Boardman Coal Plant shuts down

Boardman Soul

The time has come to pull my plug, my halls and stairways empty. I’ve breathed my last and did my job, albeit,…. 20 years too early. Buzzing lights are what remains of sounds to be turned out. My decks once echoed all the noise,…. from workers fervent shouts. No sounds of impacts, drills and hammers,…. crane ops,…. hand tools or distant chatter. A mighty power resounded in me, to make megawatts, five hundred fifty. The railcars idle and tracks now rusted, Machinery still,…. that coal once dusted. No steam to turn the turbine rotors, No power to make,…. to turn my motors. Life blood drained and all’s at rest, I did my time and passed the test. My waters still, no steam to make, To be dismantled and left with a lake. This life has ended, but my memories remain, You held your head high, when the end finally came.

Boardman renews development incentives, issues General Obligation Bonds In an effort to encourage new construction in Boardman, at their March 2, 2021 meeting, the Boardman City Council passed a resolution to temporarily waive water and sewer system development (SDC’s). The resolution waives the water and sewer System Development Charges (SDC’s) on a sliding scaled based upon the number of Equivalent Dwelling Units built. The waivers are for a twelve-month period beginning January 1, 2021 and runs through December 31, 2021. All property owners or developers of residential or commercial property within the City limits are eligible for the waivers. This incentive was first passed in 2011 for residential customers only, and since then the Council has passed a resolution each year approving the waiver of SDC’s for all construction within the residential or commercial districts. The council also passed a resolution to increase the fees for water and sewer SDC’s, the first increase since its inception in 2000. In other city business, the council passed a resolution authorizing the issuance and sale of General Obligation and Refunding Bonds in the amount of $20,320,000 that was passed by the voters in May 2020. David Ulbricht, Special Districts Associate of Oregon Advisory Services Director gave a presentation and was available for questions in regard to the General Obligation Bond sale. The bond will provide funds for purchase of property and improvements to the city’s water and wastewater facilities, including a 13-acre wastewater lagoon, a water booster pump station, an approximately one-million-gallon water reservoir, a new water collector well, constructing wastewater lift stations, acquiring land, refinancing outstanding debt, and paying costs of issuance of the bonds. The next Boardman City Council meeting will be Tuesday, April 6, 2021 at 7:00pm at Boardman City Hall.

They have been able to provide housing assistance and utility assistance to many Irrigon and Boardman families in need. If a family wonders if they qualify for assistance, the best thing to do is visit the Center; they are open Tuesdays 9-12 & 1-3. You can also call, 541/;9224563. IBEAC cannot share anything funded by Capeco, however they can share from private donations to the Boardman Pantry. The Boardman Pantry also shares with IBEAC when they have excess goods. That way both cities are covered. The goal of IBEAC is to provide food for a family for 5-7 days; this includes, meat, dairy, cereal, pasta, fruit canned frozen and fresh when in season, vegetables canned, frozen and fresh when in season also. Program details: A person (family) must come in and make initial contact with the facility, get set up as a client, and provide proof of resi-

dency, such as a rent receipt or electric bill that is in their name, showing they live at an address in either Irrigon or Boardman. Once the person (family) is established as a client, it can be determined if and how IBEAC can help them with food, rent, and utilities. IBEAC helps families with food on a monthly basis, sometimes if they are between jobs or some extenuating circumstances, they can offer food more than once a month. Help is available with utilities and rent up to a certain/ dollar amount, once every 18 months. The dollar amount a person (family) receives will be determined after their account is set up and they have spoken in person and contacted either the rental manager, or utility company. The money will always be mailed to the provider, IBEAC does not give clients funds. The client needs to be able to communicate in English or bring a translator with them. IBEAC hours are Tuesday 912 & 1-3. Messages can be left by phone after hours, it is monitored daily, although the calls may not be returned until the following Tuesday.

Port of Morrow and BMCC partner to bring forklift training to region BOARDMAN, OR – The Port of Morrow and Blue Mountain Community College have partnered to purchase a forklift simulator and begin offering training. There is a high demand for skilled forklift operators both at the Port of Morrow and regionally. “The Port is excited to be partnering with BMCC on this exciting new equipment to help train and continue to develop the workforce within the Port. This is a great way to engage employers and provide a benefit that many industries in the Port will be able to utilize,” says Ryan Neal, executive director of the Port of Morrow. The collaborative project will provide a safe training program for both job seekers and incumbent workers who want to build additional skills. “I am looking forward to offering our local industries a unique and much-needed training opportunity with the forklift simulator,” says Anne

Morter, workforce training center director for Blue Mountain Community College. “We often hear that employers not only want employees with forklift driving skills but would also like training to improve those skills. The simulator will offer a great local opportunity for forklift operators to gain skill and confidence in a low-risk setting.” The Sit-Down CB Forklift Simulator provides a realistic virtual reality environment with OEM Hyster or Yale forklift controls. This configuration immerses learners in lifelike scenarios under safe and controlled conditions and without the potential liabilities or damages that could occur during onsite training, especially with first-time operators. The simulator will be ready for training by mid-April. For more information people can call the BMCC Workforce Training Center (541) 481-2099 or email amorter@bluecc.edu.

Dancing Bee Acres of Irrigon offers local, all natural products for sale

Bee beards on hives from last summer at Dancing Bee Acres in Irrigon. Ina and Dan Abercrombie own a couple of acres in Irrigon. Ina is an Apitherapist, a person who utilizes alternative medicine that uses honey bee products, including honey, pollen, propolis, royal jelly and bee venom for health reasons. Proponents of apitherapy make claims for its health benefits. She also is a bee keeper. She built a website for another Apitherapist and bee keeper, Karen Gifford of Stanfield and became interested in bees and all that goes with them. Karen Gifford passed away, and in 2003 Ina purchased that business from the family. While husband Dan is not a beekeeper, he assists Ina in a lot of the heavy lifting. She has a small shop at her farm at 198 W. Wyoming Avenue in Irrigon, where by appointment only, you can view

all her products and visit about bees. Dancing Bee Acres, LLC sells Raw Honey, Royal Jelly, Bee Pollen, Propolis, Bee Venom, Bees Wax, Bees Wax Candles, soap, hand cream, facial products and Honey Gift Baskets. Ina also sells her products at Columbia River Gifts and Goodies located at 202 N Main Street, Suite 1, Boardman. All of Ina’s bee colonies are presently located at her farm, but she is adding to her colonies and plans to build her business. “We have our own network of beekeepers in Irrigon, and we are coordinating treatment for the varroa mite, which has devastated bee colonies. We work with the bee overall health to improve our colonies,” Ina says. “I also work with MidColumbia Beekeepers Association in the TriCities,” she added. “If anyone is interested in becoming a beekeeper or wants to learn more about bees, contact me at 541/571-3250.”

In 2019, the Round-Up had a payout in excess of $500,000. The Xtreme Bulls Tour Finale will air exclusively on The Cowboy Channel and will stream live on the PRCA on Cowboy Channel Plus App.
