitlin accepted a teaching a job at Riverside Junior/Senior High School. Josh works as Paramedic for Morrow County Health District in Boardman. They have three children, Connor is 7, Mariel is 5 and Alaina is 1; you often can find the kids helping out in the food preparation! Kaitlin’s father, Jeff Violet, from Bend, is the owner of the mobile trailer, and the Gustafson’s appreciate his assistance in preparing food, helping train employees, and providing the trailer on a “rent-to-own” basis!

Food on the Fry prepares special french fries smothered in various toppings, such as “Stinky Fries” (Parmesan cheese and garlic); “Cow in the Garden” (grilled steak and veggies); Wings! (sweet or spicy); kids meals, cookies and soft drinks. They plan to use seasonal local ingredients for summer specials. They are passionate about helping the community and are donating 10% of a day’s proceeds to a local nonprofit organization.

Irrigon High School Drama Club presents “The Diary of Ann Frank”

Irrigon high school drama club rehearsing “The Diary of Ann Frank” which will be presented April 21st & 22nd.

By Melissa Dunn The “Diary of Ann Frank” will be presented in the cafeteria of the Irrigon Junior Senior High School April 21, 22 at 7 p.m. These are free performances by the Awesome Creative Theater (A.C.T.) group led by Linda Pedro and Melissa Dunn. The actors are high school students that have been working since January to create this bit of history for Irrigon audiences. The story relates the daily life of the Frank family while hiding from the

Nazi’s during the occupation of Denmark. They have taken in another family and a family friend in the attic apartment of the shop owned by Mr. Frank. Through Ann’s writings in a diary that was given to her by her father, the years long life of hiding in the attic comes alive with these talented young people in Irrigon.

Boardman appoints Budget Committee members At their March 7, 2017 City Council meeting, Councilors appointed Jr. Drago and Lisa Mittelsdorf to fill vacancies on the Boardman Budget Committee. This is a first appointment for both Mr. Drago and Ms. Mittelsdorf to a City of Boardman board. Mr. Drago will serve a threeyear term ending December 31, 2019 and Ms. Mittelsdorf filled a vacancy with a term ending December 31, 2017.

Councilors also reappointed Ray Michael to the Boardman Budget Committee. Mr. Michael has a long history of service to the City of Boardman, having previously served on the City Council, Planning Commission and Budget Committee. He will serve another three-year term ending December 31, 2019.

The Budget Committee is comprised of the Boardman City Council and seven members of the community appointed by the City Council. The Committee holds one or more meetings each May to review and make recommendations to the City Council for the City’s budget and the Urban Renewal Districts’ Budget.

The next meeting of the Boardman Budget Committee will be on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 7pm at Boardman City Hall.

Boardman to sponsor spring clean up The City of Boardman will sponsor a community-wide clean-up the month of April. The City has garbage vouchers available, with a fifty dollar limit, to residents of the City of Boardman. The vouchers are valid during the month of April at Finley Butte Landfill and the North Morrow Transfer Station. The garbage voucher program encourages citizens to clean up their residences by disposing of yard debris. City residents may pick up their vouchers at Boardman City Hall at 200 City Center Circle beginning March 31st . For more information on this program, call Boardman City Hall at 481-9252.

BMCC News: Our new “digs” are open for spring term!

The new Blue Mountain Community College Workforce Training Center is open for business as of April 3, 2017. Spring term classes are being held at the new facility.

Although some traces of being a work site still remain and a few kinks are being worked out, the public is welcome to stop in and take a look. The building is staffed from 10 am to 8 pm Monday through Thursday and 10 am to 5 pm on Friday. The phone number remains the same at 541-481-2099.

Several classes of note are on the schedule for April. D2000 Safety will present Fall Protection, Train the Trainer on April 25 & 26 at the WTC. This class happens in Boardman yearly. Call BMCC at 541-481-2099 or register directly with D2000 at D2000safety.com.

BMCC and the Northwest Food Processor’s Association have teamed up to offer three classes in April. Supervisory Skills Part II is now set for April 10 from noon to 4

pm. An OSHA workshop covering Rules, Regulations and the Big Inspection is set for April 26 from 8 am to noon and SQF Edition 8 will be held April 27 & 28 from 8 am to 5 pm each day.

And remember, it is not too late to get signed up for Zumba or Strength/Circuit Training. Zumba will be two days a week, Monday and Wednesday from 4:15-5:15 pm at Sam Boardman Elementary and Strength/Circuit Training is set for Tuesday and Thursday from 5:306:30 pm at Riverside High School.

