SAGE Center opens doors to public Over 2,500 people have toured the SAGE Center in Boardman in a little over a week! A Tuesday night preview for the construction workers brought nearly 100 people; the following evening over 150 people who assisted with the filming of the Morrow County video toured the facility; the dedication and ribbon cutting ceremony Friday, May 31st brought 400 people (by invitation only); June 1st (Saturday) brought 637 people and Sunday 616 people for the free weekend introduction to the public. Three groups of schools have toured 550 Kindergarten to high school students. At the Dedication and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony, Riley Bushue from Congressman Walden’s office spoke, Kathleen Cathey with U. S. Senator Wyden’s office spoke as well as Oregon State Senator Bill Hansell and State of Oregon Representative Greg Smith. The Port of Morrow Commissioners: Jerry Healy, Marv Padberg, Joe Taylor, Don Russell and Larry Lindsey were thanked by Port of Morrow Manager Gary Neal for their vision and support for the SAGE Center. The interactive displays brings lots of “ooohs and aaaahs” while the simulated hot air balloon ride and tractor are favorites of the youngsters. The Store carries thousands of

Riverside baseball field dedicated to long-time coach Jim Harper Jim Harper was an admired teacher, athletic director and longtime baseball coach for 32 years. Jim came to Riverside High School in the fall of 1961 after a 10 year stint of teaching & coaching at Adrian, Oregon. Boardman, at that time, had a population of 150 residents and the average class size at RHS was 20 students. He taught general & advanced math classes, physical education & later added driver’s education. His duties of an athletic director were performed during his prep period. From 1962 to 1968, Jim coached baseball on the old field which is now located under the Boardman marina. Jim would drag the field, chalk the lines, arrange for umpires, drive the team bus to away games & then spent weekends in the locker room washing, drying & folding the shower towels. When the current field was being built, Coach Harper’s knowledge of baseball details was instrumental in working with the architects right down to arranging the field to coincide with sun positioning. He continued coaching on this
field for many more years before retiring from teaching in 1984. Jim was an extremely patient person whether explaining math concepts to a struggling student, teaching driver ed students to drive on icy roads, or expressing positive comments to a player who just struck out with bases loaded. It seemed Jim could never say “no” as he always was willing to support whatever seemed to be going on in education whether in academics or athletics. Besides his teaching and baseball duties at Riverside, Coach Harper assisted with football and basketball programs both at the high school and junior high levels. He was widely known throughout the region for his longtime work as an official in football and basketball. Jim was also an icon in the community being an active member of the Lions club, Dewey West bowling team, Willow Run golf course and the Boardman Senior Center. Jim passed away this past summer a month before his 91st birth-
day. His dedication to Riverside High School had a tremendous impact on hundreds of students, their

This recently formed group has made quite an impact on the local music scene with performances scheduled in both public and private venues. Calling all Morrow County Cultural, Arts, Historic and Literary organizations! Each year the Morrow County Cultural Coalition receives funding from Oregon’s Cultural Trust to support culture and the arts in Morrow County. It is time for your qualifying organization to start preparing a Funding Proposal Request Form to take advantage of our available funds. Qualifying groups or projects might fall under any of these categories; literary, historical preservation, visual and performing arts, or humanities and cultural organizations. We invite you to submit completed Funding Proposal Request Forms to Morrow County Cultural Coalition by August 1, 2013. Proposed
projects must include a timeline and be completed by July 30, 2014. Organizations need not have IRS tax-exempt status to apply. Project proposals must meet criteria noted on the Morrow County application. Funding awarded will vary in amount according to the needs of the proposed project and the amount of county funds awarded by the Oregon Cultural Trust. Grants are awarded for no more than 50% of the total project cost. Proposals funded in 2012 included: North Morrow Community Foundation, Windy River Elementary School Writing Festival , Boardman

