The Farmer’s Cup the newest spot to grab a cup of java What does one do after retirement? If you are Terry and Cheryl Tallman, you start a new business! After moving to Boardman in 1978, Terry, his brother Tim and father KeithTallman farmed in the area. Cheryl, a registered nurse, worked for 24 years for Morrow County Health District, mainly in the Boardman area. They purchased their farm, now consisting of 25 acres on the outskirts of Boardman on Laurel Lane. Terry eventually farmed part-time while he spent 18 years as a Morrow County Commissioner (“The Judge”). Their farming was mainly vegetables and the most beautiful and unusual flowers in the area. They sold their flowers and veggies at their farm and at various farmer’s markets. “We’d been thinking about developing a spot here to sell coffee and the produce we grow,” said Terry. “We talked about it for quite a while.” After retirement, they were in Yuma visiting with friends, who were enthusiastic about the dream of a new business. “We’ve talked to other coffee house owners, spent time working with them, talked to plumbers, electricians, the county planner, coffee bean purveyors, and just about everyone you could imagine,” added Terry. They developed a plan with their son, Jonathon, who also wanted to be involved. “His expertise in social media, retail and general business helped us set margins and develop a business plan,” Cheryl added. They ordered a prebuilt structure from Hickory Sheds in January of this year, and spent a few weeks on the hookups to water, septic and electricity, meanwhile decorating the interior to their theme. Although a grand opening is schedule sometime in the near future, they are in the “soft opening” stage, so they are open for business! Their coffee beans come from Middle Fork Roasters, a young company in the Seattle area the Tallmans

met and tweeked the grind to their liking. They carry three coffee blends, Full City Espresso, Matt’s Breakaway Blend, and Tough As Nails. One pound bags of either ground or whole coffee beans are available for $15 per bag. Their beans are freshly roasted, and they get regular deliveries of fresh beans. The Farmer’s Cup menu includes the usual assortment of coffee drinks, Italian sodas, Blendeds (similar to a smoothy) plus their specialty “Sunshine Sandwiches” with egg, Canadian bacon and cheese on their marble bread. They also carry by the slice cake and bread in the Marble, Chocolate Banana, Lemon Citrus, Vanilla Pound Cake and Cheryl’s delicious homemade fresh

vanilla and chocolate chip cookies. When their farm begins producing their famous strawberries and other produce, you’ll find it at Farmer’s Cup. Meanwhile, they carry organic fresh eggs at $6 per dozen. “Our chickens couldn’t keep up with the demand,” says Cheryl. “So we get some of our organic eggs from Neifer’s Farm.” They continue to “tweek” their menu, and they plan to carry homemade lemonade flavored with fresh raspberries and blueberries in season. A drive-through window makes for a quick order process, but they have tables and chairs inside if you have time for a visit -- Terry’s father Keith spends quite a bit of time there and is their biggest booster!

Farmer’s Cup is open Monday through Friday 4:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Saturday 6:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm and closed Sunday. You can call ahead for an order at 541/514-1601, or they will deliver in the Boardman area for an order of $30 or more with a $5 delivery fee.
