After 34 years, Boardman residents will have to become accustomed to seeing a new pair of friendly owners at Boardman Hardware. Ray and Carol Michael announced that Maria and David Richards have purchased the store and have taken over the business. The Richards moved to Boardman in 1982. David has worked at PGE Coal Fired Plant for 11 years as an electrician, and Maria is retiring October 15th after 31 years at Con-Agra to take over as Manager/Owner of Boardman Hardware. “The opportunity was there, and we didn’t want the store to leave town, so we decided in February to purchase the store,” says David.
“We’ve retained all the employees, so they are training us!” added David. Pam Fisher has worked at Boardman Hardware (previously Boardman Pharmacy & Hardware) for 11 years; Diana Wilson for 10 years, Pat Andreason and Curtis Darrow have each worked there for 4 years, and Mayra Barrera has worked there for 3 years while she takes classes at Blue Mt. Community College part-time. The Richards met while they each worked at Simplot in Hermiston, and were married in 1980. Their children are Richard Rockwell, Bryon Richards and Emerald Lantis. The Richards plan to make a few changes at Boardman Hardware. They want to add some lumber for those weekend projects and develop a Made in America section of goods. They will continue to carry the thousands
of items that have been available to Boardman residents, such as paint, plumbing supplies, keys, irrigation supplies, over-the-counter drugs, hair and nail supplies, school goods, greeting cards, knives and hunting & fishing supplies, HVAC filters, insulation, Boardman items, and many tourist items. They also will continue with the state liquor store and Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife licensing. The Richards with to thank Bank of Eastern Oregon and Morrow Development Corporation for helping put together their financial package for the purchase. Boardman Hardware is open Monday through Saturday, 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