CTUIR Public Transit is the regional transit provider in Northeastern Oregon / Southeastern Oregon with regular daily service. It is an integral part of the CTUIR economic development program by providing workforce access to community employment sites in the service area. Starting July 1, 2013 regular daily service is being provided to Umatilla and Irrigon at the request of those cities. These service destinations provide realistic opportunity to connect other communities in Morrow County to the regional network. Jim Beard, CTUIR Planning Director, will provide at a conceptual level, how Morrow County and its cities can make these transit services available to citizens of the County. The presentation will talk about the potential financial, management and logistical elements of providing these services to Morrow County and its cities. Irrigon students succeed at Oregon Science Olympiad competition IRRIGON – Several Irrigon JrSr High School students had the opportunity to participate in the 2013 Oregon Science Olympiad at Western Oregon University in Monmouth on April 13. The Oregon Science Olympiad program provides a highly motivating mix of collaboration and competition, centered around science and engineering for middle and high school students. Students compete in events with topics such as human anatomy and physiology, diseases, forensics, robotics and chemistry. Irrigon Jr-Sr High School had
both a middle and high school level team participate at this year’s Olympiad. The middle school team consisted of Ethan Greer, Kayden Kendrick, Keegan Krogh, Bruno Salas-Garcia and Sierra Spaur. The high school team consisted of Bowen Byers, Emily Ellis, Caitlin Hearn, Kaitlynn Linnell, Aaron Long, Hannah Meyers, Rafael Salas-Garcia, Morgan Smith, Nakayla Williamson, and Jennifer Working. These students prepared for the competition for much of the school year, devoting their limited extracurricular time to increasing their
knowledge and skills related to science. High schoolers Bowen Byers and Hannah Myers showed off their teamwork in the robot arm building event, in which they took home 3rd place. Molly Matz, who coached the high school team, said she’s hopeful next year’s team will include even more students. “Congratulations to all of the students who participated,” she said. “Your enthusiasm and hard work is admired and appreciated. More students are encouraged to join us for next year’s competition.”

chasing 4 chairs in a rambunctious game of “Musical Chairs.” Seven students took part in an improvised masked performance of “Noses and the Sloth,” coached by an IMAGO actor. IMAGO Theater is an international performing group based in Portland, OR. After the four performances in Irrigon and Boardman,
the IMAGO troop headed north for performances in Edmonton, Alberta Canada. IMAGO Assemblies were made possible by individual and organization donations to North Morrow Community Foundation and funding support from Morrow County Unified Recreation District and Morrow County Cultural Coalition.
BMCC Summer News Blue Mountain Community College has a new admission process for new students or those that have been away more than two years. The goal of the new process is to identify new students and funnel them through an orientation process that will acquaint them with the systems of BMCC and hopefully, increase their chance of educational success. The process is as follows: New students must submit an Application for Admission form and submit a $25 non-refundable application fee at the time of application. Applications will not be processed without the fee. The application DEADLINE is the Friday at 5pm two weeks prior to the beginning of the term. Applications are available online at www.bluecc.edu, go to STUDENTS along the top of the page then scroll down to “Forms for Students”, then click on “Admission Application Form” or the form can be requested by visiting any BMCC location. Submit com-
pleted forms to any BMCC location or by mail to BMCC, PO Box 100, Pendleton, OR 97801. Once the application is received, the student will receive a letter from the Admissions Department outlining their next steps. In a nutshell, the steps include (in this order) a) take the placement exams (which can be done at BMCC Boardman); b) attend a New Student Orientation; c) Be advised and d) register for classes. Three orientation sessions will be held at BMCC Boardman through the summer. The information from the college will be delivered via Blackboard Collaborate followed by Q & A and advising from the on site staff. Orientation dates are Tuesday, June 18, Monday September 9 and Monday, September 16. Students must complete the admission process to be assigned to an orientation session. It is also required that students take their placement tests before the session.

Boardman Park District’s summer recreation program begins June 17 Free activities include mornings for ages 5-12 and Teen Program from 1-4 pm. Swim lessons are being set up with Movies in the Park to begin June 21 and continue each Friday evening throughout the summer. and create many arts and crafts projects. CORVALLIS, Ore. – An estimated 5,267 students will receive degrees this spring from Oregon State University, which will hold its 144th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 15, at Reser Stadium on campus. Bentz, who advises President Obama on national security issues. She is director of strategic capabilities policy on the National Security Staff and
a 1986 graduate of OSU, where she received an ROTC commission and a degree in radiological health. Bentz is the first female officer from the Oregon Army National Guard to achieve the rank of general. This is the largest class to graduate from Oregon State University, which has seen record enrollments for several years. Despite the enormous class, OSU students will receive their actual diploma from OSU President Edward J. he Boardman City Council is seeking letters of interest from individuals willing to be considered for appointment to fill a vacancy on the City Council. The person appointed will fill Tony Navarro’s Council seat, who resigned in January due to moving outside the City. His term expires December 31, 2016. Letters of interest must be received no later than 5:00pm, Thursday July 11, 2013 to City Hall for consideration.
