February 10, 2017 marked the recognizing many of the reasons Boardman is so great. Boardman Chamber of Commerce Annual Awards banquet was an evening of festivities. Attendees enjoyed a flavorful Greek themed meal catered by Paradise Rose Chuckwagon and bar hosted by Smiley’s Happy Place. The focus of the evening recognized several of our Boardman residents for what they have brought and done for our town. Boardman’s award recipients for 2016 are: Business Person of the Year: Karen Purcell. Karen Purcell is the owner of The Sunrise at Boardman Café. Karen has lived in Boardman her entire life and her generosity towards her community and continuous involvement shows her commitment to Boardman. Educator of the Year: Riverside Jr/ Sr High School Music teacher, Mr. Collin Dunlap received nominations from both co-workers and students. His enthusiasm and focus of the arts has built a strong interest within the students as well as their families. Youth of the Year: Selene Andrade of Riverside Jr/Sr High School. Her dedication to her sports, academics, and community projects are inspiring to all that know her. She is a great example of someone who can turn a negative into a positive. Her enthusiasm, great attitude and dedication makes her a role model for others. Citizen of the Year: Stan Toms. Mr. Toms also known as “Stan the man” is the person to call when our Senior Citizens are in need. Mr. Toms is always ready to transport our Senior Citizens to scheduled doctor’s appointments or daily errands if needed. His willingness to transport our Senior Citizens may be a small jaunt or an all-day excursion, but they can always count on him. Mr. Tom’s involvement in Boardman is substantial throughout the years in Boardman and beyond the thank you’s that can be said.

Fire & Safety Award: Boardman Rural Fire Protection District, Fire Fighter Adam Cole. Adam’s dedication to the community of Boardman keeps Adam a busy man. His Fire Safety position introduces our youth to the dangers of fire and the correct actions each child should take in an emergency in addition to his extracurricular activities with his comrades, such as the Iron Man Triathlons, Adam is involved in several community events and youth sports. This year’s event had a few additional recognitions, normally not presented. These special awards are just an extra boost of how great our community is. The Chamber also recognized Linda Toms. Linda closed her business doors “The Mouse Factory” after 30 years of business in Boardman. The success of her long-term business was not only due to good business choices but her commitment and involvement in our town. Linda and her family not only supported so many groups, school activities and events but cares for Boardman. Boardman Chamber of Commerce and the City of Boardman also had the opportunity to recognize a couple of additional residents of Boardman this year. Nicholas Richardson and Adolfo Martinez were presented with “Life Saving” awards. These young men alerted two families, residing in a duplex, that their homes were on fire and their families were in danger. Due to their quick actions both families, both with infants, could evacuate their residences safely and without injury. On a side note, this was the first year that a Pioneer recipient was not nominated. This is alarming and concerning. Boardman continues to have many residents that have lived in Boardman for 40+ years. Boardman would not be here without the commitment of these residents and their families. I encourage EVERYONE in Boardman to take a moment and