Even though BMCC has changed locations, the same services are still offered at the new spot. Testing, Business Office service, placement testing, and advising are all still available. Stop by and see us.

An Open House is tentatively planned at the Workforce Training Center on Thursday, April 27. Details will be available later and on the BMCC webpage at www.bluecc.edu.

PENDLETON, Ore. – Country music superstar Gary Allan will kick off the Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon week when he takes the stage in the Happy Canyon Arena on Sept. 9. Tickets go on sale Monday, May 1.

Celebrate National Arbor Day with ten free shade trees by joining the Arbor Day Foundation National Arbor Day is Friday, April 28, this year, and the Arbor Day Foundation is making it easy for anyone to celebrate the annual tree-planting holiday. Recreation Center hiring staff, planning programs while construction team completes the building, pools.

The countdown through the final weeks of construction have begun for Boardman Park & Recreation District on the Boardman Pool & Recreation Center. The Park plans a July 1st Grand Opening of the long awaited center, which includes three pools: Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, and Vortex Recreation Pool; double basketball court sized gymnasium; Aerobics Room; Weights/Cardio Room; 38-foot wide by 27-foot tall Rock Climbing Wall; Multi-Purpose Room plus locker rooms.

The staff is concentrating on developing programs for the new facility as new staff is interviewed and brought on board. Instructors are still needed for specialized classes. A partial list of programs available are featured below.

Water Walking: Whether you’re young, old, in shape or out of shape, you can experience the pleasures and benefits of water exercise. Providing freedom and strength of movement in many ranges of motion, water exercise enables participants to walk further and hold an object longer. This will lead to greater success in daily activities and increased enjoyment from leisure time.

Go Swimming With Mommy and Me! It’s never to early to start swim classes for your child. Most swim classes start off as Mommy and Me Classes, where you get your child used to the water and make them feel safe. It’s important

to keep in mind that teaching your child to swim is a long-term process. It involves a balance of motivation, skill and fun -- so the sooner you start, the better! Babies as young as 8 weeks old can enjoy the water with you, while solo lessons typically start by age three.

Indoor Kinder Kickers! This coed class is a great way to build soccer and social skills while being in a fun, noncompetitive setting. Ages 5 - 7.

Circuit Training: This session will focus on different parts of the body including: * Upper body - This includes all muscles in the arms, shoulders and upper back. * Core & trunk - The core muscles are essential, not just in achieving a toned stomach, but also to your balance. * Lower body - The muscles targeted in this section include the glutes, hamstrings, quads and calves.

RHS Key Club hosts Division 80 Rally at the SAGE Center March 4th, 67 Key Club members took over the SAGE Center for the first Annual Division 80 Key Club Rally. This gathering was the result of a vision Kiwanis Club Member Debbie Radie had to hold a leadership development day between the Kiwanis and Key Clubs.

Key Clubs came from Boardman, Irrigon, Umatilla, Hermiston, Helix, and Milton Freewater, along with Kiwanis members and community volunteers who helped supervise the event. Key Club members are the leaders of tomorrow, and they’re the energetic, dedicated teens of today. Key Club is the largest and oldest service organization for teens. There are more than 5,000 Key Clubs around the world. In each of those clubs, members work together to improve their schools and their communities. Their service also increases the visibility -and enhances the reputation of both the club and school they rep-

resent. Key Clubs are sponsored by the Kiwanis Club.

The morning started with registration where everyone was given a Key Club Rally t-shirt and a packet with the day’s events.

Everyone gathered for the welcoming and then enjoyed a scavenger hunt to break the ice and allowed the students to get acquainted. The scavenger hunt forms were turned in to be drawn for prizes at the end of the day. The grand prize of a Kindle Fire went to Neira Rodriguez.

The purpose of the gathering was to introduce the various members of Division 80, and teach the students about team building, leadership development and service.

Guest Speaker Brandon Spangler of Walla Walla spoke to the group about the importance of overcoming fear and focusing for a quality life. “Pay it forward” to change a person’s life for the better was also a theme he empha-

sized.

Four “breakout” sessions were presented throughout the day.

Anna Brown spoke about Team Building; Rhonda Brennan talked about Service (Pay it forward); Isaac Estrada talked about Leadership Development and Joe Taylor presented a Kiwanis Club project on SIGN (Surgical Implant Generation Networking) which is a nonprofit medical intervention in 3rd world countries for repair of broken bones.

Donations for the Rally came from: Mt. Valley Land Co., Lisa Mittlesdorf, Banner Bank, Bank of Eastern Oregon, SAGE Center, Boardman Foods, Boardman Chamber of Commerce, Jim Young, KRP Management, SunRise at Boardman, Neal Development.

Irrigon/Boardman Key Clubs worked together to make the Division 80 Rally a huge success.

Key Clubbers brainstorm during a Team Building excersise, the object of the excersise was to work together standing on the tarp and turn it over without stepping off. The teams all performed this excersise together without any mishaps.

Irrigon Key Club President and Division 80 President Bruno Salas presented Neira Rodriguez with the top prize, a Kindle Fire.

Here’s just a little information about Susan Rice in her own words. I am a comic whose career has spanned 33years. I have performed on Stage in everything from Shakespeare to Improve. I started my stand up career in 1983 when I needed a change. My time riding the bus and annoying people with my humorous observations turned into material and from there I began my life as a Stand up Comic. Comedy has given me a forum to be (although briefly) part of my audiences life. I always remind people of someone they love.

It’s a great feeling! My comedy friends use to say I was the most huggable comic in the business because after my shows everyone wanted a hug. It was weird and yet nice.

I lived in LA for 14 years and performed all over the country and on cruise ships, as well as cable and national television. I have worked in the worse possible conditions to the grandest of theaters.

I consider myself so very lucky to have come up in an era where standup comedy was being defined as an American Art Form. I truly love what I do.

Boardman Park enjoyed seven members of the Blue Mt. Good Sams Club during the middle of March. The Good Sam Club adopted Boardman Marina & RV Park and helps with the spring cleaning each year. The work consisted of mowing (the first time this year) raking leaves, seed pods and tree branches. All the campsites were a mess from the long winter and much of the leaves were buried in snow and needed swept up. Gene VanGorder, Maintenance Supervisor said that without the Blue Mt. Good Sams here to help us, it would have taken another two months of steady work by the staff to clean up. The Good Sams did it all in one day! The Park staff treated the Good Sams to a well-deserved lunch. Thanks for all your hard work!

Pendleton Round-Up announces selection of 2017 Poster Artist The Pendleton Round-Up is pleased to announce the selection acclaimed western artist Buckeye Blake as the 2017 poster artist.

Buckeye is an important figure in the contemporary western art world, noted for combining traditional and contemporary styles in his dramatic, colorful paintings of western themes. An art critic reviewing his work observed, “Buckeye Blake is an artist whose experience as a working cowboy gave him firsthand knowledge of western subjects. His paintings exhibit a fanciful, graphic style mixed with a taste for pop culture interpretations of western figures especially cowboy and cowgirl iconography.

He approaches traditional themes with humor, a strong sense of design, and a sunny palette, all of which gives his work a lighthearted flavor”.

As a child, Buckeye moved around the west following his father on the rodeo circuit and working on ranches, including a stop in Buckeye, Arizona where he picked up his nick name. Buckeye’s experience as a working cowboy was tempered by the influence of his mother, an artist who created murals and painted portraits to supplement the family income. After a stint as a scene painter in Hollywood, Buckeye returned to his love of showing cutting horses and creating fine art; setting up a studio in Augusta, Montana for many years before relocating to Weatherford, Texas.

Buckeye’s work is featured in many important collections including the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, the Denver Art Museum, the 3M Mu-

City sponsors city Experiential exhibit to transform wide clean up Feves Gallery April 6-May 4

The City of Boardman will sponsor a community-wide clean-up the month of April. The City has garbage vouchers available, with a fifty dollar limit, to residents of the City of Boardman. The vouchers are valid during the month of April at Finley Butte Landfill and the North Morrow Transfer Station.

The garbage voucher program encourages citizens to clean up their residences by disposing of yard debris. City residents may pick up their vouchers at Boardman City Hall at 200 City Center Circle beginning March 31st. For more information on this program, call Boardman City Hall at 481-9252.

Regular hours will continue through the fall. The Pendleton Round-Up and Happy Canyon Hall of Fame was founded in 1969. Exhibits range from a full-sized Teepee to delicate beadwork, the exhibits in the Hall of Fame cover a wide range of subjects and span the nearly 100 years of Round-Up and Happy Canyon history.

New exhibits are brought in each year. Opening this spring will be the Til Taylor exhibit, which will cover both his Round-Up involvement and also his career at Sheriff, the Lawrence Taylor exhibit, 2017 Hall of Fame Inductees (to be announced in May), and the 2017 Grand Marshall exhibit (to be announced in March). New exhibits in 2016 were the Happy Canyon Centennial exhibit, the Jackson Sundown exhibit, 2016 Hall of Fame Inductees (J.D. Yates, Doug and Heather Corey, Bill Burke, and Smokey, the horse), 2016 Grand Marshall, Rusty Black and Chinook, and the Bishop Family and the Pendleton Woolen Mills involvement.

Letters to the Editor Mark Rouska Obituary Mark Rouska, 52, passed away after a long battle with Kidney Cancer.

He was born in Aberdeen, Washington to James and Maxine Rouska on Sept 19, 1964. Mark enjoyed life surrounded by his siblings: Celeste Johnson-Maret, Les Rouska, Ted Rouska, Lonnie Rouska, Nicole Wyscaver and their spouses. Mark enjoyed fishing, sports, and his spending time with family.

Mark graduated from Condon High School and then continued his education. Through years of study he earned a Master’s in Education and a Master’s in Business Administration.

Mark found his calling working with youth at the Boy’s and Girl’s Club of Salem. Later he entered the field of education teaching social sciences and special education in Morrow County School District. Mark felt that all of his students deserved his time and respect.

He was a compassionate educator who was well known for his sense of humor inside and outside of the classroom.

Mark is survived by his wife of 31 years, Patrice, and his children Aaron, Kristine and her husband Adrian, along with his surrogate children Richard Hernandez, Leo Reinelt, Ivo Steinbrecher, and Golf. He was an honorable man, well loved by family and friends.

Boardman Park and Recreation is looking to contract with certified instructors to teach classes at the Pool and Recreation Center. The Boardman Community Pool and Recreation Center is a new indoor 43,000 square foot center complete with an Aerobics room, double Gymnasium, Weight and Cardio room, a large Climbing Wall and an Aquatics section. The Aquatics area has features such as a large Therapy Pool, Lap Pool, Water Slide and a Vortex Pool that provides fun and resistant exercise for all.

The Boardman Park and Recreation District will host a grand opening at the new center on July 1st. We are looking to start classes the following week, and we need instructors to teach the following classes for adults, youth and seniors.

Riverside students thanked by Oregon State Police Superintendent

Riverside High school students participated in the “Exploration of Law Enforcement” with Travis Hampton, Superintendent of the Oregon State Police.

Boardman, OR — On Monday, March 13, the students in the “Exploration of Law Enforcement” class at Riverside Jr/Sr High School received a special visit from Travis Hampton, Superintendent of the Oregon State Police. Hampton came to personally thank the high school students for the time and input they have given to the SafeOregon project, a new statewide safety tip line for all schools.

The 15 students in the class have been involved with SafeOregon for several months, offering feedback about the name of the tip line, the website colors and functions and how they think students can promote it in their schools.

“I want to commend you all for a job well done on a statewide effort. You have been engaged in something in your young lives that has already made a difference for students, and that’s great,” said

Hampton. Oregon State Police is giving the students T-shirts and water bottles, plus a donation of $250 from the Oregon State Police Officers’ Association.

Dirk Dirksen, Morrow County School District Superintendent, was also in attendance and thanked the students. “On behalf of the school district, thank you for making an effort in our county to help SafeOregon become a reality. I also applaud Officer Shimer for taking the lead with this class,” Dirksen said. George Shimer is the Safety Resource Officer for MCSD’s schools in Boardman.

SafeOregon is available to all public K-12 schools in Oregon at no cost and is a way for students, staff or other members of the public to anonymously report and share confidential information of a threat or a potential threat to student safety. For more information, visit safeoregon.com.

Old Time Fiddlers to perform in Irrigon Get ready for toe-tapping fun on April 29th in Irrigon! The Blue Mountain Old Time Fiddlers will play for you at Stokes Landing Senior Center at 6:00 pm. Dinner starts at 5:00 and can be purchased for a small fee.

Fiddling is a style of music rather than an instrument itself. Fiddlers do not use music while they perform, but play by ear. Fiddlers often take liberty with a tune, adding extra notes for their own style and interpretation of a tune.

This technique adds to the excitement of the evening because you never know what the fiddlers are up to next!

Mark your calendars for April 29th. Admission fee is $5.00 with dinner available for purchase. Everyone is welcome to come out and enjoy an evening of music and toe-tapping fun!
